• suggestions for someone studying for java certification

  I have been working with java (J2EE) for about 4 years. I have been putting off the certification for a while now. I bought the exam last year and still have not taken the exam. it expires in june so I am going to give it a shot. I know certifications don't get jobs but interviews but where I work...certification will put a 'stamp' on my resume and I think it'll popout in the eyes of the management. Anyways, I am going for JAVA 6. Can someone suggest some good mock exams that are kind of new and relevant. I came across this link but most of these exams are fairly old. I am using kathy Sierra's book for studying. Any other resources/pointers?

• Customising Symfony Admin Generator Form

  Hi, I've generated the backend of my application, and am now just 'jazzing' the forms up (adding correct labels, validation rules etc). One thing I'd like to do is add a map (Google) which updates the marker as an address is entered into the form, then allows the user to drag it to correct the lat/lng should it be a little off. My question is, how can I customise the output of the form - I've read the docs (1.0,1.1,1.2 also) and it all seems very confusing. Customising forms not generated with the admin generator I know how to do using renderRow(); etc; but finding a way to add a little bit of HTML to the forms is making my eyes hurt! There's so much out of date stuff on the web regarding Symfony it's hard to know what to trust! If anyone can point me in the right direction that'd be great. Best Regards, Rich

• Python+Windows+GStreamer = Impossible (for me)?

  Hi :) essentially, my problem is, ater a long time searching, finding only this other question, i decided i was just going to ask my own... i am on windows 7 with python 2.6 and ossbuild GStreamer, but i am trying to get the python binding for it, and struggling. i have got gst-python from http://gstreamer.freedesktop.org/src/gst-python/ but as my eyes and research tell me, it does not work in the setup.py way, and the other question has a link to a site that he says has a binary avaiable, which no longer does, http://www.gstreamer-winbuild.ylatuya.es/doku.php?id=download and even the sdk is gone, and ossbuild dont seem to have anything useful either. so essentially, my question is, can anyone tell me a method, however convoluted, of getting my setup so if i write a script for (py)gst, with an import gst it will work? not the best of explanations... im tired k? xxx :)

• XML jQuery Problem

  This code for parsing my xml and appending via jquery seems to work great in every browser but Chrome (Mac only, the windows version of chrome works fine) and explorer. I'm not aware of any glaring issues in the code so I thought some fresh eyes might help. • NSColor, 10.6 and Gamma 2.2

  With Snow Leopard the default gamma changed from 1.8 to 2.2. I happen to be working on a few Mac apps that use a very dark custom colour scheme provided by Cocoa. On 10.5 it looks fine but on 10.6 with the new gamma it's much darker and really hard on the eyes. The colour scheme is defined using numerous [NSColor colorWithCalibratedRed:green:blue:alpha:] objects within a theme class. Is there any way to 'convert' an NSColor object so that it displays on 10.6 exactly as it would on 10.5 with the old 1.8 gamma? I know this can be achieved globally from within System Preferences but that's not what I'm after.

  Hi! I'm wondering what color-scheme is more energy-saving for AMOLED display? I've already decided to manage c-scheme according to ambient light, thanks to this post: Somewhat-proof, the link posted by nickf: Ironic Sans: Ow My Eyes. If you read that in a well lit room, the black-on-white will be the most pleasant to read. If you read it in a dark room, the white-on-black will be nicer. But if I want to save battery power, should I use bright content with light background or vice versa? Is it possible anyway (they say it's not)? Thanks!

• Access DoCmd.OpenForm Not Working

  Looking for a second set of eyes to figure out my problem with an Access form filter. I created a search form, when filled in, appends search criteria to a string variable (strQuery) that is put in place to the [WhereCondition] for opening a form. However, when the script is ran, nothing comes up except for a filtered form with no records. Here is the line that opens the form: DoCmd.OpenForm "ADD_NEW_NCMR", , , strQuery Before the line is ran, strQuery equals: 1=1 AND [NCMR].[NCMR_NUM] = '12-129' The form name, and table.column combination are all correct. In fact, using the DCount function returns the result of 1, which is correct for this query, and returns the correct number for other queries as well. This makes me think that there is nothing wrong with the where condition. DCount("[NCMR_NUM]", "NCMR", strQuery)

