• Is there a website to lookup common, already written functions?

  I'm sitting here writing a function that I'm positive has been written before, somewhere on earth. It's just too common to have not been attempted, and I'm wondering why I can't just go to a website and search for a function that I can then copy and paste into my project in 2 seconds, instead of wasting my day reinventing the wheel. Sure there are certain libraries you can use, but where do you find these libraries and when they are absent, is there a site like I'm describing? Possibly a wiki of some type that contains free code that anybody can edit and improve?

• Getting float values out of PostgreSQL

  I am having trouble retrieving float/real values out of PostgreSQL. For example, I would like to store: 123456789123456, the retrieve that exact same number with a select statement. table tbl (num real) insert into tbl(num) values('123456789123456'); As it is now, if I "select num from tbl" the result is "1.23457e+14" If I run "select CAST(num AS numeric) as num from tbl" the result is 123457000000000 If I run "select CAST(num AS float) as num from tbl" the result is 123456788103168 (where did this number come from) How on earth can I select the value and get "123456789123456" as the result? I want to be able to add POST variables to it like $obj->addvar('Name', 'Value'); What I have now is this: function addvar($var, $val) { $postvars[] = Array($var=>$val); } function initiate() { $this->q = $postvars; } if(!empty($this->post)) { $this->params = http_build_query($q); } I haven't tested because it's too incomplete, But would my addvar() function work? How on earth do I append a key+value to the array so http_build_query would accept it? • Rails validation "failing when succeeding"

  I have this in my user.rb: attr_accessor :old_password def validate unless password.nil? errors.add_to_base("Old password entered incorrect") unless self.valid_password? old_password end end I have old_password as a a virtual attribute that has to be validated as matching with the current before updating to a new password. My problem is that upon correct entering ( password == password confirmation and self.valid_password? old_password ) an error will yield and pass me back to the form. The strange part is that the data will actually be updated in the database, and it will not on wrong input; although it will yield the very same error ("Old password entered incorrect"). What on earth am I doing wrong?

• Java operator overload

  Coming from C++ to Java, the obvious unanswered question is why not operator overload. On the web some go about: "it's clearly obfuscated and complicate maintenance" but no one really elaborates that further (I completely disagree, actually). Other people pointed out that some objects do have an overload (like String operator +) but that is not extended to other objects nor is extensible to the programmer's decision. I've heard that they're considering extending the favour to BigInt and similar, but why not open that for our decisions? How exactly if complicates maintenance and where on earth does this obfuscate code? Isn't : Complex a, b, c; a = b + c; much simpler than: Complex a, b, c; a.equals( b.add(c) ); ??? Or is it just habit?

• does the accelerometer work for the iphone/ipad simulator?

  From what I can tell, my app should be firing accelerometer events while Im using the iPad simulator in XCode, but its not. I have googled around and it somewhat seems that the accelerometer is not implemented in the simulator, is this correct? If so, why on earth would they have a "Hardware-Shake Gesture" menu option? • C# Stream Reader adding \n to XML

  I use the StreamReader class to obtain XML for my GeoCoding process from Google. StreamReader srGeoCode = new StreamReader(WebRequest.Create(Url).GetResponse().GetResponseStream()); String GeoCodeXml = srGeoCode.ReadToEnd(); XmlDocument XmlDoc = new XmlDocument(); GeoCode oGeoCode = new GeoCode(); XmlDoc.Load(GeoCodeXml); I get XML back but it adds \n and other extras to the XML <?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" ?>\n<kml xmlns=\"http://earth.google.com/kml/2.0\"><Response>\n <name> I have the same code in VB and it does not do this. I can successfully GeoCode my information using the VB version of this console app. Is there a reason the C# version adds this extra data to the XML that I retrieve back? I am trying my best to convert everything over to C#. I enjoy coding in it over VB.

  Hi, I recently struggled with an apparently simple Android layout: I wanted a WebView above a Button. It worked fine with the following parameters: WebView: Height: wrap-content Weight: unset (by the way, what is the default?) Button: Height: wrap-content Weight: unset However if the web page became too big it spilled out over the button. I tried various combinations of weights and heights, and all except one either completely hide the button, or partially cover it. This is the one that works (copied from http://code.google.com/p/apps-for-android/source/browse/trunk/Samples/WebViewDemo/res/layout/main.xml): WebView: Height: 0 Weight: 1 Button: Height: wrap-content Weight: unset If you change any of those, e.g. give button a weight or change the WebView height to wrap-content then it doesn't work. My question is: Why? Can someone please explain what on Earth the android layout system is thinking?

