  • Installing 2 DDR3 Sticks in MB with 4 Slots

    Hey everyone, I just put together my first system that uses DDR3 memory. The motherboard I got is an ASUS M4A77T/USB3 and it has 4 DDR3 RAM slots. Looking in the manual for the MB it doesn't say anything about how to install the RAM as far as matching the pairs goes. I have 2 4GB sticks of RAM, and whether I put the sticks next to each other (of the 4 RAM slots, there are two blue ones next to each other and 2 black ones next to each other) or space them apart, The BIOS still shows that I have 8GB installed. I have been getting an IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL BSOD error, and have read in some other places that it could be hardware/RAM related. Does the RAM need to go in the A1, A2 slots (different colored but both A), or the A1 B1 slots? (A1 B1 are both the lovely blue color.) Any help would be awesome. THANKS!

  • Suggestions for splitting server roles amongst Hyper-V virtual servers / RAID6 or RAID10? / AppAssure

    We have 2 Hyper-V hosts at present running 1 virtual server that was converted from a physical box running all roles. My plan is to split the roles over various virtual machines, upgrading to the latest software versions as I go, and use the backup server as a standby in case the main server fails. AppAssure backup software has a feature called Virtual Standby, so the VHD's can be ready to be fired up on the backup server if necessary. Off-site backups will be done via external USB drive for now. I'm just seeking some input/suggestions into how I'm planning to split the roles out amongst various virtual servers. Also, I'm curious how to setup the storage on the servers. We do not have any NAS's, SAN'S or any budget for this. What would the best RAID level be to use? I'm thinking either RAID6 (which is currently used) however I'm concerned about the write speeds, or RAID10 but again I'm worried that I can only lose 1 drive (from the same mirror) as opposed to any 2 with RAID6. I realise I have a hot swap for this, but what if a further drive fails during a rebuild? Is the write penalty of RAID6 worth the extra reliability over RAID10? Or will it be too slow with all the roles I am planning, therefore RAID10 is my only real option? The reason for the needed redundancy is I am the only technician and I'm not always on-site. Options I've considered: 1) 5 drives in RAID6 set, 200gb for host OS, rest for VM storage. 1 drive for hot swap - this is how it is currently setup 2) 4 drives in RAID10 set, 200gb for host OS, rest for VM storage. 2 drives for hot swap 3) 4 drives in RAID10 set for VM storage, 2 drives in RAID1 set for host OS. No drives for hot swap - While this is probably the best option with the amount of drives I have, I don't like the idea of having no hot swap 4) 3 drives in RAID6 set for VM storage, 2 drives in RAID1 set for host OS. 1 drive for hot swap All options give us enough storage capacity for our files, etc. We don't have any budget for extra drives or extra hot swap HD chassis for the servers. We have about 70 clients and about 150 users.     I have a xen server with xen-4.1.3, linux-image-3.2.0-3-amd64, debian squeeze and 16Gb of RAM. The domain-0 has 1Gb of ram, the rest of memory belongs to the hypervisor. I want to start a guest domain with a minimal amount of memory and increase it runtime later. When I start a guest domain with 256Mb of ram and run xm mem-set domu 4Gb, I get ~3Gb only in domu and a guest domain free says: root@test:~# free total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 2830620 72868 2757752 0 2432 43504 -/+ buffers/cache: 26932 2803688 Swap: 1048572 0 1048572 And a guest domain dmesg says: [ 0.000000] Memory: 175912k/2883584k available (3527k kernel code, 448k absent, 2707224k reserved, 3210k data, 612k init) When I start a guest domain with 2Gb of ram I can run xm mem-set domu 7Gb and get ~7Gb of ram in a guest domain: root@test:~# free total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 6828228 74944 6753284 0 1328 12568 -/+ buffers/cache: 61048 6767180 Swap: 1048572 0 1048572 And a guest domain dmesg: [ 0.000000] Memory: 1674960k/16651264k available (3527k kernel code, 448k absent, 14975856k reserved, 3210k data, 612k init) How can I start a guest domain with a minimal amount of ram (256Mb) and increase it under 15Gb?

  • Is it possible to stream a file to and from servers without holding the data in ram?

