• How to make FileZilla open all the required files with one click

  Is there any way of configuring FileZilla so that I can open all the files on a server that I use to edit with just one click. For example if the files are like this: /home/abc/def/one.txt /home/abc/def/yet/another/directory/two.txt /home/abc/def/ghi/yet/another/directory/three.txt Then it is very time-consuming to navigate through each directory and open the required files. These are only 3 files but what if we have around 10 to 20 files? Yes, copying the path of the directories is one thing. But something that is built-in so that I can just click a button like open all the required files of this connection and it opens all the files in the editor (as set in FileZilla preferences) then that would be great!

• Windows 7 Media Center suddenly Jerky..

  Media Center in Windows 7 has been running great for me for the past few months since I switched to Windows 7. I can watch HD content on my Xbox, and I have had very few issues with it (occasionally it has locked up on the Xbox, but restarting the Xbox usually fixes that). All of a sudden it has gotten jerky, SD content playing on my computer (not even streaming to the Xbox) is Jerky. VLC and Windows Media Player play the same content perfectly, it is just when it is playing in Windows Media Center (whether streaming or not). Any ideas what could be the cause of this? And yes I have reboot several times...

• Success Quote: A Hybrid Approach for Success

  We recently received this quote from a project that successfully used OUM: “On our project, we applied a combination of the Oracle Unified Method (OUM) and the client's methodology. The project was organized by OUM's phases and a subset of OUM's processes, tasks, and templates. Using a hybrid of the two methods resulted in an implementation approach that was optimized for the client-specific requirements for this project." This hybrid approach is an excellent example of using OUM in the flexible and scalable manner in which it was intended. The project team was able to scale OUM to be fit-for-purpose for their given situation. It's great to see how merging what was needed out of OUM with the client’s methodology resulted in an implementation approach that more closely aligned to the business needs. Successfully scaling OUM is dependent on the needs of the particular project and/or engagement. The key is to use no more than is necessary to satisfy the requirements of the implementation and appropriately address risks. • Demonstrate bad code to client?

  I have a new client that has asked me to do a redesign of their website, an ASP.NET Webforms application that was developed by another consultant. It seemed straight-forward (it never is) but I took a look at the code to make sure I knew what I was in for. This application was not written well. At all. It is extremely vulnerable to SQL Injection attacks, business logic is spread throughout the entire application, a lot of duplication, and dead end code that does nothing. On top of that, it keeps throwing exceptions that are being smothered, so it all appears to be running smoothly. My job is to simply update the html and css, but much of the html is being generated in business logic and would be a nightmare for me to sort everything out. My estimates on the redesign were longer than the client was aiming for, and they are asking why so long. How can I explain to my client just how bad this code is? In their mind, the application is running great and the redesign should be a quick one-off. It's my word against the previous consultant, so how can I actually give simple, concrete examples that a non-technical client would understand?

• ASUS EPC 1015CX won't boot with display after installing additional drivers

  I have a ASUS EPC 1015CX with Ubuntu 12.04 LTS installed using wubi alongside Windows 7. It worked perfectly after installing except that the supported screen resolution was only 800*600 instead of 1024*600. The specifications of the 1015CX device can be found here I tried installing additional drivers which was Broadcom for wireless and Cedarview-drm. By this time there was no display coming up after the boot. I could hear a voice and then the letters I typed got pronounced correctly. So, I guessed the issue has to be with the graphic terminal. I tried repair broken packages in the menu and booted and the display is now at 1024*600. But, if I restart normally the problem continues like before. As per what I found out after searching, I again opened additional drivers and installed Cedarview-graphics-driver. I tried restarting hoping it will work. But again, the result was same. There was no display but the system was working. I did more searching and followed the instructions found here. But still the result was same. I am keen to switch to linux from windows after hearing and learning great things about it. I know this community is good and always helping. I wanted to thank you all for the help in advance. Please let me know what I am doing wrong and help me to switch to linux from this same old windows.

