  • Booby Traps and Locked-in Kids: An Interview with a Safecracker

    - by Jason Fitzpatrick
While most of our articles focus on security of the digital sort, this interview with a professional safecracker is an interesting look the physical side of securing your goods. As part of their Interviews with People Who Have Interesting or Unusual Jobs series over at McSweeney’s, they interviewed Ken Doyle, a professional a locksmithing and safecracking veteran with 30 years of industry experience. The interview is both entertaining and an interesting read. One of the more unusual aspects of safecracking he highlights: Q: Do you ever look inside? A: I NEVER look. It’s none of my business. Involving yourself in people’s private affairs can lead to being subpoenaed in a lawsuit or criminal trial. Besides, I’d prefer not knowing about a client’s drug stash, personal porn, or belly button lint collection. When I’m done I gather my tools and walk to the truck to write my invoice. Sometimes I’m out of the room before they open it. I don’t want to be nearby if there is a booby trap. Q: Why would there be a booby trap? A: The safe owner intentionally uses trip mechanisms, explosives or tear gas devices to “deter” unauthorized entry into his safe. It’s pretty stupid because I have yet to see any signs warning a would-be culprit about the danger. • Personal | First Stop on our trip, St. Louis

    - by Jeff Julian
St. Louis is definitely a cool city. I have always looked at it as Kansas City’s big brother. I love to Arch, wonder what is would be like to have pro hockey, really like the downtown area, and have some great friends who live there. The reason we left for St. Louis on Thursday evening was to get us a head start on our journey. Since we were doing a Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives tour, it made since to have the journey start there. We picked the Hyatt Downtown as our hotel because they had an Arch Package which was suppose to get you tickets to the arch so you didn’t need to arrive early and wait in line. That ended up not working cause the arch had been selling out every day and they were no longer accepting the hotels tickets. No biggie and the hotel did try very hard to get us tickets, but we just took our chances in the line and waited. We walked over to the park and had to wait for about 20 minutes for the doors to open and had tickets after another 20 minutes of waiting in line and at that point walked right up and were able to get to the elevators.I want to stop here to have a little aside. I don’t know who started the rumor that the arch ride is scary but it is not. You do sit in a small pod, but it like the accent on a roller coaster to the top of the first drop and an elevator with no windows outside. Nothing to be afraid of here if you aren’t claustrophobic. If you are afraid of small spaces, stay clear of this ride. Once you get to the top, you walk up 10 to 30 stairs depending on which car you were in (lower the number the less stairs you climb) and you are then at the top in a decent sized room where you look out the windows. Beautiful view of the city. I don’t typically like heights, but this felt like being inside a building and not hang out on a roof. Here is the view from the arch: Related Tags: Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives, St. Louis, Vacation

  • Preparing a Universal App for iPhone SDK 3.2

    - by user133611
Hi all, I am working on a universal app, I used UISplitViewController in doing iPad application. I followed the Universal app guidelines i.e, i keep base SDK as 3.2, iPhone Target OS ad iPhone OS 3.1.3, Taget device as iPhone/iPad. And i used "Adding Runtime Checks for Newer Symbols" for UISplitViewController and UIPopOverController. Class splitVCClass = NSClassFromString(@"UISplitViewController"); if (splitVC) { UISplitViewController* mySplitViewController = [[splitVCClass alloc] init]; // Configure the split view controller. } I used this in .m files I declared UIPopOverController in .h files also "dyld: Symbol not found: _OBJC_CLASS_$_UIPopoverController Referenced from: /var/mobile/Applications/9E0CE75F-D2A9-4132-AE56-1780928BCF21/UniversalTasks.app/UniversalTasks Expected in: /System/Library/Frameworks/UIKit.framework/UIKit in /var/mobile/Applications/9E0CE75F-D2A9-4132-AE56-1780928BCF21/UniversalTasks.app/UniversalTasks" What i have to do can any one help me out