    Hi everyone! PHP question (new to PHP after 10 years of Perl, arrggghhh!). I have a 100mb file that I want to send to another server. I have managed to read the file in and "post" it without curl (cannot use curl for this app). Everything is working fine on smaller files. However, with the larger files, PHP complains about not being able to allocate memory. Is there a way to open a file, line by line, and send it as a post ALSO line by line? This way nothing is held in ram thus preventing my errors and getting around strict limitations. Chris

    Hi, The background of my question is associated with Tesseract, the free OCR engine (1985-1995 by HP, now hosting in Google). It specifically requires an input file and an output file; the argument only takes filename (not stream / binary string), so in order to use the wrapper API such as pytesser and / or python-tesser.py, the OCR temp files must be created. I, however, have a lot of images need to OCR; frequent disk write and remove is inevitable (and of course the performance hit). The only choice I could think about is changing the wrapper class and point the temp file to RAM disk, which bring this problem up. If you have better solution, please let me know. Thanks a lot. -M

  • [Python] How can I speed up unpickling large objects if I have plenty of RAM?

    It's taking me up to an hour to read a 1-gigabyte NetworkX graph data structure using cPickle (its 1-GB when stored on disk as a binary pickle file). Note that the file quickly loads into memory. In other words, if I run: import cPickle as pickle f = open("bigNetworkXGraph.pickle","rb") binary_data = f.read() # This part doesn't take long graph = pickle.loads(binary_data) # This takes ages How can I speed this last operation up? Note that I have tried pickling the data both in using both binary protocols (1 and 2), and it doesn't seem to make much difference which protocol I use. Also note that although I am using the "loads" (meaning "load string") function above, it is loading binary data, not ascii-data. I have 128gb of RAM on the system I'm using, so I'm hoping that somebody will tell me how to increase some read buffer buried in the pickle implementation.

  • Why might PC3200 ECC ram be incompatible when upgrading?

    I had some 512MB PC3200 Kingston mem modules in a server, and I ordered replacement Kingston memory in 1GB sticks. The vendor said they were out of stock and I agreed to let them ship me "compatible" Samsung memory. However, after installing, the MB posted BIOS errors and wouldn't even boot to a BIOS screen. Both memory was ECC PC3200. Any ideas why that would happen?

    Mostly I still have that old 'ultraportable' laptop that is mostly like a pre-netbook era laptop and a friend and programmer needs a computer because the one he was using just broke and he has to wait until the new one arrive in 4-6 weeks ... This laptop has no LAN connection and CD-ROM so be prepared for a real challenge! All hardware is well supported on Windows XP (included drivers on the Windows XP CD) and on Linux out-of-the-box (but the screen need a special configuration.) Mostly any Linux that will work well with Skype (USB or regular headset), any MSN client and a text writer for code will do. What I have tested so far: Slitaz 2 don't boot because the floppy of GRUB4DOS don't see the USB drive (fully working and tested on my regular laptop), Damn Small Linux was working but was needing a special screen configuration that I don't remember (in the boot options of the floppy) and now I'm thinking about Puppy Linux that is seen to work totally out of the box with it but I will need an old Puppy version (1 or 2 I think) and the Wakepup floppy ... If you got some ideas to help or to try I'm open!

    I moved image from one machine to another. Problem is - I didn't shut down' instance, just suspended it. On machine #1 I have 32G and instance had 16Gb allocated. On machine #2 I have only 10G and instance won't resume (due to memory) But I can't lower amount of memory - I guess because machine in "suspended". Anyway to lower memory or "shut down" instance without powering? How do I start it on machine #2?

  • Does dual-channel work only with an even number of RAM sticks?

    I have noticed that on the ASUS P5QL Pro motherboard the BIOS says "Dual Channel Asymmetric Mode" during POST. The motherboard has three 2GB Kingston ValueRAM 800 MHz DIMMs populated in the first 3 slots from the CPU socket. I have not run any benchmarks to verify that dual-channel is somehow being used, but I believed that dual-channel has to have an even number of sticks (and for triple channel, a multiple of 3). Another example is the Intel DX58SO motherboard; it has four DIMM slots, yet it's an LGA 1366 motherboard which does triple-channel. Apparently triple-channel still works with four DIMMs, instead of falling back to dual-channel. What does the BIOS' POST message mean in those case? Is dual-channel really used for the first two DIMMs, with the other one being an odd one in single-channel mode?

    I have a laptop with a LAMP setup. The HDD is slow, which causes my unit tests to run slowly. I was wondering whether I could mount the web root the mysql database on some kind of ramdisk. From what I have read of ramdisks, they are non-persistent. Is there anyway to create a ramdisk that writes changes to an area of the hdd when shutting down and re-mounts the ramdisk on bootup?

