• Windows 7 has trouble installing software with Visual C++ 2005 & 2008

  I have been reinstalling Windows 7 over and over again on an ASUS P5lD2 2Gb Ram 3Ghz P4 because it ultimately loses the contents of "Turn Windows Features On or Off" after I install software like Autocad 2010 & Microsoft Office 2007. I get install errors like 1935 and 1704 on the way tried different fixes at different times (install software in different order to try and isolate problem too). Ultimately I force the software to install after much buggering and end up losing the contents of "TWFOOO" Should I be installing some older items like .net framework 1.1, 2.0 and Visual Studio items like vcredist_x86.exe? getting a bit lost because of compounded problems...

• Why is hibernation still used?

  I've never quite understood the original purpose of the Hibernation power state in Windows. I understand how it works, what processes take place, and what happens when you boot back up from Hibernate, but I've never truly understood why it's used. With today's technology, most notably with SSDs, RAM and CPUs becoming faster and faster, a cold boot on a clean/efficient Windows installation can be pretty fast (for some people, mere seconds from pushing the power button). Standby is even faster, sometimes instantaneous. Even SATA drives from 5-6 years ago can accomplish these fast boot times. Hibernation seems pointless to me when modern technology is considered, but perhaps there are applications that I'm not considering. What was the original purpose behind hibernation, and why do people still use it? Edit: I rescind my comment about hibernation being obsolete, as it obviously has very practical applications to laptops and mobile PCs, considering the power restrictions. I was mostly referring to hibernation being used on a desktop.

• Squid Proxy Server: limit total bandwidth

  Hello my dear friends! We have a marvellous squid proxy with dansguardian for filetering and they both work just great. Is there any easy way to limit the total bandwidth usage? I'd like to set the max amount of squid users internet use to 1200 since our total band is 2000 and I need the rest to ensure other services such as voip to work without hiccups related to huge downloads on the "internet side" of our connection and similar issues. I mean a total squid bandwidth limitation and not a user-based. Fair thanks to everybody.

• Looking for Mini itx capable of running Photoshop + Illustrator (cs4 or higher)

  Ok, so I want to build a small pc for my gf that she can take with her instead of the crappy laptop that she has. Overall I think the complete system should not weight more than 10 lbs. The requirements are to run at least 4 applications simultaneously, and be able to switch between them with no problems: Photoshop Illustrator Word editor Browser Should be able to handle 1920x1200 resolution. I am currently looking at LGA775 socket as I can just transfer my desktop cpu Q6600 to it. Currently deciding between DQ45EK and DG41TX, but any other suggestions are welcome. So I am thinking something along the lines of: MINI-BOX M350 Case with 90 watt psu Q6600 cpu (my desktop cpu) 2x2GB kingston ram (or similar) Video? Need external or built-in G45 on DQ45EK will do? My primary concern is whether the 90WATT is sufficient of the Q6600? Thanks

• Restrict Overriding memory_limit in php.ini

  We have a issue that just came to our notice, some of our developers used ini_set('memory_limit', -1) to over-ride the php.ini memory_limit settings in their code files. Due to which sometimes our Memory/CPU usage is way far more than usual and we even have experienced server hanging/crashing many times. Is there any way to restrict these changes for certain params like memory_limit, upload_max_filesize & post_max_size? Users should not be able to edit them after a certain limit set? Sorry if i asked a dumb question, tried searching but there was no reference to this only found answers asking for increasing these parameters.

  I am trying to push my server's CPU cores to the max, but no success. Encoding 2-pass style, set my "-threads" to 128 . When running 2nd pass , the CPU seems to be at 98% usage, but first pass run totally ignores "-threads" option. Using libx264 . • DVI to HDMI - displaying bad.

  I currently have a computer with a ASUS EAH5770 (ATi Radeon HD 5770) 1GB GDDR5 video card, and 4GB ram, 2.6 GHZ i5 processor. I just switched from a DVI (the blue one) to an HDMI cable. (Bigben Flat cable HDMI 1.3c) I use a Samsung SyncMaster 2032 MW, which has a HDMI input. The weird thing is, that my screen is off-the-corner of the tv (so it's too wide) (1920x1080), and windows icons and text are not displaying well, though 1080p videos in YouTube are looking brilliant, just like pictures. So i think it has something to do with Windows. I already have the ATI Catalyst Control Center with the drivers i received with my video card. I do not currently know how to fix these problems. Do i have to reinstall Windows or so? Or is it (hopefully) easier?

