• Correctly configure nameservers with cPanel

  I just bought a VPS with cPanel/WHM. My hosting provider gave me 3 dedicated IP addresses with my plan. I read on the internet that I should use 2 IPs for my nameservers and the other one as the main IP for all my shared accounts. Could you tell me why I should do that ? What are the advantages of using IP addresses only for nameservers and another one only for my shared accounts instead of using the same IP for all my nameservers and shared account ? I'm asking because I don't want to use an IP for nothing. Thank you.

• Drive Shows No Files But Half Space Gone

  I have a 500 GB USB drive. When I go to Windows Explorer or Finder, the drive shows that about half the drive is free. However, when I open either drive in Windows 7 or OS X, no files how up. I have tried to look at the files through the command line and nothing shows. A while back, I hooked it up to my MacBookPro and there was a quick message that said the drive was not ejected properly, blah, blah. And of course I did not read the message and hit OK. It there any way to get back my files from the drive?

• Spoof user agent for GoGo Inflight Internet?

  Is it possible to trick the GoGo Inflight WiFi on airlines into thinking that you have a mobile device instead of a laptop? It seems like most airlines that offer in flight wireless these days use GoGo. They offer different pricing for mobile and laptops. It seems like they are checking the browser's user agent. Out of curiosity, is it possible to use a Firefox extension like this one to spoof the user-agent and allow a laptop to access the internet under a GoGo mobile plan? How would GoGo handle something like an IMAP email client, like Thunderbird. Do IMAP clients have a user-agent field as well that would normally identify whether the mail client is running on a laptop or mobile device?

• Performing Aggregate Functions on Multi-Million Row Tables

  I'm having some serious performance issues with a multi-million row table that I feel I should be able to get results from fairly quick. Here's a run down of what I have, how I'm querying it, and how long it's taking: I'm running SQL Server 2008 Standard, so Partitioning isn't currently an option I'm attempting to aggregate all views for all inventory for a specific account over the last 30 days. • Slow file operations, possible I/O error but chkdsk says OK

  I've recently faced a strange problem. I use Directory Opus file manager that suddenly started to report an I/O error when trying to copy files onto one of my disks. The Windows Explorer did copy those files but it was extremely slow. I run chkdsk on this drive (ca. 300GB) and it took it over two days to complete! However it reported no errors found. I run Hard Disk Sentinel that says the drive is OK. But the files still read and write extremely slow! Can anyone advise me what to do? I have a spare space I am copying my files for backup now but should I get rid of this disk? Or can I try to "heal" it somehow? Many thanks for your ideas!

• Kanji characters appear as boxes

  i'm having trouble with the display of japanese characters on Windows 8 Pro (English, 64-bit, updated regularly). They appear as boxes (picture) in windows explorer, windows menus (even in the language settings of control panel), iTunes and nearly everywhere else, besides web browsers. I was using windows 7 until now, and it didn't have any of these problems, and i'm using the same applications now, as i was using in windows 7. Sometimes (!) when i restart the machine the problem goes away, but that isn't a real solution. What i've tried so far: added japanese language to windows of course installed/uninstalled/reinstalled japanase language pack (didn't have any impact though) i've read in one of these superuser topics a possible solution, when i had to create a txt file on the desktop with a kanji in the filename - that also didn't work (but i honestly hope that hacking and tweaking an operation system released in 2012 can't be the solution to display kanjis..) Please give me any ideas, i'm a bit hopeless here, and don't want to spend my life installing operation systems..

Core 2 Duo @ 2.4 GHz with 8 GB RAM and integrated graphics (Mac Book Pro 13") Core i7 @ 2.6 GHz with 4 GB RAM and 512 MB dedicated graphics (Mac Book Pro 15") I plan to run Windows x64 in the VM with SQL Server 2008, Visual Studio 2010, and SharePoint 2010. I am planning to run VMWare Fusion v3. I also didn't know if a dedicated graphics card makes a difference when using a Virtual Machine. Thank you.

• Hosting discussion forums on Windows 2008 Server / IIS, what software to use?

  A plan to look into hosting discussion forums related to our product, on our own servers, has arisen, and I can't seem to find any pure .NET or Windows-based discussion forums. Since we're a pure Windows-based company, installing something that requires MySQL or Linux is going to require administration knowledge we don't currently have. What are our options? Every site I find that shows how to set up discussion forums on IIS involves just taking one of the many LAMP-based ones and tweaking IIS to run PHP or similar to run it. Isn't there a .NET-based discussion forum software? Free or not doesn't matter at this stage, right now we're just looking for options.

