• Any clever way to fix 'string or binary data would be truncated' warning with LINQ

  Is there a clever way to determine which field is causing 'string or binary data would be truncated' with LINQ. I've always ended up doing it manually by stepping through a debugger, but with a batch using 'SubmitChanges' I have to change my code to inserting a single row to find the culprit in a batch of rows. Am I missing something or in this day and age do I really have to still use a brute force method to find the problem. Please dont give me advice on avoiding this error in future (unless its something much cleverer than 'validate your data'). The source data is coming from a different system where I dont have full control anyway - plus I want to be lazy. PS. Does SQL Server 2008 actually tell me the field name. Please tell me it does! I'll upgrade!

• MySQL is returning an "column ambiguous" error when it used to work before I upgraded...

  I recently upgraded MySQL to 5.1.41. Before the upgrade the following SQL worked (or at least I thought I remembered it working...it has been a few weeks since designing this...). Now the SQL gives me an error stating that the "archived" column is ambiguous. How can I write this differently, or is there a different problem I'm not aware of? I simply want to return the "unit_id", "lease_count" (stored in another table with a unit_id that should correspond with the "a.unit_id"), and "lease_archived_count (stored in another table with a unit_id that should correspond with the "a.unit_id"). Im stuck with this two (but also open for other suggestions) For YUI Charts : Pro : - Very robust and configurable Cons : - Uses flash 9 , which might potentially be inaccessible for users without up to date flash version - Does not support export to image (for flash versions < 10 only) For Google Visualization API pros: - small file size for the libraries, - can be exported to static image charts (via separate API call) Cons - limited configuration options So there, please help me decide. YUI charts has the edge over configuration options but Google Visualization API has the edge in terms of accessibility as it uses SVG to render the grapsh instead of Flash. For users that are hand-cuffed by corporate IT prohibitions , they cant just upgrade their Flash version and the page will not work. Thanks!

  I am trying to upgrade my iPhone app to use the new facebook graph api. One thing I cannot find is how to find out if the current user connected from my app to facebook is a fan of my facebook page - (i.e. in the new paradigm - whether the user likes my page) In the Rest Api there was a function isFan, but not in the Graph. I can get all items the user likes and search whether one of them is my page, but certainly there must be an easier way instead of going trough thousands of records each time I must check whether he is a fan, right? If someone already figured it out how to do that from their new docs, I'll really appreciate if you share it with me.

• Is it possible to use DLR in a .NET 3.5 website project?

  I'm trying to evaluate an expression stored in a database i.e. "if (Q1 ==2) {result = 3.1;} elseif (Q1 ==3){result=4.1;} else result = 5.9;" Rather than parsing it myself I'm trying to use the DLR. I'm using version .92 from the Codeplex repository and my solution is a .NET 3.5 website; and I'm having conflicts between the System.Core and Microsoft.Scripting.ExtenstionAttribute .dll's. Error = { Description: "'ExtensionAttribute' is ambiguous in the namespace 'System.Runtime.CompilerServices'.", File: "InternalXmlHelper.vb" } At this time I cannot upgrade to .NET 4.0 and make significant use of the .net 3.5 features (so downgrading is not an option). Any help greatly appreciated.

• Vista not supporting trueSpeech!

  My web application has (server side) a wav file saved using truespeech and then a client (ie6, ie7) can ask to plat the file and the web server serves it.. All you need on xp is to have WMP 9 or higher and it all works. but on vista.. suddenly the vista client box can't play the file cause it doesn't support truespeech (some upgrade!) anyone has an idea of what should I do? You can suggest a way to make it work on the client (but in general, I don't like having to say that the solution includes installing anything on the client box) you can suggest I don't save the server side file in truespeech, and instead use something else (what?)

• Telerik RadAjaxManager and Mouse Events in Chrome

  Whenever I'm using Telerik's RadAjaxManager in Chrome, the events sent to any mouse events I'm using are passed as null. For instance, the following: <img id="Image1" src="image.gif" onclick="alert(event)" /> <rad:RadAjaxManager ID="RadAjaxManager1" runat="server"> <AjaxSettings> </AjaxSettings> </rad:RadAjaxManager> Alerts null when clicking the image. This does not happen in IE or FF. The version of the RadAjaxManager is 1.8.5.0. I'm guessing the problem does not occur in later versions, but an upgrade is not an option at the moment. I tried Telerik's support forum, but they didn't really provide any answer. What could cause such a problem? And how can it be dealt with?

