• iOS 5 fixed positioning and virtual keyboard

  I have a mobile website which has a div pinned to the bottom of the screen via position:fixed. All works fine in iOS 5 (I'm testing on an iPod Touch) until I'm on a page with a form. When I tap into an input field and the virtual keyboard appears, suddenly the fixed position of my div is lost. The div now scrolls with the page as long as the keyboard is visible. Once I click Done to close the keyboard, the div reverts to its position at the bottom of the screen and obeys the position:fixed rule. Has anyone else experienced this sort of behavior? Is this expected? Thanks.

• NTFS-compressing Virtual PC disks (on host and/or guest)

  I'm hoping someone here can answer these definitively: Does putting a VHD file in an NTFS-compressed folder on the host improve performance of the virtual machine, diminish performance, or neither? What about using NTFS compression within the guest? Does using compresssion on either the host or the guest lead to any problems like read or write errors? If I were to put a VHD in a compressed folder on the host, would I benefit from compacting it? I've seen references to using NTFS compression on quite a few VPC "tips and tricks" blog posts, and it seems like half of them say to never do it and the other half say that not only does it save disk space but it actually can improve performance if you have a fast CPU and your primary performance bottleneck is the disk.

• ASP.NET MVC thinks my virtual directory is a controller

  I have a virtual directory under my MVC website in IIS called "Files". This directory is at the same level as my Views directory. When I link to a file from my MVC app to a file under my Files directory, I get the following error: The controller for path '/Files/Images/1c7f7eb8-5d66-4bca-a73a-4ba6340a7805.JPG' was not found or does not implement IController. It thinks that my Files VD is a controller. How do I access my files like a normal VD without MVC interfering? Thanks.

• Unwanted virtual keyboard in Blackberry app

  I have developed a Blackberry app for the 4.5 os series. It works fine on all device except on the storm 1 (storm2 untested). The problem (on the storm) is that the main screen of my application (and all other screens in fact) is shown with the virtual keybord. But there is no text field displayed on the screen that would justify the VK to show up. I have bitmap fields and button fields only on that screen. The use of a single program for all devices (4.5 and up) is seriously preferred. What is causing the VK to show up and what can I do to prevent it (in JDE 4.5)?

• Application loses authentication when performing redirect to a virtual directory

  I have the following setup: http://www.example.com/dir1/ and http://www.example.com/dir2/ Each virtual directory is configured on IIS6.0 as an application with own AppPool. When redirecting authenticated user from dir1 to dir2 using response.redirect I lose authentication information for the user and the user is being redirected to the login page. This issue was not coming up with each app (dir1 and dir2) were configured under subdomain, ex: http://dir1.example.com and http://dir2.example.com. I have resolved the issue by adding a machine key to the machine.config file. Can someone explain to me why it's not working on a http://www.example.com/dir1 configuration?

  Hi All, I have downloaded cruisecontrol.net setup and have installed it in "C:\Program Files\CruiseControl.NET". It contains a folder called "webdashboard" which has aspx page and some other stuff as well. I want to configure this in my IIS so that I can access it , I tried but it doesn't work , every time I get error that page you requested is not found. I created web site, created virtual directory but none is working. I have not put anything in inetpub/wwwroot. Can anyone please guide me how can I configure this to work.

• Virtual PC 2007 as programming environment

  I'd like to create a VM in Virtual PC 2007 for use as a development environment/sandbox for an existing ASP.NET application in Visual Studio 2005/SQL Server 2005 (and VSS for source control). I'm thinking that I need to create a 'base' copy of the environment (with the os, Visual Studio, and Sql Server), and then copy that to a 'work' version that I do actual development in. I would be sharing this VM with one or two other developers who would be working on different parts of the app. Is this a good idea? What is the best way to get my app/databases in and out of the VM and the changes I make into VSS? Is it just a copy from the host location to the VM share and back again? How do I keep everything synchronized? Thanks!

