• The C++ Standard Template Library as a BDB Database (part 1)

  If you've used C++ you undoubtedly have used the Standard Template Libraries. Designed for in-memory management of data and collections of data this is a core aspect of all C++ programs. Berkeley DB is a database library with a variety of APIs designed to ease development, one of those APIs extends and makes use of the STL for persistent, transactional data storage. dbstl is an STL standard compatible API for Berkeley DB. You can make use of Berkeley DB via this API as if you are using C++ STL classes, and still make full use of Berkeley DB features. Being an STL library backed by a database, there are some important and useful features that dbstl can provide, while the C++ STL library can't. The following are a few typical use cases to use the dbstl extensions to the C++ STL for data storage. When data exceeds available physical memory.Berkeley DB dbstl can vastly improve performance when managing a dataset which is larger than available memory. Performance suffers when the data can't reside in memory because the OS is forced to use virtual memory and swap pages of memory to disk. Switching to BDB's dbstl improves performance while allowing you to keep using STL containers. When you need concurrent access to C++ STL containers.Few existing C++ STL implementations support concurrent access (create/read/update/delete) within a container, at best you'll find support for accessing different containers of the same type concurrently. With the Berkeley DB dbstl implementation you can concurrently access your data from multiple threads or processes with confidence in the outcome. When your objects are your database.You want to have object persistence in your application, and store objects in a database, and use the objects across different runs of your application without having to translate them to/from SQL. The dbstl is capable of storing complicated objects, even those not located on a continous chunk of memory space, directly to disk without any unnecessary overhead. These are a few reasons why you should consider using Berkeley DB's C++ STL support for your embedded database application. • In what URL segment do you have language? /en/admin/dashboard or /admin/en/dashboard?

  maybe you are thinking that this is another dump question about language in URL, but I hope it is not! I've red many articles on this, but non of them was dealing with "sections of site" (described bellow). I am programming a new application platform in laravel/php and I am still not 100% convinced where to put language slug. There are many places where you can put it - some of them are better some are worse: example.com/en/article en.example.com/article example.com/article?lang=en My personal choice is to put language after the domain - so the first option in above list. But what if you are in some special secion like admin or api? where do you put language then? example.com/en/admin/dashboard example.com/en/api/v1/user/login or example.com/admin/en/dashboard example.com/api/v1/en/user/login (in frontend it is left the same: example.com/en/some-article) what do you preffer? what are cons and pros? One thing is using language in first segments is far more easier to programm than when it have some variants... P.S. whould you recoment using only en, cs or do it in full power with cz-CZ, en-US ? thanks for any thoughts! J.

• Front-end structure of large scale Django project

  Few days ago, I started to work in new company. Before me, all front-end and backend code was written by one man (oh my...). As you know, Django app contains two main directories for front-end: /static - for static(public) files and /templates - for django templates Now, we have large application with more than 10 different modules like: home, admin, spanel, mobile etc. This is current structure of files and directories: FIRST - /static directory. As u can see, it is mixed directories with some named like modules, some contains global libs. one more: SECOND - /templates directory. Some directories named like module with mixed templates, some depends on new version =), some used only in module, but placed globally. and more: I think, that this is ugly, non-maintable, put-in-stress structure! After some time spend, i suggest to use this scheme, that based on module-structure. At first, we have version directories, used for save full project backup, includes: /DEPRECATED directory - for old, unused files and /CURRENT (Active) directory, that contains production version of project. I think it's right, because we can access to older or newer version files fast and easy. Also, we are saved from broken or wrong dependencies between different versions. Second, in every version we have standalone modules and global module. Every module contains own /static and /templates directories. This structure used to avoid broken or wrong dependencies between different modules, because every module has own js app, css tables and local images. Global module contains all libraries, main stylesheets and images like logos or favicon. I think, this structure is much better to maintain, update, refactoring etc. My question is: How do you think, is this scheme better than current? Can this scheme live, or it is not possible to implement this in Django app?