  • Resulting .exe from PyInstaller with wxPython crashing

    - by Helgi Hrafn Gunnarsson
I'm trying to compile a very simple wxPython script into an executable by using PyInstaller on Windows Vista. The Python script is nothing but a Hello World in wxPython. I'm trying to get that up and running as a Windows executable before I add any of the features that the program needs to have. But I'm already stuck. I've jumped through some loops in regards to MSVCR90.DLL, MSVCP90.DLL and MSVCPM90.DLL, which I ended up copying from my Visual Studio installation (C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\VC\redist\x86\Microsoft.VC90.CRT). As according to the instructions for PyInstaller, I run: Command: Configure.py Output: I: computing EXE_dependencies I: Finding TCL/TK... I: could not find TCL/TK I: testing for Zlib... I: ... Zlib available I: Testing for ability to set icons, version resources... I: ... resource update available I: Testing for Unicode support... I: ... Unicode available I: testing for UPX... I: ...UPX available I: computing PYZ dependencies... So far, so good. I continue. Command: Makespec.py -F guitest.py Output: wrote C:\Code\PromoUSB\guitest.spec now run Build.py to build the executable Then there's the final command. Command: Build.py guitest.spec Output: checking Analysis building Analysis because out0.toc non existent running Analysis out0.toc Analyzing: C:\Python26\pyinstaller-1.3\support\_mountzlib.py Analyzing: C:\Python26\pyinstaller-1.3\support\useUnicode.py Analyzing: guitest.py Warnings written to C:\Code\PromoUSB\warnguitest.txt checking PYZ rebuilding out1.toc because out1.pyz is missing building PYZ out1.toc checking PKG rebuilding out3.toc because out3.pkg is missing building PKG out3.pkg checking ELFEXE rebuilding out2.toc because guitest.exe missing building ELFEXE out2.toc I get the resulting 'guitest.exe' file, but upon execution, it "simply crashes"... and there is no debug info. It's just one of those standard Windows Vista crashes. The script itself, guitest.py runs just fine by itself. It only crashes as an executable, and I'm completely lost. I don't even know what to look for, since nothing I've tried has returned any relevant results. Another file is generated as a result of the compilation process, called 'warnguitest.txt'. Here are its contents. • Need to get .obj file names of Executable(which one is crrently executing) at runtime programaticall

    - by Usman
Suppose I have a VC++ project contains no of(say e.g 5) Source files(.cpp files),it will generate 5 .obj files(obj files corresponding to my .cpp's files not all kernel and OS layers including .obj files) e.g my project includes xyz_1.cpp,xyz_2.cpp,xyz_3.cpp,xyz_4.cpp,it will corresponds 4 respective .objs. By programtaically HOW CAN I TAKE AND GET THE NAMES OF THESE 4 .OBJ files at runtime(On run time I need to check how many obj files & names of those objs). REMEMBER I DON'T NEED ALL KERNEL AND OS LAYER .OBJS I ONLY NEED OBJS OF MY .CPPs. Regards Usman

  • SSRS 2005 - Usability analysis - Is SSRS a good option for this scenario?

    - by Sach
How practical is it to consider SSRS 2005 or SSRS 2008 as a reporting solution for a report that has to show reports with millions of records (records vary from 3 to 10 million)? Is there any threshold on the size of report in SSRS? How do I know that for a huge report, wheather SSRS will consume the whole memory and start paging the operations to disk or it will give a memory leak error? Even if I keep on increasing the memory how can I be sure that certain memory will be sufficient for such huge reports for the report server? All the above questions are haunting me because I have a dedicated report server with a decent hardware and OS configuration (8 processors, 8GB RAM, 64 bit OS and 64 bit SQL Server 2005). Still my report with around 2 million records is taking more than 6 minutes and going from one page to another takes 3 minutes!!! My datasource is on separate server and when I execute only the stored proc there, it returns the results in less than 2 minutes.

  • Fix Icon Display Problems by Rebuilding the Windows 7 Thumbnail Cache

    - by The Geek
Have you ever been browsing through photos or videos on your PC, and noticed that the thumbnails weren’t showing up properly? Sometimes they get corrupted, and you can quickly rebuild them to fix the problem. Just for some background, let’s walk through what we’re talking about. Normally, when you’re browsing around your files, you’ll see thumbnails for pictures and videos that you are viewing. These thumbnails are all generated, and stored in a cache to make browsing files faster. But sometimes… the cache gets corrupted, and we need to rebuild them. Here’s an example of what happens when it goes out of whack… Rebuilding the Windows 7 Thumbnail Cache All you have to do is open up Disk Cleanup through the start menu search box (just type in disk cleanup to find it) Just make sure that Thumbnails is checked, and then click OK to run through the cleaning process. • Python's subprocess.Popen object hangs gathering child output when child process does not exit

