• Converting a VMware player image from non-persistant to persistant

  I'm pondering setting up a virtual machine to generate app-v (since i got mdop from school) or thinapp application virtualisation packages. Ideally with either of these, i should work off a fresh system do the install, then copy out the packages produced. I'd like to not have to reinstall windows per package to get a fresh, unmodified stock copy of windows. I'm aware that its possible to make a hard disk image persistant in vmware player (one of my lecturers did it, but he's in another country). I'm wondering how would i convert a persistant image to a non persistant one? I'm currently running vmware player 4, with windows 7 guest and host.

  I'm not a Windows SuperUser, but neither just the regular user. I don't mind browsing the Registry, using Process Explorer, reading the Event logs, (un)installing new drivers and so on, but all this only makes me solve some problems. I tend though to run into problems where these tools aren't enough. Which tools should I learn about to improve my troubleshooting skills in Windows? Currently I'm using Windows Vista x64 (not moved to 7 yet), facing audio/video stuttering problems and I think this is a good place to improve my troubleshooting skills. I know this post is similar to this question, but my machine is only hanging occationally. • Separating two networks

  I have two routers, R1 and R2. R1 (a stock linksys router running dd-wrt) is connected to internet and is serving internet to a network of 5 devices/PCs running a DHCP server, with a network of 192.168.1.0/24. R1 also serves internet services to R2. R2 (a ubuntu server 12.04) gets internet from R1. R2 has 3 PCs attached to it, runs a DHCP server with a network of 172.22.22.0/24. My requirement is that the clients on both sides should not talk to each other at all – with the exception that R1 clients may access the R2 router through its IP of 192.168.1.x. At the moment, R2 clients are able to ping R1 clients, which is unacceptable, whereas R1 clients cannot ping R2 clients, which is OK. I believe iptables could be set up but I don't know how.

  Is there an alt-tab replacement for windows that works in the same manner as command-tab and command-tick on OS X? example of what I'd like to do: If I hit alt-tab, I'd like to switch between open applications, rather than all windows currently open. If I hit alt-tick, I'd like to switch between open windows of the same application. VistaSwitcher is almost there, in that it allows you to alt-tick switch between windows of the same app. So if I have 4 firefox windows open and one of them is my active window, I can alt-tick to switch between those 4 while ignoring any other open apps. However, VistaSwitcher's alt-tab functionality is similar to stock Windows alt-tab, where you cycle through all open windows, regardless of whether there are multiple instances of certain applications.

• How can I disable the automatic switch to "library" mode in Windows 7's Media Player 12?

  Whenever I plug any USB device into my computer while running Windows Media Player 12 in Windows 7, it will automatically swtich the player from the Now Playing mode to Library mode. This is intended to faciliate syncing between Media Player and MP3 players, but it happens for any USB device. I'd like this to not happen since it's infuriating to see this take place while I'm watching something on a separate screen in Media Player just from plugging in a USB key. This has nothing to do with Windows autorun, and nothing to do with versions of Windows pre-7. And no, switching to some other video player is not an option; I've tried them all, none are as good as stock Media Player in 7.

• Upgrade the Graphics Card for a Dell Dimension 3100

  Hi, I have a Dell Dimension 3100 Desktop with a 128MB Graphics Card Integrated into the Mother Board. I need to upgrade this 128MB to at least 256MB or 512MB if the system will support same. I am told by Dell that all I have is a PCIx1 slot and that they do not stock a Graphics Card for this. I was told to shop around at Amazon and ebay etc and I would find one there. I have shopped around for some time now and do not know exactly what I am looking for. There are several PCI Graphics Card out there but which one would be the correct one for a Dell Dimension 3100. • Two Routers - 1 Port Straight to First Router

  At my house we have two Wifi routers one's connected directly to the modem and the other is plugged in down stairs as a second network(Directly connected to the first router) Is there a way that I could make it so that I have the second router have its own network, but have one or two ports that would act as if they were directly connected to the first router? That way I can port forward to devices on the second router. Here are the information about the routers: Router 1 - Linksys WRT54G Running stock firmware Router 2 - Linksys E900 Running Tomato Firmware So to summarize what I'm asking is how would I have two networks from two routers but be able to connect directly to the first router through one of the ports on the second router. • Kernel panic error

  We have a dedicated server with software RAID1 and one of the disk failed recently. The disk was replaced but after rebuilding the array and rebooting the server freezes with a Kernel Panic message No filesystem could mount root, tried: reiserfs ext3 ext2 cramfs msdos vfat iso9660 romfs fuseblk xfs Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(9,1) The filesystem on both disks is ext4. It seems the kernel can't load ext4 support. Is there any way to add ext4 support or do I need to recompile a new kernel again ? Interesting point that before disk replacement all was fine. The kernel is a stock kernel bzImage-2.6.34.6-xxxx-grs-ipv6-64 from our provider OVH Kind regards,

