• Problem with PPTP VPN and internet

  Hello, I have an internet connection the following way : Internet Modem <- FireWall(not a router, a firewall) <- PC Everything is setup so my pc has an external ip address, and my firewall takes care of blocking bad stuff. I connect by VPN to an external network, so I added a new connection using Windows Xp's "New connection wizard" (the vpn client that comes with Windows XP), it's a PPTP connection so I used all default settings. I put the PPTP server's IP, my username and password and I succesfully connected. I was able to have access to the external VPN ressources. The only problem is everytime I connect to this VPN, my computer cannot connect to the web anymore, no msn, no ping, no web. Is there anything special I should be doing?

• Best way to perform authentication on every request

  Hello. In my asp.net mvc 2 app, I'm wondering about the best way to implement this: For every incoming request I need to perform custom authorization before allowing the file to be served. (This is based on headers and contents of the querystring. If you're familiar with how Amazon S3 does rest authentication - exactly that). I'd like to do this in the most perfomant way possible, which probably means as light a touch as possible, with IIS doing as much of the actual work as possible. The service will need to handle GET requests, as well as writing new files coming in via POST/PUT requests. The requests are for an abitrary file, so it could be: GET http://storage.foo.com/bla/egg/foo18/something.bin POST http://storage.foo.com/else.txt Right now I've half implemented it using an IHttpHandler which handles all routes (with routes.RouteExistingFiles = true), but not sure if that's the best, or if I should be hooking into the lifecycle somewhere else? • Optimising (My)SQL Query

  I usually use ORM instead of SQL and I am slightly out of touch on the different JOINs... SELECT `order_invoice`.*, `client`.*, `order_product`.*, SUM(product.cost) as net FROM `order_invoice` LEFT JOIN `client` ON order_invoice.client_id = client.client_id LEFT JOIN `order_product` ON order_invoice.invoice_id = order_product.invoice_id LEFT JOIN `product` ON order_product.product_id = product.product_id WHERE (order_invoice.date_created >= '2009-01-01') AND (order_invoice.date_created <= '2009-02-01') GROUP BY `order_invoice`.`invoice_id` The tables/ columns are logically names... it's an shop type application... the query works... it's just very very slow... I use the Zend Framework and would usually use Zend_Db_Table_Row::find(Parent|Dependent)Row(set)('TableClass') but I have to make lots of joins and I thought it'll improve performance by doing it all in one query instead of hundreds... Can I improve the above query by using more appropriate JOINs or a different implementation? Many thanks.

• Ending tail -f started in a shell script

  I have the following. A Java process writing logs to the stdout A shell script starting the Java process Another shell script which executes the previous one and redirects the log I check the log file with the tail -f command for the success message. Even if I have exit 0 in the code I cannot end the tail -f process. Which doesn't let my script to finish. Is there any other way of doing this in Bash? • Logging upload attempt with proftpd

  I have a logging server that i use with external hardware, the idea is that a special hardware is uploading logs about it's operation every few hours and from the server i can do whatever i need to do with the information, the old server was getting a bit too old and i've moved to a new one, i've install lamp,proftpd and ssh (just the same as i had on the old server). now for some reason the logs are not being uploaded and i don't know why. the hardware uses a direct ftp access - i've the proftpd.log and saw that the connection is not being rejected (just to make sure i didn't make a mistake with the user/pass) my problem is that for some reason the upload itself is failing... it might be due to wrong path (as it's hard coded in the hardware) but i can't really know as proftpd wont give me any details.. i've tried to change the loglevel to "debug" thinking it would give me more information but i don't see any change... is there any other way i can make sure proftpd logs EVERTHING ?

My query is that, now to install the app on a device I have to add the provisioning profile of that device to xcode and after selecting the developer in build option in project info pane i build the project and send the build and provisioning profile to the user. Is there any to install the app without doing the above task of building the project with the provisioning profile. Means i have a build of an app and a newly downloaded provisioning profile. I will send the user both build and profile in a zip file. will the user be able to install the app on his/her device?