• cannot connect to MS FTP 7.5 on Windows 2008 on Amazon EC2 instance

  I have just installed the MS FTP 7.5 upgrade on my Windows 2008 Server (Service Pack 2) running on an Amazon EC2 instance. In the FTP Firewall Support settings for the server in IIS Manager I have set up the passive port range 45001 - 45005 and also set the External Firewall IP address to match the assigned Amazon Elastic IP address. Using the AWS Console I changed the Security Group for the server to allow access to the server through ports 21 and 45001 through 45005. Using an FTP client (either the command line FTP client or Windows Explorer) on the Amazon server I can connect to the FTP server but I cannot connect with an external FTP client. When I checked to see which ports were open on the server using Shields Up it shows that port 21 is open but ports 45001 to 45005 are closed. I assume I'm missing something. Any help greatly appreciated.

• Faster method for Matrix vector product for large matrix in C or C++ for use in GMRES

  I have a large, dense matrix A, and I aim to find the solution to the linear system Ax=b using an iterative method (in MATLAB was the plan using its built in GMRES). For more than 10,000 rows, this is too much for my computer to store in memory, but I know that the entries in A are constructed by two known vectors x and y of length N and the entries satisfy: A(i,j) = .5*(x[i]-x[j])^2+([y[i]-y[j])^2 * log(x[i]-x[j])^2+([y[i]-y[j]^2). MATLAB's GMRES command accepts as input a function call that can compute the matrix vector product A*x, which allows me to handle larger matrices than I can store in memory. To write the matrix-vecotr product function, I first tried this in matlab by going row by row and using some vectorization, but I avoid spawning the entire array A (since it would be too large). This was fairly slow unfortnately in my application for GMRES. My plan was to write a mex file for MATLAB to, which is in C, and ideally should be significantly faster than the matlab code. Please note that I skip the case i=j, since in that case the variable val will be a 0*log(0), which should be interpreted as 0 for me, so I just skip it. Is there a more efficient or faster way to write this? When I call this C function via the mex file in matlab, it is quite slow, slower even than the matlab method I used. This surprises me since I suspected that C code should be much faster than matlab. This is partly vectorized and only needs one for loop, so it makes some sense that it is faster. However, I was hoping I could go even faster with C+mex file. Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks! EDIT: I should be more clear. I am open to any faster method that can help me use GMRES to invert this matrix that I am interested in, which requires a faster way of doing the matrix vector product without explicitly loading the array into memory. • Recovering files that do not appear in the Recycle Bin, but are in the $Recycle.bin folder on external drive

  Problem: I have an NTFS external drive with a $Recycle.bin folder on the root (E:/$Recycle.bin/) that has about 70gb worth of data. For whatever reason, the folder is no longer a hidden system file and no Windows machine I have used the drive on will show the files in the actual Recycle Bin. What I Want To Do: I want to atleast view the recycle bin files from this external, and all of the help articles I have read just talk about deleting the folder all together. I plan on reformating the drive, but first I need to see if there are any important deleted files. What Didn't Work: Recuva - didn't see any of my files Resetting the external's Recycle Bin via command prompt and moving the old $Recycle.bin files into the new external $Recycle.bin folder (I didn't read this anywhere, just made it up on my own)

• How to get partition information from non-booting server?

  Need to manually rebuild a mirrored array on a server and am in the process of reinstalling SBS 2003 on it. However, it's a Dell server, and know that there's the Dell FAT32 diagnostics partition, a system partition, and a data partition, but do not know the size of each. Planning on reinstalling SBS 2003, all applications on the server, and then doing a System State restore, but figured that not having the correct partitions will cause some grief: am I right? Almost thinking that the size of the partitions shouldn't matter, but not positive. Question: should I care about the size of the partition? If so, how can I get this partition information from a non-booting drive? We have an Acronis image of the one working disk and the partitions are mounted/viewable in Explorer on a workstation, but I'm not sure where the Logical Disk Manager/Disk Management data is stored and/or if there's a way to retrieve it without having a working Windows installation.

