• What is the best way to auto failover to backup WAN link for web server

  Hi Iam looking for the best way to ensure my server ( application ) remains available for all my users (on web/LAN/WAN ), when my primary ISP link fails. My server is behind a firewall on which both my primary & secondary links land. I have already assigned multiple IPs (both ISP's static IP) to the 'A' record ( host.example.com ) in the DNS. However in a round robin scenario is there a way I can ensure that my web user will not see a "cannot dislay web page" error ever ?? What are the better methods to achieve this??

  I am new to both Chef and Ruby and I am implementing some scripts to learn them. Now I am facing the problem of how to organize my code: I have created a class in the library directory and I have used a custom namespace to maintain order. This is a simplified example of my file: # ~/chef-repo/cookbooks/mytest/libraries/MyTools.rb module Chef::Recipe::EP class MyTools def self.print_something( text ) puts "This is my text: #{text}" end def self.copy_file( dir, file ) cookbook_file "#{dir}/#{file}" do source "#{dir}/#{file}" end end end end From my recipe I call both methods: # ~/chef-repo/cookbooks/mytest/recipes/default.rb EP::MyTools.print_something "Hello World!" EP::MyTools.copy_file "/etc", "passwd" print_something works fine, but with copy_file I get this error: undefined method `cookbook_file' for Chef::Recipe::EP::FileTools:Class It's clear to me that I don't know how to create libraries in Chef or I don't know some basic assumptions. Can anyone help me, please? I am looking for a solution of this problem (organize my code, libraries, use resources in classes) or, better, a good Chef documentation as I find the documentation very deficient in clarity and disorganized so that research through it is a pain.

• Using sudo /etc/init.d/httpd start complains for log file rights

  I created a custom log directory with the root account, and chmoded it to 777 teporarily. ls -la /var/mylogs/log/ total 16 drwxrwxrwx 2 root root 4096 Jun 24 06:27 . drwxr-xr-x 5 root root 4096 Jun 24 06:25 .. When I try to start the service from a user (lets say "myuser", which is in the sudoers files as myuser ALL=(ALL) ALL), it fails because of the permissions : sudo /etc/init.d/httpd start Starting httpd: (13)Permission denied: httpd: could not open error log file /var/mylogs/log/httpd_error.log. Unable to open logs However, the following is successfull : sudo bash /etc/init.d/http start So I guess these two methods are not equivalent, although to me doing sudo was the same than logging into the root account and issuing the commands. Any clue ? Thank you !

  I'm attempting to implement cross-domain HTTP access control without touching any code. I've got my Apache(2) server returning the correct Access Control headers with this block: Header set Access-Control-Allow-Origin "*" Header set Access-Control-Allow-Methods "POST, GET, OPTIONS" I now need to prevent Apache from executing my code when the browser sends a HTTP OPTIONS request (it's stored in the REQUEST_METHOD environment variable), returning 200 OK. How can I configure Apache to respond "200 OK" when the request method is OPTIONS? I've tried this mod_rewrite block, but the Access Control headers are lost. • Cannot install VS Team System 2008 on Windows 7 Ultimate (64bit)

  I am trying to install VS TS 2008 on W7 Ultimate (64bit), but I have run into errors during the setup. Please take note that I have tried to mount the iso to a virtual drive, and also extracted the iso contents to a local folder. Both methods have failed and produce the same error log below. [10/26/09,03:02:40] Runtime Pre-requisites: [2] Error: Installation failed for component Runtime Pre-requisites. MSI returned error code 1603 [10/26/09,03:02:42] VS70pgui: [2] DepCheck indicates Runtime Pre-requisites is not installed.   I want Flash to play without sound on my machine, and I want that preference to stick so that new sessions don't surprise me with sound. Using FlashBlock while trying to remember to disable sound every time a flash window is started doesn't do the trick for me -- it's too difficult to remember to check the mute status before and after playing videos. Previously, using Win 7 and Firefox, one could selectively disable sound from Flash plugins using the method described in this question. Older methods of disabling it included the plugin called FlashMute. FlashMute fails me even when this trick has been employed, and the volume method described in the previous question only works for the currently live session, resetting sound to maximum volume whenever the plugin container is restarted. What is the best way to disable Flash sound?