• Hourly CRON task running more frequently than one hour

  I have a cron task that calls a special PHP script via wget. Here is the crontab entry: 0 * * * * wget http://www.... It will work perfect for several days, running on the hour. However, after a few days the cron job will start to be called several times an hour. I have never seen CRON drift like this, so I imagine it can't really be a CRON issue. However, the logs of the script that is called clearly show it running several times an hour. Server details: Ubuntu Luci Apache MySQL PHP5 Time is showing correct @ command line Server is setup to sync with a NTP server In order for the script to run it must be passed a unique 50-character hash key in the URL, so this script isn't being called from any other source accidentally. What might cause CRON to drift like this?

I'm not very popular with hosting, but I have a special situation: I live in Tunisia, I can buy a domain name with .tn extention, but the problem is that: 1- The domain could not be pointed to a server outside Tunisia 2- All servers in Tunisia are bad, no one provides really reliable hosting so, I want to use the .tn domain with a basic hosting in Tunisia, and Make other db queries and rich media on another remote server outside Tunisia.   When installing MS SQL Server 2008, one needs to associate a service account with the installation (possibly even several accounts, one for the SQL Server Agent, one for Analysis Services, ..., but let's leave that for the case of simplicity). The service account may be local account, or a Windows domain account. If a domain account is used: Can MSSQL start, if connectivity to the domain controllers is temporarily down? If the answer is yes: Should each DBMS instance on each server have a separate account, or does it make sense to use a particular "MSSQL" domain account on all MSSQL-installations in the organization? If separate accounts are used for each instance on each server: Does it make sense to create a special MSSQL security group in the domain and place all the MSSQL service accounts in that group, perhaps to ease replication, etc? Is there a common, generally accepted naming convention for MSSQL service account(s)?

  I run BIND locally on my OS X machine, to enable wildcard Apache vhosts, which requires setting the DNS server for all network interfaces to 127.0.0.1. This works great, but means when I am on a network which uses an internal DNS server to route special (i.e. .companyname) URLs to a server on the network, the lookup fails. I tried adding both 127.0.0.1 and the DHCP provided DNS server, but this doesn't work either. Is there a way to make BIND use the DHCP DNS server for requests it cannot resolve locally?

• Microsoft CALs for Domain Controller

  I am designing a network and I've come to the point of specifying out the number of CALs required for this network. Microsoft licensing has always confused me, it's just not always clear to me. I plan to have 1 2008 std domain controller, another 2008 server (not a domain controller) and 200 Windows 7 devices connected to the domain for domain services. The 200 W7 devices will all authenticate to the domain controller with the same domain account. (this is a special type of network, not a user workstation network) Therefore, do I need to purchase 200 CALS for the 200 devices, or can I purchase say 10 CALS (user CALS) as the amount of unique user accounts is very low. • Updating rows using "in" operator in "where" clause

  Hi. I stumbled upon SQL behavior I don't understand. I needed to update several rows in a table at once; started with just finding them: SELECT * FROM some_table WHERE field1 IN (SELECT ...) This returned a selection of about 60 rows. Now I was pretty confident I got the subquery right, so I modified the first part only: UPDATE some_table SET field2 = some_value WHERE field1 IN (SELECT ...) In other words, this was exactly as the first query after the WHERE. However, it resulted in 0 rows updated, whereas I would expect those 60. Note that the statement above would change field2, i.e. I verified that some_value was not present in the selected rows. The subquery was a modestly complicated SQL piece with 2 (different) tables, 1 view, joins and its own WHERE clause. In case this matters, it happened with Oracle Database 10g. So, the question is, why UPDATE didn't touch the rows returned by SELECT?

I am looking to try to get a social network site up and running on Ruby on Rails and was looking at RailsSpace: Building a Social Networking Website with Ruby on Rails (Addison-Wesley Professional Ruby Series) - Paperback (July 30, 2007) by Michael Hartl. This was published in 2007, however, and the newer reviews say it is not very helpful. Does anyone know if there are any new publications out there that walk you through building a social network site while teaching you the code(rather than just using a out of the box program)? Thanks

• Super user in LDAP?

  I am running 10 Linux machines that is doing different types of work. The machines are configured to use LDAP authentication so when one user is configured in slapd he can login on all the machines. To make maintenance easier i want to create a root account in slapd so i can use this instead of the local root accounts when installing applications etc. but i am not sure on how to do this. Is it enough to create a user with the name root and gid/uid 0? should the local root be disabled somehow? I am fully aware that this is normally not a good idea from a security perspective, but as mentioned before this is a special case.

