  • Revisions: algorithm and data structure

    Hi, I need ideas for structuring and processing data with revisions. For example, I have a database of objects (e.g. cars). Each object has a number of properties, which can be arbitrary, so there's no a set schema to describe these objects. These objects are probably saved as key-value pairs. Now I need to change property of an object. I don't want to completely rewrite it - I want to be able to go back and see history of changes to these properties, that's why I want to add new property and keep the old one (so I guess a timestamp would do the job of telling which property is the latest). At the same time I want to be able to get info about any object in a snap, with only latest versions of each of the properties. Any ideas what would be the best approach? At least please point me in the right direction. Thanks!

  • Most efficient way for a lookup/search in a huge list (python)

    Hey guys, -- I just parsed a big file and I created a list containing 42.000 strings/words. I want to query [against this list] to check if a given word/string belongs to it. So my question is: What is the most efficient way for such a lookup? A first approach is to sort the list [list.sort()] and then just use the if word in list: print 'word' -- which is really trivial and I am sure there is a better way to do it. My goal is to apply a fast lookup that finds whether a given string is in this list or not. If you have any ideas of another data structure, they are welcome. Yet, I want to avoid for now more sophisticated data-structures like Tries etc. I am interested in hearing ideas (or tricks) about fast lookups or any other python library methods that might do the search faster than the simple 'in'.   • Database Table design for Weekdays and Values

    Guys, I would love to here your ideas on this. I am creating a table which will store weekly shift hours for employees. for example: Jon works 9:00am tp 9:00pm Monday , 10:00 AM to 5:00PM on Tuseday etc.... How should i go on designing this table. I thought of 2 options. (1) For every record I can have two lines for AM and PM and have columns for Monday to Sunday ID | ParentID | Type | Monday | Tuseday ......Sunday 1 | 1 | AM | 9:00 | 9:00 12:00 2 | 1 | PM | 9:00 | 5:00 02:00 3 | 2 | AM | 10:00 | 4 | 2 | PM | 10:00 | (2) I can save Preference in XML format in one column ID | Info 1 | |Hours|Monday|9:00 AM - 9:00PM|Monday|Tuseday........|Hours Any better ideas ?   • How to implement image map type interface for a game board in Java 6

    My group project at school is to implement a style of monopoly in which students can buy courses and land on various squares and move around the board. This is not a regular square board so we were wondering if anyone had any ideas on how we would implement an image map or something like it to create many clickable regions not in a perfect square. I have attached the image of the game board. Just a way to start is needed, not lots of code or anything as we all know java pretty well. If anyone has any ideas that would be great.     Two excellent results of SOLID development ideology are - Legibility - Extensibility over the life of a project (http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solid_(object-oriented_design) Although SOLID is a set of language-agnostic design ideas, some languages inherently support these ideas better than others. Out-of-the-box or after various customizations, in your opinion which language is best-suited to be both easily readable and easy to extend functionality in? Some definitions to pre-empt biases and flamewars: Legibility: amount of thinking done to understand the code proportional to the amount of code: (amount_think-energy / amount_code) is fairly constant and as low as possible in the optimal case. Extensibility: Addition of X amount of functionality requires a change in code or code additions in proportion to X (amount_added_functionality / amount_added_code) is fairly constant and as high as possible in the optimal case. Supporting information and tutorials encouraged. Code snippets welcome.

    hello. I am developing functional domain specific embedded language within C++ to translate formulas into working code as concisely and accurately as possible. Right now my language looks something like this: // implies two nested loops j=0:N, i=0,j (range(i) < j < N)[T(i,j) = (T(i,j) - T(j,i))/e(i+j)]; // implies summation over above expression sum(range(i) < j < N))[(T(i,j) - T(j,i))/e(i+j)]; I am looking for possible syntax improvements/extensions or just different ideas about expressing mathematical formulas as clearly and precisely as possible. Can you give me some syntax examples relating to my question which can be accomplished in your language of choice which consider useful. In particular, if you have some ideas about how to translate the above code segments, I would be happy to hear them Thank you

  • Writing secure java code with RMI

    Hi Everyone, This may seem like a very broad question, but any help is appreciated. I have a client/server solution written in java which uses the Cajo project (which uses RMI). I just want to try and make my solution as secure as possible, given the sensitive data that will be transferred between server and client. So far, my ideas are to make all my classes "final" as well as throw a "non-serializable" exception for all my classes in the server (except for the object bound in the RMI registry, and any objects that actually do need to be transferred of course). Can anyone think of any other ideas? I know that someone could write a malicious client - this isn't hard to do as you can find out the remote object's API using reflection. However is there anything I can do to protect a malicious client access classes/objects within the server that they are not supposed to access? Many Thanks

    I would like some idea about a good workflow for Website Design, with a high degree of "offshoring" (Elance, Odesk etc.). I would to do as much as possible "pre production", with client input, ideas etc. stored in IA diagrams, wireframe mockups etc. in something like a Wiki. Also a like the idea about having different people come up with different design proposals. Wouldlike to have some ideas of costs of different phases and tasks ($, %, hours). With Design I mean roughly the aspects of a site that can be done with client-side tools, especially XHTML and CSS. What other tools should I use than IA diagrams.

