• How can I recursively change the permissions of files and directories?

  I have ubuntu installed on my local computer with apache / php / mysql. I now have a directory at /var/www - inside which I have several of my ongoing projects. I also work with opensource ( drupal, magento, sugarcrm ). The problem I am facing is changing file permission with terminal. Sometime I need to change the permission of entire folder and its subsequent sub-folders and files. I have to individually change using sudo chmod 777 foldername How can I do this recursively. Also why do I have to always do it 777, I tried 755 for folders and 644 for files, but that won't work.

• Auto-mount CD/DVD drive to single, specific mount point every time?

  Currently, whenever I insert a CD or DVD into my DVD drive, it mounts to a location such as /media/<LABEL>, where <LABEL> is the arbitrary label assigned to the optical disc. I remember, once upon a time, CD and DVD media being reliably located at /media/cdrom0 or something similar. Why was this changed? And how do I get this old behavior back for this drive? I can understand this behavior for USB sticks. It makes sense for those. But not for CD/DVD media, in my opinion. For example, because of this, I have no way to configure Wine to point to my DVD drive, as the mount point changes with every single CD I insert. TL;DR: How do I make CD/DVD media always mount to /media/cdrom0?

• MTP Won't Work With Newer Ubuntu

  I have a Philips GoGear Vibe 4 GB, set to MTP mode, as it's always been. This works fine with older versions of Ubuntu and works fine with Windows, but doesn't work with newer versions of Ubuntu. The version history is like this: 12.04 - works 12.10 - works 13.04 - doesn't work 14.04 - doesn't work Windows 7 - works When you plug the MP3 player in Ubuntu the file manager opens the root of the device, which contains the folder "internal storage". When you click on "internal storage" to open it, the file manager just hangs. And if you try to unmount the MP3 player, that process hangs too, until you just unplug it. In Windows when you click on internal storage, it opens and shows all the files it contains. And in the earlier versions of Ubuntu it just worked. Any ideas? Thanks.

• Screen problems

  I struggled a lot in order to install Ubuntu because of a problem with the video drivers caused by when installing the driver and after turning it on it just appears a black screen, which worked for me was to use the terminal with sudo setpci -s 00:02.0 F4.B=0 and the screen starts, but after rebooting the changes won't remain and I have to run that command again. My question is: How can I make the changes permanent and not to be in need to execute that command always when I shut it down? Original Question in Spanish: Problemas con pantalla He batallado mucho al instalar ubuntu por el problema con el controlador de video ya que al instalarlo al encenderla aparece solo una pantalla negra lo que me funciono fue usar desde consola sudo setpci -s 00:02.0 F4.B=0 enciende la pantalla pero al reiniciarla los cambios no se quedan guardados y tengo que volver a ejecutar ese comando mi pregunta es ¿como hacerle para que los cambios queden igual y no tener que estar ejecutando eso siempre que la apago?

• Why do large IT projects tend to fail or have big cost/schedule overruns?

  I always read about large scale transformation or integration project that are total or almost total disaster. Even if they somehow manage to succeed the cost and schedule blow out is enormous. What is the real reason behind large projects being more prone to failure. Can agile be used in these sort of projects or traditional approach is still the best. One example from Australia is the Queensland Payroll project where they changed test success criteria to deliver the project.   By default, windows search only search by File name. To configure windows search to search by contents you need configure the following: You need to make sure Windows Search Services feature is activated.(Check this article for details) Then, configure Windows Search by Open file explorer: Press Alt button –> go to tools –> Folder options –> search tab –> Here select, “Always search file names and content(this might take several minutes)” Press okay. Now your searches will work for file content like the good old days of XP. • How to convince management to deal with technical debt?

  This is a question that I often ask myself when working with developers. I've worked at four companies so far, and I've noticed a lack of attention to keeping code clean and dealing with technical debt that hinders future progress in a software app. For example, the first company I worked for had written a database from scratch rather than take something like MySQL and that created hell for the team when refacoring or extending the app. I've always tried to be honest and clear with my manager when he discusses projections, but management doesn't seem interested in fixing what's already there and it's horrible to see the impact it has on team morale and in their attitude towards others. What are your thoughts on the best way to tackle this problem? What I've seen is people packing up and leaving and the company becomes a revolving door with developers coming and and out and making the code worse. How do you communicate this to management to get them interested in sorting out technical debt?

• Ubuntu upgrade deleted my email accounts

  I'm a long term Ubuntu user and until today I have been really happy. I've always run Evolution and Thunderbird and after Ubuntu apparently upgraded me from 11.04 to 11.10 both my Evolution and Thunderbird programmes and all data / address books, messages and folders were deleted and I now have to create new accounts for both programmes. All my previous data is LOST. Thanks a lot guys. Why did this happen and why was there no warning given that this could be an issue ??? Is any of this recoverable ?

• Java 2D Rectangle Collision? [on hold]

  I am just wanting to know of another (longer OR shorter) way of getting 100% effective collisions on a 2D plat-former. The current collision system that is in place works from coords on the level and does not always work reliably. Thank you in advance for any help/support. The current system draws a rectangle and is checking to see if any two points collide. • ubuntu broke my windows boot

  I was installing ubuntu on pendrive and once finished I needed to run windows a bit, even though I chose erase and install ON THE PENDRIVE it altered my hdd boot sector When I remove the ubu cd and pendrive it should only boot from hdd (windows) but it gives Error: no such device : blablabla(numerbes and letters) Grub rescue _ If I place the pendrive inside it asks me whether to start windows or linux (windows works here) I need to run windows without the pendrive, how can I remove grub from the hdd and also run ubuntu from the pendrive(once I remove grub from the hdd) || THX ArK, your information help me do wonders! :) || Now... it seems that without grub i can not boot the ubuntu from the pendrive anymore, blank screen and nothing loads(i did check the ubuntu with the grub from the hdd, and everything inside it worked perfectly (except the clock, it didnt find my local hour...) ) New problem: it seems that grub which is now on the pendrive is always asking me whether to boot from windows or ubuntu F*ck of course i want to boot ubuntu otherwise i would stick the pen inside the computer

• Is online freelance work viable by American standards?

  I've always been curious about trying out online freelance sites... it would be nice to work from home, feel independent, get to choose what I want to work on, get to work on different technologies, lose the PHB, etc. However I never really gave them a chance because I'm used to American rates and assumed that I would be competing with people from India, Russia, China, etc. that would severely undercut me, and it wouldn't be viable for me. • Techniques for getting off the ground in any language

  When I start learning a new language, I have a couple of simple implementations that I like to complete to familiarise myself with the language. Currently, I write: Fibonacci and/or factorial to get the hang of writing and calling methods, and basic recursion Djikstras shortest path (with a node type) to get to grips with making classes (or whatever the language equivalent is) with methods and properties, and also using them in slightly more complex code.
