• Minty Bug: Build an FM Bug Inside a Mint Container

  Electronics projects that have real world (and showing off to your friends) potential are the most fun; today we take a look at a clever FM bug design hidden in a mint container. At PyroElectro Projects they wanted to try something new with the whole electronics-in-mint-container genre. They opted to turn a container of Ice Breakers Frost mints (the Ice Breakers response to Altoid Mints, presumably) into a small FM bug. The most clever part of the design is that the container still holds mints. Aside from a small black dot on the back of the case you’d have little reason to believe it was anything buy a box of mints. • Cannot configure NAP DCOM security.

  I've just added a new 2K8 domain controller to an existing domain as part of a transition from 2k3. I am getting a lot of DCOM 10016 errors, indicating launch security permission problems on a specific CLSID, which ends up being the NAP Agent Service. I've dealt with this before by granting the Network Service local launch and local activation permissions, but the secuirty options are all disabled for this component in the Component Services snap-in. The NAP agent service is not running, and startup is set to Manual. Any ideas on how to remove the errors for the unrequried NAP agent?

• Cannot apply unity --reset after modifying files

  So I have an idea of what I did wrong, I am just not sure how to fix it. I used the Unity Glass mod: http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2012/07/unity-glass-offers-refined-new-look-for-the-unity-launcher After removing it, I cannot reset unity and it does not work. • Connectivity good between VMs, but no connectivity between host and VM

  I have a strange situation where connectivity (ie ping, access shared folders and services) is fine between virtual machines, but not between the host and the virtuals. I've been using Hyper-V almost every day for years and have never had a problem like this. Note the following: The host machine and all virtuals are running Windows Server 2008 r1. All machines can connect to the web, and the gateway router. Subnet mask and gateway reported in ipconfig are identical for all machines. I can access virtuals via the Hyper-V snap-in only. Doea anyone have suggestions about what might be wrong, or what diagnostic steps I can take?

• problem installing mysql on ubuntu server 10.10 machine

  Hi, I tried installing mysql a couple of times and I'm having problems. First of all, when I install it gives me a message that it's setting up and it just hangs. I can't ctl + c out of it, so I reboot the server and try to log into the db with sudo mysql -u root -p I enter my password and then get ERROR 2002 (HY000): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (2) I restart the server: sudo /etc/init.d/mysql start Rather than invoking init scripts through /etc/init.d, use the service(8) utility, e.g. service mysql start Since the script you are attempting to invoke has been converted to an Upstart job, you may also use the start(8) utility, e.g. start mysql ~$ I try this: aptitude search mysql | grep ^i i A libdbd-mysql-perl - Perl5 database interface to the MySQL data i libmysql-java - Java database (JDBC) driver for MySQL i A libmysqlclient16 - MySQL database client library i mysql-client-5.1 - MySQL database client binaries i A mysql-client-core-5.1 - MySQL database core client binaries i mysql-common - MySQL database common files, e.g. /etc/mys i mysql-embedded - MySQL - embedded library i mysql-server-core-5.1 - MySQL database server binaries When I navigate to the folder to see if the *.sock file exists: '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' it does not. • Install Windows Server 2008 Core on a Dell Optiplex 790

  Does anybody have experience installing Windows Server 2008 Core on a Dell Optiplex 790? When I connect to the machine with the Hyper-V Manager Administrator snap-in, and try to create and run a virtual machine, I get the error "The Virtual Machine could not be started because the hypervisor is not running". I've disabled the Execute Disable functionality in the BIOS as was requried for other Dell models, but no matter what combination of security and virtualization settings I use on the machine, I can't get this working. EDIT: I've installed Windows Server 2008 Core on a Dell Optiplex 790, and I'm trying to install and setup a guest VM on the Hypervisor EDIT 2: The Hyper-V role is installed and configured, without any errors in the event log. Hardware-assisted virtualization is also enabled.

• How to remove package from apt-get autoremove "queue"

  I just installed Calibre for ebook management via apt-get on Ubuntu 10.04, however I found out that it's one major version behind the current release, so I decided to reinstall it directly from sources. When I uninstalled the packaged version, apt added bunch of dependencies to the autoremove queue, and as I installed newer version of Calibre from sources, it has no knowledge of it being dependent on those packages. Now I basically have all libraries that I want, but they are still in the autoremove queue. The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required: libqt4-script libqt4-designer libqt4-dbus python-lxml python-cherrypy3 python-encutils libqt4-xmlpatterns libqt4-help python-qt4 python-clientform python-sip python-django python-mechanize libqt4-svg python-django-tagging libphonon4 libqt4-xml libqt4-assistant libqt4-webkit libqt4-scripttools python-beautifulsoup python-pypdf python-dateutil python-cssutils Use 'apt-get autoremove' to remove them. How do I tell apt that I want to keep these packages installed, without reinstalling them manually?

