  • Reserve RAM in C

    Hi I need ideas on how to write a C program that reserve a specified amount of MB RAM until a key [ex. the any key] is pressed on a Linux 2.6 32 bit system. * /.eat_ram.out 200 # If free -m is execute at this time, it should report 200 MB more in the used section, than before running the program. [Any key is pressed] # Now all the reserved RAM should be released and the program exits. * It is the core functionality of the program [reserving the RAM] i do not know how to do, getting arguments from the commandline, printing [Any key is pressed] and so on is not a problem from me. Any ideas on how to do this?

  • Data Structures

    There is a large stream of numbers coming in such as 5 6 7 2 3 1 2 3 .. What kind of data structure is suitable for this problem given the constraints that elements must be inserted in descending order and duplicates should be eliminated. I am not looking for any code just ideas? I was thinking of a Self-Balancing BST where we could add the condition that all nodes < current node on left and all nodes current node on right, this takes care of the duplicates .. but i don't think they are necessarily inserted in descending order. Any ideas what might be a better choice .. ofcourse it needs to be efficient time and space wise.

  • changing selenium domain/subdomain within cucumber scenarios

    So, I have a Rails webapp that utilizes subdomains for separating the admin functionality from the public functionality using subdomain-fu. So there is functionality(that I want to test!) contained within two urls(eg admin.example.com and www.example.com). I want some scenarios to run against the admin domain, and some against the www domain. My problem is that I cant figure out how to change the domain that selenium uses at any time after startup. I can put something like this in my env.rb: Webrat.configure do |config| config.mode = :selenium config.application_address = "admin.example.com" end And it will work, but only for the scenarios that need the admin domain. If I try something like: host! "www.example.com" inside my steps, well it seems to just be ignored by selenium, which goes on using "admin.example.com" Any ideas? Or if its not possible, any ideas for a workaround?

  • Adaboost algorithm and its usage in face detection

    I am trying to understand Adaboost algorithm but i have some troubles. After reading about Adaboost i realized that it is a classification algorithm(somehow like neural network). But i could not know how the weak classifiers are chosen (i think they are haar-like features for face detection) and how finally the H result which is the final strong classifier can be used. I mean if i found the alpha values and compute the H ,how am i going to benefit from it as a value (one or zero) for new images. Please is there an example describes it in a perfect way? i found the plus and minus example that is found in most adaboost tutorials but i did not know how exactly hi is chosen and how to adopt the same concept on face detection. I read many papers and i had many ideas but until now my ideas are not well arranged. Thanks....

  • C Programming - Convert an integer to binary

    Hi guys - i was hopefully after some tips opposed to solutions as this is homework and i want to solve it myself I am firstly very new to C. In fact i have never done any before, though i have previous java experience from modules at university. I am trying to write a programme that converts a single integer in to binary. I am only allowed to use bitwise operations and no library functions Can anyone possibly suggest some ideas about how i would go about doing this. Obviously i dont want code or anything, just some ideas as to what avenues to explore as currenty i am a little confused and have no plan of attack.   • Drupal Views Duplicate values being returned when using a relationship

    I am having a problem with views. I have a view and am passing it a taxonomy term by name to it. I then have a relationship to a related node. For my output fields I am returning the related Title and related Body. I however have duplicates in my results. I have turned distinct to yes but believe this is working on the nodes being return and not the related node. Any ideas how I can remove the duplicates? Update Below is the query being run when I only get the title SELECT DISTINCT(node.nid) AS nid, node_node_data_field_wine_company.title AS node_node_data_field_wine_company_title, node_node_data_field_wine_company.nid AS node_node_data_field_wine_company_nid FROM node node LEFT JOIN content_type_wine node_data_field_wine_company ON node.vid = node_data_field_wine_company.vid INNER JOIN node node_node_data_field_wine_company ON node_data_field_wine_company.field_wine_company_nid = node_node_data_field_wine_company.nid LEFT JOIN term_node term_node ON node.vid = term_node.vid INNER JOIN term_data term_data ON term_node.tid = term_data.tid WHERE term_data.name = 'test' GROUP BY nid It looks like I should be grouping by node_node_data_field_wine_company_nid or selecting distinct values from there. Any ideas?