• How to Create a Virtual Windows Drive

  Hello, I'm trying to create a Windows Virtual Drive ( like c:\ ) to map a remote storage. The main purpose is to do it in a clear way to the user. Therefore the user wouldn't know that he is writing/reading from another site. I was searching for available products, and i find that FUSE is not an option in Windows and WebDAV maps directly the drive, and i would like to build a middle layer between windows and remote storage to implement some kind of services. Another alternatives exists, such as Dokan, that is very expensive, and System.IO.IsolatedStorage Namespace, that doesn't seem to explicity create a new Windows Drive. Probably pismo ( http://www.pismotechnic.com/ ) is the thing that mostly matches my requirements but I would know if there is another alternative, including some Windows ( C++ or .NET ) native API to do that. • Stir Trek: Iron Man Edition Recap and Photos

  If you’ve noticed my blogging activity has reduced in frequency and technical content lately it’s primarily due to all of the conferences I’ve been attending, speaking at, or planning in the past few months.  This past Friday myself and six other dedicated individuals put on Stir Trek: Iron Man Edition as the culmination of a few months of hard work.  For those unfamiliar, Stir Trek is a web developer conference that was founded last year as an event to showcase content from Microsoft’s MIX conference and end the day with a private showing of the then just-released Star Trek movie.  This year’s conference expanded from 2 to 4 content tracks and upped the number of tickets from 350 to 600.  Even more amazing was the fact that we had 592 people show up day of the event for the lowest drop-off percentage of any conference I’ve been to before.   Nerd Dinner and Swag Bags     The night before Stir Trek: Iron Man Edition we hosted a nerd dinner at the Polaris Shopping mall food court with about 30 in attendance.  Nerd dinners are a great time to meet others passionate about technology and socialize before the whirlwind of the conference hits.  After the nerd dinner 20+ volunteers headed to the conference location and helped us stuff swag bags.  This in and of itself was a monumental task of putting together 600 swag bags with numerous leaflets, sponsor items, and t-shirts.  A big thanks goes out to all who assisted us that night so that we could finish in just under 2 hours instead of taking all night.  My sleep schedule also thanks you. Morning of Stir Trek     After getting a decent amount of sleep I arrived at Marcus Crosswoods theater at 6am to begin setting up for the day.  Myself and Jody Morgan were in charge of registration so we got tables set up, laid out swag bags, and organized our volunteer crew to assist with checking-in attendees.  Despite having 600+ people registration went fairly smoothly and got the day off to a great start.  I especially appreciated the 3+ cups of coffee from Crimson Cup, a local coffee shop.  For any of you that know me you’ll know that I rarely drink coffee except a few times a year when I really need the energy, so that says a lot about how good their coffee is.   Conference Starts     Once registration was completed the day kicked off with Molly Holzschlag keynoting.  Unfortunately Molly suffered from an ear infection and wasn’t able to fly so she had a virtual keynote and a session later in the day.  I was working behind the scenes on various tasks so I was only able to drop in very briefly on the keynote and rest of the morning sessions.  Throughout the day I tried to grab at least 1 or 2 pics of each presenter.  See my album below for the full set of pics.      For lunch we ordered around 150 pizzas from Mellow Mushroom, a local pizza place (notice the theme of supporting local businesses.)  Early on we were concerned about Mellow Mushroom being able to supply that many pizzas and get them delivered (still hot) to the theater, but they did an excellent job day of the event.  I wish I had gotten some pictures of the old school VW van they delivered the pizza in, but I was just a bit busy running around trying to get theaters ready for lunch.  We had attendees from last year who specifically requested that we have Mellow Mushroom supply lunch this year and I’m glad everything worked out being able to use them again.     During the afternoon I was able to attend a few sessions and hear some great content from various speakers.  It was also nice to just sit down and get off my feet for a bit.  After the last sessions the day concluded with a raffle.  There were a few logistical and technical issues that hampered our ability to smoothly conduct the raffle.  To those of you that agree the raffle wasn’t the smoothest experience I would like to say that the Stir Trek planning committee has already begun meeting to discuss ways of improving the conference for next year.  We are also accepting feedback (both positive and negative) at the following link: click here.  If you don’t wish to use the Joind In site you can also email me directly and I’ll be sure to pass along the feedback.   Iron Man 2 Movie     Last but not least, what Stir Trek event would be complete without the feature movie.  This year’s movie was Iron Man 2.  The theater had some really cool props and promotions (see pic below) for the movie.  I really enjoyed Iron Man 2, but I would recommend brushing up on the Iron Man comics and Marvel’s plans for future movies to understand some of the plot elements that come up.  Also make sure you stay through to the end of the movie credits to see a sneak peak of something special, that’s all I’ll say. • Single Sign On for Web Application and Application in Virtual Directory

