• When NOT to use a framework

  Today, one can find a framework for just about any language, to suit just about any project. Most modern frameworks are fairly robust (generally speaking), with hour upon hour of testing, peer reviewed code, and great extensibility. However, I think there is a downside to ANY framework in that programmers, as a community, may become so reliant upon their chosen frameworks that they no longer understand the underlying workings, or in the case of newer programmers, never learn the underlying workings to begin with. It is easy to become specialized to a degree that you are no longer a 'PHP programmer' (for example), but a "Drupal programmer", to the exclusion of anything else. Who cares, right? We have the framework! We don't need to know how to "do it by hand"! Right? The result of this loss of basic skills (sometimes to the extent that programmers who don't use frameworks are viewed as "outdated") is that it becomes common practice to use a framework where it is not required or appropriate. The features the framework facilitates wind up confused with what the base language is capable of. Developers start using frameworks to accomplish even the most basic of tasks, so that what once was considered a rudimentary process now involves large libraries with their own quirks, bugs, and dependencies. What was once accomplished in 20 lines is now accomplished by including a 20,000 line framework AND writing 20 lines to use the framework. Conversely, one does not want to reinvent the wheel. If I'm writing code to accomplish some basic, common little task, I might feel like I am wasting my time when I know that framework XYZ offers all the features I am after, and a whole lot more. The "whole lot more" part still has me worried, but it doesn't seem that many even consider it anymore. There has to be a good metric to determine when it is appropriate to use a framework. What do you consider the threshold to be, how do you decide when to use a framework, or, when not.

• Use decorator and factory together to extend objects?

  I'm new to OOP and design pattern. I've a simple app that handles the generation of Tables, Columns (that belong to Table), Rows (that belong to Column) and Values (that belong to Rows). Each of these object can have a collection of Property, which is in turn defined as an enum. They are all interfaces: I used factories to get concrete instances of these products, depending on circumnstances. Now I'm facing the problem of extending these classes. Let's say I need another product called "SpecialTable" which in turn has some special properties or new methods like 'getSomethingSpecial' or an extended set of Property. The only way is to extend/specialize all my elements (ie. build a SpecialTableFactory, a SpecialTable interface and a SpecialTableImpl concrete)? What to do if, let's say, I plan to use standard methods like addRow(Column column, String name) that doesn't need to be specialized? I don't like the idea to inherit factories and interfaces, but since SpecialTable has more methods than Table i guess it cannot share the same factory. Am I wrong? Another question: if I need to define product properties at run time (a Table that is upgraded to SpecialTable at runtime), i guess i should use a decorator. Is it possible (and how) to combine both factory and decorator design? Is it better to use a State or Strategy pattern, instead?

I was looking to get some information on Apple iPhone4 Video, Image Codec and Processing Chips/SoC parts. 1] Does anyone know, Which vendor provides the SoC's to enable this image / video compression and processing solutions in iPhone4. 2] Are the video/image codec solutions - 'Software codecs' on a specialized dsp-core/processor or hard wired as in a FPGA/ASIC solution. • How can I print legible text in a font size <1.5?

  For biological research, I need to print characters so tiny that 2 of them fit in less than 0.5 mm, which I will read under a microscope. I am currently printing from Excel at font size of 1.5, using a HP LaserJet 400M. The result is slightly larger than what I need it to be, but printing at size 1 produces unreadable results. How can I print a smaller font size but still get readable results? Are there specialized printers for that? Where could I find one?

It seems like demand for CICS, Tuxedo has fallen from 2.5%/1% respectively to almost zero. To me, it seems bizarre: now we have more networked and internet enabled machines than ever before. And most of them are talking to some kind of database. So it would seem that use of products whose developers spent last 20-30 years working on distributing and coordinating and optimizing transactions should be on the rise. And it appears they're not. I can see a few causes but can't tell whether they are true: we forgot that concurrency and distribution are really hard, and redoing it all by ourselves, in Java, badly. Erlang killed them all. Projects nowadays have changed character, like most business software has already been built and we're all doing internet services, using stuff like Node.js, Erlang, Haskell. (I've used RabbitMQ which is written in Erlang, "but it was small specialized side project" kind of thing). BigData is the emphasis now and BigData doesn't need transactions very much (?). None of those explanations seem particularly convincing to me, which is why I'm looking for better one. Anyone?

• Is there a chroot build script somewhere?

  I am about to develop a little script to gather information for a chroot-jail. In my case this looks (at the first glance) pretty simple: The application has a clean rpm-install and did install almost all files into a sub-directory of /opt. My idea is: Do a find of all binaries Check their library-dependencies Record the results into a list Do a rsync of that list into the chroot-target-directory before startup of the application Now I wonder - ist there any script around that already does such a job (perl/bash/python)? So far I found only specialized solutions for single applications (like sftp-chroot). Update I see three close-votes for the reason "off topic". This is a question that arose because I have to install that ancient piece of software on a server at work. So if you still feel this is off-topic - leave a comment...

