• Is JScript dying? If so, where should I go? [closed]

  I recently poked around Google for a little bit, looking for information about coding JScript. It's very sparse, which surprised me -- it took a link to a link to find Microsoft's own reference, which appears to omit most if not all references to console-based scripting that extends past Javascript. I'm working with the console here, not a webpage, so input and output seems very different than what Microsoft explains. If JScript is dying (and it appears to be so), where do I go from here? VBScript? My options are limited because the computers I'm using this on are carefully patrolled for new software. JScript's similarity to JavaScript was the biggest reason I had chosen it for porting over some of my prior work. I'm specifically looking for, at best, a console scripting language that doesn't need any extra software on Windows XP or higher, that at least supports standard input, output, pause, and file manipulation, little else.

• Design pattern: static function call with input/output containers?

  I work for a company in software research department. We use algorithms from our real software and wrap them so that we can use them for prototyping. Every time an algorithm interface changes, we need to adapt our wrappers respectively. Recently all algorithms have been refactored in such a manner that instead of accepting many different inputs and returning outputs via referenced parameters, they now accept one input data container and one output data container (the latter is passed by reference). Algorithm interface is limited to a static function call like that: class MyAlgorithm{ static bool calculate(MyAlgorithmInput input, MyAlgorithmOutput &output); } This is actually a very powerful design, though I have never seen it in a C++ programming environment before. Changes in the number of parameters and their data types are now encapsulated and they don't change the algorithm callback. In the latest algorithm which I have developed I used the same scheme. Now I want to know if this is a popular design pattern and what it is called.

• Spawning bullets on command in Box2D

  I'm making a simple bullet hell game but I can't figure out how to get my character to shoot. Lets say I have bulletBody and shipBody, how would I continually spawn bulletBodies using the shipBody coordinates. I've tried a function that uses an array of b2bodies and just assigns them the bodydef and fixture but that causes the game to crash. C++ sample code would be best but any help is appreciated. EDIT: It looks like any reference to my b2World in a function will cause the game to crash. How do I declare the bodies without using a b2World as an argument in the function.

• Is there benefit to maintain a large project with bad code?

  I'm currently maintain a large project with more than 100000 LOC. The code use the MFC as its framework, in genral, it only has interface part which heavily use the mfc api and a business logic part which full of bad code, confusing logic. The company has some small features delivered to the customer each year(most features are adding code to exisiting project, finding some reference of some api or variable and it' s no different with fixing 3-4 bugs ), most of the tasks are to resove issue and optimize performance . Like other company with maintaining position, it value people who knows much logic about its product. There are people who can quickly finish the job on such project, is it worth to train myself like such a programmer? Is there benifits to work on such project for a long time?

In discussing functionality with a client today, the topic of Site Directory came up and the comment of “well, we use it but it is too bad it is not available in 2010” was made … and huge sense of huh?!? came to me. It builds upon the first milestone and adds several new features such as server-side asynchronous processing, server-side content negotiation, improved JAX-RS parameter injection, and several others. The REST endpoints can be published on Java SE HTTP Server, Grizzly 2 HTTP container, and some basic Servlet-based deployments. It also provides HTTPURLConnection-based client API implementation. Read about these and more about what's new in Marek's detailed post. Of course this is also the future reference implementation for JAX-RS 2.0. Feel like trying it out?   Have this question from interview: Web Service function given x static HashMap map (singleton created) if (!map.containsKey(x)) { perform some function to retrieve result y map.put(x, y); } return y; The interviewer asked general question such as what is wrong with this distributed cache implementation. Then asked how to improve on it, due to distributed servers will have different cached key pairs in the map. There are simple mistakes to be pointed out about synchronization and key object, but what really startled me was that this guy thinks that moving to database implementation solves the problem that different servers will have different map content, i.e., the situation when value x is not on server A but on server B, therefore redundant data has to be retrieved in server A. Does his thinking make any sense? (As I understand this is the basic cons for distributed cache against database model, seems he does not understand it at all) What is the typical solution for the cache growth issue (weak reference?) and sync issue (do not know which server has the key already cached - use load balancing)?   I am developing a tool for simulating systems like the Gray-Scott model (That is systems where spatial distribution depends on time). The actual model is loaded from a DLL or shared object and the simulation is performed by a Simulation object. There are at least two situations when the simulation needs to be destroyed: The user loads a new model The user changes the size of the domain To make sure nothing goes wrong, the current Model, Simulation, and rendering Thread are all managed by an ApplicationState object. But the two cases above are initiated from two different UI objects. Is it then ok to distribute a reference to the ApplicationState object to all panels that need to access at least one method on the ApplicationState object? Another solution would be to use aggregation so that the panel from which the user chooses model knows the simulation parameter panel. Also, the ApplicationState class seems somewhat clumsy, so I would like to have something else

