  • How to port an Ajax CMS based on metadata in Asp.Net MVC?

    I'm maintaining a CMS where I have this feeling it was made in the age of dinosaurs (Asp.net 1.0?) and decided to upgrade it with Asp.Net MVC and jQuery. But I have some problems regarding the design/specifications of the CMS which I cannot change. The CMS The CMS uses JavaScript. Alot. As in "I don't load pages, I request new pages using Ajax and render the information using javascript" alot. Not to mention the animations, the weird horizontal apresentation of structures... anyways, besides the first page (that is the login page) every other "page" is just data requested from a WebService that comes with the website. Would MVC have any problems with this design? The Database The database is in a SQL Server 2k8 and, like the CMS, this part is also... interesting. Basically, the user can create data structures using metadata (and saved on the Structure table). These structures are saved on tables that are created (and regenerated when changed) at runtime using said metadata. I don't know how I would implement this part in MVC. The question is, can and should I convert this project to MVC? Any tips regarding the metadata and overuse of ajax?

  • XSL(like) declarative language as MVC view over strongtyped model?

    As a huge XSL fan, I am very happy to use xsl as the view in our proprietary MVC framework on ASP.NET. Objects in the model are serialized under the hood using .NET's xml serializer, and we use quite atomic xsl templates to declare how each object or property should transform. For example: <xsl:template match="/Article"> <html> <body> <div class="article"> <xsl:apply-templates /> </div> </body> </html> </xsl:template> <xsl:template match="Article/Title"> <h1> <xsl:apply-templates /> </h1> </xsl:template> <xsl:template match="@*|text()"> <xsl:copy /> </xsl:template> This mechanism allows us to quickly override default matching templates, like having a template matching on the last item in a list, or the selected one, etc. Also, xsl extension objects in .NET allow us just the bit of extra grip that we need. Common shared templates can be split up and included. However Even though I can ignore the verbosity downside of xsl (because Visual Studio schema intellisense + snippets really is slick, praise to the VS-team), the downside of not having intellisense over strongtyped objects in the model is really something that's bugging me. I've seen ASP.NET MVC + user controls in action and really starting to love it, but I wonder; Is there a way of getting some sort of intellisense over XML that we're iterating over, or do you know of a language that offers the freedom and declarativeness of XSL but has the strongtype/intellisense benefits of say webforms/usercontrols/asp.net.mvc-view? (I probably know the answer: "no", and I'll find myself using Phil Haack's utterly cool mvc shizzle soon...)

  • Struggling running ASP MVC2 on IIS6.0

    Hi I could use a little Help using MVC2 on an IIS6.0 Its an MVC2 RC2 [.NET 3.5]. I followed the famous Haacked Tutorial, created a virtual folder, created a Default.aspx Website for my Project, put everything to my virtual folder. The routing is modified, using wildcard mapping [anyway its not running without, too], according to the Tutorial. I also checked, that all Webservices are running [asp.net 2 / asp.net 4 / active server pages]. The routing is working fine on my development machine, even checked it using Haacks routing debugger ... [http://haacked.com/archive/2008/03/13/url-routing-debugger.aspx] Seems fine so far, but I get only 404 - not found errors. Is there something I might be missing ?   • ASP.NET how to use __doPostBack from Custom JavaScript with Master/Content Pages

    In a simple aspx page I can have a custom JavaScript function postback as described in http://www.xefteri.com/articles/show.cfm?id=18 The simple page uses a linkbutton: <asp:LinkButton id="CreateFile" runat="server" onclick="CreateFile_Click" /> with code behind that has the VB subroutine: Sub CreateFile_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) and a Javascript custom function that does: __doPostBack('CreateFile',''); When I move the code to a content page with a corresponding master page the simple example no longer works. I'm aware that server control IDs are changed in the generated HTML when a master page is involved, and I'm using the correct IDs in the Javascript. As an example, for the LinkButton ID I use '<%=CreateFile.ClientID%' for the Javascript in the generated HTML. Never the less, I still can't figure out how to get postbacks from the Javascript when master pages are involved. More accurately, with a master page in the mix the code won't even compile but results in: 'CreateFile_Click' is not a member of 'ASP.testmaster_aspx' If I remove onclick="CreateFile_Click" from the LinkButton markup it compiles but does not work. Similary if onclick is removed from the simpler version without a master page it does not work either, as expected. Any input on how to get postback from a custom Javascript function when using master pages would be much appreciated.