Security Analysts >> CISOs >> CIOs - the focus is coming from the risk and security office - so what does that mean for the IT teams? 2. How important is mobile policy? 77% said "Critical" or "Extremely Important" - so this means mobile access policies will get a lot of attention.  3. When asked about the state of their mobile policies: Over 35% said they didn't have a mobile access policy and another 35% said they simply ask their employees to sign a usage agreement.  So basically ~70% of the respondents were not actively managing or monitoring mobile access. • Will buy simple Cocos2D bubbles iPad game for private use (source)

  Hi, First of all, sorry if this is the wrong place for posting this kind of request. IDK if is there already a marketplace on the stack community. I'm a fairly experienced iPhone/iPad developer with several Apps already published. I have a deep understanding of Objective-C and the Cocoa framework, as well as with the iPhone development tools. However, I have never used Cocos2d (or any other gaming engine for that matter) as I've mostly specialized in utilities/productivity Apps. I am in the urgent need of developing a really simple iPad game (for which I will provide all of the media assets - graphics and sounds) that needs to be deployed in about a week from now. Basically the game should allow the user to pop bubbles of different size and speed as they move from the bottom to the top of the screen. While I could take the time to read the documentation and start working on this game myself, I'm currently with a couple of other projects that I need to finish soon, so I would like to ask for the help of some other more experienced Cocos2D developer which could develop this game on its basic form for me. If you think you can help, please send me your quote, timing and, if possible, samples of previous work done with Cocos2D that would be similar to what I need. I can provide more detail upon request. • DataGraph alternatives for Windows systems

  Recently, on a friend's mac I came across a wonderful application for plotting in numerous ways numeric data - DataGraph. I've always done this sort of thing with Excel, and with newer versions, to me (this is emphasized "to me", so this doesn't get taken as an Excel rant post), it's becoming troublesome. Are there applications like this (specialized for one thing they do good and relatively simple ... I'm not interested in CFD visualization packages in here.) for Windows ? All suggestions welcomed.

• WIFI connection interfering with Windows Server 2003 Active Directory domain. (How to debug?)

  RELATED: This question has led me to ask this one. I had to change our unnamed crappy ADSL router to a crappy Comtrend CT-5361 WiFi router, now every WiFi connection to the domain doesn't work correctly: Joining the domain is impossible (see related question) Logging into the domain takes ages Authentication usually fails Question: How to debug this and pinpoint the exact problem? I have no enough knowledge on either WiFi networks or on Active Directory to know which connections are made at which stages nor how to check what's happening at the wireless level to compare what should happen to what is happening. I'm looking for resources to learn what should be happening and tools to detect what is actually happening (I expect a sniffer should be enough, but if there are better, more specialized tools, that'd be great).

• Hardware advice for bitmap / openGL image processing server?

  I am trying to work out a build for a processing server to handle bitmap processing as well as openGL rendering for chroma-keying images and Photoshop automation. My searches here and on Google have turned up surprisingly few results, and seeing that there aren't tags for bitmap or image processing I take it this is a specialized application. The bitmap processing is very cpu-intensive while the chroma-keying and Photoshop stuff is gpu-intensive. I doubt this is a case of over-optimization as our company batches thousands of images a day (currently on individual workstations) and any saving in processing time and workstation down-time would be beneficial. Does anyone have any experience with this type of processing server? Any special considerations that would go into a build like this or am I over-thinking it?

• How should a non-IT manager secure the long-term maintenance and development of essential legacy software?

  I've been hunting for a place to ask this question for quite a while; maybe this is the place, although I'm afraid it's not the kind of "question with an answer" this site would prefer. We are a small, very specialized, benefits administration firm with an extremely useful, robust collection of software, some written in COBOL but most in BASIC. Two full-time consultants have ably maintained and improved this system over more than 30 years. Needless to say they will soon retire. (One of them has been desperate to retire for several years but is loyal to a fault and so hangs on despite her husband's insistence that golf should take priority.) We started down the path of converting to a system developed by one of only three firms in the country that offer the type of software we use. We now feel that although this this firm is theoretically capable of completing the conversion process, they don't have the resources to do so timely, and we have come to believe that they will be unable to offer the kind of service we need to run our business. (There's nothing like being able to set one's own priorities and having the authority to allocate one's resources as one sees fit.) Hardware is not a problem--we are able to emulate very effectively on modern servers. If COBOL and BASIC were modern languages, we'd be willing to take the risk that we could find replacements for our current consultants going forward. It seems like there ought to be a business model for an IT support firm that concentrates on legacy platforms like this and provides the programming and software development talent to support a system like ours, removing from our backs the risks of finding the right programming talent and the job of convincing younger programmers that they can have a productive, rewarding career, in part in an old, non-sexy language like BASIC. Where do I find such firms?