    - by Daniel Miles
When a process exits abnormally or not at all, I still want to be able to gather what output it may have generated up until that point. The obvious solution to this example code is to kill the child process with an os.kill, but in my real code, the child is hung waiting for NFS and does not respond to a SIGKILL. #!/usr/bin/python import subprocess import os import time import signal import sys child_script = """ #!/bin/bash i=0 while [ 1 ]; do echo "output line $i" i=$(expr $i \+ 1) sleep 1 done """ childFile = open("/tmp/childProc.sh", 'w') childFile.write(child_script) childFile.close() cmd = ["bash", "/tmp/childProc.sh"] finish = time.time() + 3 p = subprocess.Popen(cmd, stdout=subprocess.PIPE, stderr=subprocess.PIPE, stdin=subprocess.PIPE) while p.poll() is None: time.sleep(0.05) if finish < time.time(): print "timed out and killed child, collecting what output exists so far" out, err = p.communicate() print "got it" sys.exit(0) In this case, the print statement about timing out appears and the python script never exits or progresses. Does anybody know how I can do this differently and still get output from my child processe

  • How to create a folder for each item in a directory?

    - by Adrian Andronic
I'm having trouble making folders that I create go where I want them to go. For each file in a given folder, I want to create a new folder, then put that file in the new folder. My problem is that the new folders I create are being put in the parent directory, not the one I want. My example: def createFolder(): dir_name = 'C:\\Users\\Adrian\\Entertainment\\Coding\\Test Folder' files = os.listdir(dir_name) for i in files: os.mkdir(i) Let's say that my files in that directory are Hello.txt and Goodbye.txt. When I run the script, it makes new folders for these files, but puts them one level above, in 'C:\Users\Adrian\Entertainment\Coding. How do I make it so they are created in the same place as the files, AKA 'C:\Users\Adrian\Entertainment\Coding\Test Folder'?

  • Stack Overflow problem in a recursive program in C

    - by Adi
    Hi all, I am getting a stack overflow in one of the recursive functions i am running.. Here is the code.. void* buddyMalloc(int req_size) { // Do something here return buddy_findout(original_index,req_size); // This is the recursive call } void *buddy_findout(int current_index,int req_size) { char *selected = NULL; if(front!=NULL) { if(current_index==original_index) { // Do something here return selected; } else { // Do Something here return buddy_findout(current_index+1,req_size); } } else { return buddy_findout(current_index-1,req_size); } } Consider the initial value of index to be 4. and it first do index-1 till it reaches 0 index. and then it comes back to index 4 by incrementing..This is wht i want to implement. But it gives a stack overflow with memory map in the command prompt : Here is the output from my shell : * glibc detected * ./473_mem: free(): invalid pointer: 0x00c274c0 * ======= Backtrace: ========= /lib/tls/i686/cmov/libc.so.6[0xb50ff1] /lib/tls/i686/cmov/libc.so.6[0xb526f2] /lib/tls/i686/cmov/libc.so.6(cfree+0x6d)[0xb557cd] ./473_mem[0x8048b44] ./473_mem[0x8048b74] ./473_mem[0x8048b74] ./473_mem[0x8048944] ./473_mem[0x8048c87] ./473_mem[0x8048d31] ./473_mem[0x8048f79] /lib/tls/i686/cmov/libc.so.6(__libc_start_main+0xe6)[0xafcb56] ./473_mem[0x8048671] ======= Memory map: ======== 0017c000-00198000 r-xp 00000000 08:01 5224 /lib/libgcc_s.so.1 00198000-00199000 r--p 0001b000 08:01 5224 /lib/libgcc_s.so.1 00199000-0019a000 rw-p 0001c000 08:01 5224 /lib/libgcc_s.so.1 00260000-00284000 r-xp 00000000 08:01 1927 /lib/tls/i686/cmov/libm-2.10.1.so 00284000-00285000 r--p 00023000 08:01 1927 /lib/tls/i686/cmov/libm-2.10.1.so 00285000-00286000 rw-p 00024000 08:01 1927 /lib/tls/i686/cmov/libm-2.10.1.so 006cd000-006e8000 r-xp 00000000 08:01 6662 /lib/ld-2.10.1.so 006e8000-006e9000 r--p 0001a000 08:01 6662 /lib/ld-2.10.1.so 006e9000-006ea000 rw-p 0001b000 08:01 6662 /lib/ld-2.10.1.so 00aa9000-00aaa000 r-xp 00000000 00:00 0 [vdso] 00ae6000-00c24000 r-xp 00000000 08:01 1900 /lib/tls/i686/cmov/libc-2.10.1.so 00c24000-00c25000 ---p 0013e000 08:01 1900 /lib/tls/i686/cmov/libc-2.10.1.so 00c25000-00c27000 r--p 0013e000 08:01 1900 /lib/tls/i686/cmov/libc-2.10.1.so 00c27000-00c28000 rw-p 00140000 08:01 1900 /lib/tls/i686/cmov/libc-2.10.1.so 00c28000-00c2b000 rw-p 00000000 00:00 0 08048000-0804a000 r-xp 00000000 00:14 2176 /media/windows-share/OS/Project2/473_mem 0804a000-0804b000 r--p 00001000 00:14 2176 /media/windows-share/OS/Project2/473_mem 0804b000-0804c000 rw-p 00002000 00:14 2176 /media/windows-share/OS/Project2/473_mem 08483000-084a4000 rw-p 00000000 00:00 0 [heap] b7600000-b7621000 rw-p 00000000 00:00 0 b7621000-b7700000 ---p 00000000 00:00 0 b7716000-b7819000 rw-p 00000000 00:00 0 b7827000-b782a000 rw-p 00000000 00:00 0 bfb96000-bfbab000 rw-p 00000000 00:00 0 [stack] Aborted Thanks in advance adi

