• USB flash drive unreadable after a few minutes on Windows 8

  I recently got a new computer with Windows 8. I a have a number of large backup files I am moving from my old PC to my new one. I was able to successfully copy the files to a couple 16 GB flash drives. When I try to copy the files to my new computer, the process starts just fine but after copying about 4 GB of files, the copy stops. If I look at the drive in explorer, the drive is there, but I just get a busy cursor that stays indefinitely if I click it. If I unplug the flash drive and plug it back in, everything is fine again... for a couple minutes. I've tried copying from both flash drives with the same result. I've also tested this on the USB 2.0 and 3.0 ports on my motherboard with the same result (the drives are USB 2.0) It's also puzzling that this is happening since I previously used one of the same flash drives to install Windows 8 on this computer in the first place without any difficulty.

  I have an Acer Aspire 3500WLMi laptop. It currently has a 40gb hard drive which I would like to upgrade. Could someone talk me through the process? I've listed my concerns/queries... Can I buy and install any 2.5" SATA or IDE hard drive into this machine? Should I buy somesort of USB caddy and clone my existing drive onto the new one via USB then physically swap the drives over? My current disk is partitioned to include a small amount of space for a Ubuntu install. Will a clone keep the current partition sizes or is it best for me to repartition once I've cloned? • Windows 7 Locks Up or Blue Screens after installing additional hard drive

  I've had my home theater pc for over a year now and it's been running with no problems what so ever. I got myself a new Seagate 2 TB hard drive for the holidays and ever since installing it the pc now randomly locks up or blue screens either upon putting it to sleep or waking it from sleep. The only thing I've tried so far is updating the firmware on the hard drive. The hard drive in question is this one (http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=4846365). I do have my minidump file saved off on my home theater pc however right now I'm at work and don't have access to it. Please help! Thank you!

• Partitioning a bootable Flash drive

  Is it possible to have a 2 partition Flash drive that looks like the following: A partition that is bootable to OS X (this will require a GUID partition table) A second partition formatted either FAT32 or NTFS that is readable on both OS X and various flavors of Windows I have set up a disk using Disk Utility on the Mac, and it boots fine with a second FAT32 partition... but Windows does not see it. Any flavor of Windows wants to format the entire drive. Has anyone done this, and if so, can you explain the steps you followed? EDIT: Making it bootable is no problem. I have that. I'm wondering how to make the second partition on a Flash drive visible to Windows. It's possible that the "second partition" is the problem, and I need Windows to be first, and HFS to be second. I'll try that tonight.

• Dropped Dell XPS has hard-drive trouble

  Yesterday, my mom dropped her laptop to the floor and got the blue screen of death after trying to boot the system. I was able to start a Fedora live CD and get some of her stuff off the hard drive, but I cannot seem to be able to install Windows on it. The installation starts loading files and then the computer turns off. I am thinking that she might need a new hard drive. Any ideas? Edit: I actually was able to boot the Windows XP installation but it is saying that no hard disk is detected. How can this be possible if I was able to mount the drive on fedora yesterday?

• Cannot open an external hard drive in Windows

  In Windows 7, I was installing wubi ubuntu to an external hard drive when suddenly it disconnected from the PC. After I connected it back to PC, and double clicked the drive's icon, Windows didn't show the content of the disk but asked me whether I wanted to format it. The hard drive has only one partition. Its format is NTFS. I also connected the disk to Windows XP. It makes the Windows Explorer super slow and I cannot open the disk as well. I can open the disk on Ubuntu and Mac. Is it possible to restore the disk and make it run in Windows? Thanks

• Create a share on iscsi drive in Windows Server 2012

  I am brand new to server administration but I don't belive im trying to do anything to exotic I have a windows server 2012 (standard) and a drobo 800i My goal is to setup company shares on the iscsi target I have setup on the drobo So far I have: initialized the iscsi and connected made the iscsi disk read/write(it default started as read only) formatted and mounted it (as drive E:) from the server local desktop I can see and write files to the E:\ drive in shares wizard I do not see it as a volume option when I view the volumes window I see (e: drobo Fixed 16tb 16tb) I'm new to everything but I would think since its a mounted drive I should be able to share a folder on it but it appears its not that straight forward suggestions?

