  • When booting from grub2 menu, why does only the Primary OS that installed the boot loader get the nice splash?

    It isn't a real problem, but if there is a way to fix it, I would like to. I have several Ubuntu installations on one computer, but on boot and shutdown, only the primary installation that grub was installed to the MBR from has a nice resolution and boot splash. All the other installations boot splash's are a blinking cursor on a black screen, and the resolution is ugly, on boot as well as shutdown. Why is this? and Can I make it so that my Ubuntu 12.04 have a nice boot again, like my 12.10 now does (because its grub wrote over MBR)?

I hope to compile a list here to use as reference for all new Windows installs/restores. See this Question. I am also looking into automating this, but actually looking for the most recent version from each site. Any thoughts on this would be appreciated!

  • How can I migrate all keyboard shortcuts from one mac to another?

    I have a lot of custom keyboard shortcuts and will be migration Macs. I tested Migration Assistant and it did not seem to get these. I read somewhere that they are stored in the individual application's plist files in the ~/Library/Application Support folder but even after copying a few of these folders over the shortcuts do not seem to follow. How can I get all of the keyboard shortcuts migrated to a new mac?

  • On my Mac, under the 'Shared' folder it shows another computer in my house, am I hacked?

    I didnt' setup any connection to another computer in my house (its a PC), and I just noticed under my 'Shared' folder in the file explorer on my Mac laptop I see the name of the PC. How could this have shown up when I didn't even try to connect to it before? Could I possibly be hacked or is this normal it just scanned our internal wireless network? I havent' setup any kind of network really, just have a wireless modem that other computers share.

  • New laptop, Windows 8.1, attempting dual install. Ubuntu installer doesn't 'see' existing OS

    Though I've used Ubuntu for a few years, I'm new to installation. Previously I had help and now I'm doing it alone (moved across the world). Windows 8.1 came preinstalled on my new laptop (Toshiba Satellite C70-A-17C - Core i5, 8 GB RAM, 750 GB HDD). I have already followed a few steps I found online to prepare for a dual install (with Ubuntu 14.04). I backed up Windows, created a bootable Ubuntu USB and DVD (just in case one didn't work), turned off fast boot and secure boot, and shrunk C:/. The new unallocated drive portion is 292.97 GB. After shrinking C:/, I restarted Windows a couple of times to make sure everything was working fine (it is). I then attempted to install with the Ubuntu live USB. However, the Ubuntu installer doesn't see that Windows 8.1 is already installed. I don't understand, and don't want to mess with Ubuntu partitioning when I don't know where the partitions will be created. My concern is that, if I go further with the installation process, Windows might be overwritten or compromised in some way. I then tried to reboot using the Ubuntu live DVD, thinking I might get a different result. However, I can't figure out how to make the laptop boot from the CD drive. I went into the BIOS and found no option there, either. Any help is very appreciated! EDIT: Looks like I can't link directly to each photo. Here is my album of screenshots: http://imgur.com/a/zChCo Here you can see that there's no option to boot from CD drive, only USB. Everything looks okay so far. I don't understand this. Ubuntu has not yet been installed. Unmounting partitions? (I chose 'no'.) Even though the laptop came pre-installed with Windows 8.1, the Ubuntu USB installer can't see it. I chose 'something else'. I need to pick and format partitions. I scrolled down and took a second shot to include all information. Completely lost and cancelled installation.

  • Is this buffer overflow working on Mac OSX? [migrated]

    Was reading through some text and playing around with attempting to write past the size of an array in C i.e buffer overflow. The text indicates that whenever you attempt to write to say array[5] when the length of the array is 5 then you get a segmentation fault but I dont seem to be getting that When using the code below. The code actually runs. #include <stdio.h> #include <string.h> int main () { int i; int array[5] = {1, 2, 3, 4, 5}; for (i = 0; i <= 255; i++) { array[i] = 10; } int len = sizeof(array) / sizeof(int); printf("%d\n", len); printf("%d\n", array[254]); } On execution of the last statement, a 10 is printed. Am wondering whether this is a vulnerability or if there is something I am missing. I am running the code from iterm2 on a macbook pro.

  • How to stop split tunnelling over cisco VPN (OS X)?

    I'm using OS X (Snow Leopard) and the built in Cisco IP Sec client to connect to my corporate VPN. Currently, everything works as designed, and desired for most people. However, I would like to be able to funnel all traffic (particularly all web browser traffic) through the VPN. (Note - I'm an end user here, not the network administrator). Is this possible? In searching around, most people are looking to do the opposite; break out the VPN and enable split tunnelling of data. I'd like to avoid the split tunnelling. Is there some setting I can make in my OS X client to make this happen? I ran across a post where routing table changes are made to force split tunnelling: how to force split tunnel routing on mac -> cisco vpn I'm thinking something similar to that might work, but I'm not a networking expert so I'm not sure where to start (or if it is even possible).     i am using lenovo b460 with 3 GB ram and 500 GB hard disk,(no graphics card). when i live boot Linux mint i was able to connect to WiFi.but when i booted up Ubuntu 11.4 i was not able to connect through WiFi.then later i installed Ubuntu 12.4 and then i got connected with WiFi, but after installing icons and themes through my unity i am not able to view the content in the terminal and the WiFi is also not connecting now even after i changed them all back. wireless connectivity

    I'm using the following command on Linux to change the default library path temporarily for the program being run: /lib64/ld-linux-x86-64.so.2 --library-path /home/me/libs./myProgram This runs myProgram and makes it check /home/me/libs first for its dynamically linked libraries. So I want to do this on Mac too.. is there an equivalent? I'd like to avoid setting environment variables if possible.

  • Move entire OS from NTFS drive to bigger ext4 drive.

    According to SMART data, the hard drive I curently use is about to fail. I bought a new, bigger drive to copy the system to a safer place. The old drive is 160GB. Ubuntu was installed with Wubi, and the partition is NTFS. There are a few other partitions around (recovery partition, swap...) that I don't care about. The new drive is 320GB. I would like the new system to run on ext4, not on NTFS. I looked at solutions that use dd, or clonezilla, but it seems that moving to a different filesystem prevents me from using them. I considered installing a brand new ubuntu on the new hard drive and then copy /home from the old drive to the new drive, but I heard that there would be file permission problems. I would also have to reinstall all my software. One last thing: the NTFS drive has dead sectors. I don't know how this can influence the copy process, but I mention it just in case. edit: I do not care about the windows partition. I just want Ubuntu to make the transition.

    I've always found that just developing in Windows, and using Safari for Windows has been sufficient. However, Safari 6 has now been released, and I've got at least one user who has contacted me, saying he's experienced problems with one of my sites on his new ipad. The trouble is that Safari for Windows only goes up to 5.1.7. Do I have to go out and buy a new mac/ipad/iphone in order to test my code, or is there another way?