  • Python how to handle # in a dictionary

    I've got some json from last.fm's api which I've serialised into a dictionary using simplejson. A quick example of the basic structure is below. { "artist": "similar": { "artist": { "name": "Blah", "image": {"#text":"URLHERE","size": "small"} "image": {"#text":"URLHERE","size": "medium"} "image": {"#text":"URLHERE","size": "large"} } } } Any ideas how I can access the image urls of various different sizes. My attempts at accessing the #text variable don't seem to work because python doesn't appear to like #'s in the names. And any ideas how I can easily get the url for the depending on the size?   • Newline not showing correctly in textbox

    I am loading a string from my database which among other things contains line breaks (\r\n). However, this isn't being rendered as a new line but instead as \r\n. If I type it directly in instead of loading it from a string, it works just fine but I need to be able to load it from a string. Any ideas? Edit: Upon closer inspection, it looks like the string is being returned as: Changed test7\\r\\nChanged test8\\r\\nChanged test9Changed test7 From the database. I tried running a .Replace(@"\\", @"\") on it but this had no effect at all. Any ideas?

  • How to evaluate "enterprise" platforms?

    Hi all, I'm tasked with evaluating an "enterprise" platform for the next-gen version of a product. We're currently considering two "types" of platforms - RAD (workflow engine, integrated UI, small cores of "technology plugins" to the workflows, automatic persisting of state...) like SalesForce.com / Service-Now.com and "cloud based" (EC2 / AppEngine...). While I have a few ideas on where to start, I'd like your opinions - how would you evaluate platforms for an enterprise suite of products? What factors would you consider? How would you eliminate weak options quickly enough to be able to concentrate on the few strong ones? Also interesting is how would you compare enterprise RAD (proven technology, quick to develop - but tends to look "the same as the competition") to cloud-based technology (lots of "buzz", not that many competitors - easy to justify to management, but probably lacking (?) enterprise tools and experience). As said before - I have a few ideas, but would like to see some answers before I post mine so I wouldn't drive the discussion to a specific place. RB.

  • Finding cities close to one another using longitude and latitude

    Each user in my db is associated to a city (with it's longitude and latitude) How would I go about finding out which cities are close to one another? i.e. in England, Cambridge is fairly close to London. So If I have a user who lives in Cambridge. Users close to them would be users living in close surrounding cities, such as London, Hertford etc. Any ideas how I could go about this? And also, how would I define what is close? i.e. in the UK close would be much closer than if it were in the US as the US is far more spread out. Ideas and suggestions. Also, do you know any services that provide this sort of functionality? Thanks

  • Why does my app not work on Android 2.3?

    Hi all, just a quick question about Android 2.3. I've been receiving reports from people using my app that it crashes on startup in Android 2.3. It works absolutely fine on the other SDK versions as far as I can tell. Since I don't have a phone running Android 2.3 I can't test out where the error is, which makes it very frustrating to deal with! Has anyone got any ideas what might have changed in Android 2.3 to mean the app crashes? Has anyone else had a similar problem? The following are ideas I've had for what might be causing it... Splash screen - on my main activity I trigger this in onCreate and it displays for 3 secs before finishing I'm using the GPS capability of Android, has this vastly changed in 2.3 to mean that something's going wrong? There's been a fundamental change in application startup in 2.3 that I'm not aware of. Any feedback would be much appreciated!

  • HTML5 Canvas compositing question (source-in)

    I am trying to recreate a page flipping type animation in HTML5 using canvas. The animation is based on ideas from here: hxxp://oreilly.com/javascript/archive/flashhacks.html but thats not really important. The problem I am having is that using the 'source-in' composite operation is not giving me the results I expect and would like clarification as to why. Here is the example: (i think it can only be viewed in chrome, not working in FF 3.6) http://acpound.fylez.com/test/example.html The black rectangle is supposed to act as a 'mask' for the page being turned over. All I want to see is the turning page in the areas where it overlaps the mask. The problem is the entire black rectangle is drawn, not just the area where they overlap. The source is all on the page. I know HTML5 isn't really being used yet, I'm just experimenting for my personal site and curiosity. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

  • Fastest Way to generate 1,000,000+ random numbers in python

    I am currently writing an app in python that needs to generate large amount of random numbers, FAST. Currently I have a scheme going that uses numpy to generate all of the numbers in a giant batch (about ~500,000 at a time). While this seems to be faster than python's implementation. I still need it to go faster. Any ideas? I'm open to writing it in C and embedding it in the program or doing w/e it takes. Constraints on the random numbers: A Set of numbers 7 numbers that can all have different bounds: eg: [0-X1, 0-X2, 0-X3, 0-X4, 0-X5, 0-X6, 0-X7] Currently I am generating a list of 7 numbers with random values from [0-1) then multiplying by [X1..X7] A Set of 13 numbers that all add up to 1 Currently just generating 13 numbers then dividing by their sum Any ideas? Would pre calculating these numbers and storing them in a file make this faster? Thanks!

  • Can sIFR js files be combined into 1 js file?

    In the new sifr 3, the author has implemented the ability to combine the css files into 1 file. There are 4 .js files total and I was wondering if there were any ideas how to combine these files for a faster loading time on the client side and also I was wondering if there was any way to just include the sIFR css styles in an already existing css file. These modifications would greatly decrease the load/waiting time on the end user and I was wondering if there was any thought for that on upcoming builds or if there were any ideas on how to accomplish this idea.

    Hi all, I am thinking to create an e-commerce site for a clothing business. I have bit of a development knowledge in c# .net, html, css and other web technologies. Could you please advise on these questions ? Is it a good idea to create a site from the scratch ? I have a running example of such a site, however it is bit old. So can I start with old site and change the html and code behind ? Some people argue that it is better to use MVC for ecommerce site. Any good reasons ? BTW I don't know MVC, but can learn if I have to use it. It is decided to use .NET but if you have any ideas of better technologies, please let me know.
