• How do I leverage the power of my desktop from my laptop?

  I have a powerful desktop, and a decent laptop. My laptop is my primary machine. When I'm home, I'd like to "tap into" the power of my desktop while using my laptop. I'm not thinking a solution like "remoting in" and actually using my desktop from my laptop. I mean sending work to the desktop when my laptop is taxed in a seamless way. Is this possible at all? How would I do it? I'll do whatever is necessary to my desktop to enable this if it's feasible. My laptop has Vista installed.

• Windows 7 on Laptop: Show 3 power Profiles instead of just 2

  The only thing I miss from Vista on W7 is that, you can click the batery icon and select one of three power profiles without having to open the Energy option Window. Can I archieve this on W7 Without having to install a third party tool? I have tried one, but with so many bugs and problems, but I guess there are maybe one tool out there that works fine. • Laptop automatic shutdown after 2 seconds

  I'm trying to insvestigate which component produces this behavior. Other indications show it may be the GPU but I wonder if anyone knows more. It's a Toshiba Satellite X200 description: AC power shows the power being fed normally, when turned on the fan works and it appears to be starting up but after 2 seconds it shuts down with only the 'AC power connected" led on. -- seconds are about up to 4,maybe not 2 exactly.

I learned to need an active minidisplay port to vga or minidisplay port to dvi cable. Here's my problem. I want to buy minidisplay port to dvi but my country doesn't have it but I can find display port to active dvi cable. I have a minidisplay port to display port cable. If I buy Sapphire ACTIVE DP TO SL-DVI CABLE will my third monitor work? I mean I will plug mini display port to display port cable first and after I will plug active dp to dvi cable. Will it work? • Anyone have any experience with bargain laptop batteries?

  I've got an oldish D820 that's got a 100% dead battery. I know that I could, in theory, take it apart and replace bad cells in the battery. I'm not really comfortable with doing that. I also know that there are various places that sell replacement batteries for 20% to 80% of the cost that Dell would charge. Does anyone have any experiences with buying more than a couple of these off-brand batteries? If a battery goes boom, it could be really ugly, so I'd rather not risk it, but at the same time, the dell batteries are really expensive... Any opinions on these ebay / off-brand battery vendors? Thanks!

• Toshiba laptop only shows black screen with mouse pointer after starting up

  I only see black screen after the startup. It just shows the logo and the status bar upon start, then it goes black screen with moveable cursor. I tried alt+ctrl+del, but it doesn't work. I pressed shift 5 times and it makes a sound. I already removed battery and restarted it, but still the same. I can go to safe mode and scanned thru there. Still, desktop won't show up. Don't know what else to check?

  This question is inspired by another SU question I came across earlier today: What to do with old hard drives? It made me think about two long-dead laptops I have with perfectly good screens still inside. One is a Dell Inspiron 5100 and the other is an Averatec E1200, but responses need not be geared towards those particular models' screens. Rules, based heavily on the original question's: Objectives and suggestions to keep in mind when you post an answer : Should showcase your geekiness, be plain ol' fun, serve a social purpose or benefit the community. Your answer need not be limited to only one screen. For a really good answer, I'll go out and buy additional leftover screens. Your answer need not be limited to one project per screen. If additional accessories need be purchased, make sure they are common. Don't tell me to get a moon rock or something. The projects you suggested should serve a useful purpose; art is nice, but functional art is way better. Thanks in advance, folks. EDIT: Found another related question. Fun projects to do with an old 17" LCD monitor EDIT 2: I, for one, am enjoying the new outpouring of creativity here. Best fifty bucks... I mean, rep points... I ever spent. EDIT 3: That does it. At the end of the week, there was a tie for most votes between the accepted answer and the game platform answer. The game platform answer was cooler, but less reasonable as a project to actually do; in other words, it was more moon rocky. • How to set the laptop screen brightness programatically?

  I'm currently migrating to openbox without gnome session. In unity i can use the vendor keys to set the screen brightness, but in openbox I'm on my own. /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness works fine, the problem is that I need sudo to set the brightness and that wouldn't work with keyboard mappings. xbacklight -get/set doesn't do or output anything. I don't really want to use xrandr --brightness. Are there any other options or a way to fix the problems with xbacklight or acpi_video0 ?

• Why Does My Laptop Freeze Up When Docked?

  I have a Dell Latitude D520. First with Windows XP and now with Windows 7, it completely freezes/locks up if I dock it while it's awake. If I hibernate/sleep, dock, then wake/resume, everything's fine. I installed the Dell Notebook System Software for Vista (No Win7 version available) and updated the bios to the latest version but the problem persists. As long as I remember to put this thing in standby before I dock it, it's extremely reliable--it survives my daily commute and heavy use and typically only reboots a few times a month. Any other ideas for things I can try?