  I am validating constructor and method arguments, as I want to the software, especially the model part of it, to fail fast. As a result, constructor code often looks like this public MyModelClass(String arg1, String arg2, OtherModelClass otherModelInstance) { if(arg1 == null) { throw new IllegalArgumentsException("arg1 must not be null"); } // further validation of constraints... // actual constructor code... } Is there a way to do that with an annotation driven approach? Something like: public MyModelClass(@NotNull(raise=IllegalArgumentException.class, message="arg1 must not be null") String arg1, @NotNull(raise=IllegalArgumentException.class) String arg2, OtherModelClass otherModelInstance) { // actual constructor code... } In my eyes this would make the actual code a lot more readable.   Straight forward question: Is there an advantage or disadvantage to concatenating variables within strings or using curly braces instead? Concatenated: $greeting = "Welcome, ".$name."!"; Curly braces: $greeting = "Welcome, {$name}!"; Personally, I've always concatenated my strings because I use UEStudio and it highlights PHP variables a different color when concatenated. However, when the variable is not broken out, it does not. It just makes it easier for my eyes to find PHP variables in long strings, etc. EDIT: People are confusing this about being about SQL. This is not what this question is about. I've updated my examples to avoid confusion.

  Hi, We're using XML Digital Signatures for signing and verifying our license keys. The signing works fine and has been running smoothly. The XML license file contains a few (plaintext) details about the license, along with a binary signature. We'd like to encode (I don't say encrypt) those plaintext details (license duration, user name, etc, etc.) so they're not immediately visible to prying eyes. Is there a standard (eg, base 64 or something else) that people use in this situation? It doesn't need to be secure or particularly clever, just enough to conceal the information in Notepad. • mysqli query not working when variable inserted

  Hi Everyone, I need an extra pair of eyes! I have a super-simple query: $result = $mysqli->query("SELECT post_id FROM blog_posts WHERE post_uri = 'the-test-post' LIMIT 1"); $row = $result->fetch_array(); and this gives me the post_id. However, if I insert a variable for post_uri, the result is empty. Ways I tried of which none worked: $result = $mysqli->query("SELECT post_id FROM blog_posts WHERE post_uri = '".$post_uri."' LIMIT 1"); $result = $mysqli->query("SELECT post_id FROM blog_posts WHERE post_uri = ".$post_uri." • Color Themes for Eclipse?

  I am a recovering Emacs user, who is trying to ease into Eclipse usage. (Since I'm encouraging the rest of the team to use it, I guess I should at least try to get along). My current excuse is that it hurts my eyes. I'm currently using the excellent zenburn theme in emacs, and would love to find it for eclipse. However, I find that changing my color theme every few months makes for a great way to procrastinate, so ideally I'd like to find a repository for eclipse color themes. There don't appear to be any eclipse themes indexed by Google, so all the great themes must be sitting on your hard disk somewhere. Please share them. Thanks

• Resharper: how to force introducing new private fields at the bottom of the class?

  Resharper offers a very useful introduce and initialize field xxx action when you specify a new parameter in a constructor like: Constructor (int parameter) The only (minor) nuisance is that it puts the new field at the beginning of the class - and I'm a fan of putting private parts as far away as possible from the prying eyes of strangers ;). If, however, you already have some private fields in the class, Resharper will put the new field "correctly" (note the quotes, I don't want to start a flame war over this issue) next to those, even if they are at the end of the class. Is there a way to force Resharper to always put new fields at the end of the class? UPDATE: OK, I forgot to mention I know about the "Type Members Layout in Options" feature, but some concrete help on how to modify the template to achieve fields placement would be nice.

  I recently created a Sinatra app with a login form (no basic auth). To prevent access to the app unless the user logged in I put a before block in place before do unless request.path_info == '/login' authenticated? end end I quickly realized that this prevented me from accessing resources in the public directory like my style sheet and logo unless authenticated first as well. To get around that I changed my filter to the following: before do unless request.path_info == '/login' || request.path_info == "/stylesheets/master.css" || request.path_info == "/images/logo.png" authenticated? end end If there were lots of resources I needed to provide exceptions to this way of making them would quickly become overwhelming. What is a better way to code this so I can make exceptions for the public directory or even its specific sub-directories and files like /stylesheets, /images, /images/bg.png but not /secret or /secret/eyes-only.pdf? Or ... Is there a completely different best-practice to handle this situation of locking down everything except the stuff related to logging in (handlers, views, resources)?