  • Project Active Executable can no longer be iPhone 3.2

    - by Rudiger
I don't know how much you can help me because its under the NDA, but I recently updated to the OS 4 beta 3 xcode version. My project worked fine under 3.2 but under 4.0 parts are a not quite right I assume because it is still being developed. Every other installation of the beta sdk I could go into the project settings and select the iPhone 3.2 sdk and then change the target iPhone OS in the top left of Xcode but not this one. If I select 3.2 it still loads on 4.0 it seems I only have the 4.0 simulator. Under Active Target there is only 4.0. Any ideas how to get the 3.2 Simulator back?

  • Raphael js library: problems with animateAlong in IE7

    - by Andrei
Hi there, I'm having trouble making a simple shape move along a path in IE7 (the only version of IE I tried, actually). The following code works fine in chrome and firefox, but not IE. I couldn't find an obvious reason, has anybody seen something similar? canvas.path(rPath.path).attr("stroke", "blue"); var circle = canvas.circle(rPath.startX, rPath.startY, 5); circle.animateAlong(rPath.path, 3000, true); My rPath variable has the path and the starting point coordinates. Microsoft script debugger points to this line as the one where the code breaks: os.left != (t = x - left + "px") && (os.left = t); (line 2131 inside the uncompressed raphael.js script file, inside Element[proto].setBox = function (params, cx, cy) {...}) Any ideas? Any experience (good or bad) with raphael's animateAlong in IE7? TIA, Andrei

  • Python: shutil.rmtree fails on Windows with 'Access is denied'

So the question is: what is the simplest workaround/fix to get around this problem - given that my intention is to do an equivalent of rm -rf build/ but on Windows? (without having to use third-party tools like unxutils or cygwin - as this code is targeted to be run on a bare Windows install with Python 2.6 w/ PyWin32 installed)

  • FCGI htaccess handler

    - by sharvey
I'm trying to setup django on a shared hosting provider. I followed the instructions on http://helpdesk.bluehost.com/index.php/kb/article/000531 and almost have it working. The problem I'm facing now is that the traffic is properly routed throught the fcgi file, but the file itself shows up as plain text in the browser. If I run ./mysite.fcgi in the ssh shell, I do get the default django welcome page. my .htaccess is: AddHandler fastcgi-script .fcgi RewriteEngine On RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f RewriteRule ^(.*)$ mysite.fcgi/$1 [QSA,L] and mysite.fcgi: #!/usr/bin/python2.6 import sys, os os.environ['DJANGO_SETTINGS_MODULE'] = "icm.settings" from django.core.servers.fastcgi import runfastcgi runfastcgi(method="threaded", daemonize="false") thanks.