• Media center consumes all available memory when attempting to play music off of a server

  I have Windows 7 Ultimate, and recently, when i try to play a song off of my Twonky Media Server/Windows Media Connect (based on an HP WHS with an Atom), it plays choppily. When i open Resource Monitor, it shows that after ordering the music to play, memory usage rapidly spikes to consume most, if not all, of the available memory on my system (excluding a couple hundred megabytes in standby). Why does it do this and is there anything i can do to stop it? Edit: it happens when I attempt to browse the server's music, not just when i play music. Edit 2: the "ehshell" process is what consumes the memory, appears to me something specific to media center. Moreover, the ehshell process doesn't die in this case. Edit 3: It only happens when browsing my Twonky library, and not my Windows Media Connect.

  How do I enter normal text in Microsoft Paint? Normally I don't have any problems adding text to an image in Paint. But I ran into this problem: The text is supposed to be "abcdefd" (entered in a text editor and pasted). The same characters appear if typed directly. So apparently it is using some other character set. How do I restore normal operation? Platform: MS Paint 5.2, Windows XP Professional x64 SP2, 8 GB RAM.

  Can you help me with understanding of reliability of network adapters. Most of the time servers do have at least 2 NIC's bonded to provide sort of a HA for it. So in case of one NIC fails, the second would still do the job. I wonder which factors work when you use network adapters. I know that, the most important and weakest part of any computer system is: storage (i.e HDD). but how reliable actually network adapters are? There are more expensive ones, and cheaper adapters. In which cases do they actually fail? In what circumstances. May it be a intensive usage of them Time when it's on In your experience how often you found yourself changing NIC's due to their fail? Or just what's the typical lifetime of commodity NIC's? thanks.

• What causes Windows Boot to stall?

  For about 6 months now I have been having this weird problem where Windows 7 fails to fully boot correctly. What happens is this. Starting Windows shows up on the screen. Then 3 out of 4 times nothing else happens, no Windows Flag animation, just nothing occurs. After 3 or 4 restarts repeating steps 1-2 above, the Windows Flag animation finally shows up and everything works as expected. My question is what is causing this problem in steps 1 and 2? Because I have tried the following with no luck: Error checking and correcting of any disk errors Updating drivers Doing a clean install of Windows 7 My setup is as follows: Windows 7 64-bit Ultimate 8 GB RAM 128 GB Crucial SSD (firmware 0005) Dell Latitude E6410 Intel Wireless and Graphics Other than what I have tried above I am totally out of ideas and looking for some new ones to try.

• BSOD when playing Portal 2 using ATI Radeon 4800 on H61M/U3S3 mobo

  playing Portal 2 will always give me blue screen of death, usually after about 10 minutes of playing. BSOD references atikmpag.sys. I have tried several updates for graphics driver and through ATI Catalyst Center. I have updated the motherboard BIOS. My RAM is OK. Nothing changes. I had previously run the game fine, then I removed my video card to use on-board graphics once, and after re-installing the video card, I get this problem every time. • PC boots on then off & 30 sec. later on again, it wiil shut off on itself mostly in idle or just unexpecticly

  This problem started w/ my sons desktop, it would just shut off after a bit of work or stay on for a long time & to get it to unfreeze is to cold boot it, i put a new HDD in & I still have the same issue, RAM is good power supply fan is moving quite as well as all the rest of the fans it has stayed fairly dust free, i'm at a loss ,I have defaulted all the factory settings changed battery & ungraded to a new OS. I still have the same problem. the power light stays on after it has shut down & when upon starting it goes straight to safe mode option page, I start in last good config. reboots again takes 30 sec. to boot & will work again for a while, the only other thing I haven't tried was a graphic card replace, i'm onboard video now & have been.

