• Why are access modifiers on web service proxy methods important

  I'm creating interface to an external web service with C# client generated from WSDL. And in this client class I have methods with signature like: public ResponseType InvokeMethod(RequestType request). I want to change its access modifier to protected, but then web service responds with "web service method name is not valid" exception. Do You know why is that so? I understand that maintaining method name can be important for some reasons, but why can't I change this access modifier? Shouldn't it be a matter of my code what access I want to give to this method? Thanks for all the answers in advance.

• NO-SQL reliable for small bussines app?

  I'm deciding between go for a NON-SQL engine or a regular SQL one for a document managment system for small bussines. I have experience with firebird/sql server and found a good track of reliability (specially with firebird). This market is full of crappy "servers" (clon-made PC, the mayority), cheap harddisk, rarely use of RAID or anything like that, some are in locations where a power-off is normal, some not have a UPS, etc... (I will include off-site auto-backup to external servers, but that no change the internal setup). (I know about end-user education about such proper setups, but is stupid depend on that, so stick to te point) From the desing point of view, a schema-less database is the way to go for my system, but, I worry if any of the actual solutions (MongoDb, Tokyo Cabinet, etc) are like firebird and survice crash, malfunctions & abuse so data corruption is very rare. The plan is store the office documents there & provide a central repository.

  We have a Web Role that we are hosting in Windows Azure that uses an old ASMX based Web Reference to contact an external system. The Web Reference proxy code is big enough that instantiating it the first time has a significant cost. We'd like to be able to have this run when the Web Role starts instead of on the first request. I know IIS 7.5 has an Application Warm-Up module that would allow us to achieve this, but I'm having trouble figuring out if something similar exists with hosting on Windows Azure. Thanks, Corey

• Allowing connections initiated from outside

  I've got an old Juniper SSG5 running ScreenOS 5.4.0r6.0. Once a day, more or less, it'll start randomly dropping packets at a rate of ~5-10%. We currently solve this issue by simply rebooting the unit, after which it resumes working in perfect condition. As this error has started appearing randomly, without any configuration or hardware changes, I'm assuming I've got an aging unit about to fail. As such, I've got a replacement SSG5 running ScreenOS 6.0. I've dumped the config on the 5.4 and imported it into a clean 6.0, and it seems to gladly accept it, and all my configuration seems to be A-OK. However, upon connecting the new unit, all outside-initiated connections seem to be blocked. If I browse our external IP from the inside, everything works perfectly, and it's not just port 80, SSH, Crashplan - all of our policies route correctly. All normal networking, initiated from the inside, work perfectly as well. If on the other hand I browse our external IP from the outside, everything is blocked. Barring differences between ScreenOS 5.4 and 6.0, the config is identical.   I have an application that is an NSStatusItem. It has a few different modes, each of which require an external process to be launched, during which the icon is simply highlighted, and appears to be frozen. I want to use the -setImage method (or reasonable facsimile) to display something along the lines of a "spinner" commonly seen in web applications and all over OS X. Is there any native method for accomplishing this (e.g. some instance of NSProgressIndicator?) or must I manually display an animation by cycling through a set of images? In either case, how would I implement?

  Hi! I am struggling with the following scenario: an XML-message is created client-side and digitally signed using mozilla's window.crypto.signText. After signing, the message and the signature are transmitted via a webservice (.net) to the server. Everything is fine until this point. on the server, the XML shall be included in another XML-document, which is publicly accessible. The signature should be published as well in order to grant non-repudiation. Q: Is there a smooth option to convert the detached Pkcs#7 into XML-DSIG (e.g. functionality within the .net framework)?   Hi Everyone, I have written an application on my x64 machine in Visual Stuido 2008. The application will be sent to someone, and I have two questions that I need answers to. What requirements will they need to have installed. I am assuming the .NET 3.5 redistributable. Are there anything else though? (The application does not call any external dependencies). This is my realy question that I can't find the answer to. I have developed and build the application on my x64 machine using the "Any CPU" option (as versus x64 or x86 specifically). Will this run on a 32 bit machine? (I don't have one to test). Or do I need to build it specifically for x86 in order to run it on a 32 bit machine? Many thanks, Brett

