• What is the difference between String and string in C#

  string : ------ The string type represents a sequence of zero or more Unicode characters. string is an alias for String in the .NET Framework. 'string' is the intrinsic C# datatype, and is an alias for the system provided type "System.String". The C# specification states that as a matter of style the keyword ('string') is preferred over the full system type name (System.String, or String). Although string is a reference type, the equality operators (== and !=) are defined to compare the values of string objects, not references. This makes testing for string equality more intuitive. For example: String : ------ A String object is called immutable (read-only) because its value cannot be modified once it has been created. Methods that appear to modify a String object actually return a new String object that contains the modification. If it is necessary to modify the actual contents of a string-like object Difference between string & String : ---------- ------- ------ - ------ the string is usually used for declaration while String is used for accessing static string methods we can use 'string' do declare fields, properties etc that use the predefined type 'string', since the C# specification tells me this is good style. we can use 'String' to use system-defined methods, such as String.Compare etc. They are originally defined on 'System.String', not 'string'. 'string' is just an alias in this case. we can also use 'String' or 'System.Int32' when communicating with other system, especially if they are CLR-compliant. I.e. - if I get data from elsewhere, I'd deserialize it into a System.Int32 rather than an 'int', if the origin by definition was something else than a C# system.

• IIS7 returns 403.1 (execute access denied) for image file

  I have a web app running in IIS7 on Windows Server 2008. There is a virtual directory pointing to a shared folder "/Content/Data" on another machine (running Windows Server 2003), as well as a real directory "/Content/Images" on the local machine (web app sub folder). Accessing images in "/Content/Images" is no problem, but when an image (e.g. a JPEG file) in the "/Content/Data" is accessed by a browser, IIS returns this error: HTTP Error 403.1 - Forbidden: Execute access is denied. However, the web app can read and write to / from it. I assume IIS and ASP.NET are running under different user accounts? Does anyone have an idea on what I have to do to make it work? I have set the permissions on the shared folder to Everyone Full Control, with no luck.

• Time management and self improvement

  Hi, I hope I can open a discussion on this topic as this is not a specific problem. It's a topic I hope to get some ideas on how people in similar situation as mine manage their time. OK, I'm a single developer on a software project for the last 6-8 months. The project I'm working on uses several technologies, mainly .net stuff: WPF, WF, NHibernate, WCF, MySql and other third party SDKs relevant for the project nature. My experience and knowledge vary, for example I have a lot of experience in WPF but much less in WCF. I work full time on the project and im curios on how other programmers which need to multi task in many areas manage their time. I'm a very applied type of person and prefer to code instead of doing research. I feel that doing research "might" slow down the progress of the project while I recognize that research and learning more in areas which I'm not so strong will ultimately make me more productive. How would you split up your daily time in productive coding time and time to and experiment, read blogs, go through tutorials etc. I would say that Im coding about 90%+ of my day and devoting some but very little time in research and acquiring new knowledge.

• No USB 04b4:0307 mike input after 10.04

  I am using an USB phone that is in fact a so-called "sound card" based on the 04b4:0307 chip. In fact, I have two different phones using 04b4:0307 and in fact I have a sound USB key too. This, I believe, is the start of why they call 04b4:0307 "ubiquitous" (instead of oh four bee...). But not "eternal". The mike worked in Ubuntu 9.10 and 10.04 but not later ([email protected]). "not working" means that 04b4:0307 shows in Sound Preference but that its vu-meter is mute. I have posted the full lsusb and the result of tests in various systems here: http://www.papou.byethost9.com/tmp/1043601.html Note: Tests done on VirtualBox (thankfully). But UbuntUnity no longer works on VB, so I used the LinuxMint equivalent. ?hat's fate. I could not find any problem report close enough. What should be my next step? I believe the problem occurs in module snd-usb-audio. One thing I might try if I knew how is hacking a DEB with its 10.04's source. I can hack DEBs. Any hint welcome on how to make a DEB overriding a kernel packed module. I mean that the newly installed module should have precedence, be loaded instead, the module installed with the kernel. TIA !

