• Example applications and benefits of using "C" , "C++" or "Java"

  Ok, I'm revising for my upcoming year 2 exams on a CS course and its likely something like this will come up. my question is what is an ideal application that would especially benefit from the program features of each of the three languages? I have a vague idea but getting a second opinion could really help. JavaPortability, easy - good for GUIs. C++Fast but may requite significant changes in order to be moved from system to system, good for image processing. CI'm unsure here small embedded applications? Some clarification on this would be really appreciated, thanks again StackOverflow

• Simple Hash that is always equal between C# and Java

  I have a C# WebService and a (Java) Android Application. Is there a SIMPLE hash function that produces the same result between these two languages? The simplest C# hash is a String.GetHashCode(), but I can't replicate it in Java. The simplest Java hash is not simple at all. And I don't know if I can replicate it exactly in C#. In case it's relevant, I'm hashing passwords before sending it across the internet. I'm currently using Encode64, but that's obviously not secure since we can reverse it.

  Question: Where can I find the precedence of characters when sorting in MySQL, PHP, or just in general on Linux and Windows OS? For example, everybody knows that a comes before b when performing an ascending sort on a string in MySQL. But what about other characters? Does the dollar-sign $ come before asterisk * ? Does a space come before an exclamation-mark? etc... What dictates the sort order? Does it use underlying ascii / UTF-8 values? Is it different for different technologies? • replace \n and \r\n with <br /> in java

  This has been asked several times for several languages but I can't get it to work. I have a string like this String str = "This is a string.\nThis is a long string."; And I'm trying to replace the \n with <br /> using str = str.replaceAll("(\r\n|\n)", "<br />"); but the \n is not getting replaced. I tried to use this RegEx Tool to verify and I see the same result. The input string does not have a match for "(\r\n|\n)". What am i doing wrong ?

• How to test Language DLLs?

  Our application offer the user to display different languages if they have the approppriate Language DLL (say German.DLL, French.DLL, even Chinese.DLL). We have functional test to verify that those DLLs enable the right options in a Combobox and that choosing them will actually translate strings in the UI. I would like to know options to test this translation dll's more in depth, maybe ensuring that all the characters in the selected langauge (and in the file) can be correctly displayed, or that the internal structure of the DLL is consistent, there are no strings exceeding the limits that are expected of them, etc... Any suggestions on what to test and how to test it? Does anyone know specific problems that may arise and we should check? Thanks in advance.

  Does anyone know any site or book that presents problems like python challenge, but for C++? When I think python challenge, I do not mean only a set of problems to be solved with C++ (for that I could probably use the same problems of python challenge), but rather problems that will probably be best solved using C++ STL, special features of the language, etc. For example, there is one python challenge that is specifically designed to teach you how to use pickle, a serializing library for python. Until now, I only know programming contests problems, but they could also be solved with C, java or other languages.

  Beginners and professional, on blogs, in forums and chatrooms - people say it everywhere: C++ oh dear god no The short form of the question: For what reason is C++ so widely disliked and people are horrified by the imagination of using it for some project? I have been using a lot of different languages, including C++ by now, and I can only say that I really like it. I'm far more horrified by Delphi than by C++. Actually, I find it's an almost perfect, compiled language! I've been doing a lot of different projects in C++ as well, ranging from 3D video games to webservers and emulators for old video game consoles. And I still do not see the problem everyone else seems to have with it!

• Community based translating system

  Since we don't funds to hire translators for getting multiple languages translated we want the community to do the translation for us. Its a social network. I can't find any good open souce framework to auto do this. Thinking something like: User selects a language, system displays random sentences and user will translate it. Then other users can vote on how good it is. If it's 100 votes + with 95% yes then it becomes official. Site is in PHP. Any ideas?

• How to schedule hundreds of thousands of tasks?

  We have hundreds of thousands of tasks that need to be run at a variety of arbitrary intervals, some every hour, some every day, and so on. The tasks are resource intensive and need to be distributed across many machines. Right now tasks are stored in a database with an "execute at this time" timestamp. To find tasks that need to be executed, we query the database for jobs that are due to be executed, then update the timestamps when the task is complete. Naturally this leads to a substantial write load on the database. As far as I can tell, we are looking for something to release tasks into a queue at a set interval. (Workers could then request tasks from that queue.) What is the best way to schedule recurring tasks at scale? For what it's worth we're largely using Python, although we have no problems using components (RabbitMQ?) written in other languages.

• C++ for small, individual projects (i.e. hobby programming)

  I recently started C++. I am using PHP right now and decided to take a look at C++. Web programming had me working with a couple of languages, with a couple of people. I wanted to do programming where I only had to bother with one language and create small utility apps (mostly not web-based). I wanted a compiled, strongly-type language without memorizing a tome of classes. Basically I wanted to learn C++ for the following: mobile programming (I don't ever want to go touching Java, and I don't have a Mac for Objective C or IPhone SDK) small desktop apps like DTRs, POSs creating small desktop-based games creating small Air-like applications that can access the web for additional content I heard that C++ is not beginner-friendly and is mostly used for huge projects with lots of calculations and fine details (like 3D games). Is it practical or even possible for me to use C++ for the above cases? (Sorry, I haven't delved on C++ that much yet, so aside from "huge, monolithic project", I don't know any other uses for it)