  To enable single sign-on for a web application and a web application in a virtual directory, I set the machinekey in both apps to the same: <machineKey validationKey="xxx" decryptionKey="yy" validation="SHA1" /> The single sign on works just fine, but existing users can't sign in any more; their passwords are rejected. The machinekey used to be this in the parent application: <machineKey validationKey="xxx,IsolateApps" decryptionKey="yy,IsolateApps" validation="SHA1" /> I tried other ways to make single sign on work, but it just won't as long as the keys contain "IsolateApps". What am I missing? I should add that the in the membership provider, passwordFormat is set to "Encrypted". So I assume the password was encrypted using the key that contained "IsolateApps" and now when it tries to validate the password it's using the key without the "IsolateApps". Still not sure how to solve that problem. Is there maybe a way that I can set the encryption keys for the password separately from the one that is used for the authentication cookie?

• IIS 6 with wildcard mapping and UNC virtual directory problem

  Hi. On our production servers (win 2003 with IIS6 and load balanced with an F5 BIGIP), we have a problem when introducing wildcardmapping on IIS6. We use .net Framework 3.5 SP1. The issue manifests itself as by the server only sometimes serving the images stored on a virtual directory pointing to a UNC path. Sometimes the images are displayed, and sometimes not. Removing the wildcard mapping solved this problem. I will need wildcard mapping on the server for future features, so any help/pointers to if this is a known problem will be very helpful. In advance, thanks for any help. Edit: The exception it fails with is the following: Message: Failed to start monitoring changes to '\ourFileServer\folder1\thumbnails' because the network BIOS command limit has been reached.   I understood why a base class pointer is made to point to a derived class object. But, I fail to understand why we need to assign to it, a base class object, when it is a base class object by itself. The new audit_log_policy variable uses the following valid, descriptively named values to enable, disable audit stream logging and to filter the audit events that are logged to the audit stream: "ALL" - enable audit stream and log all events "LOGINS" - enable audit stream and log only login events "QUERIES" - enable audit stream and log only querie events "NONE" - disable audit stream 4. Manage audit log files using basic MySQL log rotation features. A new global variable, audit_log_rotate_on_size, allows you to automate the rotation and archival of audit stream log files based on size with archived log files renamed and appended with datetime stamp when a new file is opened for logging. 5. Integrate the MySQL audit stream with MySQL, Oracle tools and other third-party solutions. The MySQL audit stream is written as XML, using UFT-8 and can be easily formatted for viewing using a standard XML parser. This enables you to leverage tools from MySQL and others to view the contents. The audit stream was also developed to meet the Oracle database audit stream specification so combined Oracle/MySQL shops can import and manage MySQL audit images using the same Oracle tools they use for their Oracle databases. • VMWare-Mount not recognizing virtual disks