• "You need to confirm this operation" message when trying to delete a file

  I'm trying to delete a few files that I created, and I have full permissions on, on a Windows 2008 system. The files are within a folder that I created so they are not system files of any kind. The message box that pops up when I try to delete the file is titled "Destination Folder Access Denied", and the message is "you need to confirm this operation", with a continue, skip or cancel button. I disabled UAC and rebooted to see if this would make the message go away -- it did not. However, with UAC disabled I am able to click on continue and the files are deleted. With UAC enabled I had to provide elevated credientials before the files would delete. What causes this behaviour and how can I remove it?

• LINKED TABLES BETWEEN MS ACCESS 2003 AND MS ACCESS 2007-WRITE PERMISSIONS DENIED

  We are in the process of switching over to ACCESS 2007. We have numerous data tables in ACCESS 2003 files. In one case, the user has 2007 on his PC and opend the front end in 2007. No problems. When the the user is done, he clicks a button that executes a macro full of update queries. The macro reaches the first query and halts. We get a messge saying we do not have permisons to write to this linked table (2003 format). There were no security files involved. We re-linked from 2007, same problem. LAN permssions were ok. I wound up having to import the tables to front end in order for the user to be able to do his job.

• Debug Apache mod_status showing 151 requests/sec - 2.7 GB/second

  One of my web servers went crazy this morning and showed "151 requests/sec - 2.7 GB/second - 140.7 MB/request" the normal is like "11.1 requests/sec - 65.6 kB/second - 5.9 kB/request" I don't even think that kind of through put is possible on my server. • Chinese IME - Shape toggle key won't save

  Hello everyone, Whenever I use Google IME or other IMEs like Sogou, I always encounter the same problem: half/full-width toggle. It's easy to set half-width by default in ime prefs, but toggle key is maintained by Windows, and here the fun begins. I use Win7 x64 Ultimate. Open the "Text services and input languages", go to "Advanced key settings". Here I see "Chinese (Simplified) IME - Shape Toggle" is set to "Shift+Space". When I try to change it, it appears as if it has changed, but if you click on "Apply" instead of "OK", or just open the window again, you can see it's still "Shift+Space". The same happens with disabling this toggle - disables and goes back on Apply or reopen. Not sure if it's a bug in Win7, so asking here. Please save me. :) Thanks!

• The proxy server received an invalid response from an upstream server

  I have tomcat server behind the apache. I am using mod_ssl and reverse proxy to the tomcat. All are running at default ports. The full error is as follow. ack Proxy Error The proxy server received an invalid response from an upstream server. The proxy server could not handle the request POST /pages/doeditpage.action. Reason: Error reading from remote server If I clean the browser cache the error goes away and comes back after few attempts. I test the same on Chrome/Firefox/IE on Windows platform. Wondering it works perfectly on Linux based Chrome/Firefox. I googled a lot there are few answers at stack overflow but I am not able to find my answer. Is this a server side problem? because so many browsers cant be wrong at same time on Windows.

• The fastest way to resize images from ASP.NET. And it’s (more) supported-ish.