• C++: Declaration of template class member specialization

  When I specialize a (static) member function/constant in a template class, I'm confused as to where the declaration is meant to go. Here's an example of what I what to do - yoinked directly from IBM's reference on template specialization: ===IBM Member Specialization Example=== template<class T> class X { public: static T v; static void f(T); }; template<class T> T X<T>::v = 0; template<class T> void X<T>::f(T arg) { v = arg; } template<> char* X<char*>::v = "Hello"; template<> void X<float>::f(float arg) { v = arg * 2; } int main() { X<char*> a, b; X<float> c; c.f(10); // X<float>::v now set to 20 } The question is, how do I divide this into header/cpp files? The generic implementation is obviously in the header, but what about the specialization? It can't go in the header file, because it's concrete, leading to multiple definition. But if it goes into the .cpp file, is code which calls X::f() aware of the specialization, or might it rely on the generic X::f()? So far I've got the specialization in the .cpp only, with no declaration in the header. I'm not having trouble compiling or even running my code (on gcc, don't remember the version at the moment), and it behaves as expected - recognizing the specialization. But A) I'm not sure this is correct, and I'd like to know what is, and B) my Doxygen documentation comes out wonky and very misleading (more on that in a moment a later question). • Optimizations employed by ORM's

  I'm teaching JEE, especially JPA, Spring and Spring MVC. As I have not so much experience in large projects, it is difficult to know what to present to students about optimisation of ORM. At the present time, I present some classic optimisation tricks: prepared statements (most of ORM implicitely uses it by default) first and second-level caches "write first, optimize later" it is possible to switch off ORM and send SQL commands directly to the database for very frequent, specialized and costly requests Is there any other point the community see about other way to optimize ORM ? I'm especially interested by DAO patterns...

• Arguments of using WCF/OData as access layer instead of EF/L2S/nHibernate directly

  We develop mostly low traffic but highly specialized web applications. Normally we use L2S, EF or nHibernate as access layer and then throws Asp.Net MVC to it and in which for normal crud operations we query the ISession/DataContext directly but for more advanced functions/side effects we put it in a some kind of service layer. Now, i was think about publishing the data through OData (WCF Data Service) and query that from the controllers (or even from jQuery when the a good template engine shows up) and publish the service operations through a WCF service (or as custom methods on the WCF Data Service?). What advantages/disadvantages does this architecture poses? Do I gain something except higher complexity and latency? Better separations of concerns (or is it just a illusion)?

• Good projects to learn OCaml and F#

  After learning the basic syntax, reading some non-trivial code is a fast way to learn a language. We can also learn how to design a library/software during reading others' code. I have following lists. A Chess program in OCaml by Tomek Czajka. Hal Daumé has written several machine learning libraries in Ocaml. Including decision trees, logistic regression and SVM. All of them are near-production-quality code. A Chess Game Analysis program in F# in Microsoft Research. The above three are my favorites. Will you suggest some other sources? General purpose open source software are good, specialized open source like the three I list here are even more welcome.

• Can I disable DataAnnotations validation on DefaultModelBinder?

  I want DefaultModelBinder not to perform any validation based on DataAnnotations metadata. I'm already using DataAnnotations with DynamicData for the admin area of my site, and I need a different set of validation rules for the MVC based front-end. I'm decorating my classes with the MetadataType attribute. If I could have different MetadataType classes for the same model but used on different scenarios that would be great. If not I'm fine with just disabling the validation on the DefaultModelBinder, either by setting some property or by creating a specialized version of it.

• Discussions on software architecture - Is StackOverflow appropriate place?

  Hi guys, I am using StackOverFlow for sometime, and its absolutely absolutely awesome for discussions on coding issues. But I don't see discussions on software architecture and designs. What I mean is, I don't see discussions where people put their design ideas and architecture of their software for discussions and ask for reviews and comments. So my question is, is StackOverFlow not the place for such discussions and is there any other place specialized for such discussions. (Like http://serverfault.com for system administrators or http://superuser.com). I am asking this question because, I am a beginner and am coding a piece of software for a course project and am too enthusiastic about it (and passionate too) and want to release it as OpenSource. And I want the code to be highly modular and highly extensible. But as a beginner I am not sure if the design I have comeup is good or not. So want to discuss it with people. • Spatial index for geo coordinates?

  What kind of data structure could be used for an efficient nearest neighbor search in a large set of geo coordinates? With "regular" spatial index structures like R-Trees that assume planar coordinates, I see two problems (Are there others I have overlooked?): Wraparound at the poles and the International Date Line Distortion of distances near the poles How can these factors be allowed for? I guess the second one could compensated by transforming the coordinates. Can an R-Tree be modified to take wraparound into account? Or are there specialized geo-spatial index structures?