• Application to store/browse/view photos?

  I am looking for application which I can install on Ubuntu server and put my photos there. It can be by web interface, it can be by mounted samba disk. What I require: Ability to add tags to photos. Ability to move photos. I.e. if I set photos directory to /home/photos, but then I want to move all photos to e.g. /home/common/photos - I don't want to lose all the tags. I used to use FSpot and it was great, but it lacked point 2, and I lost everything :(

• WebSocket@QCon NY

  QCon NY was held on June 10-14 at the New York Marriott/Brooklyn Bridge. Part of the QCon franchise, this is one of the most significant IT conferences in the greater NYC area. It was an honor to do a WebSocket (JSR 356) talk at the conference. Unfortunately, my schedule was such that I could only attend one day of the conference and did not really get a chance to attend many sessions or do much networking. I did get a chance to talk to fellow Oracle speakers Doug Clarke, Stephen Chin and Frederic Desbiens, which was great. My session, titled Building Java HTML5/WebSocket Applications with JSR 356 was very well attended and I had some excellent Q & A. The talk introduces HTML 5 WebSocket, overviews JSR 356, tours the API and ends with a small WebSocket demo on GlassFish 4. The slide deck for the talk is posted below. Oracle hosted a reception in the evening which was very well attended. • Playing Age of Empires II multiplayer in VirtualBox Over wi fi network

  I installed Age of Empires II (Expansion) in VirtualBox (hosting Windows XP). It works great in single player mode. Unfortunately, I tried playing multiplayer via WI-FI which I created on my Ubuntu machine and can't seem to join games. But when I connected to my WI-FI router other able to connect to my system and we can play multiplayer mode This is what I've done so far to try to resolve the issue: I noticed that the IP address of my virtual machine was 10.0.x.x, While the local IP on Ubuntu is 192.168.x.x, which I figured was a Problem. So I changed from NAT networking to bridged networking in VirtualBox . I turned off the Windows firewall in the virtual machine and don't have any ports blocked by Ubuntu, so no software firewall should be at fault. However I'm still unable to play multiplayer games, and suspect that some kind of networking issue lies at the heart of the problem. I'm not sure what else I would need to change, however. So essentially I was wondering if anyone else here has managed to play AOE2, or any similar game, inside VirtualBox from Ubuntu, and if so what you needed to do to make it possible. Or if anyone has suggestions on where else to look to figure out the problem, I'd appreciate that as well. Unfortunately AOE2 itself doesn't provide any debugging information to troubleshoot the inability to connect to network games. • Is paper indispensable in a programmer's everyday work?

  As a programmer who work in a company whose vision is to make paperless office possible, is there any way I can work effectively while using less paper? I can list at least several kinds of papers I use quite often: Paper notebook, on which I do most of the pre-coding design work and ideas Books Temporary printouts of source code, though not so often (in color, with a 6 point font at 600 DPI) Sticky note, to remind myself of things that should be taken care of within a few days On the other hand, I also use a wiki and an office text editor. Once a while I would use a diagramming software to make a few flowcharts. Deeper questions: Is there a relationship between paper use and productivity? How can programmers help save the trees? Is paperless software development fundamentally different from paperless office? Related questions: Do you ever write code with pen and paper, and should we do it more often? What physical tools do you find useful to work as a programmer? What things are essential on a programmer's desk? Stuff every programmer needs while working Additional info, if it helps: Everyone has dual monitors. We have decent project management and issue tracking software (both web-based). Please be constructive. In particular, please give your answer to your peer programmers who wish to be flexible and are willing to change working style in order to become more productive as well as meeting certain their own personal values. • Execute a SSIS package in Sync or Async mode from SQL Server 2012