  I want to change a description of a template position, so when I go to Admin-Extensions-Module Manager I see a different description of a module position in the position list when I edit a module. However, when I change (for instance) the template 'beez_20' and want to rename the name of the position 'debug', I change the description (TPL_BEEZ_20_POSITION_DEBUG) in the language file 'languages\en-GB\en-GB.tpl_beez_20.sys.ini' to something different, say 'Abracadabra'. However, the changes don't appear in the position list and I can find no reference whatsoever of how or when the ini files are read or maybe cached. Does anyone has a clue?

  I have downloaded the Universal USB Installer and Ubuntu 12.04 Desktop as described on your site. I installed it to a 16Gb USB stick including the format option. Now when I try to boot from the stick into Ubuntu I get a couple of lines of script then a screen with EasUS Todo Backup with Backup. Recovery, Clone and Tools options, but no sign of Ubuntu starting. Where is the start Ubuntu option please? I can find no reference to EaseUS on your help pages.

• How is Pash licensed?

  Pash is an open source reimplementation of Windows PowerShell. It was released in 2008, and has been idle since then. I would like to take up the mantle. It's not clear what the license is. There is no LICENSE file or license details in the code. The only reference to a license I can find is on this page: http://sourceforge.net/projects/pash/ where it says: "License: BSD License, GNU General Public License (GPL)" But I'm not sure if I can take that as authoritative. I have tried to contact the author but he has not responded. I would hate to proceed with this project and later discover that I am violating a license, and have the project crippled as a result.

• How should UI layer pass user input to BL layer?

  I'm building an n-tier application, I have UI, BL, DAL & Entities (built from POCO) projects. (All projects have a reference to the Entities). My question is - how should I pass user input from the UI to the BL, as a bunch of strings passed to the BL method and the BL will build the object from the parameters, or should I build the objects inside the UI submit_function and send objects as parameters? • Ubuntu 13.10 change first weekday to Monday in calendar applet

  Before the update (I was using 13.04), editing: sudo gedit /etc/default/locale so that LC_TIME="en_GB.UTF-8" does the job. However in 13.10, this does not work anymore. I've tried editing: sudo gedit /usr/share/i18n/locales/en_AU sudo gedit /usr/share/i18n/locales/en_GB sudo gedit /usr/share/i18n/locales/en_US so that first_weekday 2 in each of the files, but this also does not work.   I've spent more time than i should trying to get my ray picking program working. I'm pretty convinced my math is solid with respect to line plane intersection, but I believe the problem lies with the changing of the mouse screen touch into 3D world space.   There are a number of non-Blizzard sites that show a complete list of available items in World of Warcraft (such as wowhead, etc). I would like to know the best (easiest) way to compile a similar list. I believe some sites are based on user-entered input, which I would like to avoid. Looking at the lua API, it seems that there are functions to get a list of items, but it's not clear if I can just download everything (I remember a reference to throttling somewhere, can't find it now). Does anyone have code samples that would do this, or links to source? Also, Eve Online has made a database of items available (and I do mean SQL database file for download, not the Armory) - is there anything similar for Wow? I'm just looking for the names and stats, not the graphic icons.

Each of these Windows and Linux servers has a different host name and domain name (and IP address). Our team would appreciate your guidance on: (1) Is there a way to implement this Web portal-based platform on these Linux and Windows servers without customizing the host name, domain name and IP address for each individual instance? (2) Is there a way to create some variables using JavaScript for host name and domain name and call them from the different implementations? If a reference to the host/domain names occurs on hundreds of our pages, the variables or objects would replace that. (3) This is part of making these JavaScript modules portable and re-usable for different environments and instances. The portal is written in JavaScript that is embedded in HTML5 and padded with CSS3. Other technologies include Flash, Flex, PostgreSQL and MySQL.

  I'm about to create a do-everything dashboard for my team and am still having second thoughts about my project/solution structure. Since this could be a long ongoing project, I want to get the structure right from the beginning. This is what I had in mind: Create a solution named "doEverythingDashboard" Delete the project named "doEverythingDashboard" under the solution "doEverythingDashboard" Create winform project named "interface" Create console applications projects for each functionality of "doEverythingDashboard" Reference each console application in "interface" Does this make any sense? Would it make more sense to just have one project and create a class per functionality instead of an entire project?
