• Hardware needed to route between two networks over wireless

  I recently rented an apartment about 100 yards from my brother's house. I have line of sight to his house and can pick up his home AP signal with one of my two laptops if I go out on my balcony (facing his house) or put the laptop by the window. The other laptop will sometimes see the SSID broadcast, but fails to connect, drops, etc. We would like to set up a persistent wireless connection between our homes. We would prefer each network be logically segmented as independent networks, but he will share his internet connection. I've got a bunch of tv shows saved to a NAS by my TiVO that I'd like to make available to him across the wireless link. My brother strongly prefers to not mess with his WAP at all. His network is running fine and is afraid to mess it up. I guess you could say he is "technologically declined". If we can get a reliable 11Mbps connection we will be satisfied. What hardware do I need to make this work? I was thinking a router with two wireless interfaces (external antennas) a wired interface, and a directional antenna mounted on my balcony facing his house. Can anyone recommend hardware to make this happen? Cheaper is better. I'll only be living in the area a year or two. I do have an old satellite TV antenna if that can be used to direct the signal.

• How can I uninstall Broadcom Bluetooth software that won't disappear in Windows XP?

  My situation is similar to this question for Windows 7, except my OS is Windows XP SP3. I have recently realized I made the mistake of buying a Bluetooth adapter and installing the Broadcom/Widcomm Bluetooth stack driver software. Now that I know that the software is no good, I want to uninstall it. Then I'll install the Toshiba stack for the Cirago adapter. Right now, when I double-click on the setup.exe file that came with the Cirago driver, nothing happens (it doesn't start setup). I've attempted to uninstall all Bluetooth driver software in Device Manager, and I don't see any remnants of any Bluetooth drivers there. But I do see that the little Bluetooth icon still persists: I don't see anything about Bluetooth, Broadcom, or Widcomm in Add/Remove Programs. I don't see any folder names Broadcom or Widcomm in Program Files folder, either. But I do see that Broadcom does show up in the registry with respect to Bluetooth, as shown here. I also renamed every file in C:\Windows\inf that starts with "bth" so that it ends with ".old". What should I do now to completely wipe this persistent Broadcom Bluetooth software off my computer?

• How come my Intel 520 180GB SSD performs extremely poorly?

  I recently installed a new Intel 520 series 180GB SSD in my brand new MacBook Pro. The system is as follows: Model: MacBook Pro 15-inch, Late 2011 (MacBookPro8,2) Processor: 2.4 GHz Intel Core i7 Memory: 16 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 Graphics: AMD Radeon HD 6770M 1024 MB Software: Mac OS X Lion 10.7.3 Main Drive Bay: Intel 520-series 180GB SATA-3 (6GB/s negotiated link) SSD (Firmware: 400i) [80GB free] Optical Bay: Toshiba 5400 RPM 750GB SATA-2 HDD Trim: Enabled (according to Trim Enabler App) And here are the speeds I'm getting: Read: 412 MB/s Write: 186 MB/s What have I done wrong? Results expected: Read/write both 500MB/s I have seen benchmarks with lesser SSD:s (SATA-2 even) outperform my write-speeds by far. Also, Intel 520 SSD:s are supposed to be the top class of SSD:s. Trim Enabler report: This looks a bit odd compared to screenshots from their site: These is the defined S.M.A.R.T attributes (taken from Intel): And here are my S.M.A.R.T attributes read using smartctl tool from smartmontools: They don't seem very compatible. I'm going to try and look for a S.M.A.R.T attributes reader tool for OS X which might support Intel 520 series.