• Installing Chrome OS on HP Pavilion

  Trying to install Chrome OS on HP Pavillion tx1000. I changed the BIOS to boot from USB before hard drive, and created a bootable USB drive (SanDisk Cruzer 4GB). No matter how many ways I try to make the USB drive, the laptop hangs on the startup screen, and trying to open the Boot Order Options freezes on "Fixed disk 0: ...". On the other hand, without the USB plugged in, the computer continues, and displays "Initialized Mouse", and then onto the Boot Order Options. If you let it boot normally from the beginning, it starts up fine into Windows Vista. I am using Hexxeh's Chrome OS build. Here are the different methods I've tried for making the Bootable USB Drive: Hexxeh's Image Creator (for Mac) Making the USB device bootable (using these directions). I wrote the image using Win32DiskImager. Writing the image using Win32DiskImager (without making it bootable).

  Sometimes I work from home and I use either of these 2 methods: Teamviewer VPN + Remote desktop When I connect with VPN I am however unable to browse any websites on my own computer, which can be very inconvenient when I am basically waiting an hour for somebody else to finish his job to do a 5 minute job. It would be nice if I could still continue browsing. A solution for this is Teamviewer. With Teamviewer I can manage the other computer, without suffering the restrictions of using the VPN. Everybody in the working area however, can see me using my computer remotely and this is not a good situation either, especially during work hours. I would like a solution that allows me to continue browsing normally and still control my remote workstation, without other people seeing every move I make on the workstation.

  Which of the two methods of dta transfer trasfers data at a faster rate for smartphones and tablets? Standard WIFI, or MicroSD Cards? I wonder if it would be actually faster to access data on external storage then it would be to have the MicroSD card in my smartphone or tablet. Currently I have a class 10 32GB MicroSD card in my cell phone. I am looking to get the new Google Nexus tablet but it does not offer expandable internal storage. I wonder if that's really a detriment; because if WIFI is faster than MicroSD, then it would matter almost none at all that you couldn't expand the storage internally. If the case is that WIFI is faster, and people caught onto this, then people could save a lot of money on lower memory ipads/iphones/ipods, tablets, and smartphones!

  This is the Linux version of my Disabling mouse acceleration in Mac OS X question. Hopefully I'll get an answer this time. I am tired of mouse acceleration and want to have a completely linear mouse response. This is easily achievable through any of the 5 or so methods (some subtly implied) on the X.Org wiki page on pointer acceleration. However, they also disable velocity scaling. I don't want a 1:1 mapping between device and screen coordinates. I want a 1:N mapping where N is a constant. Any ideas?

• Computer hanged in the middle of bios flashing process

  I have a laptop: Toshiba Satellite c660-17j, today I decided to update BIOS. I've downloaded bios updater from manufacturer's web site, and in the middle of flashing process computer hanged. I was waiting more than 30 minutes, but nothing was changed on the screen, i've tryed to PRESS MORE BUTTONS, but there were no reactions, so i've turned it off by removing battery (all other methods failed, even pressing power button for ~10 secs). After that computer can't start. I understand, that there's MESS in BIOS chip, and it's possible to re-flash it with hardware programmer, but I don't have it. I remember, that on some PCs (even on my eeepc) there was possibility to re-flash bios by inserting usb flash-disk (with .dat file on it, which contained BIOS), and power on PC, while holding some keys combination, then PC was switching to BIOS programming mode and re-flashed BIOS, after that it was possible to boot up normaly. Is there a way to recover computer without hardware programming BIOS chip? p.s. sorry for my english.

  I'm using VMware 7.1.2 in Windows 7 with Ubuntu 11.04 as a guest OS. In the host OS (Windows 7), I can access the Internet without any problems but in the virtual machine I can't access the Internet. I've tried the following but with no success: Use all methods of connecting to the Internet in "Virtual Machine Settings": Bridged, NAT, Custom; none work. Used cabled and wireless connections on the PC - neither of them work. I've used Ubuntu in VMware for several months - previously the Internet was always accessible. Could the cause of this be because I upgraded to Ubuntu 11.04?

  Specifically, I want Korean (link), but I hope this helps other people in general. According to this page, it is only possible for Ultimate and Enterprise. Specifically, I'd like to enable my keyboard to type in Korean, and I specified Korean as the input language (Start - type "Input Languages", only result). Under the General tab, I selected Add, and specified Korean.. but it doesn't work, because the language pack isn't installed I presume. Would anyone know how to add different language input / packs to Windows 7 Home Premium? Also, I tried following this tutorial on adding a language pack to HP, but the .cab keeps disappearing so it will not work. Note: Unlike the link in the tutorial as well, I do not have an option to change the display language of Windows, only the option to change input methods.