• Same SCSI drive appears multiple times on the controller list

  Hi, I have an Adaptec AHA-2940UW SCSI adapter, to which I connected a single Atlas 10K III drive (and nothing more). When my computer loads up, the pre-OS Adaptec screen shows (I believe this is called the POST screen), where I can see the Atlas drive listed many times (i.e. with ID0, ID1, ... ID5, ID7, ID8,...,ID15 [ID6 is the adapter itself]) Using the same HD on an Adaptec AHA-2940UB the disk only shows once Since my OS hasn't been installed yet, I'm not sure if this is a problem (I would guess it is), and if so - how to solve it. Termination and multiple LUNs come mind, but the cable provides termination and I don't see why a hard drive would request multiple LUNs, especially considering it is not jumpered at all, and multuple LUN support is disabled in the Adaptec controller BIOS (via the SCSISelect utility) Thank you

  I have Ubuntu Server 10.04 TLS installed on a Virtual Machine in a VirtualBox. The size of the Hard Drive is dynamic growing hard drive and the maximum is 32GB. At the beginning i had 4GB on the Hard Drive and the size of the .vdi was 4GB. Lately the size of data on the disk is 15GB but the size of the .vdi is almost 32GB. Why is that? How can i pack / optimize / defrag the HD so it will be the same size of the data on the disk? Thanks.

  Hybrid hard drive combines SSD with traditional hard drives. I know that SSD can fail much often than traditional hard drives. So I want to ask that, when the SSD part of the hybrid drive fails, would I still be able to use the traditional hard drive? If it won't work like that, then I will consider add-in SATA cards instead, as it delegates risk much better. EDIT: I guess it differs from model to model, so if yes what models would work.   Scenario: Old hdd is a Seagate 320gb SATA drive New hdd is a WD 320gb SATA drive Created an exact clone and replaced old hdd with new hdd. Boot up with new hdd, it gets into Windows 2003 server environment but things look weird. Lots of system event failures in the event viewer log. System is barely unusable, critical services are all down. Boot up with old hdd, everything is fine. QUESTION: Is it possible to do a simple clone of a Windows 2003 server system? All I'm changing is the hard drive, everything else stays the same (old CPU/old mobo/etc..)

• Cloning single disk drive to multiple drives simultaneously

  I am looking for a way to clone single disk drive to more than one disk drive at the same time. I have prepared system images on 1TB disks, and it takes almost 2 hours to clone one disk to another, and then it goes up exponentially, in order to have say 30 disks cloned. If it was possible to clone one disk to more than single target, it would simplify whole procedure a lot. Also, is there something that prevents this kind of operation? I mean, is there some special reason why every disk cloning software that I know about supports only single target drive? Thanks!

• Completely formatting a USB flash drive

  I have a Verbatim Store 'n' Go drive which by default comes with software in a partition which password protects the drive. I want to erase this partition, as it only works on Windows (I'm having to look at it now through a virtual machine on my Mac). I've tried using KillDisk to totally wipe the whole thing, but it doesn't seem to work, and this password-protecting partition always remains intact. Is there any program which will completely wipe a flash drive, no questions asked? Or is there a way to do it through the Verbatim software? I have the password and everything, I just can't find a way to fully format it. Cheers.

  Hi, In early January 2011, we completely switched to Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows 7. On our domain controller set up a DFS is that the users as "Z: drive" is displayed. The DFS was it in the same way during our time with Windows Server 2003 R2 and Windows XP. At the time it has always worked without problems. Since Windows 7, we have sometimes the case that when a user accesses to the Z drive, the Explorer will return to the workplace without a user can do. After two to three trials of the Explorer remains in the network drive and the users work. This phenomenon occurs irregularly and you can not restrict exactly why. In the event log at the time no obvious entries are logged. Does anyone know the problem or has had similar experiences? I am grateful for any help. Greetings, sY!v3Rs

  I've got a SSD as my primary hard drive. I have an external HDD hard drive which I use to store downloaded files. At the moment I have to delete 80 GB of that external hard drive. I realized that if I delete it normally, it would probably go to the recycle bin of my SSD. I am wondering how I can delete the files on my HDD without affecting the SSD or putting any files on it.   I have two 2 TB external USB hard drives, call them HD1 and HD2. HD1 is USB 2, HD2 is USB 3. Each drive contains exactly one NTFS partition. I want to clone HD1 to HD2, because it's newer and much, much faster. What's the best way to do this? I don't want to do a copy-and-paste, I want to clone the whole partition. The new drive is actually a few bytes larger, so this should be possible? I don't have a second drive that can hold the image, so it would have to clone directly to the other disk (not to a file). How can I accomplish this on Windows 7? I know about Clonezilla but I would prefer not to have to boot from a CD or anything, as I don't have the capability to do that right now. I want to know if there's a way to do this while running Windows.