  I'll start by quoting google's blog Project owners can now create multiple repositories for their project, and they can choose to make any of those new repositories a clone of any of the project's other repositories. These project clones share the same commit access permissions as the original project and make it easier for project members to work together on new features. A common pattern in the Mercurial world is to place each "official" branch into a separate repository with naming conventions like "project-crew", "project-stable", and so on. I've done exactly this. I have my default repository and then I've cloned that repository to a repo named "dev". I intend to use the default repository as my stable repo and then the dev repo as my primary development repo. Now I'm just wondering how on earth I should go about to pull and push between the default and the dev repositories?

• gcc returns error with nested class

  Howdy, I am attempting to use the fully qualified name of my nested class as below, but the compiler is balking! template <class T> class Apple { //constructors, members, whatevers, etc... public: class Banana { public: Banana() { //etc... } //other constructors, members, etc... }; }; template <class K> class Carrot{ public: //etc... void problemFunction() { Apple<int>::Banana freshBanana = someVar.returnsABanana(); //line 85 giveMonkey(freshBanana); //line 86 } }; My issue is, the compiler says: Carrot.h:85: error: expected ';' before 'freshBanana' Carrot.h:86: error: 'freshBanana' was not declared in this scope I had thought that using the fully qualified name permitted me to access this nested class? It's probably going to smack me in the face, but what on earth am I not seeing here??

• Can't pass a single parameter to lambda function in MVVM Light Toolkit's RelayCommand

  I don't know if there's a difference between Josh Smith's and Laurent Bugnion's implementations of RelayCommand or not, but everywhere I've looked, it sounds like the Execute portion of RelayCommand can take 0 or 1 parameters. I've only been able to get it to work with 0. When I try something like: public class Test { public RelayCommand MyCommand { get; set; } public Test() { MyCommand = new RelayCommand((param) => SomeFunc(param)); } private void SomeFunc( object param) { } } I get the error: Delegate 'System.Action' does not take '1' arguments. Just to make sure I am not insane, I went to the definition of RelayCommand to make sure I didn't have some rogue implementation in my solution somewhere, but sure enough, it was just Action, and not Action<. What on earth am I missing here?

• iphone/ipad orientation handling

  This is more of a general question for people to provide me guidance on, basically Im learning iPad/iPhone development and have finally come across the multi-orientation support question. I have looked up a fair amount of doco, and my book "Beginning iPhone 3 Development" has a nice chapter on it. But my question is this, if I was to programatically change my controls (or even use different views for each orientation) how on earth to people maintain their code base? I can just imagine so many issues with spaghetti code/thousands of "if" checks all over the place, that it would drive me nuts to make one small change to the UI arrangement. Does anyone have experience handling this issue? What is a nice way to control it? Thanks a lot Mark

• YouTube API Get all videos uploaded feed

  Hi Guys, I can't seem to retrieve ALL videos from a particular channel on YouTube, despite the API giving example code that should perform just that. I'm using Java. http://gdata.youtube.com/feeds/api/users/GoogleDevelopers/uploads The above rss feed is the URL they suggest using along with the following sample code.. /*init the list*/ String feedUrl = "http://gdata.youtube.com/feeds/api/users/GoogleDevelopers/uploads"; VideoFeed videoFeeder = null; videoFeeder = serviceobject.getFeed(new URL(feedUrl), VideoFeed.class); Looping this with a for loop suggests 25 entries (as per the RSS). However - the actual number of videos uploaded is significantly larger. (662 at time of writing). My query is how on earth you retrieve everything with the API, not just a subset of the data.   Hi Everyone, I was wondering if someone could do me massive favour.. I really don't understand how to make use of API's - so I was wondering if, using Basecamp as an example, someone could talk me though the basics. So far I have an application with a dashboard controller/view, I have put basecamp.rb into my /lib directory, added the following to my application_controller: def basecamp_connect Basecamp.establish_connection!('XXXXXX.basecamphq.com', 'USER', 'PASS', false) @basecamp = Basecamp.new end Obviously changing the required parts to my credentials. Next up I have added the following to my dashboard_controller: def index Basecamp::TodoList.find(:all) end Next I presume I have to somehow list the Todo's on the dashboard using some sort of loop. Am I doing the right thing, if so - how on earth do I display all the todo items and if not - what am I doing wrong/missing. It doesn't have to be todo's, anything from basecamp or any other popular API service would be a good start. It's just that I happen to have a basecamp account! Thanks, Danny

