• No web browsers open on Windows XP

  I'm having a weird problem here. I upgraded a Windows XP computer from IE6 to IE8 yesterday and everything seemed to work normally until today. Now I can't open any browser on this computer. The computer had Google Chrome installed and it suddenly disappeared, I installed it again and now it dowsn't open either. I also installed Firefox and the same thing happened. The computer had no anti virus, I installed Ad-Aware, run a full scan and it detected some malware, but browsers are still not working Any ideas?

• IPv6 local address in hosts file

  I have set up a local domain on my Apache server. Then I added the following line in my /etc/hosts file ::1 exampledomain.local After I trying to navigate to it, (I tried Firefox and Chromium) I got a server not found error. Then I tried ping6 and it worked: dan@danny:~$ ping6 exampledomain.local PING exampledomain.local(exampledomain.local) 56 data bytes 64 bytes from exampledomain.local: icmp_seq=1 ttl=64 time=0.032 ms If I replace ::1 with 127.0.0.1 in my hosts file, it works fine. • Squid 2.7.STABLE3-4.1 as a transparent proxy on Ubuntu Server 9.04

  Can't get this to work at all! I'm trying to get this linux box to act as a transparent proxy and, with the help of DHCP, force everyone on the network to gate into the proxy. I have two ethernet connections, both to the same switch. And I'm trying to get 192.168.1.234 to become the default gateway. The actual WAN connection is to a gateway 192.168.1.1. eth0 is 192.168.1.234 eth1 is 192.168.1.2 Effectively I'm trying to make eth0 a LAN only interface and eth1 a WAN interface. I've oi should set the gateway for eth1 to point to 192.168.1.234 my squid.conf file has the following directives added at the bottom: nly set eth0 to have a gateway address in /etc/network/interfaces I'm not sure whether http_port 3128 transparent acl lan src 192.168.1.0/24 acl lh src 127.0.0.1/255.255.255.0 http_access allow lan http_access allow lh i've added the following routing commands: iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -i eth0 -p tcp -m tcp --dport 80 -j DNAT --to-destination 192.168.1.2:3128 iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -i eth1 -p tcp -m tcp --dport 80 -j REDIRECT --to-ports 3128 I set a computer with TCP settings 192.168.1.234 as the gateway and opened up google.com, but it comes up with a request error. • Ubuntu boots into command line instead of X.

  I posted this on the Ubuntu forums and they had no good answer. I hope you guys have a solution! On my relatively new install, it's booting into command line instead of X--again. This is the reason I reinstalled in the first place. This has happened to me three times now. So, I boot up and it gets past GRUB, past the glowing Ubuntu option, then it prompts me for my username, then password. I run: startx And that starts the GUI for about a minute, then it runs the GUI login system. To add to the mess, the network-applet is not shown in the panel. Additionally, Chrome will not launch (I ran Firefox from the terminal). What's the problem here?

  There is a bunch of browser add ons to either block particular websites (i.e. leechblock, chrome nanny or various OS specific solutions) or block the comment section of a website (i.e. commentBlocker). However, what if you want to be able to read the comment section of all websites, but want to never be able to add comments yourself, on particular sites? Is there anything that will allow this? I'm particularly interested in answers that will work for both windows and mac, and will also work for google chrome, firefox, and safari (note they can be different solutions for each browser/operating system)

• Batch convert HTML file(s) saved using IE to MHT

  I have numerous web sites that I've saved over the years. I used Internet Explorer's "Save As..." option to do this. It saves the original page as an .html document, and page requirements in a linked folder with the same name as a document. I want to convert a bunch of these (over 1000) to the single-file .mht format. This can be done through Internet Explorer or Firefox (using UnMHT extension) by loading the original .html document, then re-saving as an .mht document. It is tedious to do that for the number of files I'm talking about, obviously. I'm wondering if anyone knows of a utility, command line or otherwise, that can accomplish this.

• Why is site serving different SSL certs to different browsers?

  The SSL certificate on menswearireland.com and on www.menswearireland.com works fine on Safari, Chrome, SeaMonkey, K-Meleon, QtWeb, Firefox, and Opera. However, Internet Explorer claims that there is an error: The security certificate presented by this website was not issued by a trusted certificate authority. The security certificate presented by this website was issued for a different website's address. Security certificate problems may indicate an attempt to fool you or intercept any data you send to the server. Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; MSIE 9.0; Windows NT 6.0; Trident/5.0) Another site hosted on the same managed server shows no errors: achill-fieldschool.com and www.achill-fieldschool.com work fine on IE, even though as far as I can tell the certificate is set up identically. What am I doing wrong? This is a LAMPP server running Plesk. It looks like the server is showing different certificates to different clients. To some clients it shows a RapidSSL certificate made out to www.menswearireland.com with menswearireland.com as a valid alternative name. To other clients, it shows a Parallels Panel certificate, made out to Parallels Panel. Here are results from a few different online SSL checkers: most say it's fine, while two show errors. However, all our SSL sites are on a unique IP address, so we shouldn’t need SNI.