  I have two disks as .vmdk files, and four as .vdi files. I can boot virtual machines on them with Sun xMV VirtualBox, and they work just fine. However, I want to mount them on my local computer so I can read some files off of them without starting a virtual machine. I downloaded the vmware-mount utility, but I get this error, even when mounting .vmdk files, which should be VMWare images... Unable to mount the virtual disk. The disk may be in use by a virtual machine, may not have enough volumes or mounted under another drive letter. If not, verify that the file is a valid virtual disk file. Thinking it's a problem with the utility, I downloaded the SDK and made my own simple program in C to try to mount a disk. It just initializes the API, connects to it, then attempts to open the disk. I get this error, once again claiming it is not a virtual disk: **LOG: DISKLIB-DSCPTR: descriptor above max size: I64u **LOG: DISKLIB-LINK : "f:\programming\VMs\windowstrash.vdi" : failed to open (The file specified is not a virtual disk). **LOG: DISKLIB-CHAIN : "f:\programming\VMs\windowstrash.vdi" : failed to open (The file specified is not a virtual disk). **LOG: DISKLIB-LIB : Failed to open 'f:\programming\VMs\windowstrash.vdi' with flags 0x1e (The file specified is not a virtual disk). ** FAILURE ** : The file specified is not a virtual disk The files are clearly virtual disks, though, since I can actually mount and use them with a virtual machine. I tried detaching them from any VMs and trying again, but I got the same results. Any ideas? Maybe the "descriptor above max size" is a hint? Some more info: the .vmdk disks were created on other computers. I just copied them to mine and created new VMs around them, but they work fine. All the .vdi files were created on my machine. Not sure if that affects anything. Update: WinMount can mount the file.. so the problem seems to be with vmware-mount.

• How to connect 2 virtual hosts running on the same machine?

  I have 2 virtual hosts running on my Windows XP laptop. One is Ubuntu running inside vmware player. The other is MS virtual PC (so I can test with IE6 ). The Ubuntu virtual host is running my web application with apache. I can point my browser on my laptop at the Ubuntu IP and view my web app. I read this post http://stackoverflow.com/questions/197792/how-to-connect-to-host-machine-from-within-virtual-pc-image and was able to get my Virtual PC to ping my physical machine using the loopback adapter. But I'm stuck on getting my Virtual PC to see my web application running in the Ubuntu vmware player host. I appreciate any suggestions.

• Friday Fun: Factory Balls – Christmas Edition

  Your weekend is almost here, but until the work day is over we have another fun holiday game for you. This week your job is to correctly decorate/paint the ornaments that go on the Christmas tree. Simple you say? Maybe, but maybe not! Factory Balls – Christmas Edition The object of the game is to correctly decorate/paint each Christmas ornament exactly as shown in the “sample image” provided for each level. What starts off as simple will quickly have you working to figure out the correct combination or sequence to complete each ornament. Are you ready? The first level serves as a tutorial to help you become comfortable with how to decorate/paint the ornaments. To move an ornament to a paint bucket or cover part of it with one of the helper items simply drag the ornament towards that area. The ornament will automatically move back to its’ starting position when the action is complete. First, a nice coat of red paint followed by covering the middle area with a horizontal belt. Once the belt is on move the ornament to the bucket of yellow paint. Next, you will need to remove the belt, so move the ornament back to the belt’s original position. One ornament finished! As soon as you complete decorating/painting an ornament, you move on to the next level and will be shown the next “sample Image” in the upper right corner. Starting with a coat of orange paint sounds good… Pop the little serrated edge cap on top… Add some blue paint… Almost have it… Place the large serrated edge cap on top… Another dip in the orange paint… And the second ornament is finished. Level three looks a little bit tougher…just work out your pattern of helper items & colors and you will definitely get it! Have fun decorating/painting those ornaments! Note: Starting with level four you will need to start using a combination of two helper items combined at times to properly complete the ornaments. • How to install ubuntu ultimate edition using Wubi?

  I had some trouble installing Ubuntu Ultimate Edition 2.9 on my friend's computer using Wubi. Wubi just doesn't accept installation and gives only 2 options - 'Demo & Install' and 'Learn more'. Tried searching the internet for a solution but couldn't find anything. Is it Wubi's fault or is it not designed to give support for UE? If latter, what is the alternative to it (without actually giving Ubuntu UE a seperate partition).