• Stop the constant random reboots of my GIGABYTE GA-B75M-D3V

  I've got some issues with a new system. It's rebooting constantly. The system consists of a: brand new: Gigabyte GA-B75M-D3V with F9 BIOS (latest) Intel Core i5-3470 Ivy Bridge 2x 8GB G.SKILL Ripjaws 1600MHz memory (mem-tested x-86) coming from a stable system: Creative Soundcard X-FI Titanium Asus Radeon HD4850 OCZ Vertex 3 120G SSD Sata 3 Hard disk 1TB Sata 2 ASUS Blu-ray Drive PSU 400w Connected peripherals : Toshiba tv (displayport on dvi of MB or HD4850) Wired mouse, wireless keyboard (logitech) Bluetooth usb key Azio main problem : it's not possible to read the errors from the MB. nothing on the manual neither on internet. At the beginning, I received a MB with graphic problems and the problem of rebooting. I RMA'd it. The new one doesn't have any graphic problems. but it's still constantly rebooting. I removed everything except the HD, the sound-card, the blu-ray drive and the wireless keyboard. It's still unexpectdly rebooting. I'm running a test with just the motherboard and the HD. I will update this text after the test. I've got some questions : Somebody have an idea of a test? The PSU could cause that problem? I used it a lot of years with the stable system. Update 1: BTW, if anyone has the same problem, the manual won't say it but you'll need to reset the bios between two tests (the screwdriver on the two pins) if you suspect a problem of compatibility .

• Asus K55VM usb 3.0 issue

  Good day superusers! I own the above laptop and I found out that there are some unknown and unusual issues with usb 3.0 ports. I haven't noticed anything strange until now. I got a new toshiba usb 3.0 external hdd and when I try to copy larger amount of data from my disk to the external hdd, the OS(windows 7) randomly starts ignoring the external hdd. It doesn't shut it down, it kinda just stops responding but the light on the hdd is still lit. I get an error that the files cannot be copied. I have reinstalled windows 7, installed all drivers(including intel chipset drivers of course) and the issue is still present. It acts normal when copying small amount of data. Also, I heard that some intel chipsets have an issue with usb, something about the connectors not transferring power when the usb device enters some kind of "low power mode" causing the device to stop responding and you need to plug it out and in again. But the thing is, my Intel® Chief River Chipset HM76 is not on the list of affected hardware(not ENTIRELY sure though). If anyone has any idea of what the problem to this might be, I'd be greatful. Edit: The hdd works perfectly fine even for large amounts of data if plugged in the usb 2.0 port!

• RTL8192SU + RTL8191E Linux Issue Installing Driver

  OK I've read tons of fourms of people getting the onboard RTL8191E working and the RTL8192SU working dif is U = USB they are both N and i have both Toshiba L500D-00T pre-installed Win Vistax64-HP and i have obtained the free Win7x64-HP upgrade the onboard wificard sucks and can't hold a stable connection for more then 20minutes in windows but the usb is amazing. Now problem is i tried both Ubuntu and Mandriva with no resolve the issue is the onboard drive detects and actually SHOWS that it's there but no wireless networks detect so it's saying no SSID's are broadcasting which i know is a lie since I'm running a 2wire bell dsl modem with built in wifi and a Linksys wrt54g w/ DD-WRT firmware and both are broadcasting fine. Why don't i use the USB? new in Mandriva Linux Control Center 2010.0 it shows up in Other/Unknown as RTL8191S WLAN Adapter and on the right pane this shows up Identification Vendor: ?Manufacturer Realtek Description: ?RTL8191S WLAN Adapter Media class: ? • IIS replication - Is it possible

  Hi All, I have a requirement for a client that I have a centralised system that all his satellite branches can work on. Currently this is a ASP.net web forms app running under IIS 7 on win 2008 RC 2 using an SQL backend. The client has now requested that each branch have a local server, so that in the event that the internet connection is down, the branches productivity does not suffer. His other request is that everything can be updated via the central hub and using some mechanism the updates filter down to the individual sites. What are my options here? I see the following as possible options: Multiple redundant internet connections controlled by load balancers SQL replication for the DB (What is better, snapshot, merge or transactional) Roll my own IIS sync service the periodically checks if there is a new version of the web app and downloads it (I hope there are better option than this) Something way better I don’t yet know about (I hope this is the one I need) One of my clients concerns are that the branches are often in very remote areas where everything from technicians to internet is hard to find and very scarce. • How to configure a Linux kernel based on the modules currently in use?