• How do you deal with the conflict between ActiveSupport::JSON and the JSON gem?

  I am stumped with this problem. ActiveSupport::JSON defines to_json on various core objects and so does the JSON gem. However, the implementation is not the same -- the ActiveSupport version takes arguments and the JSON gem version doesn't. I installed a gem that required the JSON gem and my app broke. The issue is that I'm using to_json in a controller that returns a list of objects, but I want to control which attributes are returned. When code anywhere in my system does require 'json' I get this error message: TypeError: wrong argument type Hash (expected Data) I tried a couple of things that I read online to fix it, but nothing worked. I ended up re-writing the gem to use ActiveSupport::JSON.decode instead of JSON.parse. This works but it's not sustainable...I can't be forking gems every time I want to use a gem that requires the JSON gem. Update: The best solution of this problem is to upgrade to Rails 2.3 or higher, which fixed it.

  Lately, I've been cleaning up some some C code that runs on an ARM7 controller. In some situations (upgrade, fatal error, etc...) the program will perform a reset. Presently it just jumps to 0 and assumes that the start-up code will reinitialize everything correctly. It got me to thinking about what would be the best procedure a la "Leave No Trace" for an ARM reset. • How to do 'git status' on untracked directory?

  I have 6,000 untracked files in one subdirectory and I'm constructing .gitignore files to filter out the unwanted ones. I'm testing my gitignore filters as I go by running 'git status'. However, I have a larger number of untracked other files in a different subdirectory, so 'git status' shows all of those too, which makes it very hard to see what the .gitignore rules are doing. If the files were tracked, then I could just do 'git status .' and it would restrict the git-status output to only those files in the current directory, but because the current directory and all its contents are untracked, 'git status .' returns "error: pathspec . did not match any file(s) known to git." I'm using git-1.6.6.1 for this, although interestingly my testing shows that git-1.7.1 (on a different system) does actually let you do git-status on an untracked directory. Unfortunately I can't upgrade git on this system. Is there a known workaround for -1.6.6.1?

  Hi experts, Currently we are studying the java based tool which is primararily Reporting tool.It was developed in 2000/2001 period and uses many open source libraries like Apache Avalon/Mx4J.Adaptor/edu.Oswego(java concurrent package) etc. Tool uses jdk 1.3.1 and goal is to upgrade to jdk 1.5.We have also been asked to remove these 'outdated' packages and replace by standard java packages if possible. Unfortunately we have the code available for study but lacks any documentation and really difficult to track the flow(Total number of classes written might be more than 1000) during debugging. • How to disable JSR-303 Hibernate Validation in Spring3

  After putting hibernate-validator.jar and javax.validation-api.jar in my classpath the org.springframework.dao.DataIntegrityViolationException is replaced by org.hibernate.exception.ConstraintViolationException and this is causing a lot of issues. I have to put this two jars to be able to upgrade Jersey to 2.4, it has dependency on these two jars. Putting these properties into hibernate.properties file doesn't help, hibernate simply ignores them but it loads the properties on start-up loaded properties from resource hibernate.properties: {hibernate.validator.apply_to_ddl=false,hibernate.validator.autoregister_listeners=false etc} javax.persistence.validation.mode=none hibernate.validator.autoregister_listeners=false hibernate.validator.apply_to_ddl=false I am using Spring 3.2.4 with SessionFactory and mapping resources from hbm.xml files with constraints in it, hibernate 3.6.9.final, hibernate-validator 5.0.final, javax.validator-api 1.1.0.Final I just can't figure out how to disable hibernate validation, any help will be much appreciated.

  I have a Visual Studio 2003 web service project that I have to upgrade to Visual Studio 2008. After I have run the conversion wizard, I get this message: You have completed the first step in converting your Visual Studio .NET 2003 web project. To complete the conversion, please select your project in the Solution Explorer and choose the 'Convert to Web Application' context menu item. I got this message with another project, which was originally a "web site", rather than an ASP.NET "web application". It made sense to in that case (sort of). Why, however, would I not just want to have this project remain a web service project? Additionally, when I follow the instructions and select "Convert to Web Application" from the context menu, I don't get any feedback that anything has changed. Should it have? If so, what?

• Loading tables dynamically with NHibernate

  I'm working on a project that requires me to load tables based on table names stored in another table. More tables will be added to the DB (and by someone else), so creating NHibernate mapping files for each table isn't an option. Does anyone know if it is possible to load tables dynamically using NHibernate? Edit: I should add that I'm on .NET 2.0, so I can't use Fluent NHibernate. Thanks for the suggestion though guys. I will use that as evidence in convincing my associates to upgrade.

