• Is it common in companies that non-techs are doing analyzes

  It's been 2 months since I started working at an international big consulting company. I like my colleagues personally but it's like a joke since my first day. Analysts (people who has no idea about the tech. background) are planning the workflow and functions. In my case, none of my friends here even wrote even a single line of html. When I say Html, I doubt if they know what I mean. But they are deciding about really key decisions in a web system implementation project. Is this always like this?

• Finite Numbers and ExplorerCanvas

  I was working on my online mathematical graphing application, CloudGraph, and trying to make it work in IE. The app uses the HTML5 canvas element to draw graphs. Since IE doesn't support canvas yet I use ExplorerCanvas to provide that support for IE. However, it seems that when using excanvas, if you try to moveTo or drawTo a point that is not finite it loses it's mind and stops drawing anything else after that. I had no such problems in Firefox or Chrome so it took me awhile to figure out what was going on. Next I discovered that I needed a way to check if a variable was NaN or Inifinity or any other non-finite value so I could avoid calling moveTo() in that case. I started writing a long if statement, then I thought there has to be a better way. Sure enough there was. There just happens to be an isFinite() function built into Javascript just for this purpose. Who knew! It works great. Another difference I discovered with excanvas is that you must specify a starting point using a moveTo() when beginning a drawing path. Again, Chrome and Firefox are a lot more forgiving in this area so it took me a while to figure out why my lines weren't drawing. But, all is happy now and I'm a little wiser to the ways of the canvas.

• Will C++ remain viable for game engines in somewhat distant future?

  C++11 has opened ways, which were only dreamt by the C++ programmers. It has been three years since I have been learning C++, and I am going well. Now I want to get into vedio games. Every core of the game code I saw, was monstourously writtern in C++. My question is - If I get into serious game engine dev, and perfecting it would take, maybe say 10 years, would we still be writing game engines in C++ ?(newer standard) Or, will John Carmack, write id tech 7 in c++? note - I am strictly talking about game engines.

• Which simple server virtualization solution to use?

  For one part of our hosting platform we are currently using VMware Server 2 to create two virtual machines on one physical machine. One VM is used for hosting of small websites, the other VM is used as a staging environment. Both the host OS and guest OSes run CentOS Linux. Support for VMWare Server 2 has been discontinued and we are currently looking for a replacement. We only use basic functionality (we don't use snapshots, moving around VMs to different physical machines, or other 'advanced' functionality'). Just a box, with two VMs. We are looking for a virtualization solution that has long-term support, is stable and allows configuration/management from Mac OSx (I understood that Xen only has a Windows client). What would be the right solution for us?

• Booting off a ZFS root in 14.04

  I've been running a Debian derivative (LMDE) on a ZFS root for half a year now. It was created by cloning a regular ext4-based install with all the necessary packages onto a ZFS pool, chrooting into that pool and recreating a grub menu and bootloader. The system uses an ext-3 dedicated /boot partition. I would like to do the same with Ubuntu 14.04, but have encountered several obstacles. There is no Trusty zfs-grub package The default grub package doesn't have ZFS support built in. I found a small bug in the build system responsible for that (report with patch created) and built my own grub packages. The built-in ZFS support is dysfunctional, it does not add the proper arguments to the kernel command line I thus installed the ZoL grub package I also use on my LMDE system, which does give me a correct grub.cfg However, even with that correct grub.cfg, the boot process apparently doesn't retrieve the bootfs parameter from the ZFS pool; instead the variable that's supposed to receive the value remains empty. As a result, initrd tries to load the default pool ("rpool"), which fails of course. I can however import the pool by hand, and complete the process by hand. If memory serves me well, I also had to disable apparmor, to avoid the boot process from blocking after importing the pool. Am I overlooking something? Just for comparison, I installed the Ubuntu 3.13 kernel on my LMDE system, and that works just fine (i.e. the identical kernel and grub binaries allow successful booting without glitches on LMDE but not on Ubuntu).

• Is it possible to have tab completion of drop-down lists in web pages in Firefox?

  Does anyone know of a Firefox plugin that would enable tab-completion (or some other key sequence like Alt-L) of items in drop-down lists in web forms? e.g. ou<TAB>in<TAB>s<TAB> for 'OurCompany - Internal Support' Vimperator's hints mode makes it very ergonomic to focus the drop-down list with a key sequence like f13 but the keyboard interface to the drop-down list still sucks. I very frequently have to pick items from a very long list with very long common prefixes among the entries (e.g. 30-40 starting with OurCompany -), which renders both the built-in keyboard interface and the mouse pretty slow and unergonomic. I basically want readline support for filling webforms!

• How do I get the machine name from an IP via Multicast DNS?

  I have a list of IP addresses on a network, and most of them support multicast DNS. I'd like to be able to resolve the server name instead of just having the IP address. ping computer.local 64 bytes from 192.168.0.52: icmp_seq=1 ttl=64 time=5.510 ms 64 bytes from 192.168.0.52: icmp_seq=2 ttl=64 time=5.396 ms 64 bytes from 192.168.0.52: icmp_seq=3 ttl=64 time=5.273 ms Works, but I'd like to be able to determine that name from the IP. Also the devices don't necessarily broadcast any services, but definitely do support mDNS broadcast. So looking through services won't work.

• How to migrate Lotus Notes Mail in database to Exchange public folder?

