• Computer turns off and on after start ..then goes dead

  I built a new PC from the following components: - CPU: Intel Core i7 950 - MB: Gigabyte X58A-UD3R - RAM: 2x2gb i7 Corsair memory - VGA: Zotac AMP2 GTX260 - HDD: 1 GreenSATA HDD (Western Digital 500gb RE2) When I turn it on, it goes for a few seconds, fans at maximum speed, then turns off. The again, it starts by itself.. and goes with fans on max speed, nothing happens. First I suspected my PSU. It's a Chieftec 450AA PSU. After I borrowed a Chieftec 550AA PSU, I tried to start with that. Exact same story. Any idea ? Do I need a bigger PSU? Reason why its not localized. I never seen this turn on, off, on. If you give answer for that, it would already help people like me, with the same problem.

• MySQL takes forever after running certain php scripts... optimization help?

  When I run a couple scripts from the vBulletin software (like uninstalling a plugin) it takes forever. When monitoring the memory usage, it shows this = -/+ buffers/cache: 158 381 Swap: 255 10 245 It seems that MySQL is only using a certain amount and once it does it tries to use the swap instead? I have a 512MB slice and right now my key buffer is at 16M and max_allowed_packet is at 16M. Is there something else I should increase or can I increase those variables and still be safe? Thanks.

• Intel Rapid Start Driver Reinstallation doesn't work?

  I recently had to reformat my entire drive and reinstall Windows 7. Something that bothers me is that when I was downloading the Intel Rapid Start driver (I have a Lenovo Ideapad Y480, and it comes standard with the Rapid Start) and tried to install it, the installer claimed that my system did not meet the requirements in order to install, when it was previously installed by the OEM. My startup times have increased from 21 seconds to log-in screen to 50 seconds. Please help...   I have a chat application using stack of Openfire, Tomcat6 and MySQL. Currently, i have installed all these servers on single Linux micro-instance(613 MB memory). Even in low user base 10-20 i am encountering CPU overload which is quite obvious here. As, i am new to Amazon EC2 can somebody suggest me how to scale up my architecture according to traffic use? should i use separate micro instances for every app server(openfire,mysql,tomcat6) should i use single small or medium instance for whole server stack. • Blue screen MEMORY_MANAGEMENT on Windows 7 Enterprise

  I'm running a machine (MSI GT 70) with 32 GB ram as a mobile server. It seems that at random points in time it will BSOD with as message MEMORY_MANAGEMENT. So the first thing I did was do several memtests, but they did not give away any defective modules. I'm a bit clueless at the moment as it just seems to happen at random points in time giving me little or no indication of what might be wrong. I opened up the dumps with BSODviewer, they just seem to point to the windows kernel. I tried reinstalling Windows but the behavior remains the same.

• Local dedicated hosting space (own hardware)

  Where can I find local dedicated hosting space for my own hardware? I know I can rent dedicated hosting from various companies online, but usually I think that means I'm renting their hardware too. I just need a space with a network connection and a power outlet. That's it. How much would this cost? What would I search for? Is it available easily? Or would it only be the sort of thing huge companies would do? I'm in the greater NYC area. It's for a project I'm working on, but the thing's loud and annoying. I'd be willing to pay a little to get it out of sight and out of mind. I don't even care too much about the quality of the network connection. I'd rather not rent other people's hardware cause it probably would cost a fortune to rent a machine like this (tons of ram).

• Suspected power supply issue? PC repeatedly whirs for some seconds and then dies.

  I've come home today and switched on the PC I've built a few months ago only for the machine to whir for a few short seconds and then die. It repeats this until I disconnect the power lead. Nothing is output to the screen and this cut out happens very quickly after switching it on. What could this be and how could it be fixed? Is it the power supply? I'm in despair :-( My spec is below, everything is new and was bought and assembled within the last 6months, system has been fantastic until now.   Hi there. I know this is hard question, and possibly not to be answered here, but if there is some article, or more you know about, please post a link. About books, its sad but many great computer books cannot be bought in my country. So, you can find many articles online, which says how memory was mapped back in pre x386 CPU. How there was explicit holes ready for MMIO BIOS, Video BIOS, etc. How there was A20 line for allowing higher memory access etc. Problem is, time changed. Today BIOSes are many times larger, and pure x86 16bit mode is used for booting and ROM flashing only. OS ignore BIOS as they access everything using drivers. And I just want to know, how it works today. I know not so specific question, but I read OS dev wiki, many articles, but all refering to days before massive usage of pure 32bit CPUs.