    I am developing a simple ASP.NET website that will run on the intranet on a WS2008(IIS7) box and respond to users running XP/IE8. Everything is domain connected and I am trying to automatically login the users much like SharePoint does. On my dev machine (XP), when running the site through VS, everything works. I can pickup on the user perfectly. I am using the following settings: <authentication mode="Windows"/> <identity impersonate="true"/> <anonymousIdentification enabled="false"/> <authorization> <allow users="*"/> <deny users="?"/> </authorization> However, when I publish to the WS2008 box, it doesn't work. Clearly I am missing a setting in IIS7 to support this. I have the following set for Authentication on the site: Anon Auth - Enabled ASP.NET Impersonation - Enabled Basic Auth - Disabled Forms Auth - Disabled Windows Auth - Disabled What am I missing?   • Display a Photo Gallery using Asp.Net and SQL

    I have recently added photos to my SQL database and have displayed them on an *.aspx page using Asp:Image. The ImageUrl for this control stored in a separate *.aspx page. It works great for profile pictures. I have a new issue at hand. I need each user to be able to have their own photo gallery page. I want the photos to be stored in the sql database. Storing the photos is not difficult. The issue is displaying the photos. I want the photos to be stored in a thumbnail grid fashion, when the user clicks on the photo, it should bring up the photo on a separate page. What is the best way to do this. Obviously it is not to use Asp:Image. I am curious if I should use a Gridview. If so, how do I do that and should their be a thumbnail size stored in the database for this? Once the picture is click on how does the other page look so that it displays the correct image. I would think it is not correct to send the photoId through the url.   • Creating Visual Studio projects that only contain static files

    Have you ever wanted to create a Visual Studio project that only contained static files and didn’t contain any code? While working on ASP.NET MVC we had a need for exactly this type of project. Most of the projects in the ASP.NET MVC solution contain code, such as managed code (C#), unit test libraries (C#), and Script# code for generating our JavaScript code. However, one of the projects, MvcFuturesFiles, contains no code at all. It only contains static files that get copied to the build output folder: As you may well know, adding static files to an existing Visual Studio project is easy. Just add the file to the project and in the property grid set its Build Action to “Content” and the Copy to Output Directory to “Copy if newer.” This works great if you have just a few static files that go along with other code that gets compiled into an executable (EXE, DLL, etc.). But this solution does not work well if the projects only contains static files and has no compiled code. If you create a new project in Visual Studio and add static files to it you’ll still get an EXE or DLL copied to the output folder, despite not having any actual code. We wanted to avoid having a teeny little DLL generated in the output folder. In ASP.NET MVC 2 we came up with a simple solution to this problem. We started out with a regular C# Class Library project but then edited the project file to alter how it gets built. The critical part to get this to work is to define the MSBuild targets for Build, Clean, and Rebuild to perform custom tasks instead of running the compiler. The Build, Clean, and Rebuild targets are the three main targets that Visual Studio requires in every project so that the normal UI functions properly. If they are not defined then running certain commands in Visual Studio’s Build menu will cause errors.   • Precompile asp.net webpart dll

    Hi, I have built a few custom webparts for WSS 3 using the Visual Studio 2010 Web application template. When I compile the application, Visual Studio creates the assembly file in the bin directory which I copy over later to the production server (another machine) with WSS 3. The compiled webpart dll is copied into the bin folder inside the virtual directory of WSS. I would like to precompile the webpart / dll using the aspnet_precompiler on my development machine to reduce the delay when the page is first requested. I have used the following command to precompile the entire Web Application: aspnet_precompile -v / -p PATH_TO_WEB_APPLICATION C:\WebApp -errorstack The compilation runs fine without any errors and I end up with a couple of .compiled files and also a Web_App_xxxxx.dll file inside the C:\WebApp\bin folder. From here onwards I am a bit lost how to proceed. Could you give me an advise to which folder I need to copy the compiled files on the production server? Do they need to go into the bin folder on the server or better inside the temporary asp.net folder %SystemRoot%\Microsoft.NET\Framework\versionNumber\Temporary ASP.NET Files folder? Can I precompile the Web application on a development machine without the IIS metabase? Cheers, Mathias

    I am trying to detect a session state timeout in my asp.net application and am unable to do so. I have a base class that derives from System.Web.UI.Page as follows:- public class BasePageSessionExpire : Page { override protected void OnInit(EventArgs e) { base.OnInit(e); if (Context.Session != null) { if (Session.IsNewSession) { string szCookieHeader = Request.Headers["Cookie"]; if ((null != szCookieHeader) && (szCookieHeader.IndexOf("ASP.NET_SessionId") > 0)) { Session.Abandon(); Response.Redirect("~/SessionExpired.aspx",true); } } } } } All the pages I need session state checking on derive from this base class instead of "System.Web.UI.Page". Also, all these pages have EnableSessionState="True". I have a blank Session_Start() method in my global.asax file if that is relevant at all. For some reason after the first request, the "Session.IsNewSession" property is always false. It is true only for the first request and then is always false. I have my timeout set to 1 minute. The session never seems to timeout. What am I missing here ? Thanks in advance.

