Persisting Session Between Different Browser Instances

Introduction: By default inproc session's identifier cookie is saved in browser memory. This cookie is known as non persistent cookie identifier. This simply means that if the user closes his browser then the cookie is immediately removed. On the other hand cookies which stored on the user’s hard drive and can be reused for later visits are called persistent cookies. Persistent cookies are less used than nonpersistent cookies because of security. Simply because nonpersistent cookies makes session hijacking attacks more difficult and more limited. If you are using shared computer then there are lot of chances that your persistent session will be used by other shared members. However this is not always the case, lot of users desired that their session will remain persisted even they open two instances of same browser or when they close and open a new browser. So in this article i will provide a very simple way to persist your session even the browser is closed. Description: Let's create a simple ASP.NET Web Application. In this article i will use Web Form but it also works in MVC. Open Default.aspx.cs and add the following code in Page_Load. protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e) { if (Session["Message"] != null) Response.Write(Session["Message"].ToString()); Session["Message"] = "Hello, Imran"; } This page simply shows a message if a session exist previously and set the session. Now just run the application, you will just see an empty page on first try. After refreshing the page you will see the Message "Hello, Imran". Now just close the browser and reopen it or just open another browser instance, you will get the exactly same behavior when you run your application first time . Why the session is not persisted between browser instances. The simple reason is non persistent session cookie identifier. The session cookie identifier is not shared between browser instances. Now let's make it persistent. To make your application share session between different browser instances just add the following code in global.asax. protected void Application_PostMapRequestHandler(object sender, EventArgs e) { if (Request.Cookies["ASP.NET_SessionIdTemp"] != null) { if (Request.Cookies["ASP.NET_SessionId"] == null) Request.Cookies.Add(new HttpCookie("ASP.NET_SessionId", Request.Cookies["ASP.NET_SessionIdTemp"].Value)); else Request.Cookies["ASP.NET_SessionId"].Value = Request.Cookies["ASP.NET_SessionIdTemp"].Value; } } protected void Application_PostRequestHandlerExecute(object sender, EventArgs e) { HttpCookie cookie = new HttpCookie("ASP.NET_SessionIdTemp", Session.SessionID); cookie.Expires = DateTime.Now.AddMinutes(Session.Timeout); Response.Cookies.Add(cookie); } This code simply state that during Application_PostRequestHandlerExecute(which is executed after HttpHandler) just add a persistent cookie ASP.NET_SessionIdTemp which contains the value of current user SessionID and sets the timeout to current user session timeout. In Application_PostMapRequestHandler(which is executed just before th session is restored) we just check whether the Request cookie contains ASP.NET_SessionIdTemp. If yes then just add or update ASP.NET_SessionId cookie with ASP.NET_SessionIdTemp. So when a new browser instance is open, then a check will made that if ASP.NET_SessionIdTemp exist then simply add or update ASP.NET_SessionId cookie with ASP.NET_SessionIdTemp. So run your application again, you will get the last closed browser session(if it is not expired). Summary: Persistence session is great way to increase the user usability. But always beware the security before doing this. However there are some cases in which you might need persistence session. In this article i just go through how to do this simply. I've started coding for android and I'm having difficulty trying to properly partition my code. I always end up with a very tight coupling between my UI logic and the actual controls I use to represent them. I have background in both WPF MVVM and ASP.net MVC so I'm familiar with those patterns. After some digging, I found Android Binding. It seems nice and fits nicely with my WPF background. However, it bugs me that its not built in. I'm pretty sure that the android makers have thought of this when designing the android programming interface. So my question is, what is the best practice pattern to use when developing in android, if any. I have looked and looked at their site but didn't find anything...

Open source ASP.NET MVC project for a SaaS application

I am working on a personal project that offers a service online. I'd like put this out to the public. I don't want to reinvent the wheel and use an existing template/open source project and add my service specific functionality. The features I am looking for are: Support for different roles (I need to have an admin role, customer and preferred customer roles) An admin section where admins can manage user accounts, login as with users credentials for providing support Customer pages that are role specific (Ex: Some functionality can be used by preferred customers but not non preferred ones) Preferably a pricing/plans page with payment gateway integration These are some of the basic pages available in most of service sites online. Can't get message body of certain emails from inbox using the Zend framework?

Hi guys I'm trying to read through an email inbox for my application - I'm using the zend framework here. The problem is that I'm unable to retrieve the message body for certain emails. Expected time for an CakePHP MVC form/controller and db make up

I would like to know, what is an average time for building a form in MVC pattern with for example CakePHP. I build 8 functions, two of them do custom queries, return json data, split them, expand them in a model in memory and delivers to the view. Those are three queries if you consider and an array to feed view for making some combo box. Why? all these, because I have data from json and I split them in order to make row of data like a table. Like that I changed a bit the edit.ctp but not a lot. And I created a javascript outside, with three functions. One collects data the other upon a change of a combo returnes the selected values, and does also some redirection flow. All this, in average how much time should it take ?

Mscorcfg.msc .net Configuration Tools problem

I'm trying to run Microsoft's .NET Framework Configuration Tool (Mscorcfg.msc). I have Visual Studio 2008 installed. I also have the following installed on my PC: Microsoft .Net Framework v1.0.3705 Microsoft .Net Framework 2.0 Service Pack 2 Microsoft .Net Framework 3.0 Service Pack 2 Microsoft .Net Framework 3.5 SP1 Microsoft .Net Framework v4.0.30319 I'm not sure why, but I can't start "Mscorcfg.msc" the usual way (as suggested in the http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/2bc0cxhc(VS.80).aspx and http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/2bc0cxhc.aspx URL). I looked for "Mscorcfg.msc" on my PC and found only 1 occurence (in the C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386 folder). When I double-click on the .msc file in Windows Explorer, I get the "MMC could not create the snap-in." message. What should I do ? Thanks

I cannot grok MVC, what it is, and what it is not?