• How to handle customers with multiple addresses in CakePHP

  I'm putting together a system to track customer orders. Each order will have three addresses; a Main contact address, a billing address and a shipping address. I do not want to have columns in my orders table for the three addresses, I'd like to reference them from a separate table and have some way to enumerate the entry so I can determine if the addressing is main, shipping or billing. Does it make sense to create a column in the address table for AddressType and enumerate that or create another table - AddressTypes - that defines the address enumeration and link to that table? I have found other questions that touch on this topic and that is where I've taken my model. The problem I'm having is taking that into the cakePHP convention. I've been struggling to internalize the direction OneToMany relationships are formed - the way the documentation states feels backwards to me. Any help would be appreciated, Thanks!

• Hyper-V CPU Utilization, Good Tools?

  I just learned a ton from this post: Host CPU% doesn't include child VM CPU%, specifically I learned that both the 'host OS' and 'child VM' are siblings within the HyperVisor layer. Are there good utilities for 'watching' the total CPU and other resource counters at the HyperVisor (hardware) layer? I know perfmon (watching special Hyper-V CPU counters) is the standard answer, but I've stayed away from perfmon for ad-hoc monitoring. Is there a good OSS or free tools to 'watch' the resource utilization as I create multiple new VMs running on the server? I'm a developer, so if there aren't any good UI tools to surface this data I'd consider creating one, but only if needed. P.S. My specific scenario is I'm creating new web, SQL and back-end server VMs for new Windows 8 Server and SQL 2012 (entire application stack). I need to monitor them for utilization and know when I need to grow beyond 1 host (I'll need to split the VMs into separate hosts as I hit hardware limits of the 1st host, and diagnose problems).

• Accessing variable from ARGV

  I'm writing a cPanel postwwwact script, if you're not familiar with the script its run after a new account is created. it relies on the user account variable being passed to the script which i then use for various things (creating databases etc). However, I can't seem to find the right way to access the variable i want. I'm not that good with shell scripts so i'd appreciate some advice. I had read somewhere that the value i wanted would be included in $ARGV{'user'} but this simply gives "root" as opposed to the value i need. I've tried looping through all the arguments (list of arguments here) like this: #!/bin/sh for var do touch /root/testvars/$var done and the value i want is in there, i'm just not sure how to accurately target it. There's info here on doing this with PHP or Perl but i have to do this as a shell script. EDIT Ideally i would like to be able to call the variable by something other than $1 or $2 etc as this would create issues if an argument is added or removed Any ideas?

  I have a TreeView with check boxes, and when a user checks a child node, I want to go up the tree and check each parent. However, for some reason my application blows up whenever I touch the parent node. For the nodes in my tree, I've extended TreeNode to create my own objects with some data that I need to store in them, but I still reference them as TreeNodes when checking/unchecking.   Is search and replace the only way to rename as asp control in the code behind file? I find this extremely annoying, but it is the only way I can find. Scenario: I'll find a variable that needs renaming (Usually to meet naming convention) I'll rename the variable in the aspx/ascx file. I'll have to go in the code behind files and search and replace. I get annoyed Are there any better ways - preferably that would not touch a similarly named variable in another scope in the project. I'm on VS2008 with resharper -- does VS2010 address this perhaps?

  Hi all, here's my case, I have set up a share in a virtual windows server 2008 R2, the server is hosted by GoDaddy my question is, how do I access the server's public folders, I need to open a file locally (on the client) and to do that I need the server to show up in my Network locations, I have the right credentials and have created a special group that has access to the particular folder that I'm sharing the problem is I don't know how to add the server to my network locations. I have tried VPN Connection but it is my understanding that it cannot be done since it is virtual share server. Any help is trully appreciated.

So I think it should be best way to distribute my application to that XYZ organization. On further searching I found that there is also an - iPhone Developer Enterprise Program, which is available to companies with 500 or more employees and a Dun & Bradstreet number. So I want to know - which will be the best way for me according to my requirements ? Also I want to know that say if I choose Adhoc distribution then is there any way for automatic up-gradation in it ie. to install new version of my application on user's iPhone or iPod without deleting the old version.