  I need to migrate a Lotus Notes Mail database to Exchange. In the past, Users get mails in their Notes mail accounts and sort them manually by drag and drop in a specific folder structure in a seperate Notes mail database. This should be mapped to Exchange. I considered using outlook and a sharepoint Library mapped to outlook, but Outlook does not support drag and drop from the mail account to a standard doclib and the discussion libs do not support folders. So I think it's the easiest way to use an Exchange public folder instead of a sharepoint lib, which should work as in Notes (correct me if I'm wrong). But how I do migrate the old Notes db to the public folder including all subfolders? Thank you!

• Choosing the correct network protocol for my type of game (its Wc3 Warlock style)

  I need to code a little game for a school project. The type of the game is like the Warcraft 3 map "Warlock", if anyone doesnt know it, here is a short description: up to ten players spawn into an arena filled with lava, the goal of each player is to push the other players into the lava with spells (basically variations of missiles, aoe nukes, moba spells etc) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c3PoO-gcJik&feature=related we need to provide multiplayer-support over the internet, for that reason I am looking for the best network protocol for this type of game (udp, tcp, lock step, client-server...) what the requirements are: - same/stable simulation on all clients - up to ten players - up to ~100 missiles on the field - very low latency since its reaction based (i dont know the method wc3 used, but it was playable with the old servers) what would be nice (if even possible, since the traffic might be too big): - support for soft bodies over the network (with bullet physics), but this is no real requirement I read several articles about the lock step method used for RTS games, this seems to be great, but does it fit for real-time action games too (ping-related)? If anyone has run into the same problems/questions like me, I would be very happy about any help

  We are currently having ~100 servers and all of them are using remote syslog, so we have aggregated all logs on one server. The most questioned problem from our support team is: Has an email from .... to ... been delivered? I'd like to give to our support team access to some logging tool and some guide for searching in logs. What would you have recommended me? Or, do you know any other alternatives to test? The problem of grepping logs is that there is not sender and recipient address on one line. So I supposed, there might by some aggregation by email id.

  I am in the process of creating my own website, which will include a technical blog. I want to build my website using modern technologies such as HTML5 and CSS3. Since my website will be targetted at programmers and mostly tech-savvy users, should I take for granted that these people will be using a modern browser? Or should I make my site compatible with older browsers just in case? I don't want to go through the pain of adapting my website to be compatible with browsers I assume won't be used.

  I am pleased to announce a number of recent milestones for JSR 308, Annotations on Java Types: Adoption of JCP 2.8 Thanks to the agreement of the Expert Group, JSR 308 operates under JCP 2.8 from September 2012. There is a publicly archived mailing list for EG members, and a companion list for anyone who wishes to follow EG traffic by email. There is also a "suggestion box" mailing list where anyone can send feedback to the E.G. directly. Feedback will be discussed on the main EG list. Co-spec lead Prof. Michael Ernst maintains an issue tracker and a document archive. Early-Access Builds of the Reference Implementation Oracle has published binaries for all platforms of JDK 8 with support for type annotations. Builds are generated from OpenJDK's type-annotations/type-annotations forest (notably the langtools repo). The forest is owned by the Type Annotations project. Integration with Enhanced Metadata On the enhanced metadata mailing list, Oracle has proposed support for repeating annotations in the Java language in Java SE 8. For completeness, it must be possible to repeat annotations on types, not only on declarations. The implementation of repeating annotations on declarations is already in the type-annotations/type-annotations forest (and hence in the early-access builds above) and work is underway to extend it to types.

• Safari 4.0.5 will not play any HTML5 (H.264) video

  The html5test.com tells me that my browser does not support the <video> element, and when I try example page, I get the fallback message, usually "Your browser does not support HTML5 video." I know this should work in Safari. I am on Windows 7, 64-bit (running 32-bit Safari). Video works in Safari for everyone else in the office. (Windows 7 setup exactly like mine, Vista, OSX.) I have tries uninstalling, deleting all user preferences, and reinstalling. Anything else I should try?

Personally I love IE for many reasons such as ease of use and stability.  I am cranked up to see what IE 9 does as it was retooled from the start. So this one should be big. Also, its bringing HTML 5 support now so we can have much richer applications. Its about time that HTML was revved to move from the old text like stuff to a better model.   I need to change my payee name, I have asked in Google Adsense product forum one of top contributor replied me: "You will have to close the account & apply again with using your real payee name. That's why they specifically state that the payee name needs to match the full name on your bank account." https://support.google.com/adsense/answer/47333?hl=en This makes sense, but got few question because the support page do not have sufficient content to help me. My questions are: What happens when you close your Adsense account? If I apply again, then what will be the process to re-gain my account? I mean should I have to apply for a website again, then Adsense team will review and approve that? Is there any chance to disapprove my account? What about current check? I have two check in my hand. So, is Google will send those check again to me with my new payee name? Anyone experienced this problem? I have asked it on Google Forum but got no answer!

• 64-bit Hardware Virtualization on VirtualBox

  I am trying to set up a SQL Server practice lab using VirtualBox and a trial copy of Windows Server 2K8 R2 in ISO format. I received an error message that states my processor does not support 64-bit hardware virtualization. Although I "Enabled" Intel ardware virtualization in the BIOS that still doesn't work. According to the Intel website, the processor does support VT-x, however the accelerated tab in VirtualBox is greyed out and no references to VT-x are mentioned in the settings options available to me. Any ideas on how I can get around this? I checked around ServerFault and couldn't find anything but if I missed an applicable post a link is great too. You can use komodo edit and few plugin to make FTP editing work for you. The problem in these 2 apps are they don’t have syntax highlight and support for CSHTML file which are introduced with MVC 3. For this I suggest you to go with webmatrix. You can use Webmatrix to edit cshtml file online. Remember that Webmatrix don’t support Compiling of MVC project.