    I have a user control that contains a GridView. The GridView has both a HyperLinkField column and a template column that contains a HyperLink control. The ASP.NET project is structured as follows, with the Default.aspx page in each case using the user control. Application Root Controls UserControl with GridView SystemAdminFolder Default.aspx Edit.aspx OrganisationAdminFolder Default.aspx Edit.aspx StandardUserFolder Default.aspx Edit.aspx Note: The folders are being used to ensure the user has the correct role. I need to be able to set the DataNavigateUrlFormatString for the HyperLinkField and the NavigateUrl for the HyperLink to resolve to the Edit.aspx page in the corresponding folder. If I set the navigate URL to "Edit.aspx" the URL in the browser appears as 'http://Application Root/Controls/Edit.aspx' regardless of the originating directory. I can't use the Web application root operator (~/) as the path needs to be relative to the current page, not the application root. How can I use the same user control in multiple folders and resolve the URL to another page in the same folder? Note: The question is strongly based off a similar question by azhar2000s on the asp.net forums that matches my problem.

  • Using Javascript to detect when a user has selected an item in an ASP.NET listbox

    Hello all, I am developing an ASP.NET web application that incorporates google maps. I have an ASP.NET listbox on my page which contains a list of items. When the user selects one of the items, I'd like to show this item on the map. The main complication lies in the fact that google maps uses javascript to control it and the listbox is a server control. I can think of two ways to do this. The first would involve the listbox calling a javascript function when the user selects a new item. I can then write this function to perform the necessary map operations. Unfortunately, the OnSelectedIndexChanged property of the listbox doesn't seem to support javascript functions. The second involves wrapping an UpdatePanel around the listbox and getting the listbox to perform a postback. In the SelectedIndexChanged event in VB/C#, I would the need to somehow make a call to a javascript function which would then update the map. Which solution can I use? Thanks --Amr

    Hi all, We have a updatable web site project that is written in c#, it has the usual web form implementation using master page, skins, user controls,...etc. Up to this point we neglect to change the default compilation language from VB to C#. However, the second we change it, we see the following error. Further investigation points out that this error is getting generated from a Theme related assembly (Source : App_Theme_Default.zclakrlo). Any ideas? One of my co-worker suggested that it might be skin file related since we have a theme call "Default" and there is no way to specify a language on a skin file. Therefore, when the asp.net runtime tries to compile it under C#, it will give a name collision? Does this make sense? Any help is appreciated.

What i want is for the popup for to be posted and the fancy box to be closed.   • IIS8 Asp.net State service remote connection failure

    Recently we upgrade our web server to windows server 2012 with IIS8. We have this issue when users try to connect the asp.net state service to this web server remotely. It always popup Unable to make the session state request to the session state server. Please ensure that the ASP.NET State service is started and that the client and server ports are the same. If the server is on a remote machine, please ensure that it accepts remote requests by checking the value of HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\aspnet_state\Parameters\AllowRemoteConnection. If the server is on the local machine, and if the before mentioned registry value does not exist or is set to 0, then the state server connection string must use either 'localhost' or '127.0.0.1' as the server name. In IIS7 / 7.5 we use the same way and it works fine. As long as the state service is running and firewall is set properly, we don't have any problem. However, in IIS8 it doesn't work. (We even turn off firewall to test it) Thanks for helping.