• OCS 2007 Access Edge Server Certificate issue

  We are currently building additional OCS 2007 R2 Access Edge Servers to handle additional capacity.  We ran into a SSL certificate issue when we were setting up the servers. Before running the steps to Deploy an Edge Server, we successfully imported our SSL certificate that we use for external access on all of the new servers.  After successfully completing the first three Deploy Edge Server steps one one of the new servers, we started working on Step 4: Configure Certificates for the Edge Server.  After selecting Assign an existing certificate from the common tasks list and clicking Next to select a certificate, there were no certificates listed as shown below.   The first thing we did was to use the Certificates mmc snap-in to review the SSL certificate information.  We noticed in the General tab that Windows does not have enough information to verify this certificate and in the Certification Path that the issuer of this certificate could not be found for the SSL certificate that we imported successfully earlier.     While troubleshooting, we learned that we could not access the URL for the certificate’s CRL to download the CRL file due to restrictive firewall rules between the new OCS 2007 R2 Access Edge Servers and the Internet. After modifying the firewall rules, we were able to download the CRL file and when we reran Step 4 to assign an existing certificate, the certificate was listed.

• Permission denied accessing windows firewall

  It doesn't matter who I am logged in as I am getting the following error in the mmc console when I launch the firewall advanced settings There was an error opening the Windows Firewall with Advanced Security snap in You do not have the correct permissions to open the Windows Firewall with Advanced Security console, You must be a member of the Administrators group or the Network Operators group to perform this task. For more information, contact your system administrator. Error code: 0x5. Ive tried processmonitor to identify what permission is being denied but no luck. If I run netsh directly I get access denied as well. This is running windows server 2008 SP2. And yes I was running as an administrator. Any ideas?

• What changes can be made to a Microsoft Account using net user on Windows 8?

  In Windows 8, you can log on with a local account or with a Microsoft Account. Both types show up in the Users control panel, but there are different options that you can change for each type. An administrator can change basically any aspect of a local user - name, password, access level, etc. For a Microsoft Account, you can only change the access level (admin/standard) or remove the account. From the command line though, there don't appear to be any restrictions on what you can do a Microsoft Account. Using the net user tool or the Local Users and Groups MMC snap-in, it looks like an administrator would be able to change the password, display name, profile path, etc. of Microsoft Accounts (as well as local accounts of course). Will these commands actually work when applied to a Microsoft Account? Will using them in some way break the link to the Microsoft Account, or will nothing happen at all? I'm hesitant to test since I don't want to mess up my account permanently.

• Bug in CDP implementation

  We are developing a Linux based ethernet switch which has 6 ports. We are done with CDP protocol. I have connected a Cisco device to port 2. When I quiery for the Cisco device, I get the reply and instead of getting lan1 (port 1 - lan0 .. port 6 = lan5), I always get the interface name as eth0. The same is the case for all the ports. What changes are required to get the correct interface name? I will be very thankful for the information. • Unable to set my own icon for launcher item in 12.04

  I use the Faenza icon collection in Ubuntu 12.04 Unity with no issues. • Can't connect disk management to remote XP PC from local Win7/Server 2008

  Scenario as follows: support technicians using Windows 7 PC's or Server 2008 terminal server are unable to connect Disk Management MMC snap in to a remote PC when the remote device is running Windows XP. "Disk management could not start Virtual Disk Service (VDS) on ". This can happen if the remote computer does not support VDS, or if a connection cannot be established because it was blocked by Windows Firewall." Connecting from another XP machine or 2003 server to the same XP machines works fine. Even connecting from XP/2003 to the Win7 or 2008 server works fine. Windows firewall disabled on all devices. I'm guessing this is something to do with the fact that XP uses logical disk manager service whereas Win7/2008 use Virtual disk manager service. But there doesn't seem to be any way to use logical disk manager service from 7/2008 to connect to XP...

• How to open existing VMs in VirtualBox?

  VirtualBox seems to lack the obvious "File - Open" menu option. Frustrating! More details... I recently got a new workstation and I moved my VirtualBox and VMWare Player VMs from the old PC to the new. The VMWare Player VMs are a snap... you go to "File - Open a Virtual Machine...", find the .vmx files from the old PC, and voila! It's up and running. All the required files apparently are in the same folder. With VirtualBox there just doesn't seem to be a way to do that. Looks like VMs are tied to the original host in some magical/invisible way like registry entries, etc.

• Is it me or is developing web based data entry GUIs a big pain?

  Maybe it's me or maybe it isn't. I don't have a huge amount of experience of developing web based data entry software but do have some. I used to do it quite a bit years ago. Used to use Oracle Forms, Visual Studio, various 4th generation languages, and performing the user interface layout used to be a snap. Now doing the user interface for developing web applications seems to be a huge pain in the rear. Just trying to get text entry fields and widgets to go where they are supposed to go on the screen is a total pain. You have to know Javascript, CSS, JQuery, HTML, etc. There must be an easier way to develop data entry forms that produce the needed underlying code for a web page. Maybe I'm just not looking in the right place. There must be some WYSIWYG GUI development tools for the web for developing data entry forms out there. Anybody know of any?

• "Snapping" when in RDP

  I am using mstsc.exe version 6.0 (Remote Desktop non-Metro version) from an XP machine and cannot get Windows 8 snapping to work. I can drag a metro app window to the left or right, but it doesn't stick, it just bounces back to full screen. The snap bars do not appear. The client PC has two monitors, each with a resolution of 1280x1024. While mstsc.exe 6.0 does have an option to use both monitors simultaneously in normal settings, I am launching it with spanning enabled: mstsc.exe /span So the effective resolution in the session is 2560x1024. Is there a trick to getting this to work over RDP?
