• How can I create multiple mini-sites with similar/duplicate content without hurting my search engine rank?

  Essential background: I run a small company that lets members of the public post handwritten letters to their local politician (UK-based). Every week a number of early stage bills (called Early Day Motions) are submitted for debate in the House of Commons, and supporters of the motion will contact their local Members of Parliament, asking them to sign the motion. The crux: I want to target these EDMs with customised mini-sites, so when people search "EDM xxx", they find my customised mini-site, specifically targeting that EDM (i.e., "Send a handwritten letter to your MP asking them to sign EDM xxx"). At the moment, all these mini-sites (and my homepage) have duplicate content with only the relevant EDM name, number, and background image changed. (For example, http://mailmymp.com and http://mailmymp.com/edm/teaching-life-saving-skills-at-school-edm-550.php). The question: Firstly, will this hurt my potential search engine ranking? And, if so, what's the best way to target these political campaigns in an efficient manner without hurting my SEO prospects?

• Stop myself from over-complicating applications

  Recently I worked on a fairly large project involving C# and MVVM. This application had around 160 projects in the solutions each seprarated into their own layers. As I have been working on this application for almost a year, building it from scratch as part of a team, I am now coming off that project and onto smaller more trivial projects. As I was beginning to develop a small in-house tool I found myself trying to mimic the larger applications structure and layering but in the end I just had a simple application with several DLLs which I know I wouldn't have done if I had not worked on that larger application before. I am just wondering if there are any techniques I can utilise to stop myself from turning a "code-behind" style trivial application into a full blown MVVM application? Or should I continue developing as I am and try to keep the unnecessary fluff out of the project?

  I am not a 3d developer but i want to lean 3ds max just for simple house building with 2-3 rooms. Actually i don't want to develop from scratch . What i really want to do is get the existing models of homes , rooms , hotels from the internet and add my name there or my photo there , just for fun . SO i want to know that how much time do u think it will take me to that sort of stuff. Its not my career but just hobby . • Empathy authentication error to XMPP server

  I recently installed Ubuntu 12.04 on a new machine and have been working on setting it up, but I've run into an interesting problem. I have a custom XMPP server for work (I don't control it, but we're using an in-house install). I can connect to it just fine via Pidgin, but due to some UI issues I'm having with Pidgin (and what appears to be better overall integration between Empathy and Ubuntu/Unity), I'd like to use Empathy instead. However, Empathy won't connect to my XMPP server, and I keep getting an authentication error and repeatedly prompted for my password. This happens even when importing the working account information from Pidgin (so I know things like the password are correct). Is there a way I can get Empathy working with my XMPP server?

• Internet keep dropping in Ubuntu 12.04

  I am having an issue with my Ubuntu, I keep getting "server not found" errors when I try to go online, I have tried pinging my DNS and Goggle, and it seems like no packets are dropped, but still my Internet is not working Also my other PCs in the house have working Internet connection. I am sure there is no firewall active here, also nothing on my router is blocking, and I checked cables. I have no issues in the same PC in Windows. It is only in Ubuntu. Any ideas?

• Is it possible to outsource design properly?

  I work in a company going through a downsizing process. It is assumed that a lot of "let go" developers jobs will eventually be outsourced. Some of those programmers had some design to do. Is it possible to outsource both design and creation/coding properly? I feel that by outsourcing design, we lose any in-house capability of really "owning" the code. It will be very difficult to maintain. Also we'll have a hard time ensuring a proper development. How can I address those issues?

• How should I synchronize configurations and data across computers?

  Imagine I have three Ubuntu computers home, laptop, beach-house. They all have the same version of Ubuntu, 10.04 installed, and are kept up to date from the repositories. I use f-spot, thunderbird, and google-chrome on all of the computers. Is there a way to keep the data and configuration in sync across them, without requiring constant connectivity for normal (non-synchronous) usage? For example, they should be usable without network connectivity, so something like NFS won't work. An ideal solution would not require manual action to start the syncing process.

• Does a person's day-to-day neatness (outside of programming) relate to quality and organization in programming?

