  • Run a completly hidden batch file

    I'm looking for some way to run a batch file (.bat) without anything visible to the user (no window, no taskbar name, .etc..). I don't want to use some program to do that, I'm looking for something cleaner. I've found a solution that uses VBScript, but I don't really like using VBS, either.

  • Having Textmate warn me when writing to a file that was modified since Textmate last read it

    Scenario: I open a file, I edit it. After I began editing, the file is modified by another program. Finally, I save the file. In that case, Vim would provide that helpful warning: WARNING: The file has been changed since reading it Do you really want to write to it (y/n)? But Textmate will overwrite the file silently, which can result in unpleasant data loss (in my case, a de facto revert on Git). How can I prevent that?

  • Windows 2008 IIS 7.0 HTTP to HTTPS Redirect -- Versus IIS 6.0 Mechanism

    This topic, creating a mechanism for redirection from HTTP to HTTPS on a Windows 2008 server running IIS 7.0 is a much written-about topic on the Internet. How this is done is really not so much my issue. My issue is more of explaining why this can't be done with the standard HTTP Redirect module that ships with Windows 2008 IIS 7.0. Instead, there are other methods needed that are more arduous. First, the IIS 6.0 method requires no externally available modules nor does it require any additional modifications to the web.config or any type of other development effort. It's outlined here: http://blogs.microsoft.co.il/blogs/dorr/archive/2009/01/13/how-to-force-redirection-from-http-to-https-on-iis-6-0.aspx And, you can see the basic steps are to run the snap-in, get the properties on the site, and do some modifications. Presto, you have the HTTP -- HTTP redirect setup. Now, on the IIS 7.0 platform, it doesn't seem this simple. An initial search found the following site: http://www.sslshopper.com/iis7-redirect-http-to-https.html Which has two separate approcates: 1. Involves installing a separately available Microsoft module -- URL Rewrite Module, and then adding XML to the web.config. 2. Custom Error Page. ...there might be other methods, but these are the basic ones and the first is listed as the primary method. But wait...There exists on the IIS 7.0 an HTTP Redirect Module. So...why can't I use the HTTP Redirect Module to do this very thing? This is really my big question. I need to know this because my management is going to insist I use the HTTP Redirect Module and set up the HTTP to HTTPS redirect in a similar fashion to how we do in IIS 6.0. Can someone please explain to me, in clean, simple, easy to understand, terms that both I and my management can understand as to why I need to go get the URL Rewrite Module and install that on the server and make the web.config changes suggested by the article instead of simply using the HTTP Redirect module that's already installed on the site?     I'm running a rails stack on ubuntu. When I ps -AF, I get a descriptive process name set by the apache module like 00:00:43 Rails: /var/www... which is really helpful in diagnosing load issues. But when I top, the same process show up simply as ruby Is there any way to get the ps -AF process name in top?

  • Use HDD enclosure as portable hard drive?

    Someone here suggested that i should use an external hdd enclosure since my pc doesnt support a 2nd hdd and i want to use my old hdd. I will be permanently plugging that hdd enclosure to my pc and someone said it isnt safe. I'm really concerned since i would be using that drive and i'll probably be always using it since i'd play the music files i have in there. Also, would it be ok if i use that enclosure as a portable external drive?

  • DFS - Stop sync of large folder that has since been removed

    We have a site to site DFSR on Windows Server 2008 R2 that has been running perfectly between site A to site B until someone dumped a 20GB folder. This has overwhelmed the upload and make the internet almost useless at site A (the upload is low at the branch office). We have removed this folder from the DFS share on site A, however the internet is still really slow. Is there any way to cancel this sync or other way to get DFSR back in to a happy state?

  • How do I configure dual WAN links for failover on a Cisco 891?

    I have a Cisco 891 that is going to be connected to 2 WAN links, a DSL connection and a cable connection. I'm not so concerned with load balancing between them because the DSL connection speed is a drop in the bucket when compared to the cable speed though it would be nice if it worked that way. I mainly just want to force all traffic through the cable WAN link unless it goes down. I'm not really sure what feature set I should be researching.

  • Slow Write Speed on ESXi host

    I have an ESXi 5.0 free host with an internal datastore of 7.2K 5 disk RAID 5 using a PERC 710 mini RAID controller in a Dell Poweredge R620 Server with 32GB Ram and a 12 Core Xeon. I seem to get slow write speeds in the guests so I checked out ESXTOP and I see 15MB/s write speed there on this host, which is comprable to the guests. What could be causing such horrible write speeds? Is RAID 5 really this slow to write??