  We make use of a java application that manages a pinpad via the serial port. This works perfectly on windows with the Sun Comm.jar, the supplied dll and the properties file. Now we are attempting to use this solution on Linux (actually it does run on various other flavours of linux out in the field) - with Ubuntu server mode. After much attempts - blood, sweat and almost tears we have this scenario: Java version 1.4.2_17 Linux - Ubuntu Comm libs - Comm3 supplied by sun with the default driver specified An external comm test shows the comm ports: /dev/ttyS0 and /dev/ttyS1 But the java application says unable to open port /dev/ttyS1 (using the RXRT files produces invalid port errors) Has anyone been able to use java 1.4.2 on linux for serial port communication and found a solution that I could apply in my scenario? greatly appreciated Phill

  I'm loading a Bitmap from a jpg file. If the image is not 24bit RGB, I'd like to convert it. The conversion should be fairly fast. The images I'm loading are up to huge (9000*9000 pixel with a compressed size of 40-50MB). How can this be done? Btw: I don't want to use any external libraries if possible. But if you know of an open source utility class performing the most common imaging tasks, I'd be happy to hear about it. Thanks in advance.

  Hi, I'm about to deploy to production a fairly complex site and for the first time need a staging environment where I can test things in a more realistic environment, especially with regard to some external services that cannot be run locally. My general plan is to develop & test first locally, push simple changes (small bug fixes, HTML/CSS, JS, etc) direct to production, and for larger changes, push first to staging subdomain for thorough testing and then to production. I don't think that I need to keep the staging and production databases in sync (occasional manual updating would do) but I'm wondering if there are any general good practices with regard to maintaing a staging environment in relation to a production environment, especially when it comes to databases. Any general thoughts/advice/experience would be appreciated.

I need some lib with simple function like "Render String Var conteining HTML" So no external files (like in flash lib called HTMLwraper you just have to play your SWF on top of HTML). dinamic! I give it string it renders It into some conteiner (not as a bitmab but as if it was real HTML dynamically rendered in flash). (And I need real HTML + CSS support not what normal rich text block gives us) I am going to use it in with Flex (Flash Builder) so I like MXML component model but even pure flash AS3 will workout. It should be Free and Opensource (any license like GPL, LGPL etc will be ok). So Is out there such flash\flex library for HTML + CSS dynamic rendering (rfom given String or XML)?

Given that WCF binding uses net.msmq:// URL, for instance net.msmq://server/private/nc_queue, how can one know what is the actual MSMQ address to which this URL is translated? Is there some kind of a trace that can be activated? Or an external tool that would help one capture the address? Thanks. EDIT1 OK, I owe a clarification. One can talk directly to MSMQ through the respective .NET API. In the case of MSMQ over its native port 1801, I would use this MSMQ address: FormatName:Direct=OS:server\private$\nc_queue When MSMQ is configured over HTTP, the address changes to something like this: FormatName:Direct=http://server/msmq/nc_queue But the WCF binding uses a standard URL to describe the address, like: net.msmq://server/private/nc_queue So, how can I know what is the actual MSMQ address (the one with the FormatName) to which the net.msmq:// is translated?

  Previously I had thought that there were only ways to get content from external URLs into your page. These 2 ways are use an IFRAME or Javascript to include it into your pages. I've just learned of a new way using the tag. <object type="text/html" frameborder="0" data="http://Server/URL/"></object> I have found some content online that confirms this ability, but it doesn't talk much about features such as Accessibility and SEO of the page. Does anyone have any experience with this? Is there any information available regarding using this method and how it effects Accessibility and SEO?

