• What do developers want to learn at their next startup?

  As a developer, i know how much I like learning new stuff. Now that I'm hiring developers for my startup, I know I can't compete with Google's zillion-dollar bonuses and fancy cafeterias, but we are rich with opportunities for curious people to learn. I want to set things up to support that. So if you're a developer likely to join a startup, what do you want to learn? Product things? Business things? User research, design, or tech ops things? Or if it's more technical learning you're after, do you want to go deeper in what you know (e.g., back end learning back end) or cross-train (e.g., front end learning back end)? Or is there something else entirely?

  I was reading jQuery's page for animate() http://api.jquery.com/animate/ Its examples don't mention about if using <a href="#" id="clickme">click me</a> ... $('#clickme').click(function() { $('#someDiv').animate({left: "+=60"}); }) we actually still have to return false like in the old days? $('#clickme').click(function() { $('#someDiv').animate({left: "+=60"}); return false; }) (but then, those examples didn't use a <a> for the "click me"... but used something else. Otherwise the page will jump back to the beginning of the page? Does jQuery have a more elegant or magical way of doing it?

• What are the Options for Storing Hierarchical Data in a Relational Database?

  Good Overviews One more Nested Intervals vs. Adjacency List comparison: the best comparison of Adjacency List, Materialized Path, Nested Set and Nested Interval I've found. Models for hierarchical data: slides with good explanations of tradeoffs and example usage Representing hierarchies in MySQL: very good overview of Nested Set in particular Hierarchical data in RDBMSs: most comprehensive and well organized set of links I've seen, but not much in the way on explanation Options Ones I am aware of and general features: Adjacency List: Columns: ID, ParentID Easy to implement. Cheap node moves, inserts, and deletes. Expensive to find level (can store as a computed column), ancestry & descendants (Bridge Hierarchy combined with level column can solve), path (Lineage Column can solve). Use Common Table Expressions in those databases that support them to traverse. Nested Set (a.k.a Modified Preorder Tree Traversal) First described by Joe Celko - covered in depth in his book Trees and Hierarchies in SQL for Smarties Columns: Left, Right Cheap level, ancestry, descendants Compared to Adjacency List, moves, inserts, deletes more expensive. Requires a specific sort order (e.g. created). So sorting all descendants in a different order requires additional work. Nested Intervals Combination of Nested Sets and Materialized Path where left/right columns are floating point decimals instead of integers and encode the path information. Bridge Table (a.k.a. Closure Table: some good ideas about how to use triggers for maintaining this approach) Columns: ancestor, descendant Stands apart from table it describes. Can include some nodes in more than one hierarchy. Cheap ancestry and descendants (albeit not in what order) For complete knowledge of a hierarchy needs to be combined with another option. Flat Table A modification of the Adjacency List that adds a Level and Rank (e.g. ordering) column to each record. • Editing Neo Slider to move in one direction

  I have a website with brandspace theme from pixelentity. Currently, the slider move from right to left ( auto transition) . But, when the slider reaches the last image, it will go back to the first image by making all previous images sliding back from left to right. I want to make the slider to have a normal transition,i.e. going back to first image but still with the image sliding from right to left. • C# - Moving a control to the mouse's position

  Hello everybody. I am trying to get a control to follow the cursor when the user clicks and drag the control. The problem is that 1.) the control doesn't go to the mouse's position, and 2.) the control flickers and flies all over the place. I've tried a few different methods of doing this, but all so far have failed. I've tried: protected override void OnMouseDown(MouseEventArgs e) { while (e.Button == System.Windows.Forms.MouseButtons.Left) { this.Location = e.Location; } } and protected override void OnMouseMove(MouseEventArgs e) { while (e.Button == System.Windows.Forms.MouseButtons.Left) { this.Location = e.Location; } } but neither of these work. Any help is appreciated, and thanks in advance!

  2 questions, i was doing nothing productive, and tried selecting the google home page (a left click drag and select whole page) on google.com i see that beside the search box, on the left side, there is an empty space &nbsp; i looked up the source code and there indeed was a <td width=25%>&nbsp;</td> stupid as it may sound, but i was still curious to know why the blank space is out there..or is it just a simple typo?? :) also, any idea what window.lol&&lol() does? curious yet again, google search didnt get me any result and i thought i would turn to stackoverflow to enlighten me... thanks, ivar

• Checkbox vs Two Radio Buttons - Which one is more usable?