  Hello, I'm willing to build a minimal kernel with only the needed things for my machine; so I started by compiling the kernel from the ground up, using the default configuration and adding things that I know for sure I have (i.e.: Ethernet card, WiFi card, ...). But there are several other things not so easy to know about (i.e.: the watchdog timer) so I came across AutoKernConf which supposedly detects the hardware of the machine and generates a kernel configuration file with the settings for the found devices. The problem is it contained several settings repeated and even some which I don't have (I'm using a Dell laptop and one of the things it "found" was something of a Toshiba one). So I ended up building a kernel with the configuration that came out of the make allmodconfig command, which is a kernel with most of the things compiled as modules. Booting into that kernel and running lsmod I can see all of the kernel modules in use (the ones really needed) and I would like to know if there is a tool or some way for me to parse that list and convert it to the corresponding kernel configuration file. Or how to map each one with the appropriate options in the kernel so that I can manually set them. Thank you very much for your time.

• Is 2 GB of RAM better than 2.5 GB?

  My laptop has two slots for RAM, and currently has two 512 MB chips, for 1 GB. Windows XP is running terribly slow on it, so I want to upgrade the RAM. I could buy two 1 GB chips to replace both of the current 512 MB chips, to give me 2 GB of RAM. Or, the price is the same to buy one 2 GB chip, to replace just one of the 512 MB chips, and give me 2.5 GB total. The RAM it takes is PC2-4200 533MHz DDR2. What do you think would be better: buying two 1 GB chips so it can take advantage of dual-channel operation, or buying one 2 GB chip to end up with more total RAM but not dual-channel operation? Like I said, price is the same, so performance is the only consideration. I'm not doing anything especially intensive like video or photo editing -- just having multiple Office programs open, playing music, browsers, etc., but currently even opening the first application takes forever. If it matters, the laptop is a Toshiba Qosmio G25-AV513 running Windows XP Media Center SP3. Thanks! Kevin

• No sound out of headphone port on laptop

  I cannot get sound out of the headphone port on a laptop. Headphones are plugged in, and sound comes out of the internal speakers. Windows behaves normally (sound switches to headphones when headphones are inserted). It did work in Linux at one point, but something changed, we're just not sure what. Rebooting doesn't fix. This appears to occur whether or not PulseAudio is running. Things I've tried: Rebooting. No effect. Booting into Windows. It works properly, so probably not a hardware issue. All of alsamixer. My only controls are this: "Master" Volume bar & mutable, unmuted. Controls volume. "PCM" Volume bar only. 100%. "S/PDIF" Mutable only, currently muted, has no effect. "S/PDIF" Default PCM", Mutable only, currently unmuted, has no effect. Killing PulseAudio. No effect. (It also won't stay dead! Something appears to be restarting it, and I can't tell what, but it is annoying as fuck.) alsactl init 0, no effect. sudo rm -f /var/lib/alsa/asound.state, no effect. General system info: Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Toshiba Satellite T135D-S1324 lspci says I have: 00:14.2 Audio device: ATI Technologies Inc SBx00 Azalia (Intel HDA) 01:05.1 Audio device: ATI Technologies Inc RS780 Azalia controller Some edits: Yes, the headphones are in all the way. This works in Windows: You plug headphones in, the internal speakers stop making noise, and noise comes out the head phones. Windows says I only have two sound cards: the HDMI port (which I don't care about) and the "sound card", which it claims is a "Conexant Pebble High Definition SmartAudio" In Windows, both the internal speakers and the headphone jack show up as one soundcard, which in my experience, is typical. (This is a laptop)

• Windows recovery partition with GRUB2

  So I recently got a new Toshiba laptop and installed Ubuntu 12.04 on it. Since it is a "Windows 7 Enabled" machine or some other proprietary nonsense like that, a few hardware features are designed only to work with W7. Eventually I found a way to enable these hardware functions by booting into the W7 recovery disc; however, they sporadically stop working. I'm moderately surprised that I was able to get anything to work at all, so I don't especially want to spend more time fixing the problems in a different fashion. Now I don't actually own the recovery disc; it's my father's. Since it's a pain to have to go asking for the disc every time the features stop working, I made an image of the disc and was hoping to make a 'recovery' partition like some computers have. However, unetbootin and GRUB2 both want a kernel and initrd to point to on startup, and something like set root=(hd0,1) loopback lo /w7r.iso set root=(lo) chainloader +1 in the spirit of the makeactive/ chainloader +1 commands that I used to use to dual-boot Linux and Windows simply gives me a file-not-found error. My question, therefore, is: Is it possible to, having written a Windows iso to a partition (such as with dd if=w7r.iso of=/dev/sda4) to a partition, convince GRUB2 to boot from it? • USB Harddisk not working on dual boot windows7/8