• Master / Detail datagridview with relation from type string in C#

  Hello, I want to show a master / detail relationship using two datagridviews and DataRelation in C#. The relation between the master and the detail table is an ID from type string (and there is no chance to change the ID to type integer). It seems like the DataGridView is not able to update the detail view when changing the row in the master table. Does anybody know if it is possible to achieve a master / detail view using a string ID and if yes, how? Or do I have to use an external DataGrid from another company? Thanks for any help Daniel

• How can you centre an image within the image control in SQL Server Reporting Services 2008?

  I have got an image in an image control on a report in SSRS 2008. The image is coming from an external source, and varies in width. I would like to centre the image within the control, but the image control does not have an equivalent of the text box's TextAlign property to allow right/left/center alignment to be done automatically. I have seen methods to dynamically calculate the amount of left padding as a hack to solve this, http://blogs.msdn.com/chrishays/archive/2004/10/27/CenteredImages.aspx, but the solution gives an error in SSRS 2008, perhaps not surprising given the age of the article. Has anybody got a solution to this for SSRS 2008?

• What should I use for the .SWF path in FlowPlayer's configuration if I'm developing from my desktop?

  I'm having an extremely difficulty time getting the flowplayer to show up and the worst part is I have no idea what is wrong because I'm not getting any error messages! I have an external javascript file: C:/desktop/mysite/js/jq/plugins.js calling $f() from: C:/desktop/mysite/thirdparty/flowplayer/flowplayer.js the swf files also live there... • Should I put my output files in source control?

  I've been asked to put every single file in my project under source control, including the database file (not the schema, the complete file). This seems wrong to me, but I can't explain it. Every resource I find about source control tells me not to put generated output files in a source control system. And I understand, it's not "source" files. However, I've been presented with the following reasoning: Who cares? We have plenty of bandwidth. I don't mind having to resolve a conflict each time I get the latest revision, it's just one click It's so much more convenient than having to think about good ignore files Also, if I have to add an external DLL file in the bin folder now, I can't forget to put it in source control, as the bin folder is not being ignored now. The simple solution for the last bullet-point is to add the file in a libraries folder and reference it from the project. Please explain if and why putting generated output files under source control is wrong.

• Embedded Prolog Interpreter/Compiler for Java

  I'm working on an application in Java, that needs to do some complex logic rule deductions as part of its functionality. I'd like to code my logic deductions in Prolog or some other logic/constraint programming language, instead of Java, as I believe the resulting code will be significantly simpler and more maintainable. I Googled for embedded Java implementations on Prolog, and found number of them, each with very little documentation. My (modest) selection criteria are: should be embeddable in Java (e.g. can be bundled up with my java package instead of requiring any native installations on external programs) simple interface to use from Java (for initiating deductions, inspecting results, and adding rules) come with at least a few examples on how to use it doesn't necessarely have to be Prolog, but other logic/constraint programming languages with the above criteria would suit my needs, too. What choices do I have and what are their advantages and disadvantages?

  Hello, A bunch of my JavaScript code is in an external file called helpers.js. Inside the HTML that calls this JavaScript code I find myself in need of knowing if a certain function from helpers.js has been called. I have attempted to create a global variable by defining: var myFunctionTag = true; In global scope both in my HTML code and in helpers.js. • Want to load jquery dialog from a different web-page

  I'm a bit of a n00b with jquery so this one is probably an RTFM question: I'm writing an application to create a somewhat complex record for my client. Building the record requires doing a couple of server side searches inside a dialog. Right now I have everything framed up in 1 file (asp.net) and it's ok. But I can see as I add the business logic and the communication with the server this is going to get really ugly. I'm alreay putting most of the javascript in external files, but I'd like to move the HTML for the dialogs out too. How do I get the jquery dialog method to load the dialog body from the html files? Something like: getDialogHTML(dialogHolderDiv); <---magic goes here var dialogOptions = { ... }; $("#"+dialogHolderDiv).dialog(dialogOptions); $("#"+dialogHolderDiv).dialog('open'); any help will be apperciated .