• West Palm Beach Dev Group August 2012 Meeting Recap

  As the saying goes, it’s better late than never. Such is the case with my overdue West Palm Beach Dev Group August 2012 meeting report. Our August meeting was full of both knowledge and adventure. It comes as no surprise that the knowledge was brought to us by our favorite DotNetNuke Technical Evangelist, Will Strohl. Will introduced and thoroughly presented the new social features in DNN 6.2. Unfortunately, our meeting date coincided with Hurricane Isaac having just passed us by. Aside from road closures and floods that kept public schools closed for two days, our meeting host, PC Professor, had to close the school the day of our meeting on a short notice due to flooding which we found out about at midnight on the day of the event.  This left us scrambling to find an available alternate meeting location close enough to our original venue. Cancelling the meeting was always an option, but we opted to keep it as the very last resort. Luckily, we were fortunate to find a meeting room at the Hampton Inn only a few minutes away from our original location. Having heard of our challenge, our event sponsor, Applied Innovations, stepped-in and covered the meeting room cost in addition to the food and beverages. • sharepoint 2007 access denied when accessing user profiles via ssp

  Guys I have a really strange problem in regards to sharepoint mysites today I go into user profiles and properties in order to setup a property all of a sudden I get access denied. First off I know that I'm logged in with the correct account after the access denied I decided to click on personalization services and permissions I than get An unhandled exception occurred in the user interface.Exception Information: Cannot complete this action. I'm not seeing anything in the server application logs either. So have any of you guys seen this before is there some kind of way to grant a user account the manage profiles right permission using stsadm. BTW all other fucntions of the ssp are working fine so my question is if the user profiles and my sites of a ssp tanks how do you repair that portion of the ssp? BTW the user accounts that I'm using are site collection owners and also they have full control at the web application level. • What’s the password for my FileVault 2 boot volume?

  Apple’s support document for FileVault 2 (a.k.a. “full disk encryption” or “FDE”) has lots of information about enabling FDE and what it means for booting the machine. However, it doesn’t cover one very important thing I’m trying to do: mount the drive in the Recovery HD environment to reinstall OS X on it. The Recovery HD environment asks me for the volume passphrase so it can mount my drive and try to install OS X onto it. If this were an external drive which I’d manually enabled FDE on with diskutil, or an external Time Machine volume, I’d know it because it makes you pick one (just like a regular login password), but FileVault 2 never asked me for a volume passphrase (I assume it selects one behind the scenes). I’ve tried my main user’s password, but that doesn’t work, and neither does the recovery key set for the volume. Keychain Access doesn’t have anything that I could find. How do I unlock this volume?

  The advantages of using the Oracle Metadata Services Repository as a central storage for the metadata. SCA has been available since the release of the Oracle SOA Suite 11g. This technology combines and orchestrates several SOA components inside an SCA composite, making design, development, deployment, and maintenance easier. SCA development is metadata-driven, meaning that metadata artifacts, such as Web Services Description Language (WSDL), XML Schema Definition (XSD), XML, others, define the composite's behavior. With the increased number of composites and the dependencies among them, it became necessary to manage all the metadata in an adequate way. This article will address the advantages of using the Oracle Metadata Services (MDS) repository as a central storage for the metadata. The MDS repository is a central part of the Oracle Fusion Middleware landscape, managing the metadata for several technologies, such as Oracle Application Development Framework (Oracle ADF), Oracle WebCenter, and the Oracle SOA Suite. This article is divided into three parts. The first part provides an overview of SCA and MDS. The second part describes some MDS tasks that help in the management of the SCA metadata files inside the repository. • Fixing NativeHR 0×80070002 Error When Retracting or Deploying SharePoint Apps from Visual Studio