  I’ve shown before how to resize images using GDI, which is fairly common but is explicitly unsupported because we know of very real problems that this can cause. Still, many sites still use that method because those problems are fairly rare, and because most people assume it’s the only way to get the job done. Plus, it works in medium trust. More recently, I’ve shown how you can use WPF APIs to do the same thing and get JPEG thumbnails, only 2.5 times faster than GDI (even now that GDI really ultimately uses WIC to read and write images). The boost in performance is great, but it comes at a cost, that you may or may not care about: it won’t work in medium trust. It’s also just as unsupported as the GDI option. What I want to show today is how to use the Windows Imaging Components from ASP.NET APIs directly, without going through WPF. The approach has the great advantage that it’s been tested and proven to scale very well. The WIC team tells me you should be able to call support and get answers if you hit problems. Caveats exist though. First, this is using interop, so until a signed wrapper sits in the GAC, it will require full trust. Second, the APIs have a very strong smell of native code and are definitely not .NET-friendly. And finally, the most serious problem is that older versions of Windows don’t offer MTA support for image decoding. MTA support is only available on Windows 7, Vista and Windows Server 2008. But on 2003 and XP, you’ll only get STA support. that means that the thread safety that we so badly need for server applications is not guaranteed on those operating systems. To make it work, you’d have to spin specialized threads yourself and manage the lifetime of your objects, which is outside the scope of this article. We’ll assume that we’re fine with al this and that we’re running on 7 or 2008 under full trust. Be warned that the code that follows is not simple or very readable. This is definitely not the easiest way to resize an image in .NET. Wrapping native APIs such as WIC in a managed wrapper is never easy, but fortunately we won’t have to: the WIC team already did it for us and released the results under MS-PL. The InteropServices folder, which contains the wrappers we need, is in the WicCop project but I’ve also included it in the sample that you can download from the link at the end of the article. In order to produce a thumbnail, we first have to obtain a decoding frame object that WIC can use. Like with WPF, that object will contain the command to decode a frame from the source image but won’t do the actual decoding until necessary. Getting the frame is done by reading the image bytes through a special WIC stream that you can obtain from a factory object that we’re going to reuse for lots of other tasks: var photo = File.ReadAllBytes(photoPath); var factory = (IWICComponentFactory)new WICImagingFactory(); var inputStream = factory.CreateStream(); inputStream.InitializeFromMemory(photo, (uint)photo.Length); var decoder = factory.CreateDecoderFromStream( inputStream, null, WICDecodeOptions.WICDecodeMetadataCacheOnLoad); var frame = decoder.GetFrame(0); We can read the dimensions of the frame using the following (somewhat ugly) code: uint width, height; frame.GetSize(out width, out height); This enables us to compute the dimensions of the thumbnail, as I’ve shown in previous articles. We now need to prepare the output stream for the thumbnail. WIC requires a special kind of stream, IStream (not implemented by System.IO.Stream) and doesn’t directlyunderstand .NET streams. It does provide a number of implementations but not exactly what we need here. We need to output to memory because we’ll want to persist the same bytes to the response stream and to a local file for caching. The memory-bound version of IStream requires a fixed-length buffer but we won’t know the length of the buffer before we resize. To solve that problem, I’ve built a derived class from MemoryStream that also implements IStream. The implementation is not very complicated, it just delegates the IStream methods to the base class, but it involves some native pointer manipulation. Once we have a stream, we need to build the encoder for the output format, which could be anything that WIC supports. For web thumbnails, our only reasonable options are PNG and JPEG. I explored PNG because it’s a lossless format, and because WIC does support PNG compression. That compression is not very efficient though and JPEG offers good quality with much smaller file sizes. On the web, it matters. I found the best PNG compression option (adaptive) to give files that are about twice as big as 100%-quality JPEG (an absurd setting), 4.5 times bigger than 95%-quality JPEG and 7 times larger than 85%-quality JPEG, which is more than acceptable quality. As a consequence, we’ll use JPEG. The JPEG encoder can be prepared as follows: var encoder = factory.CreateEncoder( Consts.GUID_ContainerFormatJpeg, null); encoder.Initialize(outputStream, WICBitmapEncoderCacheOption.WICBitmapEncoderNoCache); The next operation is to create the output frame: IWICBitmapFrameEncode outputFrame; var arg = new IPropertyBag2[1]; encoder.CreateNewFrame(out outputFrame, arg); Notice that we are passing in a property bag. This is where we’re going to specify our only parameter for encoding, the JPEG quality setting: var propBag = arg[0]; var propertyBagOption = new PROPBAG2[1]; propertyBagOption[0].pstrName = "ImageQuality"; propBag.Write(1, propertyBagOption, new object[] { 0.85F }); outputFrame.Initialize(propBag); We can then set the resolution for the thumbnail to be 96, something we weren’t able to do with WPF and had to hack around: outputFrame.SetResolution(96, 96); Next, we set the size of the output frame and create a scaler from the input frame and the computed dimensions of the target thumbnail: outputFrame.SetSize(thumbWidth, thumbHeight); var scaler = factory.CreateBitmapScaler(); scaler.Initialize(frame, thumbWidth, thumbHeight, WICBitmapInterpolationMode.WICBitmapInterpolationModeFant); The scaler is using the Fant method, which I think is the best looking one even if it seems a little softer than cubic (zoomed here to better show the defects): Cubic Fant Linear Nearest neighbor We can write the source image to the output frame through the scaler: outputFrame.WriteSource(scaler, new WICRect { X = 0, Y = 0, Width = (int)thumbWidth, Height = (int)thumbHeight }); And finally we commit the pipeline that we built and get the byte array for the thumbnail out of our memory stream: outputFrame.Commit(); encoder.Commit(); var outputArray = outputStream.ToArray(); outputStream.Close(); That byte array can then be sent to the output stream and to the cache file. Once we’ve gone through this exercise, it’s only natural to wonder whether it was worth the trouble. I ran this method, as well as GDI and WPF resizing over thirty twelve megapixel images for JPEG qualities between 70% and 100% and measured the file size and time to resize. Here are the results: Size of resized images   Time to resize thirty 12 megapixel images Not much to see on the size graph: sizes from WPF and WIC are equivalent, which is hardly surprising as WPF calls into WIC. There is just an anomaly for 75% for WPF that I noted in my previous article and that disappears when using WIC directly. But overall, using WPF or WIC over GDI represents a slight win in file size. The time to resize is more interesting. WPF and WIC get similar times although WIC seems to always be a little faster. Not surprising considering WPF is using WIC. The margin of error on this results is probably fairly close to the time difference. As we already knew, the time to resize does not depend on the quality level, only the size does. This means that the only decision you have to make here is size versus visual quality. This third approach to server-side image resizing on ASP.NET seems to converge on the fastest possible one. We have marginally better performance than WPF, but with some additional peace of mind that this approach is sanctioned for server-side usage by the Windows Imaging team. It still doesn’t work in medium trust. That is a problem and shows the way for future server-friendly managed wrappers around WIC. • Picking a code review tool