• Apache on Win32: Slow Transfers of single, static files in HTTP, fast in HTTPS

  I have a weird problem with Apache 2.2.15 on Windows 2000 Server SP4. Basically, I am trying to serve larger static files, images, videos etc. The download seems to be capped at around 550kB/s even over 100Mbit LAN. I tried other protocols (FTP/FTPS/FTP+ES/SCP/SMB), and they are all in the multi-megabyte range. The strangest thing is that, when using Apache with HTTPS instead of HTTP, it serves very fast, around 2.7MByte/s! I also tried the AnalogX SimpleWWW server just to test the plain HTTP speed of it, and it gave me a healthy 3.3Mbyte/s. I am at a total loss here. I searched the web, and tried to change the following Apache configuration directives in httpd.conf, one at a time, mostly to no avail at all: SendBufferSize 1048576 #(tried multiples of that too, up to 100Mbytes) EnableSendfile Off #(minor performance boost) EnableMMAP Off Win32DisableAcceptEx HostnameLookups Off #(default) I also tried to tune the following registry parameters, setting their values to 4194304 in decimal (they are REG_DWORD), and rebooting afterwards: HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\AFD\Parameters\DefaultReceiveWindow HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\AFD\Parameters\DefaultSendWindow Additionally, I tried to install mod_bw, which sets the event timer precision to 1ms, and allows for bandwidth throttling. According to some people it boosts static file serving performance when set to unlimited bandwidth for everybody. Unfortunately, it did nothing for me. So: AnalogX HTTP: 3300kB/s Gene6 FTPD, plain: 3500kB/s Gene6 FTPD, Implicit and Explicit SSL, AES256 Cipher: 1800-2000kB/s freeSSHD: 1100kB/s SMB shared folder: about 3000kB/s Apache HTTP, plain: 550kB/s Apache HTTPS: 2700kB/s Clients that were used in the bandwidth testing: Internet Explorer 8 (HTTP, HTTPS) Firefox 8 (HTTP, HTTPS) Chrome 13 (HTTP, HTTPS) Opera 11.60 (HTTP, HTTPS) wget under CygWin (HTTP, HTTPS) FileZilla (FTP, FTPS, FTP+ES, SFTP) Windows Explorer (SMB) Generally, transfer speeds are not too high, but that's because the server machine is an old quad Pentium Pro 200MHz machine with 2GB RAM. However, I would like Apache to serve at at least 2Mbyte/s instead of 550kB/s, and that already works with HTTPS easily, so I fail to see why plain HTTP is so crippled. I am using a Kerio Winroute Firewall, but no Throttling and no special filters peeking into HTTP traffic, just the plain Firewall functionality for blocking/allowing connections. The Apache error.log (Loglevel info) shows no warnings, no errors. Also nothing strange to be seen in access.log. I have already stripped down my httpd.conf to the bare minimum just to make sure nothing is interfering, but that didn't help either. If you have any idea, help would be greatly appreciated, since I am totally out of ideas! Thanks! Edit: I have now tried a newer Apache 2.2.21 to see if it makes any difference. However, the behaviour is exactly the same. Edit 2: KM01 has requested a sniff on the HTTP headers, so here comes the LiveHTTPHeaders output (an extension to Firefox). The Output is generated on downloading a single file called "elephantsdream_source.264", which is an H.264/AVC elementary video stream under an Open Source license. I have taken the freedom to edit the URL, removing folders and changing the actual servers domain name to www.mydomain.com. • Anyone interested in obtaining a cable list from a visio Diagram? [closed]

  it's my first post here. Just wondering if anyone had to deal with the following problem - you have to install over say a 100 network elements and servers - cabling is done via contractors, so you need to provide them with an accurate, error-free cable list - your inputs are a set of detailed, port by port, visio diagrams. Prb is to obtain the cable list and get the cabling started while you're busy crafting the switch/routers configs. I coded a Visio plugin, which I plan to release under the GNU license, that returns a cable list from a diagram, and tested it on intermediate size infrastructure, 2K+ cables. It works well. The tool needs a little work to be user friendly, so before getting started, I wanted to know if that was worth the effort. I added delimiters part and when I tried running the query from phpmyadmin, Firefox went into not responding state. After that I started Internet Explorer and tried opening my pages which use the same database, it worked fine. However, I tried opening phpmyadmin and IE went into not responding state as well. I restarted both servers. Later restarted PC. Tried again but its same behavior. So whats wrong with this tiny little code ? Am I missing something which might be causing infinite loop ? Thanks

  From a Windows 2003 server machine I browsed the network to an XP client (\computername in Explorer) then double-clicked Printers and Faxes and then Add Printer. In the wizard, normally the second screen asks if you want to install a local printer or a network printer. Well, in this case, it seems to assume I want a local printer, because the second screen is what would normally be the third screen if you chose local printer and clicked Next. I want to install a network printer on a remote machine for its local users. Is this not possible? If not, why not?

  I have to configure an ubuntu hardy server network interface. The service hoster told me that this is the network data for the machine: IP Range: 111.111.200.74 to 111.111.200.78 Netmask: 255.255.255.248 Broadcast: 111.111.200.79 Gateway: 111.111.200.73 Subnet: 111.111.200.72/29 I am only using the first IP address. I will update the /etc/hosts file with 111.111.200.74, but I am still unsure how the /etc/network/interfaces file should be. This is my plan: auto lo iface lo inet loopback auto eth0 iface eth0 inet static address 111.111.200.74 netmask 255.255.255.248 network 111.111.200.??? broadcast 111.111.200.79 gateway 111.111.200.73 As you can see I don't know how to build the network line. How would I calculate the data for the network line and what is the result? (I changed the first 2 octets of the subnet, they are not "111.111" in the real setup.)