  • Intel 1.83 Mac Mini upgraded to 1.5 gig for Snow Leopard

    Even though I've upgraded countless video cards, RAM, harddrives, motherboards in PCs... this will be my first mac mini RAM upgrade. I've watched the classic "putty knife" video. (Absurd method... but I guess it's what I'm stuck with.) I have a 1.83 Intel-based Mac Mini from 2007-2008, with 1 gig of RAM. (Two 512 sticks) Can I install 1 gig + 512 ? (Or do I have to throw away my existing sticks and buy two 1 gig sticks?) This old machine is rarely used... so I want to spend the absolute minimum on this RAM upgrade. We ONLY use it to run xCode... nothing more. But wanted to increase the RAM so we can install Snow Leopard. I have no idea how many pins the memory has. I printed out over FORTY pages of specs about this machine from "About this Mac"... but didn't find what I needed. Does this sound right: DDR2 SDRAM (but no mention of SO-DIMM) 667MHZ (but don't know if I can use faster also) Pin count: Unknown Computer model number: Unknown (But I "think" it's an MB138/A) PC2 RAM (unknown... not mentioned) 5300 (unknown... not mentioned) Mfg date: (unknown... not mentioned) Number of slots: (unknown... not mentioned) Laptop or desktop RAM: (unknown... not mentioned)

  • What configuration changes can I make to speed up extremely slow Windows VM's in ESXi 4.0.

    I've recently moved from VMWare Server to ESXi 4.0. Running on Dell T310. My VM's have been restored but they are running dog slow compared to VMWare Server. I loaded ESXi 4.0 using only default values. Where are some areas where I can tweak the performance? Even logging onto the VM's can be extremely sluggish. Trying to install software on any of them is a new experience in pain. Dell PowerEdge T310 Xeon X3460 2.80 GHz 32 GB RAM 1 HD (2 TB) I have 16 VM's on this server, but only six or so will be running during my testing. I keep an eye on the Resource Allocation and Performance tabs for the host and I never see CPU or RAM getting anywhere close to pegged. Events tab does show some notices for video RAM issues and some hints on Windows activation issues, but nothing that would point to the sort of sluggishness that I'm experiencing. 1 Windows Server 2008 R2 (64-bit) - 4 GB RAM 1 Windows 7 (32-bit) - 2 GB RAM 1 Vista (32-bit) - 1 GB RAM 3 XP (32-bit) - 1 GB RAM Over to you!     I read on Wikipedia that Windows 7 on a 64-bit PC needs twice as much RAM as on a 32-bit PC. I understand why is that: every number stored in memory takes 8 bytes rather than just 4. That, in simple terms, means that your amount of RAM is reduced to half when you use Windows 7 on a 64-bit computer. Now, I have a Intel Core 2 Duo Laptop with Windows Vista right now (2 GB of RAM). My question is: Since Core 2 is a 64-bit architecture, if I upgrade to Windows 7 will my laptop be working as if it had just 1 GB of RAM? Or... to say it in other words: Having a 64-bit PC with Windows 7 do you need twice as much RAM as you need on a 32-bit PC to have the same performance? If I am right, then I'd say it's a terrible business to have a 64-bit computer and Windows 7 on it (I hope I am mistaken, though). Follow-up: After some answers, I'm realizing it's not the same thing to have a 32-bit OS on a 64-bit PC than a 64-bit OS on a 64-bit PC. Apparently, the problem of Windows 7 requiring twice as much RAM on 64-bit architectures is when you have both the OS and PC supporting 64 bits. I'd like new answers to address this issue. Also, is it possible to have more that 4 GB of RAM on a 64-bit PC using a 32-bit version of Windows?

  • Hard drive degredation from large memory usage and paging files?

    I've had a question(s) regarding computer degradation going through my head for a while and haven't found many good resources for researching it. 1) First off, when is the virtual RAM/paging file on a hard drive used by Windows? Is it used when the RAM is full? Or does it use the Virtual RAM/paging file as intermediate caching between the RAM and actual hard drive space all the time? 2) If I were to run many applications on my computer at the same time and have a bad habit of doing this for the entire lifetime of the computer, does it use more of the virtual RAM/paging file than if I were to have fewer programs running? Just to note, the RAM never fills up on my computer but it is used heavily. 3) By extension of question 2, if the virtual RAM/paging file is used more heavily, would that result in rapid hard drive degradation? I have seen a pattern among all of the computers that I have owned or used in the past 5 years. I am the kind of person to leave my web browser up with 40 tabs among other programs which will eat up 40% of my memory typically. Over time my computer will slow down, browsers start crashing, programs start seizing up or crashing themselves, eventually the computer becomes essentially unusable. I have been trying to rack my mind to come up with a solution other than to purchase a new PC to have it die on me in the next couple years as well. This is the only thought that has come to mind that might have a simple hardware fix...Windows ReadyBoost...Maybe? I'd like to be able to discuss this so I can learn something about all of the above.