  Yesterday I installed Windows 8 on a machine that already had Windows 7. They are on dual boot and both systems work fine. The problem is that inserting a USB hard disk in either system does nothing. If I connect a USB mouse or mobile phone, they work fine, so the USB plugs are active/working and the USB hard drives that I am trying to connect work on my other laptop just fine. I have tried to uninstall all USB-related items in Device Manager and let them reinstall upon restart, but that didn't help. The USB drive does not show up in disk management either. The strange thing is that it is exactly the same situation on both windows. USB mice etc. work just fine and USB hard drives do not. Any ideas on solving this problem would be great. ...Don't know if it is important, but this is a Toshiba Tecra R950 Laptop. EDIT: I have found out that my other USB HD (Western Digital) works on this laptop, but for my StoreJet Transcend and Adata "something" does not work. All three work on another Windows 7 laptop. Sizewise the WD is in the middle at 400 GB. The StoreJet is 640 GB and the Adata is 200 GB.

• Finding Bluetooth link key in Windows 7, to double pair a device on dualboot computer

  How can I dig up the Bluetooth link key for a paired device in Windows 7? Is this something that is dependent on the Bluetooth stack I'm using (Toshiba), or is there a generic place to store these in Windows 7? Note: I'm not talking about the six-digit code usually typed by the user during pairing - that is worthless since it's discarded after pairing process. What I mean is the 128-bit link key that the devices exchange during pairing, and use thereafter to encrypt all their Bluetooth traffic. Background: I dualboot Windows 7 / Ubuntu on my laptop, and I would like to have my phone paired to both OS's. Since the dualbooting computer has only one Bluetooth adapter and thus only one Bluetooth address, I cannot do two pairings to the phone, since on the second pairing (Windows) the phone just replaces the previous pairing (Linux) to the same Bluetooth address. A thread on Ubuntu forums pointed me to what I have to do - pair first on Linux, then on Windows, and then replace the link key on Linux side with the one Windows negotiated. I can find the Linux side pairing key from /var/lib/Bluetooth/[BD_ADDR]/linkkeys - no problems there. However, on Windows side I can't find the key. According to the forum post, on Windows side the key should be in SYSTEM\ControlSet002\services\BTHPORT\Parameters\Keys\[BD_ADDR] but while that registry key does exist, it has no subkeys. (And a similar registry path in ControlSet001 didn't have any subkeys either.) One thing I've been instructed to do is to capture all events during pairing with Sysinternals Process Monitor. I did this, but I haven't been able to find any useful information from the captured events, not even by exporting the data to a huge XML and grepping that with the BD_ADDRs (with or without colons). • Wireless card overheating?

  Ok, so I've had my laptop for several years (I wanna say 4, but possibly more), it's a Toshiba Satellite. I'm running Linux mint 15, and am having a strange new issue, after several hours of running my wireless stops. It can SEE wireless networks, but refuses to connect to any of them. (On a sidenote, connecting to a router with a cable at this point works fine) The fact that it can SEE the networks make me think the card is in good condition, and it's software related The fact that it works for several hours before booting me makes me think perhaps the transmitter is getting too hot. I don't use my laptop in dusty environments, and keep it on an elevated surface (alternatively, I actively try not to let it sit on soft surfaces where the vents get covered). I spray out the cpu fan about once a year with compressed air about once a year, so I really don't think the insides should be too dirty. Finally, unfortunately, sensors only gives me CPU temps, but they run about 40-50 degrees C, which from my understanding is perfectly normal for an I3. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I can do to determine the root cause of this?

