• Windows 7 laptop fonts DPI is too big breaking certain applications

  I have just installed windows 7 on a laptop and the fonts seem to be doing weird things, Ive adjusted the DPI back to 100% (was 125% by default) however certain applications (old delphi programmed ones) do not look correct still. Here is a screen shot comparing my laptop to my PC running the same software (ROCLink RTU configuration software), the PC looks fine but the laptop does not. Does anyone know where the problem may lie or what I should try next? Thanks

• Big mail issue two ip address

  I have two ip addresses on my server, First IP is assigned to my clients, second is assigned to me. Issue started today. My clients can not send mail via php from their ip address (shared ip address which are all of them using). Server is refusing it with error ERROR: Password not accepted from server: 535 Incorrect authentication data But via their desktop mail clients it can send mail, when they use my ip address for hostname (second ip of server assigned to me) they can send mail. help.

• Is it generally better to compress content on the proxy server or the app server?

  We're using an F5 for load balancing and SSL proxying. Behind it we're serving up java applications with Tomcat instances. These are fairly small applications - hundreds of concurrent users. I'd like to compress some of the content, and I'm looking for advice on choosing to configure compression on the F5, or on the tomcat instances. Any big factors in the decision, or is it 6-of-one half-dozen of the other?

• Troubles uploading big pics to Picassa when pics are on NAS

  Hi all, I'm working from Vista a laptop on a WLAN, my pictures are all on a shared (samba) network drive on a FreeNAS system, which has a wired network connection to the WLAN router (DLink 655). I'v noticed that when i try to upload pics to picassa, and select files from the network share the pics won't upload successfully. If i first copy them locally (on the laptop) and then upload them to picassa, everything works fine. If i try to copy smaller pics (<500kB) it doesnt go wrong Anybody know what is going wrong here?

• Win7 - Some pinned program's icons are corrupt, show default

  I have both FF 3.6 & Chrome pinned to my taskbar in win7. The icons for these two programs show up as the ugly default icon from yesteryear. Strange. Is there some way to force an icon refresh for pinned programs? When I first added them they showed properly, but several days later they reverted to this state Un-pinning the program causes the icon to show up properly, and re-pinning it causes it to break again. These other proggies show up fine: Media Center, Media Player Classic HC, Hulu Desktop, WMP, and the folders. I have 2 user accounts on this box, and both are showing this behavior. I have tried changing the taskbar icon size to 'small' and back, but to no effect. Edit (Add) The icons show up as broken in the start menu too, but I can navigate to the EXE directly. When I click "change icon" in the properties for the start menu entry I get the error : Can not find %ProgramFiles%\Google\Chrome...\chrome.exe.

• undelete big files - mission impossible?

  Hi, I've accidentaly deleted outlook.pst (6.7GB) file, while there was only 400MB free space left on primary NTFS partition (winxp). I've tried several recovery tools to get this file back. "Ontrack Easy Recovery Pro" found 0 pst files (complete scan mode), while "Recover My Files" in sector scan mode found 5 pst's, but 4 of them of sizes from 3 to 28 KB, while the 5th one - 1Gb. I've managed to succesfuly recover 1Gb pst file, which was 1 year old copy (the one used after the latest windows reinstall). Now, I'm frustrated and confused Why 1 year old file was succesfuly recovered if there were only 400MB left on primary partition? Where's 6.7GB file gone? I did some reading (i.e. here), and it seems that there's almost no probability to retrieve the file I'm looking for, but wait - none of recovery tools i've used found zero-sized pst file, moreover - if due to fragmentation a file might be corrupted - we could use scanpst.exe to fix some errors and survive with 10 or 100 emails missing - whatever. Could you please recommend some more sophisticated recovery tools for this particular task? Appretiate your help - thanks in advance

• How can I show ads for search on own web site

  On my web site there is a (self-coded) search functionality that searches through the web site's specific contents. However I'd like to display one banner in addition to the site's results, showing ads relevant to the entered search terms. Can I do this e.g. with Google Ads? I want the ads to be based only on the search terms from the user, not the rest of the site's content, so there has to be a possibility to pass these search terms to the ad provider and get a banner based on these search terms.

• Make Firefox Show Google Results for Default Address Bar Searches

  Have you ever typed something incorrectly into the Firefox address bar, and then had it take you to a page you weren’t expecting? The reason is because Firefox uses Google’s “I’m Feeling Lucky” search, but you can change it. Scratching your head? Let’s take a quick run through what we’re talking about… Normally, if you typed in something like just “howtogeek” in the address bar, and then hit enter… you’ll be taken directly to the How-To Geek site. But how? Very simple! It’s the same place you would have been taken to if you typed “howtogeek” into Google, and then clicked the “I’m Feeling Lucky” button, which takes you to the first result. This is what Firefox does behind the scenes when you put something into the address bar that isn’t a URL. But what if you’d rather head to the search results page instead? Luckily, all you have to do is tweak an about:config parameter in Firefox. Just head into about:config in the address bar, and then filter for keyword.url like so: Double-click on the entry in the list, and then delete the &gfns=1 from the value. That’s the part of the URL that triggers Google to redirect to the first result. And now, the next time you type something into the address bar, either on purpose or because you typo’d it, you’ll be taken to the results page instead: About:Config tweaking is lots of fun. • lightspark in Firefox doesn't show up