I cannot grok what MVC is, what mindset or programming model should I acquire so MVC stuff can instantly "lightbulb" on my head? If not instantly, what simple programs/projects should I try to do first so I can apply the neat things MVC brings to programming. OOP is intuitive and easier, object is all around us, and the benefits of code reuse using OOP-paradigm instantly click to anyone. You can probably talk to anybody about OOP in a few minutes and lecture some examples and they would get it. While OOP somehow raise the intuitiveness aspect of programming, MVC seems to do the opposite. I'm getting negative thoughts that some future employers(or even clients) would look down upon me for not using MVC technology. Though I probably get the skinnable aspect of MVC, but when I try to apply it to my own project, I don't know where to start. And also some programmers even have diverging views on how to accomplish MVC properly. Take this for instance from Jeff's post about MVC: The view is simply how you lay the data out, how it is displayed. If you want a subset of some data, for example, my opinion is that is a responsibility of the model. So maybe some programmers use MVC, but they somehow inadvertently use the View or the Controller to extract a subset of data. Why we can't have a definitive definition of what and how to accomplish MVC properly? And also, when I search for MVC .NET programs, most of it applies to web programs, not desktop apps, this intrigue me further. My guess is, this is most advantageous to web apps, there's not much problem about intermixed view(html) and controller(program code) in desktop apps.

Responsive Inline Elements with Twitter Bootstrap

I absolutely love the new version of this css toolkit. They rebuilt it with a mobile first strategy and it’s very easy to layout pages once you get the hang of it. Using a css / javascript framework like bootstrap is certainly much easier than coding your layout by hand. And, you get a “leg up” when it comes to adding responsive features to your site. Bootstrap includes column layout classes that let you specify size and placement based upon the viewport width. In addition, there are a handful of responsive helpers to hide and show content based upon the user’s device size. Most notably, the visible-xs, visible-sm, visible-md, and visible-lg classes let you show content for devices corresponding to those sizes (they are listed in the bootstrap docs.) hidden-xs, hidden-sm, hidden-md, and hidden-lg let you hide content for devices with those respective sizes. These helpers work great for showing and hiding block elements. Unfortunately, there isn’t a provision yet in Twitter Bootstrap (as of the time of this writing) for inline elements. We are using the navbar classes to create a navigation bar at the top of our website, www.crowdit.com. When you shrink the width of the screen to tablet or phone size, the tools in the navbar are turned into a drop down menu, and a button appears on the right side of the navbar. This is great! But, we wanted different content to display based upon whether the items were on the navbar versus when they were in the dropdown menu. The visible-?? and hidden-?? classes make this easy for images and block elements. In our case, we wanted our anchors to show different text depending upon whether they’re in the navbar, or in the dropdown. span is inherently inline and it can be a block element. My first approach was to create two anchors for each options, one set visible when the navbar is on a desktop or laptop with a wide display and another set visible when the elements converted to a dropdown menu. That works fine with the visible-?? and hidden-?? classes, but it just doesn’t seem that clean to me. You are welcome to change the prefix to whatever feels right for you. These classes can be applied to spans in textual content to hide and show text based upon the browser width. Applying the styles is simple… <span class=”cdt-visible-xs”>This text is visible in extra small</span> <span class=”cdt-visible-sm”>This text is visible in small</span> Why would you want to do this? Here are a couple of examples, shown in screen shots. This is the CrowdIt navbar on larger displays. Notice how the text is two line and certain words are capitalized? Now, check this out! Here is a screen shot showing the dropdown menu that’s displayed when the browser window is tablet or phone sized. The markup to make this happen is quite simple…take a look. <li> <a href="@Url.Action("what-is-crowdit","home")" title="Learn about what CrowdIt can do for your Small Business"> <span class="cdt-hidden-xs">WHAT<br /><small>is CrowdIt?</small></span> <span class="cdt-visible-xs">What is CrowdIt?</span> </a> </li> There is a single anchor tag in this example and only the spans change visibility based on browser width. Building a modular Website with Zend Framework: Am I on the right way?

Hi, i´m a little bit confused by reading all this posts an tutorials about staring with Zend, because there a so many different ways to solve a problem. I only need a feedback about my code to know if iam on the right way: To simply get a (hard coded) Navigation for my side (depending on who is logged in) i build a Controller Plugin with a postDispatch method that holds following code: public function postDispatch(Zend_Controller_Request_Abstract $request) { $menu = new Menu(); //Render menu in menu.phtml $view = new Zend_View(); //NEW view -> add View Helper $prefix = 'My_View_Helper'; $dir = dirname(__FILE__).'/../../View/Helper/'; $view->addHelperPath($dir,$prefix); $view->setScriptPath('../application/default/views/scripts/menu'); $view->menu = $menu->getMenu(); $this->getResponse()->insert('menu', $view->render('menu.phtml')); } Is it right that i need to set the helper path once again? I did this in a Plugin Controller named ViewSetup. My question is: is it usual to do it this way, is there anything to improve? I´m new to Zend and in the web are many deprecated tutorials which often is not obvious. Does Windows 7 have .NET 4 installed by default?

I offered software where .NET 4.0 is needed and promised, that Windows 7 already comes with this framework. If not, the user can use the integrated "Windows Update" function to install the framework. My client said to me there is no Framework on Windows 7 Professional installed already. What are details about the situation of Windows 7 and is there an option to install .NET by using the update function of Windows 7?