• iMac invalid memory access and then crash?

  My iMac G5 from a few years ago (the square white one) dies now, with a message about an invalid memory access. It goes straight to an Open Firmware prompt and doesn't even load the Mac OS at all. Am I correct in guessing that the memory is probably the issue, and that if I replace it, we may be able to boot again as normal? That's my gut feeling anyway, so I ordered some more memory and plan to swap it today. Any thoughts? Ideas?

• Bootcamp's "Use all F1, F2, etc. keys" switches back automatically

  I use Windows 7 in a Bootcamp partition on my iMac. I always check the option "Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys", and when it's checked, everything works great. But recently, something switches this setting back to 'unchecked' every few minutes. I constantly have to open the Boot Camp Control Panel, uncheck the checkbox, check it again and click on 'Apply'. And five minutes later, the F2 key again controls the brightness of the screen and not the renaming of files in Explorer. This is driving me mad. What could be the cause of this? Is there a keystroke to switch this feature?

• Create netbook recovery image without DVD burner (virtual burner?)

  I have a new Acer Aspire One which is asking to create a recovery DVD. It doesn't have a built in burner, and I don't have a USB burner. However I do have a large USB hard drive. Is there some way to get the recovery software to "burn" an image file instead of a real DVD? I know you can download a Linux recovery image, but the netbook comes with XP. I plan to install Linux on it but I'd like an XP recovery image just in case.

• How to best migrate one Windows 2008 R2 / SharePoint / Exchange / Terminal Services (All-in-one) int

  Hello, My client has one machine with Windows 2008 R2 and everything on it. By everything I mean AD, DNS, SharePoint 2010 Standard, Exchange 2010 Standard, Terminal Services, Office 2010 and a bunch of additional apps. Everything stands on I7 x 2 and 36gb ram for 7 people total. I've decided that we should virtualize it and split things into 4 VM's and keep host only with Hyper-V installed to host all the machines. What problems should I expect? What good advices can you give. My plan is that when i move everything to VM's i will move vm's to safe place and format the host as it has a lot of really bad things happening on it. But this also means that everything will be wiped from current solution so I have to be sure that Exchange etc will work when host gets wiped. MadBoy

• How to automatically enter username and password for network location in batch file?

  I have a batch file that copies files to a network location on WebDAV. The address looks something like this: \\xxxxxxxxx.net@SSL@2078\DavWWWRoot When I restart my computer, the batch file doesn't work and says "Access denied". Before a restart, it works, but it doesn't after the computer restarts. The problem is that it requires me to put in the username and password used to access the server. I have to browse to the server in File Explorer and sign in first. Even if I select the "Remember password" check box, it doesn't work. How can I get it to automatically sign in? I don't want to have to do this every time.

• Swapping 3Ware Raid Card - Best Procedure

  We have a server running an old firmware version and driver (just took this position) on the 3Ware 9650SE Raid Controller... We have been having issues with the server and seemed to have narrowed it down to the Raid Card... I will be replacing the Raid card with the same model of 3Ware 9650SE, however, the card ordered most likely will have newer firmware on it. I managed to backup all the data to a very large drive. My plan is to update the firmware/driver on the current setup (which is still booting) and verify that everything works.. Then throw in the new Raid Card, check the firmware version (not letting it post). And update to newest firmware if needed via Java management utility on the card? Is this the best route? Thanks!

But my job requires me to move every 3-4 months, so don't want to get a monitor that I will have to carry around all the time. My plan was to get the Mac Mini and use my Windows laptop as a monitor whenever I use the Mac Mini... But i am not sure if this is possible... Maybe some external card or something...? • Blocking a country (mass iP Ranges), best practice for the actual block

  Hi all, This question has obviously been asked many times in many different forms, but I can't find an actual answer to the specific plan I've got. We run a popular European Commercial deals site, and are getting a large amount of incoming registrations/traffic from countries who cannot even take part in the deals we offer (and many of the retailers aren't even known outside Western Europe). I've identified the problem area to block a lot of this traffic, but (as expected) there are thousands of ip ranges required. My question now (finally!). On a test server, I created a script to block each range within iptables, but the amount of time it took to add the rules was large, and then iptables was unresponsive after this (especially when attempting a iptables -L). What is the most efficient way of blocking large numbers of ip ranges: iptables? Or a plugin where I can preload them efficiantly? hosts.deny? .htaccess (nasty as I'd be running it in apache on every load balanced web server)? Cheers