• systemctl (Fedora 17) and interacting spawned processes's consoles

  Introduction I've recently upgraded to Fedora 17 and I'm getting used to the newer systemctl daemon manager versus shell init scripts. A feature I need on some of my daemons is the ability to interact with their consoles because unclean shutdowns not initiated by the process itself can cause database corruption. So, performing a systemctl stop service-name.service for example might cause irreversible data loss. These consoles read user input through stdin or similar methods, so what I've been doing on my old OS is to place those daemons foregrounded in a screen session, and I suspended that screen session with ^A ^z. It's also worth noting that I've now made systemctl do this automatically if the computer reboots, but it still doesn't solve my potential data corruption problem I'm trying to avoid. My Question Is there a way to use systemctl in order to directly interact with the console of processes it spawns? Can I hook a process through systemctl to get access to its console?   Respected low-level users of Mac OS, please, help. I'm trying programmatically to change height of window of safari (or other window). I'm was trying used AppleScript and AXUIElementSetAttributeValue of Carbon, but none of these methods can't increase the window bigger than the height of the screen. But, the width changes without any problems. I guess I'd be starting with something like SetWindowPos with SWP_NOSENDCHANGING flag under Win32. Maybe, you can disable this functionality, which monitors the size of the window or completely shutdown the one who is responsible for it? Note that I want to do this programmatically from an external process - I'm not asking how to control just my own app's window size and position. Thanks.

• Taskbar Disappears Over Remote Desktop Connection When Outside Local Network

  I've got a machine on my home network running Windows Server 2012 (Based on Win8) and rather than attach a monitor I remote desktop in and it works fine on my local network. The problem is, when I try to access it from outside my local network the taskbar disappears completely. When I minimize an application rather than minimize to the taskbar it simply closes the window as small as it can as if the taskbar never existed (see photos at ). I've messed with the connection properties (show/hide desktop background, etc.) with no luck. I've used the following methods to remote in and they all are fine when on the local network and taskbar-less from outside: Remote Desktop Connection on Mac Remote Desktop Connection on Windows Jump Desktop on iOS using RDP To access the computer from outside my local network I'm using a Linksys router and mapping to the server IP, port 3389. • How to verify if my copy operation is complete in Windows 7?

  Yesterday, I was leaving some job of copying a directory to run overnight. This morning however, I found the computer had restarted because of Windows Update or something. I was wondering if there is some way to check if the copy is complete? One way I guess would be check the last modified time of the copy, and when the system restarted. But I was wondering where to find the time when the system restarted? I was also wondering if where to find some logging files that have the records. I know Event Viewer, but don't know where to find within it. Other methods are welcome too. I also would like to hear suggestions for other ways to accomplish the copy instead of just simple copy and paste. Thanks and regards!

  I want to start doing a computer repair. I know that some issues may arise (what if I do something wrong and ruin the entire computer?). I'm not saying I'm not confident in my work, but accidents do happen sometimes. Now, the best solution this problem would be to simply just backup their entire computer and restore it if anything goes wrong. If I have an external HD, are there any available methods to create an entire image for the computer so no matter what I do, I can just reload it's last state?

• Nginx load distribution and multi-domain SSL

  I'm researching into the best methods of two new parts of our infrastructure, hopefully finding a single solution for both. 1) We're currently running a single application server, and we're going to be adding an additional application server and load balance between the two. 2) We handle a few thousand domains across the application server(s), and we're looking to support SSL. The best method i've come across so far is using nginx for it's Load Distribution to serve the requests to the application servers, and for it's SSL support. If a request is using SSL, nginx accepts the request on, terminates SSL and pipes to apache (app servers). Now, that's all good, but i'm yet to figure out how we can let nginx handle multiple domains using SSL. We're potentially looking at using UCC SSL Certs, so we can support 150 domains on a single certificate, with each cert on a single IP. I'm all new to this (My experience is just with physical load balancers and a single domains on SSL), so any advice would be very much appreciated.

  I have a request from our legal team to search a users' mailbox. the mailbox is 15gig and it is on exchange 2003. I am trying to run windows desktop search and google desktop. I have gotten them to index mailbox but getting the results into a folder to backup on cd is getting bit difficult. Windows desktop search and google desktop search does not allow you to copy results to another folder. Can anyone point me to right direction?   I'm in charge of a deployment of Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager 2012 R2. Currently, I'm working through the discovery methods and trying to decide how to enable automatic discovery of systems and users. On Microsoft's documentation, they warn that Configuration Manager Automatic Discovery traffic can get pretty significant if you aren't careful in your implementation. • Can't access server from external IP

  I have a problem with my web server; I can't access it from the external IP address. I'm using an IIS 7 server, but I've tried with apache on Linux as well. I have forwarded all traffic on port 80 to my computer, but it just won't work. I've done port forwarding with my Minecraft server, and it did work, but when I try it with a web server, no. I've been looking on many many forums, but their methods don't work for me. My router is a Speedport W 723V, if anyone knows that one. Any help is appreciated.