• Step by step instructions to make dos "see" and "access" usb hard drives

  I am stuck with an USB external hard drive (Maxtor 1 Touch) 750GB that crashed. I have photos and home movies (my son's birth, first birthday etc) that are very important to me. I am given to understand that Spinrite is a very good tool to use, but It does not come "with out of the box" capabilities to access USB drives. If I open the case to get the HDD out from my External HDD, I would compromise the warrenty and I would not be able to exchange the Drive. I have done a bit of research and have the drivers that could help. But the bit I am missing is, How to put it all together. I would really appreciate it if some one can give me step by step instruction where I can create a dos boot cd that can load the drivers and assign a drive letter to it so that I can make Dos "See" the external hard drive. I have a Toshiba satellite laptop that runs Windows XP (Home). It does not have a floppy drive. I will be greatful to your help in the regard.

• DVD-burner disappears when using grub

  This is a rather annoying problem I have with Linux on my laptop. Whenever I install any Linux distro that relies on grub (which is about 99 % apparently) it will mess up my DVD-drive and the drive will not be recognized after booting, no matter the OS (Ubunntu, Arch, Windows Vista or 7). I know the problem has nothing to do the DVD-drive itself, because I bought a new one a few months ago. I am also sure that grub is messing the drive up, because I have tried to use LILO, which worked fine (except for horrible boot times.) This problem have persisted through about 3-4 years and it is a pretty bad show stopper whenever I want to work with Linux. I had hoped it would get fixed over time, but no one seems to have the exact problem I have. The drive is connected with an IDE connection. Update: The old drive was a Toshiba Samsung SN-S082. I don't know the model number of the new one, but it is HP (I think). Things I have tried to fix it: Mess about with some BIOS settings like enabling AHCI and change some IDE settings. Installing a different boot loader DOES fix the problem but I would like to use grub.

• Looking for an application that scrolls or pans netbook screens running Windows

  I'm looking for a Windows 7 and XP compatible Windows desktop panning/scrolling tool. This is to solve a problem where some applications for example MSN have settings/preference Windows that are not resizeable. I have a Netbook with a small maximum screen resolution e.g. 1024x600. The fixed non-resizeable windows are too large for this display screen size so I cannot see all of the items on these windows, particularly the OK button to save settings. What I would like is a desktop scrolling/panning tool where if I move my mouse pointer to any edge of the display, it pans to show the region of the too-large-fixed window that I could not see. I use a Samsung N110 and Toshiba NB100 netbooks. • How To Boot with "mem=1024m" Argument using GRUB - Ubuntu 10.04

  I am still working on this question. This new one is a different question so I thought it would be good to post a new question. Is this the proper protocol or should I have just edited the other question? I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 with the kernel 2.6.32-22-generic on a Toshiba Satellite laptop. When I enter the GRUB menu (I have Ubuntu 9.10 installed as well), I can choose which kernel to boot. I use scroll down to the one I want and press "e" and I expect to be able to enter mem=1024m and force the kernel to use this much memory. But when I run cat /proc/meminfo or look in the process manager after booting wth this argument I still see all the RAM: ~2 GB. Am I using this boot argument incorrectly? The boot configuration (before I add anything) looks like this: insmod ext2 set root=(hd0,1) search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set 10270f21-1c42-494b-bd3f-813c23f6d\ 518 linux /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.32-22-generic root=UUID=10270f21-1c42-494b-b\ d3f-813c23f6d518 ro quiet splash initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.32-22-generic The way I did this was that I added the mem=1024m after the last line and pressed Ctrl+x (Emacs save and boot the kernel) and the system booted. I tried adding mem=1024m to the end and the beginning of this list and it appeared to not change the RAM allocation.