    Hello. I am trying to submit a form with method GET and action "index.php?id=3". The problem is that it jumps to the url specified but it cuts off "?id=3" part. I need that so I can identify an user. Any ideas on how I could submit the whole url ? I don't want to change this method, by design is much complex than I told you here. It's a simple version.   • Modeling distribution of performance measurements

    How would you mathematically model the distribution of repeated real life performance measurements - "Real life" meaning you are not just looping over the code in question, but it is just a short snippet within a large application running in a typical user scenario? My experience shows that you usually have a peak around the average execution time that can be modeled adequately with a Gaussian distribution. In addition, there's a "long tail" containing outliers - often with a multiple of the average time. (The behavior is understandable considering the factors contributing to first execution penalty). My goal is to model aggregate values that reasonably reflect this, and can be calculated from aggregate values (like for the Gaussian, calculate mu and sigma from N, sum of values and sum of squares). In other terms, number of repetitions is unlimited, but memory and calculation requirements should be minimized. A normal Gaussian distribution can't model the long tail appropriately and will have the average biased strongly even by a very small percentage of outliers. I am looking for ideas, especially if this has been attempted/analysed before. I've checked various distributions models, and I think I could work out something, but my statistics is rusty and I might end up with an overblown solution. Oh, a complete shrink-wrapped solution would be fine, too ;) Other aspects / ideas: Sometimes you get "two humps" distributions, which would be acceptable in my scenario with a single mu/sigma covering both, but ideally would be identified separately. Extrapolating this, another approach would be a "floating probability density calculation" that uses only a limited buffer and adjusts automatically to the range (due to the long tail, bins may not be spaced evenly) - haven't found anything, but with some assumptions about the distribution it should be possible in principle. Why (since it was asked) - For a complex process we need to make guarantees such as "only 0.1% of runs exceed a limit of 3 seconds, and the average processing time is 2.8 seconds". The performance of an isolated piece of code can be very different from a normal run-time environment involving varying levels of disk and network access, background services, scheduled events that occur within a day, etc. This can be solved trivially by accumulating all data. However, to accumulate this data in production, the data produced needs to be limited. For analysis of isolated pieces of code, a gaussian deviation plus first run penalty is ok. That doesn't work anymore for the distributions found above. [edit] I've already got very good answers (and finally - maybe - some time to work on this). I'm starting a bounty to look for more input / ideas.

  • Displaying Django Messages Framework Messages

    I have been using the Django Messaging Framework to display messages to a user in the template. I am outputting them to the template like this: <ul> {% for message in messages %} <li{% if message.tags %} class="{{ message.tags }}"{% endif %}>{{ message }}</li> {% endfor %} </ul> This outputs all the messages, errors, warning, success etc. I was just wondering if anyone had any ideas how to display only the error messages something like: <ul> {% for message in messages.errors %} <li>{{ message }}</li> {% endfor %} </ul> Any ideas?     I am trying to get the on screen location of an NSStatusItem so that I can perform a click on that area via code like below.   • Distributing points over a surface within boundries

    I'm interested in a way (algorithm) of distributing a predefined number of points over a 4 sided surface like a square. The main issue is that each point has got to have a minimum and maximum proximity to each other (random between two predefined values). Basically the distance of any two points should not be closer than let's say 2, and a further than 3. My code will be implemented in ruby (the points are locations, the surface is a map), but any ideas or snippets are definitely welcomed as all my ideas include a fair amount of brute force.

  • Unable to remove master -> child subform links in microsoft access 2003

    Hi, I am having an issue removing the master - child link fields in an access subreport data form. I have tried every avenue to remove them, using the properties window of the subreport as well as the link wizard. I have also deleted the subreport from the database and then gone as far as re-importing the existing objects into a new access instance. As soon as I re-added the subform back in and name it the same name the link fields show back up. Something is apparently corrupt, but I have run out of ideas at this point on how to clear them. Any Ideas would be appreciated. Thanks Doug

  • Keeping files or database records? Java and Python

    My website will use a Neural Network to predict thing based on user data. The user can select the data to be used in training the network and then use their trained network to predict things. I am using a framework to create, train and query the networks. This uses Java. The framework has persistence for saving a network to an XML file. What is the best way to store these files? I can see several potential ideas, but I need help on choosing which is best: Save each network to a separate XML file with a name that is stored in the database. Load this each time. Save all the networks to the same XML file with each network having a different name that is stored in the database. Somehow pass what would normally be written to an XML file to the Django site for writing to the database. This would need to be returned to the Java code when a prediction needs to be made. I am able to do 1 or 2, but I think their performance will be quite limited and I am on shared hosting at the moment, so I don't know how pleased they would be with thousands of files. Also, after adding a few thousand records to one XML file, I was noticing a massive performance hit on saving to it. If I were able to implement version 3 somehow I think it would be best. No issues with separate processes accessing the database and I think performance would be better. Not to mention having no files lying around. However, the stuff in the neural network framework I am using (Encog) for saving to a file needs access to a Java file object, not a string that could be saved to a database. Unless there is some Java magic I can do here (I know very little Java), the only way I can see of doing this would be with a temporary files but I don't know if this is the correct way to do it. I would appreciate any ideas on the best way to implement any of the above 3 ideas or any alternatives. Thanks!