  We are a startup looking to migrate from Fogbugz/Kiln to a new issue tracker/code review system. We are very happy with Jira, especially the configurability, but we are undecided on a code review tool. We have been trialing Bitbucket, but it doesn't fit our workflow well. Here are the problems we have identified with BB: Comments can be hard to find: when commenting on code not visible in the diff when code that is commented on is later changed viewing the full file doesn't include comments (also doesn't show changes) Viewing comments on individual commits can be a pain We have the implementer merge the diff and close the issue, whereas pull requests are more suited to the open source model where someone with commit rights merges We would like to automate creation of the code review (either from Jira or a command line tool) No syntax highlighting Once the pull request exceeds a certain size, BB won't show the whole thing and you have to view individual commits Linking BB pull requests to Jira issues is a bit janky: we have a pull request URL field on Jira, but this doesn't work when there are changes in multiple repositories Does anyone have any good suggestion given the above? We are tight on budget, and Jira integration is a big plus. We also have multiple commits per issue, and would like to have the option of viewing individual commits in the review. It might also be worth noting that we have a separate reviewer and tester for each issue.

  Hi, my task is to setup a MAMP webserver for our website in the easiest way so it can be managed by my colleagues without experience in server administration. MAMP PRO is an excellent solution, but some guys don't suggest to use it for serving external requests. Could you explain why it is bad (in details if possible) and how to make it secure enough to be a full-scale and not-only-local webserver? Is there a better solution? Update There is a discussion on the MAMP website. XAMPP developers say that one can make their product secure: The default configuration is not good from a securtiy point of view and it's not secure enough for a production environment - please don't use XAMPP in such environment. Since LAMPP 0.9.5 you can make your XAMPP installation secure by calling »/opt/lampp/lampp security«. Could you comment it?

• VMWare player grabbing mouse focus

  I am using the newest VMWare player on a Windows 7 machine. When I have the player open on one of my two monitors I get some weird behavior. For instance, if the player is open on monitor 2, and I minimize firefox on monitor 1, my mouse will instantly switch to the monitor 2 and be centered within the VMWare player window. This happens when I minimize any window after having been working in my VM. I hope there is a setting or tweak that I am not aware of that can remedy this. EDIT: Through more testing I have found that this only occurs when the VMWare player is full screen on either of my two monitors. • Files served from Apache are slower than other methods

  Hi I have a vps with a 1Gb/s line, when running apps on the server I can get (be it not full) reasonable speeds, but when downloading files through apache from this server I never reach close to my line speed usually 600kb/s where I know the line should be able to comfortably do 1MB/s and more. What can I do to increase the download speeds. Is there maybe a freeware or opensource php script that will increase my speeds? Note. I have confirmed that my server can upload at more than 1MB/s, also that I can download at 1MB/s or more. Also I want to increase the speeds without a download accelerator. Thanks for any help.