I could buy two 1 GB chips to replace both of the current 512 MB chips, to give me 2 GB of RAM. Or, the price is the same to buy one 2 GB chip, to replace just one of the 512 MB chips, and give me 2.5 GB total. The RAM it takes is PC2-4200 533MHz DDR2. What do you think would be better: buying two 1 GB chips so it can take advantage of dual-channel operation, or buying one 2 GB chip to end up with more total RAM but not dual-channel operation? Like I said, price is the same, so performance is the only consideration. I'm not doing anything especially intensive like video or photo editing -- just having multiple Office programs open, playing music, browsers, etc., but currently even opening the first application takes forever. If it matters, the laptop is a Toshiba Qosmio G25-AV513 running Windows XP Media Center SP3. Thanks! Kevin

• Without an internet connection my computer loads programs slowly. With an internet connection they load quickly

  Gday. I've a laptop, with 8gb of RAM and a Samsung 830 SSD with about 2/5th of free space out of its 256gb. Win7 64b. Laptop is a Toshiba T130. In the other day I noticed that it took a long time to load a program, for example the python interpreter at the time the computer didn't have access to the home network. In both cases the computer boots quickly. About 40 seconds. Without internet opening the python interpreter, or notepad2.exe, or any program individually takes around 10 seconds. With internet connection (through WiFi) opening the same programs takes about 2 seconds. In both cases, it becomes SSD-instant-quick to open a program from a cold boot. I don't have any network mapped drives. I've tried with AV off (Avast antivirus) and same effect. I've installed all MS updates. I've googled and googled and have found nothing of help. I've run the Samsung SSD magician to "optimise" ssd and that didn't help. What could I do to determine & fix this issue?

• Can a OS be copied from one hard drive to another and still boot?

  Background My computer gets stuck on the make and model screen after the BIOS screen, aka the Toshiba screen. After some research I've realized that the problem is the hard drive. I'm using an old 250gb model that USED to be used for backup purposes, however I loaded windows 7 ultimate onto it This hard drive has trouble getting up to full RPM therefore cannot boot correctly until its warmed up. meaning that my pc needs to be restarted several times before it boots (once it took my 13 reboots to get my pc on!) From my research its either that, or lack of power supply, and I've tried multiple PSUs. Question I have my OS and all my files on this 250gb HDD... If I were to literally open the explorer, and copy EVERYTHING (including hidden files obviously) from this 250gb, to a spare 500gb I've got knocking about... Will it boot if I just copy everything? I cannot be bothered to load another OS onto my PC so if there is a way I can just copy the existing one over from one HDD to another and have it boot normally. This would be epic! I've heard about HDD cloning software. But before I purchase and/or download this software, I need to know if i can just copy the OS over through the windows explorer

• Microphone doesn't work

  I'm having a trouble with my built in microphone. Even if I use headphone with mic, it doesn't really work. The weird thing is, if I clap the green lines of the speaker icon jumps, but if I speak it doesn't. I have also tried some recordings, but I can not hear myself and adjusting the volume didn't help at all. I tried to restore it, still no change. I have updated it in the device manager, but it said there that it's up to date and the devices are working properly. Until I decided to recover the whole system (wherein I pressed zero and switch on button) to my surprise, the settings became different, most programs were deleted, even my files. It's like it was formatted and I'm so sad that the mic was not fixed. I really don't know what to do now. My laptop model is Toshiba satellite m840. I want to it return to its settings/set up just before I Recover the system and bring back all the programs that we're installed and of course, most of all, to fix my microphone so I can use Skype again and other video calling application.. I hope someone could help me. Thanks a lot!

• Laptop Synaptics Touchpad No Longer Functional After Windows 7 Upgrade

  I have a Toshiba laptop, with an integral Synaptics (PS/2 port) touch pad, that I bought pre-installed with 32-bit Windows Vista. After doing a clean install of 32-bit Windows 7, I can no longer get the touch pad to respond. The function (FN) keys on the laptop still operate correctly, but they no longer display on screen when used. I have no way of knowing if the function key to enable / disable the touch pad is working correctly, although the function keys for dim / brighten display, as well as others, work fine. I have removed the device from the device manager and allowed it to reinstall with no success. I have removed the previous drivers and updated them with the current 32-bit Win7 compatible versions from Synaptics website, with no success. The Synaptics icon displays in the taskbar, and the touch pad is available in the Device Manager, both of which say the device is installed and working correctly. I have checked to make sure that the touch pad is enabled in the Synaptics menu, and have tried toggling enabled / disabled with no success. If anyone has any suggestions, or knows where I can find a solution, I would be very appreciative.