  • ConnectionKit & iPhone SDK

    - by Wilco
I'm still getting my feet wet with the iPhone SDK, but I'm wondering if it would be possible to get the ConnectionKit framework working for an iPhone app. I know it was developed for the desktop OS, so I'm not sure what sort of dependencies it has and whether or not it could be shoehorned into the iPhone OS. In my case, I would like to use its FTP functionality, though having access to this entire framework could prove useful for future projects as well. Any ideas or experience trying this? In case it helps, here's the official ConnectionKit site: http://opensource.utr-software.com/connection/

  • Using python to play two sine tones at once

    - by Alex
    I'm using python to play a sine tone. The tone is based off the computer's internal time in minutes, but I'd like to simultaneously play one based off the second for a harmonized or dualing sound. This is what I have so far; can someone point me in the right direction? from struct import pack from math import sin, pi import time def au_file(name, freq, dur, vol): fout = open(name, 'wb') # header needs size, encoding=2, sampling_rate=8000, channel=1 fout.write('.snd' + pack('>5L', 24, 8*dur, 2, 8000, 1)) factor = 2 * pi * freq/8000 # write data for seg in range(8 * dur): # sine wave calculations sin_seg = sin(seg * factor) fout.write(pack('b', vol * 127 * sin_seg)) fout.close() t = time.strftime("%S", time.localtime()) ti = time.strftime("%M", time.localtime()) tis = float(t) tis = tis * 100 tim = float(ti) tim = tim * 100 if __name__ == '__main__': au_file(name='timeSound1.au', freq = tim, dur=1000, vol=1.0) import os os.startfile('timeSound1.au')

  • Windows Vista, Default Programs API, file format associations, and (un)installers - explosive mix!

    - by Alex T.
My application is a rather well behaved Windows citizen, so when I ported it to Windows Vista/7 I replaced my custom file format association code with support for the Default Programs API. However I ran into a problem when trying to make uninstaller for my application - there seems to be no way to remove file format associations via Default Programs API. I tried to call IApplicationAssociationRegistration::ClearUserAssociations but it actually removes all associations, including the ones for other applications - completely restoring default state of the OS (which is of course unacceptable). I tried to call IApplicationAssociationRegistration::SetAppAsDefault to return file format associations to the previous "owner" - but it does not help, because my application handles many unique file formats which the OS does not support and there is no previous "owners". And Windows does not allow to pass empty strings to SetAppAsDefault... So what do I do? Any good solutions?

  • Flash files are playing laggy /Jerky in screensaver

    - by yogesh-chhabra
I have developed a screen saver for MAC OS X. Screen saver plays flash files. Whene I run screen saver on display resolution higher than 1300 X 1000 then flash files play very jerky / laggy. When I run it in low resolution then files play fine.Even flash files are playing fine in desktop application. This problem is more on 10.6 Snow Leopard. I am unable to find out the reason whether it is OS screensaver engine problem or flash files problem. I know rendering increases on high resolution but there should be solution for this problem

  • Handling database failover for Rails applications on FreeBSD

    - by bianster
I'm working on implementing database (Postgresql) failover for a Rails app that runs with Passenger/FreeBSD. Due to certain constraints regarding the server OS, it's necessary to continue using FreeBSD (as opposed to say, Ubuntu). I'm finding it to be quite a challenge to have failover handled within the Rails application, by way of a customised database adapter due to the fact that this application will be load-balanced between several webservers, and the multiple Rails processes that Passenger spawned in each webserver. I previously looked at setting up Pacemaker/Corosync to manage database server failover on a common IP but unfortunately I wasn't able to get past building the packages on FreeBSD. It does work rather well on Ubuntu 10.04 but I'm not likely to be able to use Ubuntu due to the OS constraints. I'm considering a custom witness daemon that simply pings the primary DB server, and this witness daemon switches all the webservers to the standby DB server when the primary becomes uncontactable (permanently/temporarily), to avoid split-brain. Though I would really like to know if there is a way to get Pacemaker(or something similar) to do the switch on FreeBSD.

  • WPF or WinForms for Game Development and learning resources?

    - by Stephen Lee Parker
I'm looking to create a game framework for my own personal use... I want to use WPF, but I'm unsure if that is a wise choice... The games I will be writing should not require high performance graphics, so I am hoping to build on native classes... I do not want to rely on external DLL's unless I generate them myself. The games will be for young children, say 4 to 8. Most will be learning puzzles or simple shooters. The most advanced will be a platform game (non-scrolling screen like the old Atari Miner 2049er game). I think I know how to write something like the old Atari Chopper Command (partially written and my 4 year old loves it, but I used WinForms and GDI), Pac-Man, Tetris, Astroids, Space Invaders, Slider Puzzle, but I do not really know how to write the platform game... In my mind, I'm getting caught in collision detection and how to make a character jump and how to make a character walk up a slope or steps... Can anyone point me to information on developing a platform game in C#? Would you suggest WinForms or WPF for game development? I'm not looking for great graphics and speed, just entertaining game play...