• Strange Puzzle - Invalid memory access of location

  The error message I'm getting consistently is: Invalid memory access of location 0x8 rip=0x10cf4ab28 What I'm doing is making a basic stock backtesting system, that is iterating huge arrays of stocks/historical data across various algorithms, using java + eclipse on the latest Mac Os X. I tracked down the code that seems to be causing it. A method that is used to get the massive arrays of data and is called thousands of times. Nothing is retained so I don't think there is a memory leak. However there seems to be a set limit of around 7000 times I can iterate over it before I get the memory error. The weird thing is that it works perfectly in debug mode. Does anyone know what debug mode does differently in Eclipse? Giving the jvm more memory doesn't help, and it appears to work fine using -xint.   Hello stackoverflow, I'm a "long time reader first time poster", glad to start participating in this forum. My experience is with Java, Python, and several audio programming languages; I'm quite new to the big bad web technologies: HTML/CSS/JavaScript. I'm making two personal sites right now and am wondering if I'm relying on JavaScript too much. I'm making a site where all pages have a bit of markup in common--stuff like the nav bar and some sliced background images--so I thought I'd make a pageInit() function to insert the majority of the HTML for me. This way if I make a change later, I just change the script rather than all the pages. I figure if users are paranoid enough to have JavaScript turned off, I'll give them an alert or something. Is this bad practice? Can JavaScript be overused? Thanks in advance.

• Best way to make a script to SSH?

  My university has quite a lot files (like past papers etc) which I need to be on the uni network to access them. I ssh, using port forwarding, into the network and set my browser (Firefox) to go through that port. I know it would be quite easy to write something in most languages that would enter the command into a terminal, but which language/method could I use to make this happen? I expect some sort of scripting language could but I really know nothing about them, but I'd be willing to learn one just to have a little fun with this. I'm using a cygwin terminal on Windows 7, if that will make a difference. To neaten up my question: Which language would be best to acheive the above effect? Not necessarily the best, just possible and relatively simple to learn. I used the word best so I suppose I'll put a subjective tag.

• How do you use the C language to produce a ruby gem?

  I would like to see some source code or maybe a link to some that gives at least a stub for writing ruby gems in the C languages (C++?? is that possible too?) Also, some of you may know that Facebook compiles some of their code natively as php extensions for better performance. Is anyone doing this in Rails? If so, what has been your experience with it? • XCode Project Code Changes Not Updating 100% After Save-Build-Run

  When I make code changes to my iPhone game project in XCode, and then do CMD-B + Enter, I expect the project to be saved, build and run on the simulator with the latest. What is happening though, sometimes, is that it doesn't pick up a small change I make unless I clean the project and then build. I'm a long time Java person and newish to C-based languages and it's compiler. Can someone explain to me what is cached after each build that does this and how to change my project settings to avoid having to clean everytime? Or tell me the bad news that this is part of C development? Not trying to bash it - I get compiled JSPs stuck in the working cache often in Java, too. :P

  This should be easy for many of you, but for me it's just another bit of rust needing to be chipped away as I get back into basic Java coding. Using bloody associative arrays for so long in other languages have turned me nice and spoiled. :P My problem is simple: I'm storing a set of objects, each containing a string and a number, in a list. I would like each object inserted into this list to be sorted alphabetically by its string. I would also like to be able to retrieve objects from the list by their string as well. I would like to do this as formally and/or efficiently as possible. Is there something already available in the Java standard libraries for this?

  Possible Duplicate: Staying Relevant As a Programmer As you all know in our line of work it is important to keep your self up to date with all of the technical progress that is being made out there. As a developer you have to be quick to grasp new programming languages and programming concepts as well as completely new technologies. I read about a guy who got fired at 50 years of age with tons of experience in some ancient technology and he now couldn't get a job anywhere because his experience wasn't in OOP or some other more modern concept. • Localized database strings

  I have a small Grails application that has the following domain: class Meal { String name String description String allergyNote } For localization purposes the three strings should now be available in multiple languages. For example, while an English user would see name="Steak", a Spanish user should see name="Filete" in the output. I was thinking of doing the following: class Language { String isoCode String languageName } class TranslatedString { Language language String translation } but I am not sure how to link the Meals with the TranslatedStrings as it is used for three members, also I would like to use it for other classes (not just Meal) as well (or do I need to have separated tables, i.e. a MealNameTranslated, MealDescriptionTranslated, etc tables?). I know this is probably a stupid question, but I am a beginner and have not been able to figure this out :-(

• Desired features for C++

  I am a full time C++ developer, and I really like the language. I think it is suited for almost any kind of application. Some people claim Java and C# are better suited for high level programming, but I'm not so sure about this. I have worked with all three languages, and when using C++, it happens only now and then I come across something that might be improved. What features would you like to see added to C++? I'm talking about big improvements, not details like typesafe enums.

  Hi! A newbie question. Do languages like e.g. Ruby (if running MRI, I mean not compiled to byte-code) run actually parsed everytime when an execution of e.g. method or loop body is needed? I mean, to execute a loop, you need to parse its body N times? I just always thought that all these programs are being parsed one time at the bootstrap - transformed in a 'strongly-typed' statements tree etc.. Is that not true?