  I have installed LightSpark Flash Player alternative from what is called the official PPA: https://launchpad.net/~sparkers/+archive/ppa (I mean, I added this repository and then sudo apt-get install lightspark). But Firefox doesn't feel it. It looks exacly like when I hadn't installed LightSpark. In "Firefox - Addons - Plugins" there is no new entry. What should I do to really use Lightspark after installing it?

• MP4 files show up but won't stream to xbox 360

  I set up a basic media server to stream to my 360 using uShare. Here are the instructions I used: http://linuxexpresso.wordpress.com/2011/01/02/howto-ubuntu-upnp-server-to-xbox-360/. I can stream avi files fine but I cannot stream mp4s. When I go to videos on the xbox, I can see all of the videos and folders but when I click play for an mp4 nothing happens. On my ubuntu desktop I can click on the mp4 file and it plays fine. And if I take that file, stick it on a thumb drive and plug it directly into the xbox the mp4 will play off the thumb drive. I'm lost for why it won't work through ushare. Any ideas?

• PDF files made using inkscape doesnot show everything when opened in windows

  I made a small vector graphic using inkscape, converted it to pdf. Then i opened the pdf in windows for printing purposes. Many of the lines and curves I made in inkscape were missing. Then I tried the same graphics in coreldraw. Converted it to pdf. Then i opened the file in ubuntu. All lines and curves were there. I want to use ubuntu for all my works. But this problem makes it difficult for me as I have to take the pdf to a printer who works only with windows.

  Does anyone know how to visually diagram the ways in which the flow of control in code passes between code produced by different groups and how that affects the amount of code that needs to be carefully written/reviewed/tested for system properties to hold? What I am trying to help people visualize are arguments of the form: For property P to hold, nd developers have to write application code, Ca, without certain kinds of errors, and nm maintainers have to make sure that the code continues to not have these kinds of errors over the project lifetime. We could reduce the error rate by educating nd developers and nm maintainers. For us to be confident that the property holds, ns specialists still need to test or check |Ca| lines of code and continue to test/check the changes by nm maintainers. Alternatively, we could be confident that P holds if all code paths that could violate P went through tool code, Ct, written by our specialists. In our case, test suites alone cannot give confidence that P holdsnd » nsnm ns|Ca| » |Ct| so writing and maintaining Ct is economical, frees up our developers to worry about other things, and reduces the ongoing education commitment by our specialists. or those conditions do not hold, so focusing on education and testing is preferable. Example 1 As a concrete example, suppose we want to ensure that our web-service only produces valid JSON output. Our web-service provides several query and mutation operators that can be composed in interesting ways.   I am having the toughest time sending large attachments, everywhere I have checked my file size limit for send/receive is 100mb but yet users are unable to receive files even at the size of 14mb. I'm using a spam filter (Appriver) and have worked with there support for a very long time, we see the following errors in logs 13:32:40.260 4 SMTP-000036([myserverIP]) rsp: 354 Start mail input; end with <CRLF>.<CRLF> 13:33:41.038 3 SMTP-000033([myserverIP]) write failed. • My card reader doesn't show up at all, but previously did in 10.10

  I bought a pin-based-USB powered internal media card reader and it worked perfectly when I first installed Ubuntu 10.10 a month ago. I used it a few times since and today I booted up the computer and it's not working. Here's how it used to work: In nautilus->computer, 5 "drives" would display even when no card was inserted. One for each slot (SD, XD, CF/MS, etc). Opening one w/o a card would initiate a "Please insert card." dialog. Inserting a card would automatically open nautilus. Now: No drives display at all whether cards are inserted or not. lsusb lists the following (which seems to indicate that it's not being detected) Bus 008 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub Bus 007 Device 002: ID 046d:c52e Logitech, Inc. I tried using ubuntu-bug but for USB devices it expects you to be able to remove and insert them while the computer is running -- obviously something you probably shouldn't be doing when you're dealing with devices plugged straight into the USB pins. • PowerShell – Show a Notification Balloon

  In my presentations for PowerShell I sometimes want to start a process (like a backup) that will take some time. I normally pop up a notification “balloon” at the start, and then do the bulk of the work, and then pop up a balloon at the end to let me know it’s done. You can actually try out this little sample (on a test system, of course) without any other code to see what it does. Then just put the other PowerShell commands in the #Do Some Work part. Oh – throw an icon (.ico file) in a c:\temp directory or point that somewhere else. (No, this probably isn’t original. Can’t remember where I saw the original code, but I’ve modified it a bit anyway, so if you’re the original author and this looks slightly familiar, post a comment.)
