  • ProStar gaming laptop, which had Ubuntu 10.10, won't boot past Grub. Thoughts?

    At work we have some high-end gaming laptops we use for their dual GPUs. The machines have second generation i7 CPUs, and came with Windows 7. On most of them I installed Ubuntu 10.10, and all was fine. There were two laptops that I wanted to repurpose and wanted to reinstall the OS. It boots the CD (burned Ubuntu installation CD, I've tried 10.10, 11.10, and 12.04, as well as CentOS 6), and when Grub tried to boot the kernel, I just get a cursor blinking in the upper left corner of the screen. I tried the disabling of ACPI and the other items in the advanced menu, but nothing works. I could still boot to the current Linux installation though. I was able to install Windows 7 again, and use WUBI, but I think that works because it uses the Windows bootloader and not Grub. How could it have worked before and not now? I have confirmed that the CD is fine, as are the hard drive and CD drive. I also had the same problem with Debian, and had to boot through Windows 7 to install it.

    does anyone know how to display a number on the screen? I can load the data and create a x/y graph. Now instead of showing the graph, I load a data value from a text file, and I want to display that number on the screen. Does anyone know what function i can use? ....... NSString *data =[myText objectAtIndex:1]; ....... so now data = 1, i want to display the value of the 'data' which is 1 on the screen.

  • linux display drivers

    I've run into a major display problem on newly installed fedora 11, on my 6 years old pc which runs a pentium4 2.4 GHz processor, 1 gb ddr ram, intel 845 motherboard with integrated graphics card. When i open an image or play a video, my complete screen turns garbled. I simply cannot make out whats on my screen. With difficulty i have to close the image/video window and move around the folder window to clean the screen image. Is it because of my display drivers? How can i fix it? I also ran into mp3 plugins and flash issues which i was able to resovle. I'm new to linux, the sole purpose of isntalling it on my old pc was to learn linux but this display problem is frustrating me. Thanks, Salman

So I'm thinking of using my laptop's monitor for it. Both machines are running on Fedora linux. Edit: Both machines are connected to the same wireless network. PC needs to log in before it can connect to the network if I'm not mistaken.   • Is there a point to using theft tracking software like Prey on my laptop, if you have login security?

    Hey, so I have a Thinkpad that I use in a variety of places (coffee shops, work, etc.). I don't generally abandon it, but I figure there's a chance I might get careless and it gets stolen at some point. I was thinking of installing something like Prey (http://preyproject.com/), but my OS installs are password secured, and on top of that, I have a fingerprint reader that you need just to get through the BIOS. So: is there actually any benefit to setting up software that tracks the laptop's whereabouts? I imagine that either: The laptop won't boot or login, if the thief doesn't get past the security. If the thief goes around said security somehow, presumably they've split the laptop for parts or bypassed BIOS security, gotten stuck on Windows security and formatted it. Given that it's highly unlikely that the thief would go to the trouble, what's the utility in installing laptop tracking software like Prey?

  • Is it normal for an AC adapter to drop voltage if it's not used by a laptop?

    I'm currently investigating the livelihood of a laptop adaptor and I noticed, unlike another adaptor it drops voltage to almost zero after I also attempt to measure its current [while it did show voltage at first, before measuring current]. The other adaptor normally shows voltage and then normally shows some current and then if it turns to measure voltage, it shows it normally again. I assume the adaptor is faulty, however, I want to make sure if laptop adaptors turn off themselves if they aren't used normally by a laptop.

It seems that where I live, SATA1 notebook HDDs aren't really available (only if you wait for a few weeks for them to be delivered), and they cost more than SATA2 HDDs.     Hi, I have a 3 yr old laptop (Thinkpad T61) which runs seemingly much hotter than it used to. It's not uncomfortable to touch, but I wonder whether I should do something about it. It does get uncomfortable if I have it on my lap (which I rarely need to do). I haven't made any mods to the laptop other than a bigger HD, and I recently cleaned up the inside (superficially - I didn't remove the fan). Are fans items that should be changed regularly?     How to turn of the display in Windows 8 without locking or making computer go to sleep ? The problem is that when I enable ‘Turn off display after x minutes’ feature from control panel, the device goes into sleep after ‘x’ minutes. It seems that both the options – turn off display/put computer to sleep are connected. It devices goes automatically to sleep mode as soon as the display is turned off. So, is there any method to turn off the display of the device without it going into sleep mode ? Someone wrote in the microsoft forum " The whole key to this problem seems to be the "Turn off the Display" setting. If you have that set to 5 minutes, 10 minutes, 15 minutes, etc...the computer will go to sleep one minute after you lock the screen. With this setting set to "Never", it doesn't do it. So something is wrong there." I want to turnoff the display but don't want to lock the device. Is that also possible ? Thanks

  • My laptop adapter has just faintly chirped like a cricket. Should I not plug it into my laptop again?

    The DC end that goes into the laptop was unplugged and the AC end was plugged into the mains (actually the plug sucks, so it could have been that it was...you know...just on the border. Getting and losing contact many times in a short amount of time if I moved the cable a bit) ...So one of these times that I just touched the cable, it did this chirping cricket sound and I unplugged it immediately. It did smell a bit weird, but I'm not sure if that's normal (due to heat or whatever).. So, should I be afraid of if? Can it kill my laptop if I try charging it? I only have around half an hour of battery left. Please help. Hope this is the right StackExchange site to ask. Thank you in advance

I think it cant find the images in given directory. Can Anybody help me?