• Gateway MX6440 CPU Upgrade

  I have received an a Gateway MX6440 laptop as a freebie, but I'm interested in upgrading its AMD Turion 64 ML-32 (socket 754) to something faster (and more cache). I know the range of processors that could work based on the family list in Wikipedia. However, this computer has the stock bios, and any updates I haven't applied from Gateway doesn't specify processor support. I'm looking to go to at least a 2.2 (ML-40). Has anybody upgraded the processor in this model or other in the series success or failure and do you happen to have any guides handy for working with the heat sink? Any Googling I have done keeps hitting RAM marketers. Update Computer died before I had a chance to try this out.

• Custom firmware for Asus WL-520g

  What custom firmware works with Asus WL-520g? (Note this is not 520gU, 520gC, etc.) I failed to flash it with Tomato (Tomato_1_28_ND.zip) - the admin UI does not accept the file, and when trying to tftp the file as adviced for 520gU all I get is this: Transfering file tomato-ND.trx to server in octet mode... Error occurred during the file transfer (Error code = 0): Error in SendPacket() call. I just saved the router form rather unsuccessful flash to DD-WRT (after few hours the router fell into coma), and I'd like to keep it as a backup should the new one die or whatever. (Unfortunately the stock firmware does not support WOL.)

• Mixing RAM brands

  Hey guys, I'm scheduled to install a server at a colo facility tomorrow, but I've hit a snag. ESXi doesn't like the fact that I have 12GB ram in my server (8gb on one side of CPU, 4gb on the other). I currently have 3xCrucial 4gb ECC DDR3 1333mhz sticks (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001TGT7EE/ref=oss_product) and I'm planning on stopping by Fry's on the way to the colo facility so I can pick up another stick so that ESXi will install. Problem is, Fry's doesn't stock Crucial RAM. They do have a stick that I think is identical to my crucial one: http://www.frys.com/product/5915524?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG Will this be dangerous to use in my server? The specs on the RAM are the same as far as I know (ecc registered, 1333mhz, ddr3, 4gb).

• Unable to connect to mysql through JDBC connector through Tomcat or externally

  I've installed a stock mysql 5.5 installation, and while I can connect to the mysql service via the mysql command, and the service seems to be running, I cannot connect to it through spring+tomcat or from an external jdbc connector. I'm using the following URL: jdbc:mysql://myserver.com:myport/mydb with proper username/password, but I receive the following message: server.com: Communications link failure The last packet sent successfully to the server was 0 milliseconds ago. the driver has not received any packets from the server. and tomcat throws: com.mysql.jdbc.exceptions.jdbc4.CommunicationsException: Communications link failure The last packet sent successfully to the server was 0 milliseconds ago.   Should USB controller drivers be updated? In Windows 7, many of the core system devices/buses/controllers still use stock Microsoft drivers dating back to 2006 -- things such as USB controllers and the PCI bus (and subsequent devices in the tree). Should these be getting updated? I would think that surely there would have been improvements/fixes/updates to some or any of these drivers by now, now over 7 years old. Does Windows know "best" in this case, updating these respective drivers when it's needed, or should the user be keeping an eye out for drivers in this "vein" of devices (meaning integrated/core/non-pluggable system devices that are built into the motherboard)?

• Windows 7 Line In Delay Issue

  Not sure if this question should be posted on a different stack exchange site, so if you find that it should not be posted here, please move it. Either way, if you know the solution, please advise. I'm running Windows 7 Pro 32-bit on my Dell Latitude 2100 netbook and I'm having an issue with the line in device/driver/functionality. The device & driver are stock: Driver Date: 7/13/2009 Driver Version: 6.1.7600.16385 I'm almost sure that the manufacturer of the sound card is RealTek. The problem is that there is a delay (when monitoring input) between the source and the speakers. My setup is bass guitar running through a 12' long instrument cable (1/4") with a 1/4" female to 1/8" male adapter into the line in port on the computer. Then the 15' long headphones/line out cable goes into a standard set of powered speakers. How do I get rid of this delay? Thanks for any help.

• How do I revert back to official Linksys firmware from dd-wrt on WRT56G2 v1?