• cygwin rsync over ssh very slow

  I have 2 machines running Windows Xp SP3. I have cygwin installed on both, version 1.7. I have rsync and ssh installed on both, and configured using default settings as per ssh-host-config and ssh-user-config programs provided. I moved the public keys into their respective locations, and basically ssh is working fine. i began an rsync operation, using: rsync -av --delete --hard-links local_dir username@other_machine:/some_dir well... on both machines, the processor is running near idle, no heavy usage. I checked IO using process explorer on both machines, and that too is at normal levels (1~2 MB/s), so I can't see where the bottlenecks are, because network performance is aweful. I'm not going over 1MB/s... when a normal file copy using windows sharing achieves some ~10 MB/s.. What could be wrong?

• How can I throttle the bandwidth consumed by Windows Automatic Updates?

  We have many Windows XP computers sharing one connection to the internet. These machines are set to download all available automatic updates and then prompt the user to install them. Whenever Patch Tuesday rolls around, our internet usage pegs out, and remains that way for most of the day, and sometimes into the following Wednesday. This hurts! I still want the machines to start to download the updates as soon as they are available, but if it takes until Thursday or Friday before the last updates are downloaded, that's still better than the latency and dropped connections we are seeing now as a result of the internet connection bottleneck. What can I do to throttle back how rapidly each machine downloads the updates, while still having them all start the download process as soon as the updates are available? I have no desire to run a WSUS server. Also, the internet connection is more than enough, whenever there are no updates to download.

• Will I have internet connection issues next day, if I unplug router at night?

  I did this regularly a few years ago and used to feel like I was 'being punished' by the Interent svc provider for disabling access to my computer, because trying to re-connect the next day became a constant pain. I have the same linksys router, a comcast modem, and hi-speed broadband through their LAN. Question: who or what is at fault for lousy internet connections, slow connections, or no connections: (everybody's tech dept. blames everybody else) The router? 10 year olds, maybe obsolete? The modem? came with the service plan - can connect three devices on a sharedconnection. The ISP: I read they not only even control and completely regulate bandwidth usage, but they also ration it!! (true?) So can I safely 'pull the plug' each night for security or not? thnx

  Hello, I looked a bit but didn't see any duplicate of this so my question is which free(open source) OS do you use on servers and why do you use that OS? Background I have a VPS at Linode. There is a broad range of options for which OS I can put on it including both 32 and 64bit OSs. I just use it to run my small blog and for hosting random files. It's very low traffic. I have been using 64bit Arch Linux on my VPS and though I love the OS for general usage, for a server the constant breakage is troublesome. So I'm considering trying something new and am looking for suggestions.

• Commit charge peak higher than system limit

  We are seeing some very strange behaviour on our servers and google didn't turn up anything usefull, so I'm tossing it out here. A standard server is configured with 4GB Ram, 2 4GB pagefiles and running windows server 2003. The servers are running 50-120 vb6/.net applications which normally consume no more than 100mb of memory, but will occasionally run up to 300 mb. The issue with a single process spending way too much memory is being traced down somewhere else, but the thing that is baffling us is that the reported peak charge is vastly higher than what we have available. As the image above shows, we are getting reported peaks that are way higher than what the system is actually capable of delivering. This number has been seen as high as 29GB, which makes no sense at all for a system with a limit of 12GB. Does anyone have an idea what is going on?

• Firefox (on windows) constantly consuming 10% CPU - is there an add-in to find the rogue tab?

  I often have many Firefox windows open, each with many tabs. Now and then one of the tabs will be running a web page that for some reason consumes lots of resources. Right now, I have a tab somewhere that is constantly consuming 10% of the CPU...which would be fine as my computer can easily handle that (see specs below...all other apps are responsive), but it seems to slow Firefox down....everything, everywhere is extremely laggy in Firefox, I can see pauses while I type this. Is there: - a way I can isolate separate instances (or even tabs) in FF into a separate process, so one rogue tab doesn't bog down FF across the entire system? - maybe an add-in that can either identify tabs consuming lots of CPU, or maybe a way to "shut down" activity on tabs you haven't used in a while? • Out Of Memory Error - Magento