• Trying to build a history of popular laptop models

  A requirement on a software project is it should run on typical business laptops up to X years old. However while given a specific model number I can normally find out when it was sold, I can't find data to do the reverse... for a given year I want to see what model numbers were released/discontinued. We're talking big-name, popular models like Dell Latitude/Precision/Vostro, Thinkpads, HP, etc. The data for any model is out there but getting a timeline is proving hard. Sites like Dell are (unsurprisingly) geared around current products, and even Wikipedia isn't proving very reliable. You'd think this data must have been collated by manufacturers or enthusiasts, surely?

• Asus F5N laptop built-in card reader driver problem

  I have an Asus F5N X50N-AP011C. I have manually installed Windows 7 x64 on it, replacing the original Windows Vista. It also automatically installed a card reader driver, but it can no longer read xD cards. The driver shows in the device manager as "Generic- xD/SDMMC/MS/Pro USB device" (under "drives" - and a drive is also shown in Windows Explorer). The same card reader once used to work with xD cards. I also tried to manually install drivers from this website: http://www.station-drivers.com/page/realtek.htm - the RTS 5158 but it didn't work (it shows as USB device in device manager, but not as a drive in Windows Explorer). Does anyone know what card reader my model has built-in? (I think it's the 5158 but I don't know how to verify that - there's also no hint in the System Information tool, only the driver name is listed under "drives") how it is connected internally? if there is a better Windows 7 x64 driver?

• Ultra-Portable Laptop or Tablet PC for Development and Sketching

  I am a software developer that primarily writes in PHP, [X]HTML, CSS, Javascript, C# and C++. I use Eclipse for web development, Visual Studio 2008 for C++ and C# work, TortoiseSVN, Subversion server for local repositories, SQL Server Express, Apache and MYSQL. I also use Office 2007 for word processing and spreadsheets and use Vista Ultimate 64 as my primary operating system. The only other things I do on my laptop are watch movies, surf the internet and listen to music. I currently have a Acer Aspire 5100 (1.4 GHz AMD Turion X2, 2 GB of RAM and a 15.4" screen). This thing does not cut it in performance or portability, and in addition, my DVD drive failed. And before anybody posts about vista: I have had XP Professional 32 on it for the last two years, and recently upgraded to Vista 64. It is actually faster (with areo disabled) then XP; so it is not the OS that is causing the laptop to be slow. I usually sketch a lot, for explaining things, developing user interfaces and software architecture. Because of my requirements, I was thinking about a Lenovo X61 Tablet PC. It outperforms my current laptop, is significantly more portable, and... is a tablet. My question is: do any other software developers use this (or other tablets) for programming? Does it help to be able to sketch on the computer itself? And is it capable of being a good development machine? Will it handle the above software listed? If not, what is the best ultra-portable laptop that is good for programming? Or are ultra-portable laptops even good for programming? I could manage with my 15.4" screen, but am spoiled by my two 19" at my home desktop and my job's workstation.

I have an IBM ThinkPad T42 laptop, and I have some troubles with built-in bluetooth, because in Hardware Drivers, there are no drivers for it, and in Bluetooth settings, it shows, that it has no BT devices. If I plug in an USB Bluetooth adapter, I can use easily Wammu for my mobile backup. I have no setting in BIOS, to enable, or disable it(if disable wireless refers to Wi-fi, but it is enabled too). I have re-built windows, to see if that fixed the problem, it didn't. I've upgraded the BIOS to see if that would help, still same problem. I'm out of ideas :-(

• Keeping folder display the same as it was left

  In Word 2007 (and also on previous versions I have used), when I open folders, they open with icons or a list. I like 'detail' display and change it to that. I like detail because I can see which file is most recent and the size. But the next time I open the same folder, it opens back to icons or list but not details. How can I get it to stay where I left it? Thanks.

• Is there an easy way to (temporarily) disable the display timeout?

  In KDE 3.5 there was the powermanager plugin for the kicker panel, where one could easily switch between different profiles. So normally, I want the display to go to sleep after, say, 10 minutes of user inactivity. But when I watch a video, this should not happen. I know I could go via the KDE launcher, settings, powermanager, and change the setting. But this is too complicated for daily use. I also know there are those activities. But I don't want to change background etc., just the display timeout. Furthermore, when I tried this, many of the open apps simply crashed and got restarted. I simply don't like this approach. Preferably, it would be something to plug-in to the panel, which opens a menu to select the profile -- as it was with KDE 3.5. Is there a similar solution I missed?

• How do I change local display resolution via SSH?

  I have a machine running Ubuntu Server 12.04 LTS and I'm having problems with the local monitor. The Dell flat panel I'm using only displays this message while the computer running: "Cannot Display This Video Mode" and then the information: "Optimum resolution 1280x1024 60Hz". I'm fairly new to using an operating system wholly via command line but I'm learning fast. :) I can access the server fine via SSH so using it is not a problem. However, for where it is positioned at the moment, it would be much more convenient to use the computer locally. I'm just wondering how to change the local screen resolution via SSH to something usable by my monitor. Thanks for your time! BTW: I have also tried switching displays and I still have the same problem. Also BTW: I tried putting in the xrandr command and all I get back is: Can't open display