• TechEd 2012: Dude Where&rsquo;s My Azure

  It has been a fun first morning at TechEd North America.  They keynote was both informative and entertaining.  Some of the high points included a walk through of Windows Server 2012 and its new Hyper-V capabilities and use of ODX (offloaded data transfer).  Between seeing stats like being able to being able run a Hyper-V VM with 1TB of memory and watching ODX move a 10GB file at a rate of 1GB per second was really impressive. The fun started when Scott Guthrie was doing his keynote demo and popped up an iPhone emulator from Visual Studio.  There is just something wrong with that picture and the WPDev community agreed.  This was followed by an iPad emulator and by that time the groans across Twitter were rolling. Later in the morning The Gu kept us laughing in the Azure Foundations session when he name a server Dude (I believe a suggestion from the crowd).  After that I thought I was watching the turtle in Finding Nemo.  Duuuuude! In the expo area the line for the Windows Phone booth was ridiculous.  Granted this is a Microsoft event and is sure to be full of MS fan boys, but the only other time I have seen that much enthusiasm for Windows Phones in one place was on the flight down.   I'm migrating my current half-size rack to a full-size rack and want to take the opportunity to reorganize and sort our spaghetti-hell of ethernet cables. What system do you use for organising your cables? Do you use any tracking software? Do you physically label the cables? What are you identifying when you label each end? Mac address? Port number? Asset number? What do you use to label them? I was looking at a hand held labeler, but the wrap around laser printer sheets might work. The Brady ID PAL seems good, but it's pricey. Ideas?

• Editing true type fonts

  In typical Persian fonts which are True Type, there is a historical problem with yeh and kafs. These fonts are created for Windows 98, which didn't include full Persian support, and now, we have 2 kind of Kafs: Keheh(0x6a9, ?), and Arabic Kaf(0x643, ?), and 2 kind of Yehs: Farsi Yeh(0x6cc, ?), and Arabic Yeh(0x64a, ?). Old fonts use Arabic ones, but the standard keyboard for Persian uses the Persian ones of course. Is it possible to edit and fix these fonts? I've made many attempts to replace these characters with FontLab Studio, which I failed. Any suggestions?

  I've just completely uninstalled nginx 1.0.6 from my server (Ubuntu 11.04) using apt-get remove nginx rm -rf /etc/nginx/ rm -rf /usr/sbin/nginx rm /usr/share/man/man1/nginx.1.gz apt-get remove nginx* Now I want to install it again, however when starting nginx, I get errors such as: Restarting nginx: nginx: [emerg] open() "/etc/nginx/nginx.conf" failed (2: No such file or directory) Then I placed my own conf file, then I get a new error: Restarting nginx: nginx: [emerg] open() "/etc/nginx/mime.types" failed (2: No such file or directory) in /etc/nginx/nginx.conf:12 Now it seems that apt-get install nginx doesn't install it completely, I cleared the apt-get cache, doesn't seem to help. How can I get a full installation of nginx using apt-get?

• Outstanding Silverlight User Group Meeting last night

  We had a great Silverlight User Group Meeting in Phoenix last night! Before I go any farther I want to say thanks again to David Silverlight and Kim Schmidt for coming to talk to us! And not to forget Victor Gaudioso over the wire :) David, Kim, and Victor talked to us about the Silverlight User Group Starter Kit they are working on with an extended stellar list of talented developers. Don't bypass looking at this by thinking it's only for a User Group... this is a solid community-supported full-up application using MVVM and Ria Services that you could take and modify for your own use. Take a look at the list of developers. Chances are you know some of them... send them an email of thanks for all the hard work over the last year! David and Kim discussed the architecture and code, demonstrating features as they went. Then Victor came in through the application itself on a high-intensity live webcast from his home in California. The audience of about 15 seemed focused and interested which says a lot about the subject and presentation. Tim Heuer came bearing some gifts (swag) ... a hard-copy of Josh Smith's Advanced MVVM , and couple cheaply upgradeable copies of VS2008 Pro that were snatched up very quickly. We also gave away a few copies of Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit, some Arc mice, and some Office 2007 disks... so I don't think anyone left empty-handed. Personal thanks from me go out to Mike Palermo and Tim Heuer for the surprise they had waiting for me that's been over Twitter, and to Victor for only mentioning it at least 3 times in a 5-minute webcast. Thanks for a great evening, and I look forward to seeing all of you in a couple weeks at MIX10!