  Using the user's currentLocale from the device, I want to have a date format exactly like the one generated for NSDateFormatterFullStyle minus the year: [dateFormatter setDateStyle:NSDateFormatterFullStyle]; Friday, 21 September (2012) I've noticed the iPhone app, Living Earth does this and works for all locales, so does the iPhone lock screen. A custom formatter such as, [dateFormatter setDateFormat:@"EEEE, MMMM"]; won't change with localisation. Can anyone shed some light on how to accomplish this? None of the options for date style seem to do this. Thanks

  I have the following javascript: $('#ge-display').click(function (event) { window.open('/googleearth/ge-display.php','','scrollbars=yes,menubar=no,height=650,width=1000,resizable=yes,toolbar=yes,location=no,status=no'); event.stopPropagation(); return false; }); the element with id 'ge-display' is a standard link: <a href="/googleearth/ge-display.php" id="ge-display" target="_blank">Load Google Earth Plugin (in a new window)</a> The problem is - when I take out the 'return false;' line from the click event handler, the javascript popup opens, and then another browser window opens - I thought stopPropagation() would prevent the links own click handler? I've also tried stopImmediatePropagation() - but I still need to return false to stop the default behaviour of the link.

• cvs to mercurial conversion gets tags wrong

  I've tried all the recommended conversion techniques Mostly they manage to get the latest version of the files right, but every one of them trashes my history. Many (most?) of the tags from my cvs project have at least one file in error when I run "hg up $tag" My cvs repo is not all that complicated. Why can't anything convert it? I'd like to dump cvs and convert to mercurial, but not without history. To recap my frustration: I tried hg convert (tried --branchsort,--timesort, fuzz=0) I tried cvs2svn and then hg convert. tailor does not work with recent versions of mercurial fromcvs disappeared from the face of the earth hg-cvs-import has been abandoned for 4 years and doesn't work with recent versions of hg I have tried using the two most recent versions of mercurial ( 1.5 and 1.5.1 ).

  Hi, I've been thinking recently on using the Object Oriented design in the sorting algorithm. However I was not able to find a proper way to even come closer in making this sorting algorithm that does the sorting in O(n) time. Ok, here is what I've been thinking for a week. I have a set of input data. I will assign a mass to each of the input data (assume input data a type of Mass). I will be placing all my input data in the space all at same distance from earth. And I will make them free fall. According to gravitational law, the heaviest one hits the ground first. And the order in which they hit will give me the sorted data. This is funny in some way, but underneath I feel that this should be possible using the OO that I have learnt till date Is it really possible to make a sorting technique that uses gravitational pull like scenario or am I stupid/crazy?

The question is about how to do real-time GPS tracking system things; if we have the following scenario: Rather than connecting a GPS receiver to a PC, the user will have a mobile device with an integrated GPS receiver. Location data will be sent over mobile network using GPRS data connection to a server side. The data will be processed and a KML path file will be created and updated on time intervals and used to track the user using Google Earth. The question is: what is the best method to accomplish this scenario for the server side; is it a web service, a web application, a windows service, a windows application or what exactly? Taking into account that the system will serve a number of users simultaneously, and that more users may use the system in the future(scalability issues).   So I'm trying to parse an incoming request in PHP which has the following header set: Authorization: Custom Username Simple question: how on earth do I get my hands on it? If it was Authorization: Basic, I could get the username from $_SERVER["PHP_AUTH_USER"]. If it was X-Custom-Authorization: Username, I could get the username from $_SERVER["HTTP_X_CUSTOM_AUTHORIZATION"]. But neither of these are set by a custom Authorization, var_dump($_SERVER) reveals no mention of the header (in particular, AUTH_TYPE is missing), and PHP5 functions like get_headers() only work on responses to outgoing requests. I'm running PHP 5 on Apache with an out-of-the box Ubuntu install.
