    I am building a flight simulator box, off of Ubuntu 12.10, but I am trying to make the OS essentially invisible, I just want the machine to boot into the Flight Sim, which, that part isn't really that difficult, just a matter of adding a startup item, but I would like to make it a bit more seemless, and in-addtion to that, I would like maybe a 3-5 second countdown where you could opt-out of the flight sim from starting, if you need to troubleshoot the OS, or the flight sim itself, and I have no idea how that would be accomplished

To sum it up: A user already has a v1.0 and receives a v2.0 ad hoc A user has the ad hoc v2.0 and the official public release of v2.0 hits the store A user has the ad hoc v2.0 and an official public release of v3.0 hits the store In other words, is the ad hoc version a stand-alone build or does it in fact update a previous version as expected from an update? And will it be updated as soon as a newer version hits the store?

  • Why avoid pessimistic locking in a version control system?

    Based on a few posts I've read concerning version control, it seems people think pessimistic locking in a version control system is a bad thing. Why? I understand that it prevents one developer from submitting a change while another has the file checked out, but so what? If your code files are so big that you constantly have more than one person working on them at the same time, I submit that you should reorganize your code. Break it up into smaller functional units. Integration of concurrent code changes is a tedious and error-prone process even with the tools a good version control system provides to make it easier. I think it should be avoided if at all possible. So, why is pessimistic locking discouraged?

  • Maven 2: How to package current project version in a WAR file?

    I am using Maven 2 to build my Java project and I am looking for a way to present the current version number of the pom.xml to the user (using a Servlet or JSP for example). As far as I can see, the best way would be that Maven packages the version number as a text file into the WAR. This allows me to read the version from that file and present it the way I want. Does anyone know of a plugin that can do something like that for me? Maybe the WAR plugin can be configured to do so? Or maybe using some other approach all together?

  • Python: Best practice for including a version number in an app?

    I have a PyQt application that reads and writes data files. I am including a 'version number' in each file written. This is a simple number similar to: 1.2 or something (major and minor versions). I am doing this so that I can change the format of these data files in future versions and then still correctly parse them simply by checking to see what the version is inside the file. My question is what is the best practice for keeping this number stored inside the app itself. I.e. do I just hard-code the app version number into the class that is responsible for reading and writing files? Or should I have some sort of object/variable stored at the top-level of the app and somehow access it from the class responsible for reading and writing these files. If the latter, how do I store it and how do I access it? Thanks.

    I'm attempting to join an OS X Mavericks (10.9) client to a Windows Server 2008 Active Directory domain, however the bind fails with this error in the OS X client's system.log: Oct 24 15:03:15 host.domain.com com.apple.preferences.users.remoteservice[5547]: -[ODCAddServerSheetController handleOtherActionError: gotError: Error Domain=com.apple.OpenDirectory Code=5202 "Authentication server encountered an error while attempting the requested operation." UserInfo=0x7f9e6cb3e180 {NSLocalizedDescription=Authentication server encountered an error while attempting the requested operation., NSLocalizedFailureReason=Authentication server encountered an error while attempting the requested operation.}, Authentication server encountered an error while attempting the requested operation. I've joined (bound) Ubuntu Linux clients to the same domain with net ads join in the past with no problems (using the same administrative user). I don't have access to any server logs. Here's the GUI error (from Directory Utility) on the OS X client: Here's the GUI error (from User's and Groups) in System Preferences on the OS X client: Update After some Wiresharking I've got some more info: OS X Client - KDC (over UDP): AS_REQ (no padata) OS X Client <- KDC (over UDP): KRB5KDC_ERR_PREAUTH_REQUIRED OS X Client - KDC (over UDP): AS_REQ (this time with PA-ENC-TIMESTAMP in padata) OS X Client <- KDC (over UDP): KRB5KDC_ERR_RESPONSE_TOO_BIG OS X Client - KDC (over TCP): AS_REQ (also with PA-ENC-TIMESTAMP in padata) OS X Client <- KDC (over TCP): KDC_ERR_ETYPE_NOSUPP ...and that's it. This is what I think is going on: The OS X client sends a kerberos request. The KDC says, "You need to pre-authenticate. Try again" The OS X client tries to pre-authenticate (all this so far is over UDP) Something gets lost on our network and the KDC says, "Oops something went wrong" The OS X client switches to TCP and tries again. Over TCP, the KDC says, "You're using an encryption type I don't support" Note that in its padata records, the OS X client is always using "aes256-cts-hmac-sha1-96" as its encryption type. However, in its KDC_REQ_BODY record it lists the aes256-cts-hmac-sha1-96, aes128-cts-hmac-sha1-96, des3-cbc-sha1, and rc4-hmac encryption types. When the KDC comes back with KDC_ERR_ETYPE_NOSUPP, it uses rc4-hmac as its encryption type in its padata record. I know next to nothing about Kerberos, but it seems to me that the OS X client should go ahead and try the rc4-hmac encryption type. However, it does nothing after this.     When I need to write an implementation version of an interface function, I put the implementation function within a impl namespace, but with the same name as the interface function. Is this a bad practice? (the same name part, the namespace part I am confident it’s more than OK). For me, who I write the code, there is no confusion between the two, but I want to make sure this isn’t confusing for someone else. One other option would be to append impl suffix to the function name, but since it is already in a separate namespace named impl it seems redundant. Is there an idiomatic way to do this? E.g.: namespace n { namespace impl { // implementation function (hidden from users) // same name, is it ok? void foo() { // ... //sometimes it needs to call recursively or to call overloads of the interface version: foo(); // calls the implementation version.     The "initialization error: class file has wrong version" has become a somewhat recurrent error message thrown by JDeveloper 10.1.2.x as newer JDKs have been released in the last years. Note that JDeveloper 10.1.2 was developed to run with JDK 1.4.2. The reasons for this error message to be thrown include: A JDK version higher than 1.4.2 is being used and some unexpected incompatibility conflicts can occur because of that Some of the libraries used on the workspace and/or project were compiled with newer JDK version So, it is strongly recommended to use newer JDeveloper versions (10.1.3 - 11g) for newer JDKs. JDeveloper 10.1.2 will be desupported in December 2010 (or later depending on the support contract).   • No "Choose OS" screen after co-installation of Ubuntu 12.04

    I don't have any technical knowledge of Ubuntu but wanted to install it on a partition. Step-by-step of what i did. used disk management in windows 7 to clear 50gb of space used a usb live ubuntu 12.04 installer in custom install mode used the installer's built in disk manager to set up 2gb swap space and 48gb ext4 space ran installation, with option to copy over documents and settings from windows 7 restarted after completion. After this, my computer automatically loads ubuntu 12 and skips the option to load windows 7. i know the files are still there, as i can see them in the file manager. When trying to fix with the win7 installer dvd it tries to repair the OS in drive [D:] i.e. it recognises the disc itself as the OS and ignores the [c:] files. I think, after browsing around here, similar problems suggest this is a problem with the boot loader, but if the win7 dvd won't work, then i don't have any way to fix this. does anyone know of a way to force the computer to show a "choose OS" screen?

    Our project uses a user-specific configuration file. This file is currently not in version control, since it is different for each user. The problem is, whenever a developer adds a new module that requires configuration, or changes the name of an existing modules, the other developers get errors because their private configuration files are not updated. To solve the problem, we thought of working with two configuration files: a default/global configuration file that will be in version control and will be updated regularly by each developer that adds a new module, and a private configuration file that will be kept out of version control and will contain only the user-specific changes. However, this still seems like an ad-hoc solution. Can you propose a better solution? What do the professionals do?