    Ok, so I was reading through the AMD64 manuels and knowing that nop is really an xchg eax, eax, I looked at the xchg and found something interesting, that it seems a byte can be encoded into the instruction for specifying the registers (apologies I'm on my iPod): picture. So what I am wondering is how does the processor know if there is a byte after to work with or is it that that extra register has to be of type rAX causing it to actually still be the one byte 0x90

  • Windows 7 Task Scheduler Hidden setting doesn't work

    I've got a daemon process that I run on my machine every hour, and even though I've checked the Hidden box, it doesn't work. Every hour, the task runs, but it shows the black command window, in which my .NET Console app is running. This stays visible until the task completes, and then disappears. This is very annoying, because it pops up and interrupts whatever I'm doing: I really do want it hidden, so how can I fix this?

  • Auto-hide taskbar in Chrome

    I use the auto-hide taskbar feature and I have problems with Google Chrome when it is maximized: the taskbar will not pop up at mouse hover over the taskbar position (really annoying). I know that Google admits it is a bug and it hasn't been fixed yet, and probably it will never be fixed. My question is if you know a workaround to avoid this issue.

  • Wine + InstallShield can't find a locale challenged .msi file

    I am trying to install this cheap old Japanese game I've bought but I can't get past the Installer. The CD contains a File named D:\[Japanese Characters].msi and Installshield running under wine is unable to find it giving me error 1155. I have tried mounting the CD with iocharset=sjis as well as the default utf-8 and also running the installer with and without LANG=ja_JP.Shift-JIS, but it doesn't make a difference. Also the file really is in D:. Any idea?

    I would always just spell it out saying "Eye Eye Ess," but my boss always calls it "Two Ess," like the II is roman numeral. I know it stands for Internet Information so it is not really numbers, but on the other hand it is a lot easier to say "Two Ess." Ps- This should probably be a community wiki.

    A program has installed c:/windows/syswow64/msxml4.dll on my hard drive. Sadly this is an old version (4.30.2100.0) with a security problem therefore I really wants to remove the file and the program that installed it. MSXML4 is not in the list of programs that I can uninstall under "Programs and features". Is there a way to find the program that installed it in windows 8.1? Hope some of you can help.

  • Google Apps For Business, SSO, AD FS 2.0 and AD

    We are a small company with 22 people in the office. We had a lot of problems with e-mail in the past so I decided to change over to Google Apps for Business. It is the perfect solution for us, except for one thing: I need to be able to control the access to the mailboxes. Only users inside the office, authenticated to AD, or users authenticated to our VPN can connect to gmail. From what I've read it is possible using the SSO (Single Sign On) solution provided by Google - but i am having some trouble finding consistent information about it. First of all, our infrastructure: Windows Server 2008 R2 Active Directory, one domain only. Kerio Control for QoS and VPN. That's about it on our side. On Google Apps' side, I have one account, and 03 domains that my users use to log in. The main domain has most of the users, but the are a couple of people that login using one of the subdomains. I have a 03 domains because I run mail for 03 companies and wanted all to be in within the same control panel. Well, I found some guides on the internet but none of them cover the AD FS installation part. I've read somewhere that I needed to download AD FS 2.0 directly from Microsoft.com, because the one that came with Windows Server was a old version. I downloaded it (adfsSetup.exe) and tried to install but got an error, saying that I needed a Windows Server 2008 Sp2 for that program. My Windows Server 2008 is R2. I really need some help here, this is very importand, I dont want to have to pay $1000 for a SSO solution when i have an AD set up. Can someone please point me out to the right direction? Where can I find an AD FS 2.0 setup compatible with R2 would be a good start, or the one that came with r2 is already the 2.0 version. After the initial setup, there are some guides on the internet about the Google Apps part. It seems to be really easy. I also tried adding AD FS role, but there are a bunch of options wich I have no idea what means, and I coudn't find any guide covering that on the internet. I dont have a lot of experience with Windows Server, but I have a company wich is certificated and provide us with support. I can ask for their help in the later setup, but I dont think ADFS is a very common thing to deal with.

  • Windows 7 dual boots after upgrade

    I was running Vista 64, I installed (not upgraded, fresh install) Windows 7 64 bit on the same partition, but since then it's been bringing up a dual boot menu asking if I want to boot to 7 or Vista. Any way to get rid of that, I'm really not interested in rolling back.