  I've been having trouble with dd-wrt on my Linksys WRT56G2 v1 router and want to go back to the stock Linksys firmware for it. The router has only 2MB of flash memory, and so I'm running the 'micro' version of dd-wrt. My question is what is the best way to do that? I could use the http://router/Upgrade.asp dd-wrt "firmware upgrade" web interface to do it, in which case there's a dropdown menu choice for "After flashing, reset to": "don't reset" or "reset to default settings". Which should I pick? Some people say that I should use a program called tftp.exe instead. I can probably gain access to a Windows machine if this is necessary. Which of these is the way to proceed? I don't want to brick the router if at all possible! Note: I used the 'wrt54g' tag because I wasn't allowed to create a 'wrt54g2' tag due my low rep here.

• Windows 2008 additional disk going offline with reboots on Amazon EC2

  OK, so I took the stock Windows 2008 64-bit Amazon AMI and wanted to add a D: drive for page file space and crash dumps. I launched the instance with a second EBS volume attached as xvdf and went into Disk Management set it online, and added the page file and crash dump settings and all that works. But when I reboot, the box comes back up with that second drive as "Offline." How do I get that disk to automatically come online on reboot (or most notably, when I turn this into an AMI and launch more instances off it - I've tried that too and same deal with the D:).

• Anyway to backup nginx before recompiling

  I am looking to install the HttpGeoipModule for NGINX but learning I have to recompile the entire thing from source in order to do so. I have a new Media Temple DV 4.0 server and that comes with nginx v 1.3.0 stock and have never had to recompile from source before and a bit nervous to make changes without being able to revert to a previous state in the event something messes up (that and the fact it is affecting a live server so no idea what downtime is). My plan was to copy all the existing modules used (nginx -V to list them all and copy the modules already compiled). Then rebuild from source with the copied info above and including the ./configure --with-http_geoip_module reference. Is is possible to backup the existing nginx configuration in the event something goes wrong?

• Download a file via HTTP from a script in Windows

  I want a way to download a file via HTTP given its URL (similar to how wget works). I've seen the answers to this question, but I have two changes to the requirements: I'd like it to run on Windows 7 or later (though if it works on Windows XP, that's a bonus). I need to be able to do this on a stock machine with nothing but the script, which should be text that could be easily entered on a keyboard or copy/pasted. The shorter, the better. So, essentially, I'd like a .cmd (batch) script, VBScript, or Powershell script that can accomplish the download. It could use COM or invoke IE, but it needs to run without any input, and should behave well when invoked without a display (such as through a telnet session).

• Background process text appears in terminal vim

  First time poster, long time lurker, searched, couldn’t find etc, etc. I’m running vim in tmux, in iTerm2. I’m running a server with Grunt.js, which I have running in the background, out of my way. I start my grunt server in the background like this: grunt server & Grunt also watches a bunch of files, and runs some tasks when any of the watched files have been written to. The problem is, when I am in vim and I write a file, the output from grunt starts rendering in vim! I’ve tried running a ‘stock’ vim by starting with this: vim -u NONE …But the problem remains. This suggests to me that the problem is not with my .vimrc. Perhaps it’s an issue with iTerm2, I don’t know. Help.

  Our company wants to be able to have LCD TVs displaying TV with the ability to add an overlay, like a stock ticker at the bottom of the screen, where human resources can add content to be displayed. I have been trying to nail down the correct terminology for this and come across terms like Keying, Compositing, Live Broadcast Graphics Presentation, and Hardware Overlay but I don't know which of these terms is truly the correct way to refer to what I am trying to do. Black Magic offers a product that seems like it can do what I am looking for but their product seems like it is geared for a totally different purpose than what I would be using it for. Compix also seems to have a product that would do what I need but again it seems like killing a fly with a sledge hammer. How can I to take an HDMI TV broadcast and overlay arbitrary content in real time?

• ATI Radeon HD 5770 Cooling

  I have a Radeon HD 5770 manufactured by ATI. In the course of using compressed air to clean it the fan shattered. I put a case fan on the card to cool it, but it's not doing a great job; the temperature goes to nearly 100 sometimes. The card is not overclocked or anything, the PC itself is clean. I looked around for a third party cooling system but the only one I found was the Accelero L2 Pro. It's low on stock and I don't know how great it will be, some review say it may not fit on all 5770 cards. Does anyone know of another one that will work? Help is much appreciated.

• Making my computer an iPhone music dock?

  Are there any application which lets me play the music in my iPhone through the USB cable? It will be very convenient if I can just dock the phone (while the music is playing), and the music will come out from the computer's speakers instead of the speaker in the iPhone. Edit 1: Stock iPhone dock does have a line-out jack, thanks SidneySM for reminding me. Now the problem is, even though I have select Line In as the Sound Input in Mac OSX, there is no sound coming out from the speaker. How do I make the Speaker output the Line In audio?