• Missing disk space in Windows XP

  On my mother's Lenovo laptop, Windows XP claims that the hard drive is almost full. According to the properties window, 52.7 out of 55.2 GB is in use: By deleting temp files from Internet Explorer, System Restore, Recycle bin, Windows Update, System Cleanup, I managed to free up about one GB. That's still 50 GB in use, which still is a lot more than I expected. Hence, I gave good old WinDirStat a spin, and here's the output: It might be hard to read here, but the first line says that the total amount of disk space in use on drive C is 24.3 GB. So Windows claims usage of 52.7 GB and WinDirStat can only account for 24.3 GB. Where is the other half of that disk space being used? I hope someone has an answer, or some tricks or tips to do further research. UPDATE: The laptop in question has an SSD hard drive. I am aware that these disk (at least the earlier ones) have a limited life-time. Could the symptoms described be caused by wear and tear on the SSD?

For this, I need a CLI-based monitoring tool that keeps me giving information about the resource usage of each VM, because it might be the case that due to over-provisioning of resources, VMs on a particular host are running very slowly depending on the benchmarks/programs each VM is running, and then I need to migrate a VM to another host and so on. • sp_releaseapplock timeout expired cause?

  I've been using a combination of sp_getapplock and sp_releaseapplock for some custom application locking purposes for years now with success and just the last few days I've started to get some timeout expired errors on a sp_releaseapplock which is a bit puzzling. When listing the current locks, there's less than a dozen of these active, and the rest of the dedicated server is way underutilized at the moment (less than 100 batches/sec with a mutli-processor, 32GB Ram, higher end machine.) Is there a specific resource to be monitored that may point me in the right direction for determing why such a lightweight operation is timing out? This is called within a stored proc with a timeout of 120 seconds which seems to be amazingly long for this operation to timeout on. SQL 2000 SP4 running on Windows 2003 Server. • How to backup data on debian vps to dropbox?

  I have really simple private VPS with some webpages and music server. I want to backup some configs and some scripts to dropbox or similar service. Server has no gui (except simple ssh X forwarding, which is neither convenient for constant usage and does not provide full desktop) everything is controlled through ssh. So my question would is it possible to setup dropbox client for command line use? How? Is there any alternatives for dropbox, which would have command line clients? Also is it possible to incorporate backup into script for cron job?

• I have static noise in my speakers and headset

  I have been having a problem with my computer where I am constantly getting static from the point I turn on my PC. I have changed Towers, Hard Drives, added and removed a Sound Blaster Xtreme Sound Card, used 3 different Headsets, and 2 sets of speakers. Lately I have noticed random dips in my frame rates when playing games. Is there any possibility that the graphics card could be causing the static with the possibility of it needing to go in for repairs? • Installing ruby 1.9.1 on OS X with RVM, getting error I can't make sense of

I found a tutorial that tells me how to do it with RVM and I get as far as downloading, configuring and compiling the version I want, but during the compile I get errors.   How to access Windows Registry from DOS? I need to access registry from DOS, while I boot from DOS bootable disk. I've searched all the internet, and found only Offline NT Password and Registry Editor, which can not be used in DOS, as I understand. Also I've found RegView (from many mirrors), which isn't working too (I've tried many instructions). Is there any easy-in-usage tool, like reg.exe, which is able to load registry hives, so that I can change registry values?? Or any working instructions ?? • Will a higher hard drive size affect performance

  My laptop came with a 500 GB hard drive. I use my laptop for storing my digital photographs, and only have about 14 GB of file storage left on the original hard drive. I have a 750 GB external hard drive, but am leery of relying on it for primary storage as I tend to knock things over and it has already crashed once and I lost a lot of the files. I am looking at a 1 TB internal hard drive, but am concerned if storing so much data will affect the computer's performance. Should I also increase RAM from 4 to 8 GB (the limit for my 64-bit, Windows 7, Asus A54C laptop)?

  I explain my case: I'm at Amazon AWS and I want to be fault tolerant on a entire region failure. My basic problem is to have the db in sync with 2 regions. My options: Master-Master (high lag) Hand made sync every 5 minutes Master-ColdMaster?! (copy on the fly but Master won't wait the other region commit) In my system we could afford loosing a piece of data (we're not a bank) the last inserts in the db, but we could not afford more than 10 minutes of downtime. The database is small and the level of inserts is low, and I wouldn't affect the normal usage waiting other region commit. Is the 3 solution posible? And the most important, once the primary fail how we can detect and change the rol between master-coldmaster -- coldmaster-master ? Is there any clean-mode to restore between failure? Thank's!