  Ok normally I understand when my server is giving me out of memory errors, but this one has me stumped! I'm running a magento based site, with one or two plugins in it and the rest is pretty basic. The site runs and loads fine wiht no issues. However in the backend - Configuration - Payment Methods it gives me the following out of memory error Fatal error: Out of memory (allocated 39059456) (tried to allocate 85 bytes) in ########/Varien/Simplexml/Element.php on line 84 Now this is where I'm confused..it's allocated more than it tried to allocate? Am I correct there? So how is it running out of memory? My server has 6Gb ram, an SSD and 2 CPU's running WHM with a few other low traffic sites on it. I set my php memory limit to 100mb, 1000mb and finally unlimited but all to no avail! I'm completely lost here, would really appreciate some expertise on this Cheers

• Red Hat 5.4 slow processing

  I'm running Red Hat Linux 5.4 on HP DL580 server with 16 processors and 64 GB of RAM. I'm connecting to the server remotely through SSH. after entering the password, it takes time to return the command line, if I click ctrl+c during this time, I'll have the command line prompt but not the correct bash prompt (I have to run bash to pass to my correct prompt). I tried to install Apache on the server, ./configure took 4 hours to finish instead of 1 or two minutes, Oracle installation same behavior. Server Disks are mirrored using RAID controller. any idea what could be the reason of this slowness?

• Ideal laptop specs for a Computer Science Masters student?

  I have a HP pavillion core 2 duo 2 GHz and 4 GB RAM, and it is painful to use this machine for any kind of coding. Eclipse (especially Juno) literally takes 5 minutes to load. And even after that, everything is lagy. Apart from school stuff, I also use my computer as a television. I watch Hulu, Netflix, YouTube etc in 720p, and this laptop gets hot as hell and the fans are loud enough to wake somebody up from deep sleep. I DON'T use my laptop for Gaming or Video/Photo Editing. I'm looking to buy a new laptop (in which most widely used IDEs would work smoothly and playing hi-def videos wouldn't be too much for the machine to handle) any suggestions (on hardware specs) would be greatly appreciated. • Using MongoDB + Redis + Apache on the same server in production?

  I intend to launch my web app using a 8 GB VPS. It uses MongoDB + Redis for storage/caching and Apache + PHP-FPM for serving requests. Could there be any issues with running Mongo + Redis + Apache on the same server? Would it make more sense to setup 2 x 4 GB VPS servers and keep Mongo on one and Redis + Apache on another? Should I just start with one server and worry about scaling horizontally later by delegating the existing server to Mongo in the future (due to its large RAM) and moving the web servers on to multiple smaller VPS'?

• Chipset GPU causes a massive slowdown

  My AMD Radeon HD 7700 recently broke (fan stopped working and GPU overheated), and now I'm running on internal chipset graphics, and it causes a massive slowdown of the whole PC. I've changed the graphics memory from 32MB (minimum) to 256MB (highest), and it hasn't made any difference whatsoever. I'm using Windows Aero, and disabling it should have made a small difference, but it didn't; the whole PC is still slow. I know that it's not the computer build, because I built it myself, and it was a lot faster when it had the AMD Radeon HD 7700 in it, which is the reason why I believe it's the internal chipset graphics that are causing the problem. Is this behavior normal? I don't have the cash right now to go out and buy a new dedicated GPU. I'm using an ASRock N68C-GS FX motherboard with an AMD FX 4100 (overclocked to 4.3GHZ), with 4GB RAM. The overclock was an attempt to resolve this issue, and it isn't related to this issue that the integrated graphics is causing a slowdown.

• Force Firefox 14 to free memory when opening/closing lots of popups

  I'm currently trying to run some tests on a web application using Selenium IDE with Firefox 14. The tests mainly consist in loading a page containing thousands of links and clicking on every of those links. Of course, each time a popup shows, I tell Selenium to close it and proceed with the remaining links. However, it seems that even if I close the popups, Firefox is not freeing memory. Usually, I end up with Firefox crashing after opening 1500 popups (around 2.5Gb of memory usage). Is there any way to force the browser to free memory? Maybe something I should set in about:config? Or is there a flaw with Selenium? Thanks.

  Welcome, I have question, i have working array md5 of 5 drives. We are running out of space. Server don't have big usage but it have to be online. We can't add another controller. I got idea to buy a USB drive case ? Does mdadm allow to mix array created on sata drives by controller and virtual usb ? (we don't boot from mdadm) But im not sure is this will work ? Is usb drives are configurated before mdadm demon start ? Regards