  Today I had to schedule a package stored in the shiny new SSIS Catalog store that can be enabled with SQL Server 2012. (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh479588(v=SQL.110).aspx) Once your packages are stored here, they will be executed using the new stored procedures created for this purpose. This is the script that will get executed if you try to execute your packages right from management studio or through a SQL Server Agent job, will be similar to the following: Declare @execution_id bigint EXEC [SSISDB].[catalog].[create_execution] @package_name='my_package.dtsx', @execution_id=@execution_id OUTPUT, @folder_name=N'BI', @project_name=N'DWH', @use32bitruntime=False, @reference_id=Null Select @execution_id DECLARE @var0 smallint = 1 EXEC [SSISDB].[catalog].[set_execution_parameter_value] @execution_id,  @object_type=50, @parameter_name=N'LOGGING_LEVEL', @parameter_value=@var0 DECLARE @var1 bit = 0 EXEC [SSISDB].[catalog].[set_execution_parameter_value] @execution_id,  @object_type=50, @parameter_name=N'DUMP_ON_ERROR', @parameter_value=@var1 EXEC [SSISDB].[catalog].[start_execution] @execution_id GO The problem here is that the procedure will simply start the execution of the package and will return as soon as the package as been started…thus giving you the opportunity to execute packages asynchrously from your T-SQL code. This is just *great*, but what happens if I what to execute a package and WAIT for it to finish (and thus having a synchronous execution of it)? You have to be sure that you add the “SYNCHRONIZED” parameter to the package execution. Before the start_execution procedure: exec [SSISDB].[catalog].[set_execution_parameter_value] @execution_id,  @object_type=50, @parameter_name=N'SYNCHRONIZED', @parameter_value=1 And that’s it . PS From the RC0, the SYNCHRONIZED parameter is automatically added each time you schedule a package execution through the SQL Server Agent. If you’re using an external scheduler, just keep this post in mind .

• Is browser fingerprinting a viable technique for identifying anonymous users?

  Is browser fingerprinting a sufficient method for uniquely identifying anonymous users? What if you incorporate biometric data like mouse gestures or typing patterns? The other day I ran into the Panopticlick experiment EFF is running on browser fingerprints. Of course I immediately thought of the privacy repercussions and how it could be used for evil. But on the other hand, this could be used for great good and, at the very least, it's a tempting problem to work on. While researching the topic I found a few companies using browser fingerprinting to attack fraud. And after sending out a few emails I can confirm at least one major dating site is using browser fingerprinting as but one mechanism to detect fake accounts. (Note: They have found it's not unique enough to act as an identity when scaling up to millions of users. But, my programmer brain doesn't want to believe them).   I just started another website and it has taken me 30mins to copy/paste my other website and delete stuff because I don't have a template. Theres lots of features I copied over that I haven't seen in libraries/templates. But I don't really know any libraries/templates. This site is ASP.NET. Some things I have is a string.format that escapes strings for HTML (so <hi> is text instead of a tag). Other features are adding or removing items in the url query, a class to pass in a ASP.NET error and log or convert it into a row in a db (I know about elmah but during development on my last site it wasn't Mono compatible), a mini AJAX library for success/fail/redirect/etc, a class to pass in a ASP.NET error and log or convert it into a row in a db and anything else I would use in every site. I don't like my (library) design because I wasn't expecting to do more then 2-3 websites and I am on my 5th. I don't know proper ASP.NET either so what is an article that explains how to make a great library/template for websites?

• how can i move my events in my ipod calendar to google? it won't let me move items from ipod to goog

  I've followed googles recommendations and steps for syncing my ipod touch, newest OS, with my google calendar. Sync works great when google calendar events are added or deleted on the marked for syncing calendar. They show up on my ipod. But when I make changes on the native Ipod touch calendar they are not reflected in the google calendar marked for syncing. What gives? I also have been unable to do an initial sync that would move my Ipod calendar events to my google calendar. Any suggestions?