• windows server 2008 web edition cant change permissions

  hi there, Im used to using windows server 2003 but decided to get a Vista web edition for IIS7 and to run our MVC applications on. I have installed copSSH that i use for SFTP, and when i upload my files i am unable to change persmissions or take ownership or anything when logged in as an administrator. when i try to go to permissions i get: The permissions on uploads are incorrectly ordered, which may cause some entries to be ineffective. and all permissions are the grayed out. i have tried to use icacls to reset ownership and also tried to give myself full control through icacls however all attempts are met with a access is denied message and failed processing 669 files. all i wish to do is set up write and delete permissions on an upload folder for a CMS systems admin area, but i am a week into looking into this and i am still no wiser. Please could someone give some sound advice so i can get this running smooth thanks p.s i have added the copSSH notes as i think that when i SFTP the files to the server, this may somehow have some involvement in messing up permissions

• Why / how does XNA's right-handed coordinate system effect anything if you can specify near/far Z values?

  I am told repeatedly that XNA Game Studio uses a right-handed coordinate system, and I understand the difference between a right-handed and left-handed coordinate system. But given that you can use a method like Matrix.CreateOrthographicOffCenter to create your own custom projection matrix, specifying the left, right, top, bottom, zNear and zFar values, when does XNA's coordinate system come into play? For example, I'm told that in a right-handed coordinate system, increasingly negative Z values go "into" the screen. But I can easily create my projection matrix like this: Matrix.CreateOrthographicOffCenter(left, right, bottom, top, 0.1f, 10000f); I've now specified a lower value for the near Z than the far Z, which, as I understand it, means that positive Z now goes into the screen. I can similarly tweak the values of left/right/top/bottom to achieve similar results. If specifying a lower zNear than zFar value doesn't affect the Z direction of the coordinate system, what does it do? And when is the right-handed coordinate system enforced? The reason I ask is that I'm trying to implement a 2.5D camera that supports zooming and rotation, and I've spent two full days encountering one unexpected result after another.

• Need reccomendation for transferring ASP.NET MVC skills to PHP

  I am looking to translate my skills in .NET to PHP - specifically in regards to ASP.NET MVC. At work I am currently using .NET MVC 2.0 on a variety of projects and thoroughly enjoy the platform. Specifically I enjoy the very minimal configuration required to get a project up and running (just create the project, define routes, and start coding), as well as the ability for controller actions to return different items (i.e. ActionResult, JsonResult). Another piece I really like is the way the view/model interaction can be handled. For example I like being able to call return View(model) and having a view page (.aspx) load and having the full model object available to the view, regardless of the model type. I'm looking for a PHP implementation of MVC that is the most similiar to what I am already familiar with. I don't anything apart from the MVC functionality. I've looked at Zend, Symfony, CodeIgniter, etc. and, while they look like they'll be fun to play with in the future, they provide much more functionality than I need. I'd prefer to write my own DAL,form helpers, delegate handlers,authentication/ACL pieces, etc. In short, I just need something to handle the routing and view interactions and will worry about the model implementation myself. Can someone please point me to some lightweight code that accomplishes or comes close to accomplishing my objectives above. Or, can someone identify just the portions of a larger framework that do the same (again, I'm not currently interested in implementing something on a big framework, just the MVC portion and want to implement the model portion myself as much as possible). Each Monday we discuss a particular topic pertaining to development, infrastructure, Office tools, ERP, client/server operating systems etc. The webcast will be broadcast via Lync and can viewed from a web client. The idea behind the “Microsoft Mondays” program is to help you become more proficient in the products and technologies that you use and help you utilize their full potential.   Test Driven Development in Visual Studio 2010 Level – 300 (  Intermediate – Advanced ) Test Driven Development (TDD), also frequently referred to as Test Driven Design, is a development methodology where developers create software by first writing a unit test, then writing the actual system code to make the unit test pass.  The unit test can be viewed as a small specification around how the system should behave; writing it first helps the developer to focus on only writing enough code to make the test pass, thereby helping ensure a tight, lightweight system which is specifically focused meeting on the documented requirements. TDD follows a cadence of “Red, Green, Refactor.” Red refers to the visual display of a failing test – the test you write first will not pass because you have not yet written any code for it. Green refers to the step of writing just enough code in your system to make your unit test pass – your test runner’s UI will now show that test passing with a green icon. Refactor refers to the step of refactoring your code so it is tighter, cleaner, and more flexible. This cycle is repeated constantly throughout a TDD developer’s workday.