• vector quality of svg and pdf

  I'm converting pdf files to svg as it is easier to use svg files on webpages. I first thought the quality of svg must be similar to pdf, as they are both vector graphics. However, now I look a little better on it, it seems that pdf is a bit superior: (https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/58922976/Photos/1.png) I wonder if I could change this in some way. Is this because pdf vectors are just better quality ? Or is this because chrome renders svg in lower quality than adobe reader renders pdf ? Is this a setting in the svg file that I could change ? • mplayer dumpstream sometimes fails

  I'm trying to rip the video at http://videolectures.net/ecml07%5Fgetoor%5Fisr/, so I can play it at a faster speed. I paste http://193.2.4.216/2007/pascal/ecml07%5Fwarsaw/getoor%5Flise/ecml07%5Fgetoor%5Fisr%5F01.wmv into a firefox browser in Windows and MediaPlayer plays the thing. However if I try mplayer -dumpstream, it gets stuck into an infinite loop trying to play the file. If I use wget to download the link, I get a small text file which basically points to the same URL. How can I get mplayer to download this stream?

• How can I regain control over a "stuck" scrollbar?

  I fear that this is one of those "for your own good" features, but I'm wondering whether or not there is a setting in Firefox or Chrome (or perhaps Windows in general) that will allow me to recapture the scroll bar even though the browser may be busy. I run into this a lot, especially when I have a lot of tabs open in either browser, and so perhaps it's just a fact of life. I wouldn't mind being able to scroll along gradually, even if the page hasn't had time to fully render all of the images, etc., yet. Does such an advanced setting exist "under the hood"?

  Hi guys, I have a really annoying problem: essentially, Adobe Flash is not working anymore. For instance, I cant watch any clip on youtube and I always get a black screen saying: Movie not loaded ... I have the newest Flash version (10.0.45.2), and the problem is the same with IE, Firefox or Chrome. I am using WIN XP and I turned of Antivirus software as well as Firewall, still I cant watch any flash stuff. Anyone an idea what could have happened in the last week? • PC version of Google Chrome doesn't recognize ".local" domain name

  With Bonjour installed in PC, I can access my server in Mac with ".local". For example, I can access my mac with the name "prosseek.local". The problem is that in Chrome for PC, it doesn't recognize "local" to open search page instead of accessing mac server. This issue isn't happening with other web browsers (explore/firefox) in PC. What is even wierder is that chrome seems to recognize the ".local" sometimes, but not always. How to solve this issue? Or, how can I teach chrome that ".local" is a part of page name in order not to direct to search page?

• Windows 7 won't read from NAS on LAN

  I've got a Linkstation NAS drive on a local network. Having just got a new laptop with Windows 7 Home Professional, I can no longer read anything of the drive. I've tried accessing the drive using \192.168.1.55\share, using ftp programs such as WinSCP, filezilla and even using firefox to hit ftp://192.168.1.55. The really annoying thing is that through these methods I can see the files on the drive, counting out any kind of connection issues. I can navigate through the NAS file system, but as soon as I try and copy a file off the NAS, things just stop working. Accessing the drive through a Windows XP machine works fine. So far I've tried: Disabling firewalls Adding the LmCompatibilityLevel key to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa Using the 40 - 56 bit encryption instead of the 128 bit. Has anyone got any suggestions of what I can check or try? This is driving me crazy and I'm totally out of ideas?

• Need help generating a core dump from apache segfault

  I have a script which intermittently returns a white screen of death in firefox and Error 324 (net::ERR_EMPTY_RESPONSE): Unknown error. chrome. When I try to access the script using a PHP HTTP client (like Zend_Http_Client), intermittently I get an exception (sorry I don't have the exact message on me at the moment). I suspect a segfault. This is further buttressed by the lines in my error log that look like this: [Thu Mar 18 16:03:02 2010] [notice] child pid 845 exit signal Segmentation fault (11) Now, I'm running RedHat, and I know that RedHat doesn't generate core dumps out-of-the-box. I followed the instructions here http://kbase.redhat.com/faq/docs/DOC-5353, but I'm not seeing any core dumps. How do I generate a core dump?

• Is Flash typically slow on Linux?

  Specifically, I'm running Mint 8 (Helena). I'm extremely new to Linux, and was searching for a solution that was user-friendly and GUI oriented. The box won't be used for much other than web browsing and word processing. Anyway, it runs relatively smoothly, except for Youtube videos... especially full-screen, which runs at like 1 FPS, and even after closing, slows Firefox to a crawl until I restart it. I'd seen an xkcd comic on the matter, but regarded it as a joke until now. Is this actually a problem? Are there any remedies I can try to smooth the applications?