  Before anyone jumps into any conclusion, I had a discussion with a friend (who's not a programmer at all) about the relationship between a person's neatness habit and the degree of neatness generally shown in works by the same person. This led me to think about this situation: Let's imagine you knew a programmer whose house was very messy. This person's lifestyle is messy by nature. On his desk there are books, papers, STUFF, piled everywhere including on the floor, mixed with dirty clothing, with no obvious organization at all. If you asked him to find a book he hasn't touched for at least a week from the cluster of chaos, he would take at least an hour to do so. How likely is it that he will produce very clean, consistent, and organized code that other people can use? Are there CS legends that are/were notoriously messy in day-to-day habits?

• access to site owner not working

  I made a website it works for everyone except for the site owner, who cannot access the site. He gets a server could not be found error. I went to his house and the issue occurs for all of his devices (PC, laptop, iPhone using WiFi) when I turn WiFi off the iPhone it works. So I thought it was a problem on his router so I reset is router to default factory settings but it still does not work, I have flushed his DNS cache and his browser cache. But nothing seems to help. He cannot even PING the server using the domain name. However when he uses the IP address he can see the site fine. I looked in cpanel for an blocked IP addresses but cannot see anything. What could be stopping just him from accessing the site via domainname and not the IP address? Site details are: PHP, osCommerce it is hosted by site5 on my reseller account.

  Can anyone recommend affiliate networks that focus on B2B development. We are about to launch a UK job search engine that allows job boards to list their jobs on the engine. We have decided to keep the advertising in house, with the goal being of keeping the costs down. I was wondering if anyone could offer any advice on potential advertising routes that we could take. For example B2B affiliate networks, adwords etc. We are in the position of launching an empty site and ideally we would like to be attracting recruitment agencies or businesses to signup to either a free or paid account. • Should I create an Enum mapping to my database table

  I have a database table containing a list of systems relevant to the tool I am building, mostly in-house applications, or third-party systems we receive data from. This table is added to infrequently, approx every 2 months. One of these systems is Windows itself, which is where we store our users' LANs, and I now need to explicitly reference the ID relating to Windows to query for user name, team etc. I know it would be bad practice to embed the ID itself into the code, so my question is what would be the best way to avoid this? I'm assuming my options are: create a global constant representing this ID create a global enum containing all systems now create a global enum and add systems to it as & when they are required in the code retrieve the ID from the database based on system name I appreciate this may seem a trivial question, but I am going to have many situations like this during the course of this build, and although we are in complete control of the database I would like to conform to best practice as far as possible.   This is a viewpoint I've started to realize recently about some companies that I have worked for. They had their own software product that they developed in-house but most of the focus was on building an in-person sales team to push their product to businesses throughout the country. I figure that companies that are exclusively "online", meaning that their revenue source comes from online transactions where there is no "face" of the company to the customer would have a different work culture. Just curious if anyone has worked for both types of companies and notices a difference. I myself am hoping to get more into contract programming and figure that companies that don't have to employ a sales-force and things like that would be more focused on technology and maybe even willing to be flexible on partial telecommute, etc

Rather than having load of categories like, for example, Builder, Electrician, Carpenter etc, we would like to have one word more general categories. So for example we have House, Computer, Education, Art etc. So a builder would be in category Home and a few others. Will this style negatively effect our SEO and ranking? And if so, should we abandon and go back to traditional categories and sub-categories?

  I'm just putting together an internal data system for a client, which is ASP.NET VB, backed by an SQL database, on an in-house IIS7.5 dedicated server. I want to store certain global settings, such as the age limit for news articles, admin contacts etc, in a file NOT within the database (i.e. to avoid unnecessary database query's) Where would the best place to store this be? global.asax? app.config? or a custom XML file? how would i import these at runtime? (probably to session variables) ETA: Also - the settings must be editable from within the site, i.e. an admin section i'm yet to build

• Big delay to open web pages on Ubuntu 11.10; also slow torrent client speed

  The keywords for my issue are too common among other issues, so, I couldn't find anything that could answer me: why will it take around 30+ seconds for any of my browsers to open a page? happens even with google.com... with both Firefox and Chromium. This does not happen while I use Windows, from exactly the same point at my house (I've got enough wi-fi signal here for sure). Also, the standard torrent client won't hit the max download speed... I can hit 1 Mb/s with utorrent on Windows, and can't go over 300 kbps here. I tried changing the program settings, no results. Please help me. I REALLY don't wanna go back to Windows. Thanks in advance, I admire this community, and I'm sorry that I couldn't find something that could help me. I already solved a lot of issues without asking, but couldn't do it this time.