• Perforce Restore From Multiple Checkpoint Files?

  Hi all, I am working with a very large (~11GB) checkpoint file and trying to do a -jr (journal restore) operation. About half way through the file, I'm hitting an entry which causes an error to occur. I'm unable to come up with a conventional way to print, edit, and save changes to the offending line. So right now I'm splitting the checkpoint into files of 500k lines each...up to 47 files and counting. My question is, once I have these separate files: Can I run journal restore on each one separately to check for errors? Once fixed, is it necessary to merge them back together again to do my full journal restore? Any other ideas on how to tackle this problem would be appreciated. Thanks in advance, -aj

This view of Earth at night is a cloud-free view from space as acquired by the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership Satellite (Suomi NPP). A joint program by NASA and NOAA, Suomi NPP captured this nighttime image by the satellite’s Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS). The day-night band on VIIRS detects light in a range of wavelengths from green to near infrared and uses filtering techniques to observe signals such as city lights, gas flares, and wildfires. This new image is a composite of data acquired over nine days in April and thirteen days in October 2012. It took 312 satellite orbits and 2.5 terabytes of data to get a clear shot of every parcel of land surface. • Virus that duplicates word documents as exe

  Hi, We are facing a virus problem on our network, but I'm unable to identify it, so we can't properly deal with it. The symptoms are that the virus duplicates a word document (.doc) generating a new archive with the same name, but with an exe extension, and, after that, the virus hides the original file. So, when the user clicks over the file, it propagates itself. Symantec AV seems to be able to block it: every time that the virus tries to generate the exe, symantec blocks it, but at this point, the original file was already converted to hidden, so the user thinks that the file has been deleted. Symantec identifies it as a simple trojan horse. I already started a full scan, but it didn't found nothing. I'm trying to know the virus name in order to fight it. Does anyone has any kind of information? TIA, Bob

• Easy Server Monitoring/Logging point in time solution?

  I managed my company's servers and I need to know if load spiked at 3am on the web or mysql server, what processes were active in apache or what queries were going on in mysql at that point in time and maybe any other information that will help me. I know all of that is in log files all over and its literally a PITA to look it all up and correlate data. isnt there 1 solution thats been invented. i know we have pingdom to monitor uptime and responsiveness. like if it has taken 30 seconds to load a page or an error was given by apache or php or mysql to the browser, i want to know that and what mysql processes were running at the time, the apache full status and maybe top output also. stuff like that also would be looking for a SAAS like cloudkick, something i dont have to spend an entire month of work hours setting up when we can pay for something cheaper.

• A standard style guide or best-practice guide for web application development

  I run a very small team of developers on a web application, just three people (and not even full time). We're all capable developers, but we write our code in very different ways: we name similar things in different ways, we use different HTML and CSS to achieve similar outcomes. We can manage this OK because we're small, but can't help feeling it would be better to get some standards in place. Are there any good style guides or best-practice guides for web application development that we can use to keep our code under control? Sure, we could write them ourselves. But the reality is that with lots to do and very few staff, we're not going to bother. We need something off the shelf that we can tinker with rather than start from scratch. What we're not looking for here is basic code formatting rules like "whether to use tabs or spaces" or "where to put line breaks" — we can control this by standardising our IDEs. What we are looking for are rules for code and markup. For example: What HTML markup should be used for headers, tables, sidebars, buttons, etc. When to add new CSS styles, and what to name them When IDs should be allocated to HTML elements, and what to name them How Javascript functions should be declared and called How to pick an appropriate URL for given page or AJAX call When to use each HTTP method, ie POST vs GET vs PUT etc How to name server-side methods (Java, in our case) How to throw and handle errors and exceptions in a consistent way etc, etc.

• Clean up infected computer from viruses

  I have a computer which had AVG Free installed from day one. After several months of operation, it starts detecting viruses and trojans all the time. Besides running a full scan, what should I do to clean the computer? Should I install another anti-virus or anti-malware tool (can it help?), or once viruses infect a system the only real solution is a clean format? (Lately I've heard of viruses that burn themselves in the BIOS, so a clean format might not always work ... how common is this technique? Should I burn a fresh BIOS as well?)