• WCF RIA Services v1.0 Timeouts

  I have a RIA service methods which return quite a large amount of (binary) data to my silverlight application. The methods themselves (database access etc) complete quickly, but since I upgraded to v1.0 from the RC2 I've been experiencing timeouts, even when I limit the data returned to the smallest objects. Debug shows the method returning, then 20-30 seconds later the silverlight "method complete" event will fire. There is not enough data to cause that much lag. Could anyone suggest why this might be? I've been unable to find any breaking changes documentation specific to the RC2 = 1.0 upgrade. Trying to eliminate any other possible causes also, but this is literally a case of worked before the install, doesn't work now! (also upgraded silverlight 4 tools for vs).

But it throws error as follows: XML verification failed for https://dl-ssl.google.com/android/repository/repository.xml. Error: cvc-elt.1: Cannot find the declaration of element 'sdk:sdk- repository'. Failed to fetch URL I tried "http" instead of https, but still getting the same error. I don't know why such crap error comes. If i see Android website, http://developer.android.com/intl/zh-CN/sdk/index.html its confusing. • WiX, how to prevent files from uninstalling though we forgot to set Permanent="yes"

  We have a product installer created with Wix, containing a program package ("V1") and some configuration files. Now, we are going to make a major upgrade with a new product code, where the old version of the product is uninstalled and "V2" is installed. What we want is to save one of the configuration files from uninstalling, since it is needed for the V2, too. Unfortunately, we forgot to set the Permanent="yes" option when we delivered V1 (read this question for more information). Here comes the question: is there an easy way of preventing the uninstall of the file anyhow? Of course, we could add a custom action to the script to backup the file before uninstallation, and another custom action to restore it afterwards, but IMHO that seems to be overkill for this task, and might interfere with other parts of the MSI registration process.

• Automatic Hudson CI setup and plugin updates through apt?

  Hi! We've used Hudson for quite a while to implement a CI server with all the bells and whistles. The setup is quite straight forward, when installing from the provided RPMs and Debs, but through googling I haven't been able to figure out whether the plugins are installable using apt/rpm or some other package manager? The reason is that I would like to create a (meta)package for Ubuntu which would install and also update both Hudson and all the plugins through the normal upgrade mechanism. At the same time I could create a template setup for other projects, say JavaEE project needs git, cobertura and Chuck Norris plugins, while my Python project needs plugins XXX and YYY. Anybody got such a setup? As a workaround I figured setting up a number of Maven POMs, which would do the init, and later upgrades, but I feel this would require more scripting on the side, which I'm not very eager to do. Any other suggestions for this would also be appreciated.

  I would like to install VSS 2005 so I can work on a project that is stored under it. Does anyone have any idea where the VSS 2005 client can be obtained? It does not appear to be on my VS2005 install disc (although that is for Team Suite). I cannot get any help from Google. I have an MSDN license (AA edition) but it doesn't seem to be there. This is a real product right? Just to clarify preemptively based on some of the discussions I see on Google when I search for things like "VSS 2005," I am aware of the flaws in VSS and I still need to get it working; I am not interested in converting the project to Subversion; I am not able to transfer it to TFS; I am not able to upgrade the project to VS2008. • Why doesn't MySQL support millisecond precision?

  So I just found the most frustrating bug ever in MySQL. Apparently the TIMESTAMP field, and supporting functions do not support any greater precision than seconds!? So I am using PHP and Doctrine, and I really need those microseconds (I am using the actAs: [Timestampable] property). I found a that I can use a BIGINT field to store the values. But will doctrine add the milliseconds? I think it just assigns NOW() to the field. I am also worried the date manipulation functions (in SQL) sprinkled through the code will break. I also saw something about compiling a UDF extension. This is not an acceptable workaround because I or a future maintainer will upgrade and poof, change gone. Has anyone found a suitable workaround?

• What version of Windows 7 for ASP.NET development on Visual Studio

  Hi, I am about to upgrade my pc, and operating system at the same time. I was wondering what version of Windows 7 to get pre-installed, given that I want to do some ASP.NET development using Visual Studio. Specifically : Will all versions of Windows 7 run an IIS server & be suitable for ASP.NET development ? Are all good for running SQL Server etc ? Will Windows 7 have any probs running old versions of Visual Studio (Ie. 2003 & 2005 versions). Are there any other things I need to consider ? I'm probably going for the 32 bit version of Windows 7.