• Users own mapped network drives disappear when I set a GPP mapped drive

  All the clients use Windows 7 SP1 x64 Enterprise. The domain controllers are Windows Server 2008 R2. I have configured the GPP to map "\server\data" to first available drive letter starting with I:. The action is replace and I have set the Hide/Show this drive and Hide/Show all drives to "Show". I have set targeting to a specified security group. This works as expected and the drive is mapped to the correct users. The problem is that if the user has created their own mapped drives these mappings will disappear when the GPP mapping is applied. Only the mapped drives from the GPP is shown in Explorer. I have not found any other mention of this particular problem when I search the Internet and on TechNet there is no mention of what happens to drives already mapped.

• Running Ubuntu off a USB drive?

  I was wondering if a USB 2.0 Thumb drive has enough bandwidth to act as a primary system drive in an Ubuntu Linux server. More specifically an SAN server. I am running an iSCSI target, ZFS and NFS-kernel-server, BIND9 (Slave), and Openldap (Slave). I was thinking of resorting to a thumb drive because my new motherboard only has 4 SATA ports and I have 5 disks. 4 (ZFS Pool) 1 (System). And unless I get an expansion card there is no way to get more SATA ports. This "server" leans more twords a home server. I use in my lab with my VMware server. It provides storage, or atleast it did until it died. Would it still be better to go with the SATA hard disk?

• USB flash drive showing empty but half of the capacity is in Used

  Not sure if I should post my question in superuser, but it looks like the most appropriate place among all StackExchange sites. I have a 16GB Kingston DataTraveler USB drive. When I tried to use it this morning, it showed up nothing in there but yet its details showed that half of the capacity was in used. I tried it with OS X, Ubuntu, and Windows 7 and the results were the same. I tried to create a new folder and it worked. Apparently, the drive is working but somehow not showing my previously stored data. Note that I was still using the drive last night and there wasn't any problems. Following @rob's suggestion, du -h gave me: 16K ./.Trashes 960K ./.Spotlight-V100/Store-V1/Stores/2620683B-A38B-42F4-A247-45CAF4826ADE 976K ./.Spotlight-V100/Store-V1/Stores 1008K ./.Spotlight-V100/Store-V1 1.0M ./.Spotlight-V100 1.1M And, df -h gave me: /dev/sdb1 15G 7.9G 7.1G 53% /media/KINGSTON Confirming what I reported. Anyone got a clue/answer to this issue? Thanks.

  I bought this laptop used from a friend. The laptop has 500gb of storage; however, the drive is partioned. The C: drive has an allocated space of 50gb whereas the partition has 396gb allocated to it. How do i either take some of the space from the partition and move it to the C: drive, or get rid of the partition? I've done some searching and people say I'm supposed to be able to use "Disc Management" to "delete volume," but when i right click on the partition the "delete volume" is not enabled.   I've installed a WiFi Adapter in my Windows XP PC and created an ad-hoc network. I am able to connect to the network through my iPod Touch. On the same PC I have a LAN connection to the Internet. I need to share this internet connection to my iPod too. The problem is Windows did not assign an IP Address (even though assign IP address automatically is selected) to this WiFi network. When I tried to share the Internet connection, I got a message that LAN Network Adapter's IP address will be changed to 192.168.1.1. But if this happens I will not be able to connect to other devices/servers in my LAN Network. How do I share the Internet connection through WiFi?

• Limited connection whenever I connect to a Wi-Fi network outside the company

  Whenever I connect my work laptop to a wireless network outside of my company, the connection shows as Limited, and there is no internet access. I have tried several times by disabling/enabling the network adapter, restarting the computer... without success. Sometimes, after a while, without taking any action, it shows fine, and I have internet access. But can pass 2 hours before this happens. My computer is under a domain network, but I don't think that's the problem, because I can successfuly connect other computers belonging to same domain to other networks. • Trouble accessing network drives in Windows 7

  Hi, Recently purchased a LaCiE network drive. Connected it to my router, configured it, added a user for myself. Installed the "Network Assistant" that came with it - no problem. Went to My Computer Network, found the network drive - was prompted for a login/password to see the contents, types \user and password (leading slash to get rid of DOMAIN) and accesses contents. There is one open share that I can access/mount without problem and there's another share with my user name as set-up via the network drive's web-based config. Double-clicked on that, prompted again. user/password doesn't work! It says I have no permissions but the user/pass combination is PERFECT. Some Windows Vista posts talk about a Local Security Policy menu - but that's nowhere to be found. Any ideas? (Windows 7 Professional BTW).