  • Error when instantiating .NET/COM interop class via classic ASP

    Hi all, I am having a problem when trying to instantiate a C# .NET class that's been exposed to COM in a classic ASP application. I've used tlbexp to generate a typelib and registered it in Component Services; now when trying to create the object as such: Server.CreateObject("The.Class.Name") I am getting the error: Server object error 'ASP 0177 : 80131534' Server.CreateObject Failed I've searched around online for information on this error, and found numerous discussions but no solution. The error code 0x80131534 apparently means "COR_E_TYPEINITIALIZATION, a type failed to initialize", which would suggest the problem would be in the constructor. The constructor of the class in question sets a private field to an instance of another class from the same assembly, and then reads some configuration settings from an XML file. This behaviour is unit tested and I've checked that the file exists; I can't see anything else that could be breaking in there. A few other points which may or may not be of use: A test .NET project referencing the DLL can instantiate the class just fine; however a test VB6 project referencing the TLB blows up with the same error. Both the DLL and the TLB are in the same location. This application is running locally, on Windows XP Professional SP3 and IIS 5.1. The .NET assembly is built with .NET Framework 2.0, although 3.5 is installed on the machine. I know other people who don't get this error on their builds, so I believe it may be something environmental. Any suggestions are welcome as I've been struggling to fix this for some time.     First of all, I'm still working in classic ASP (vbScript) with an MS Access Database. And, yes I know its archaic, but I'm still hopeful I can do this! So now to my problem: Take the following table as an example: PROJECTS ContactName StartDate EndDate Complete Mitch 2009-02-13 2011-04-23 No Eric 2006-10-01 2008-11-15 Yes Mike 2007-05-04 2009-03-30 Yes Kyle 2009-03-07 2012-07-08 No Using ASP (with VBScript), and an MS Access Database as the backend, I’d like to be able to sort this table with the following logic: I would like to sort this table by date, however, depending on whether a given project is complete or not I would like it to use either the “StartDate” or “EndDate” as the reference for a particular row. So to break it down further, this is what I’m hoping to achieve: For PROJECTS where Complete = “Yes”, reference “EndDate” for the purpose of sorting. For PROJECTS where Complete = “No”, reference “StartDate” for the purpose of sorting. So, if I were to sort the above table following these rules, the output would be: PROJECTS ContactName StartDate EndDate Complete 1 Eric 2006-10-01 2008-11-15* Yes 2 Mitch 2009-02-13* 2011-04-23 No 3 Kyle 2009-03-07* 2012-07-08 No 4 Mike 2007-05-04 2009-03-30* Yes *I’ve put a star next to the date that should be used for the sort in the table above.   • Authenticating to Google Search Appliance using Basic HTTP auth and ASP.NET (VB)

    I've run into a snag though which has to do with authentication between the Google Search Appliance and ASP. Normally, when asking for secure pages from the search appliance, the search appliance asks for credentials, then uses these credentials to try and access the secure results. If this attempt is successful, the page shows up in the results list. Since ASP is contacting the search appliance on the client's behalf, it will need to collect credentials and pass them along to the search appliance. I have tried a couple of different documented ways of accomplishing this, but they don't seem to work.   • Classic ASP to WCF using the Service Moniker

    I am trying to consume a WCF logging service from classic ASP without deploy a Com wrapper. I found a method of doing so here. Here is the vb script, simplified. Dim addr addr = "service:mexAddress=""net.pipe://localhost/Services/Logging/LoggingManager/Mex""," _ & "address=""net.pipe://localhost/Services/Logging/LoggingManager/classic/""," _ & "contract=""ILoggingManagerClassic"", contractNamespace=""http://Services.Logging.Classic/""," _ & "binding=""NetNamedPipeBinding_ILoggingManagerClassic"", bindingNamespace=""http://Services.Logging.Classic/""" set objErrorLogger = GetObject(addr) Dim strError : strError = objErrorLogger.LogError("blahblah") This works on Server 2008, but fails with this error on Server 2003. Failed to do mex retrieval:Metadata contains a reference that cannot be resolved: net.pipe://localhost/Services/Logging/LoggingManager/Mex.. Only when running through ASP does it fail, a sample VBS file on the same machine using the same code works fine. I think it may be permission related, but don't know where to begin. Anyone have any ideas? EDIT - let me clarify that the WCF host is a windows service running as NETWORK SERVICE. If this belongs on server fault, a moderator can move it. I have an account there as well.

Background: I have a web-host who was running my website on Windows Server 2003 and SQL Server 2000. One of my webpages returned a result set from a stored procedure from the SQL server as xml. My current host is not going to support DSN any longer, but that's out of scope for this issue. Someone told me to use an ADO.Stream object instead of a Recordset object, but I'm unsure how to implement that. Question: Has anyone run into this and found a way to fix it? What about that ADO.Stream object, can someone help me with a sample that would fit my code?

  • Retrieving many huge sized EPS files and converting them to JPEG in ASP.NET application

    I have many (600) EPS files(300 KB - 1 MB) in database. In my ASP.NET application (using ASP.NET 4.0) I need to retrieve them one by one and call a web service which would convert the content to the JPEG file and update the database (JPEGContent column with the JPEG content). However, retrieving the content for 600 of them itself takes too long from the SQL management studio itself (takes 5 minutes for 10 EPS contents). So I have two issues:- 1) How to get the EPS content ( unfortunately, selecting certain number of content is not an option :-( ):- Approach 1:- foreach(var DataRow in DataTable.Rows) { // get the Id and byte[] of EPS // Call the web method to convert EPS content to JPEG which would also update the database. } or foreach(var DataRow in DataTable.Rows) { // get only the Id of EPS // Hit database to get the content of EPS // Call the web method to convert EPS content to JPEG which would also update the database. } or Any other approach? 2) Converting EPS to JPEG using a web method for 600 contents. Ofcourse, each call would be a long running operation. Would task parellel library (TPL) be a better way to achieve this? Also, is doing the entire thing in a SQL CLR function a good idea?