• Parse HTTP requests through Wireshark?

  Hi, guys, Is there any way to parse HTTP request data in wireshark? For example, can I expose the request parameters upon an HTTP GET request (being sent by my machine), so that I don't need to read the (sometimes) truncated URL and find them by myself? I was using Tamper Data and Firebug, on my Firefox, to analyse these requests, but they're not as reliable as a stand-alone tool for monitoring my network interface, but wireshark keeps data too raw concerning HTTP flow. If you guys know any other stand-alone tool that does this (must be Linux-compatible), please tell me. Thanks!

• Prevent Outlook from automatically deleting meeting emails

  I'm using Outlook Web Access to read my email. When I receive a meeting notice and acknowledge it, Outlook adds it to my calendar then deletes the email. Is there a way to disable Outlook automatically deleting the meeting email? There doesn't seem to be any way to configure this in Options - Messaging and Options - Calendar. Note that I'm using Outlook Web Access and not the desktop client. From the copyright date this appears to be Outlook 2007. Follow-up: Based on edusysadmin's comment I logged-in using IE8, which exposed a setting not available in Firefox - "Move out-of-date meeting requests and responses to the Deleted Items folder". However unchecking this box doesn't seem to impact the auto-delete behavior. Follow-up 2: Keep in mind I am using Outlook Web Access via a web browser. I do not have the thick client Outlook installed.

• How to improve the HTML formatting in Evolution mail client

  I have a question about viewing HTML emails in the Evolution mail client. Basically, I am receiving some emails that look lovely in Thunderbird but not in Evolution because the HTML rendering of Evolution isn't as advanced. Does anyone know how to improve the HTML rendering of Evolution? e.g. a plugin, tip, code patch, etc... The closest I've got is to right-click the email, "Save As...", save as a html file, then open in Firefox. Not exactly streamline! What emails can't it display well? We use the subversion revision control system which is set up to send an email whenever someone commits via svnnotify all nicely coloured via the --handler HTML::ColorDiff -d parameter. When Evolution fails to use the colours, I find it very had to read the raw diff.

Now I am trying to access this site from another computer with following details inet addr : 10.14.42.7 Bcast : 10.14.42.255 Mask : 255.255.255.0 But it says 'access denied'. nmap 10.107.105.13 gives the following output. • Embedded video is not shown in internet explorer 9 RC or Beta

  In IE 9 RC or in beta, the embedded video is not shown in the web page. I verified the security settings in "internet options". Did not find any issue. Please find the screen shot below. I am able to view the flash videos in Youtube. But, for some reason, in some sites the embedded video is not shown. I don't have this issue with firefox. UPDATE: I am able to see view the embedded video in Admin account. But not able to view it in Standard account.

Or, to put it another way, imagine the design requirements for Hulu Desktop or XBMC or WMC, applied to a web browser.   I use Google Chrome. I love the snappy and fast feeling. I thought I will miss the add ons of Firefox. But, not really. However, I used to use delicious actively and want to continue to do the same. I miss syncing my bookmarks with delicious. What is the simplest way to sync Chrome bookmarks with delicious? • Can't type into some text fields in any browser on Windows 7

  I can't type into e.g. facebook's log in form with my computer. I hit my keys, but nothing happens. Special characters like c, c, š, etc. work. Backspace doesn't, delete does. This goes for Internet Explorer, Firefox and Chrome. This also happens with some other sites, sometimes even with gmail (or any google's log in form). I read somewhere that the solution is to reregister some dlls: regsvr32 mshtmled.dll regsvr32 jscript.dll regsvr32 /i mshtml.dll The first two work, the third one says The module "mshtml.dll" was loaded but the entry-point DllRegisterServer.dll was not found. And of course, running just the first two didn't help. Does anyone know how to fix this problem?

• Windows security unknown accounts: security breach?

  I was uploading some images I had just created to imgur earlier today and noticed that chrome couldn't access my Pictures folder. Windows tells me access was denied. Firefox didn't have an issue though I went to it through windows explorer and it worked fine, and looked at the security tab under properties and noticed that there were four unknown accounts, one of which has full control privileges. I looked at my other folders in the same drive and none of them had these unknown accounts. It was only that specific Pictures folder, and all of its subfolders. What are these unknown accounts and what could it mean? Should I be worried that someone may have compromised the system (well, I should probably be worried about that all the time I guess) I read on microsoft support forums that it may be the result of a previously deleted account, but there has only been one account on this computer for months and no user account management has been performed for awhile.