• Why old (301) links stay on Google when breaking site down to multiple domains

  Some background: We did have single site and single domain (let's call it mainsite.com) with product information, however things have changed since and product database has grown fast. So we decided to move some major products/manufacturers under their own domains (let's call one of them subsite.com) while still using our main database/codebase. What we've done: Added subsite.com domain for product 1 by Great Products Co. Some new nice looking front pages, info pages, etc. Detail pages that will use information from original db. Redirected product/group links from mainsite.com using 301 redirect. Verified that redirects works as expected. Waited some time for Google reindexing (over 30 days, I've heard it should be more than enough). Results: If I search our moved products from Google then it will found them and list them but with old links to our main page like mainsite.com/group/product1 but it should show link to new site subsite.com/product1. Links from Goole redirects as they should, as said redirects are verified [301]. Main question: Any reasons why Google would not follow 301 redirects and update links so that they will point to our new mfg/product site subsite.com?

• Macbook Pro Multiple Monitor Problem

  I have been using a Macbook pro (newest model) for about 4 weeks with dual monitors. It has been working great using the mac adaptor to dvi. Today however, my mac will not recognize it's built in monitor while the second monitor is plugged in. Plug in second monitor The screen on the laptop goes dark. The second monitor acts as the main screen. Click "Detect displays". Nothing happens Unplug the second monitor Screen on the laptop comes on. Any thoughts?

• Using IIS7 as a reverse proxy

  Hi All, My question is pretty much identical to the question listed but they did not get an answer as they ended up using Linux as the reverse proxy. http://serverfault.com/questions/55309/using-iis7-as-a-reverse-proxy I need to have IIS the main site and linux (Apache) being the proxied site(s). so I have site1.com (IIS7) site2.com (Linux Apache) they have subdomains of sub1.site1.com sub2.site1.com sub3.site2.com I want all traffic to go to site1.com and to say anything that is site2.com should be proxied to linux box on internal network, (believe ARR can do this but not sure how). I can not have it running as Apache doing the proxying as I need IIS exposed directly. any and all advice would be great. Thanks

• Spotlight on mkyong

  Occasionally, I'd like to share a blog I've discovered or that someone has passed along to me. Criteria are few, but in a nutshell, it must be: Java-related. (Doh!) Interesting. A good blog is exciting to read at some level, whether due to perspective, eye-catching writing, or technical insight. It doesn't have to read like a Stephen King novel, but it should grab you somehow. Technically deep or technically broad. A site that dives deeply, quickly is a great reference for particular topics/tasks. On the other hand, one that covers a lot of ground at a high-but-still-technical level can be a handy site to visit occasionally as well. Both are what I consider "bookmarkable", but for different reasons. Drumroll, please... With that in mind, this Blog Spotlight is cast upon mkyong.com, a site I stumbled across that offers a little bit of everything for various Java dev audiences. The title indicates the site is for "Java web development tutorials", and indeed it does have these: JSF, Spring, Struts, Hibernate, JAX-WS, JAX-RS, and numerous other topics are addressed to varying degrees. The site isn't devoted exclusively to server-side tutorials, though. Recent posts include mobile development topics, and the links at the bottom of the page connect you to reference pages and other useful sites. I've poked around through a couple of the tutorials and, while they won't take you from "zero to hero", they do seem to provide a nice overview of the subject at hand. They also offer an occasional explanatory comment that is missing from far too many texts, sites, and doc pages. It's not a perfect site, but I like it. The Bottom Line mkyong.com offers a nice "summary site" of server-side tutorials, mobile dev posts, and reference links. Check it out! All the best,Mark

• differencing disk opinions

  I've read about the performance issues with dfferencing disks but I still think there is a solid place for them and thats the os boot partition. If I'm going to have 20 vms on a csv based volume I don't won't to waste the 20+ gigs per guest just for the os boot. If I get a good base disk with all of the most used applications installed and have the pagefile located somewhere else I don't think the delta's would be that great thus it should not create a performance issue. Also in a SAN based csv volumes does it make any sense in having the pagefile go to a seperate csv volume? Any opinions on this? thanks