  I'm currently working on some setting screens, most of which contain a 2 column form with a preference question on the left, and a form element on the right. The questions are things like: Can add/edit other users? Can delete clients? Obviously this setting is a binary setting and most UI "experts" would insist that a checkbox is the appropriate form element to use. However, when I mocked up the form with the checkboxes it looked unfriendly and it seemed hard to relate the state of the checkbox back to the question. I changed the form to use two radio buttons instead: Yes o No Personally I find this easier to process, as the options are actually answers to the question posed on the left. In terms of clicking it makes no difference to the user, it's a single click each time to change the setting. What do you think of this use of radio buttons? Is this better or worse than a checkbox and why?

• Updating DetailViewController from RootController

  I'm trying to create an iPad application with a similar user interface to Apple's Mail application, i.e: RootView controller (table view) on the left hand side of the split view for navigation with a multiple view hierarchy. When a table cell is selected a new table view is pushed on the left hand side The new view on the left side can update the detail view. I can accomplish both tasks BUT NOT TOGETHER. I mean I can make a multi-level table view in the RootController.(HERE you can find the working source code). Or I can make a single-level table view in the RootController which can update the detailViewController (here there is the source code:http://www.megaupload.com/?d=D6L0463G). Can anyone tell me how to make a multi-level table in the RootController which can update a detailViewController? • How do I get a div to float to the bottom of its container?

  I have floated images and inset boxes at the top of a container using float:right (or left) many times. Recently I hit a need to float a div at the bottom right corner of another div with the normal text wrap that you get with float (text wrapped above and to the left only). I thought this must be relatively easy even though float has no bottom value but I haven't been able to do it using a number of techniques and searching the web hasn't come up with anything other than using absolute positioning but this doesn't give the correct word wrap behaviour. I had thought this would be a very common design but apparently it isn't. If nobody has a suggestion I'll have to break my text up into separate boxes and align the div manually but that is rather precarious and I'd hate to have to do it on every page that needs it.

• Mounting Samba share whenever it's available, unmounting when it's not

  I am trying setup permanent samba share mounts. That's not too hard using these instructions. But, I want them to Automatically remount whenever I join the network where these shares are available. Automatically unmount (or make access requests fail immediately instead of hanging) whenever I leave the network, i.e. avoid this automatically. Googling suggests that AutoFS might be helpful. I gather it takes care of the 1. above but I am not sure about the 2. The other questions about automated Samba mounts, i.e. How to mount a samba share permanently?, do not seem to address automatic remounts/unmounts, so I think this is not a duplicate. Thanks.

  The usual definition for a specialization of a template function is something like this: class Foo { [...] }; namespace std { template<> void swap(Foo& left, Foo& right) { [...] } } // namespace std But how do you properly define the specialization when the type it's specialized on is itself a template? Here's what I've got: template <size_t Bits> class fixed { [...] }; namespace std { template<size_t Bits> void swap(fixed<Bits>& left, fixed<Bits>& right) { [...] } } // namespace std Is this the right way to declare swap? It's supposed to be a specialization of the template function std::swap, but I can't tell whether the compiler is seeing it as such, or whether it thinks that it's an overload of it or something.

• How to have a UISwipeGestureRecognizer AND UIPanGestureRecognizer work on the same view

  How would you setup the gesture recognizers so that you could have a UISwipeGestureRecognizer and a UIPanGestureRecognizer work at the same time? Such that if you touch and move quickly (quick swipe) it detects the gesture as a swipe but if you touch then move (short delay between touch & move) it detects it as a pan? I've tried various permutations of requireGestureRecognizerToFail and that didn't help exactly, it made it so that if the SwipeGesture was left then my pan gesture would work up, down and right but any movement left was detected by the swipe gesture.

• Lead/Manager vs Individual contributor which is better?

  Currently I am working in a company as a Manager (software dev). But I only have 6.8 yrs experience. I joined this company as a software engineer and got promoted to SSE, Lead and Manager. Some of my team members are having better experience than me, and I feel like I need to have more exposure/experience to take these roles. I feel like it is better to be an individual contributor learn many things for another couple of years and become a Principal Software Engineer, rather than involving in Management. Options I have: 1. Ask my current employer to make me an individual contributor? 2. Find a new company and join as an SSE to start over? 3. Find a new company for a lead position? Please advice.