• Ubuntu + LigHTTPd: Server requests taking ages

  I've had an issue since upgrading my distro a couple of weeks ago from hardy; receiving data after making a request has increasing intervals of nothing, as you can see from the picture below. http://i49.tinypic.com/2w5lvr9.png I have since reinstalled fresh from an Ubuntu 10.04 Server (i386) disk, but am still having the same issues. I'm running on a LigHTTPd, MySQL, PHP5 stack. The surprising thing is, that local browsing using lynx is super fast, as expected. Initially, after reinstalling, I copied over the old configuration files from the previous installation, but have since reinstalled LigHTTPd and rebuilt the config file from scratch. The only correlation I could find, was that I attempted installation of ionCube and Zend Optimizer for a script I was testing, however I would think that it could no longer impact seeing I had reinstalled the OS. I have also removed Suhosin just in case, however it had no impact. I'm thinking it possibly has something to do with networking, but I wouldn't know where to start. The server is manually assigned an IP by it's MAC address on the router. The fact that the time seems to be exponential (to a point) worries me. I've tried strace'ing the LigHTTPd and MySQL processes, however I couldn't see anything obvious, not that I'd really know what I'm looking for. RAM and CPU usage don't seem to be out of the ordinary, but I can't say its perfect.. I'm hoping someone has experienced the same, or can point me in a direction, as searching has proved fruitless as I don't know anything specific. Config files can be posted, if requested.

  hey folks, I try to realize a little game project to dive deeper into OO programming (winforms c++/cli). I already started coding but now I´d like to make a re-design. For the beginning the game should consist of four parts like game-engine, user interface, highscore and playground. I've become more and more about design a la McConnell : wide use of encapsulation, quality code that gives you warm fuzzy feelings when you read it, maintainability over execution performance, etc..., whereas many of my co-workers have followed a different path of fewer middlemen layers getting in the way, code that is right out in the open and easier to locate, even if harder to read, and performance-centric designs. I have recently come across some extremely bad (in my eyes) legacy code that lends itself to chaos (someHugeJavafile.js) which contains a lot of the logic used in many of the pages. Let's say for example that you have a Form that you need to complete. 1. Personal Details 2. Address Information 3. Little bit more about yourself You don't want to overload the person with all the fields at once, so you decide to split it up into steps. Do you create separate pages for Personal Details, Address Information and a Little bit more about yourself. Do you create controls for each and hide and show them on a postback or using some update panel? Do you use jQuery and do some checking to ensure that the person has completed the required fields for the step and show the new "section" by using .show()? How do you usually find the balance?

• How to write a tool, inverting colors in Windows?

The trick is, it needs to hold under the weight of strange looking domains like: www.champa.kku.ac.th Looking at this one myself with human eyes, I still guessed it incorrectly: thought the domain would be kku.ac.th but that gives a dns error when visiting. I have a Nib with a view that has a class identity set to TestView In my view controller, I use the following code: CGRect myRect = CGRectMake(0, 0, 320,240); TestView *myTest = [[TestView alloc] initWithFrame:myRect]; [self.view addSubview:myTest]; I have a NSLog in the TestView class's initWithFrame that fires when the above code is executed, but the view doesn't appear in the view controllers view. • Why am I getting programs stuck in log_wait_commit under Linux?

  There is something subtly wrong with my Linux install that I just can't locate. It is Ubuntu Lucid Lynx (10.04) 64-bit. Hardware is a Dell Optiplex 960: Intel Core 2 Quad CPU, 8Gb of RAM, 2x 300Gb HDDs. /home is ext2 on one disk and everything else is on the other (/ is also ext3). I have VirtualBox running a 64-bit Vista image for Outlook calendaring, but the heavyweight apps are IntelliJ, NetBeans, MySQL and Opera. Opera also loads my mail (IMAP) of which there is over 10,000 messages. The problem is that Opera stalls for a few seconds from time-to-time. Watching the process list shows it's in log_wait_commit which means (as far as I have figured out) the filesystem is holding things up. Sometimes I can make this happen by doing a subversion update, but usually it happens for no reason I can see. It usually happens to Opera, but I've seen NetBeans go under, too. It doesn't make the app crash - it's just completely unresponsive for a few seconds. Googling has not helped. The closest I got was to remove the sync attribute in the file system. This achieved nothing. On the advice of a Linux guru friend, I lowered /proc/sys/vm/dirty_writeback_centisecs to 300, but that didn't do anything, either. And it was all he could think of. What is going on and can I fix it? (And how?)
