  • What OS would you use for a simple fileserver and why?

    Hey everyone, Im looking to set up a simple fileserver: 5 - 7 clients - Mixed Windows, Linux, Mac OSX - connecting over wireless and wired Serving ~200GB content - Photos, MP3's, ISO's etc What OS would you recommend for this fileserver? I understand XP limits the number of when connecting to different shares so this probably isnt the best choice. Any recommendations are appreciated. Thank you,

A month after the installation and configuration was done and everything was working as it was supposed to, Microsoft released Team Foundation Server 2012 in mid August 2012. Well the company was using Borland Starteam as their source control and once starting to use TFS 2010, their developers and project managers were loving it since TFS is not just a source control tool and way much better then StarTeam.     Hi All, I know this is weird, but is there a .plist or key that I can edit to make the Finder use a different folder besides ~/Desktop for its Desktop folder? Why? Because I really like the BumpTop Desktop for Mac, but when I am not using it, I want my actual Finder Desktop to be of different contents. BumpTop only looks at ~/Desktop that I can tell.

    I have skills in JAVA and C#: First i had a closer look to JAVA (Eclipse with Windowbuilder-Plugin) - Swing: But there is no natvie GUI-Support for GTK3 (e.g., HUD seems not to work) Then i was at JAVA - SWT: It is to heavy. I want do code a small app that improves the Ubuntu desktop. I don't want to ship a program with eclipse included. After that i found C# Mono (Monodevelop): GTK-shparp is only for GTK2 available. A GTK3-port will come soon but is it possible to convert the program from GTK2 to GTK3 without extra adaptations? The next bad thing is, that MONO is now dropped from Ubuntu LTS 12.04. So i have no chance that my app would be a default-app in an Ubuntu-Image. (This is also a factor for me to choose a programming language). I know there are other techs but i want to use as programing language JAVA or C#.

  • Skipping intermediate Ubuntu OS upgrade to latest one,How do I upgrade from 9.04 to 10.04.2?

    I'm currently runing Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty. I want to upgrade to 10.04.02, but whenever I use the Update manager to do this, it fails with the error "An upgrade from 'jaunty' to 'lucid' is not supported with this tool".   • OS X borked; need to backup outside of Time Machine

    Quick Background: iMac G5 (the white one; 4 years old?) Running Leopard 10.5.something. Time Machine started failing on me; and every time I touch the Finder, things beachball like crazy. Booting from install disk then using Disk Utility to "Repair Disk" also fails. I'm left with the conclusion that I have a corrupt file somewhere important, that's (i) keeping TM from working and (ii) messing with basic functionality. I am not (yet) savvy enough in OS X to know what logs to look in, or how to decipher them - but 'corrupt file' seems to be the likely case, based on my readings of apple.com forum threads. So I think I need to backup, outside of Time Machine, then install fresh OS X on a new drive (or maybe SpinRite the current drive?). I'm able to put a (non-Time Machine) external USB drive on, so I dragged all 3 Users' folders to that... am I done backing up? Am I going to have a massive Permissions problem, trying to put things back together after a re-install? Thanks for reading.

I installed Samba with the following configuration: [global] workgroup = COMPANY netbios name = MANTIS security = share Now on all our windows machines people can simple go to http://mantis, rather than http://172.16.0.20. However, this doesn't appear to work on the Mac machines. Any ideas how I can sort this without changing anything on the Windows server?

    I have been unsuccessful when burning downloaded ISOs to a DVD on OSX - the burned DVD essentially has no content and the DVD is not bootable. I've tried Ubuntu versions of 11.x and 12.04 with no success. Further, I took the DVD out of an Ubuntu Unleashed book (v11.x), and am unable on several OSX laptops to read the DVD. The applications to manage ISO disks on OSX are really straightforward, and they properly function with ISOs of other linux distributions. Is there a problem with Ubuntu's? Or is it just me?

Second Situation The same as before but with one big difference, everything (environment) is installed in the customer, then I need to cryptography all my codes (It includes PHP and Shell Scripts). I think this situation is most difficulty, but I would like to hear it from different points of view.

When Ubuntu it's the only system installed on a machine, Grub doesn't appear when the computer it's turned on, my question is: When Ubuntu is the only system, Grub it's not installed on MBR? I has this doubt when I tried the ASPM command in Grub, to see if it could save some battery on my notebook, and the difference was only 0.4W. I don't even know if it made some effect or it's just a normal oscilation. Thanks.

  • Tell me why I should bother using Linux if it's all about problems getting the OS to install or work properly? [closed]

    Why should I spend day's trying to get Ubuntu to either install and/or work properly? I'm using an Acer Timeline X laptop and if I install 10.04 the wireless doesn't work, and if I try installing 11.04 it either won't install, or if it installs it's full of bugs causing my computer to freeze all the time. So please, I'm all open ears. Someone give me one or two good reasons to continue wasting time (in hope it eventually works) before I decide to focus my time on other things like productivity (using Windows like I've been doing successfully the last 10 years). This is the second time I give Ubuntu a try, the first time was in 2010 using Ubuntu Studio and Ubuntu Desktop, and it ended with me shifting back to Windows since I had spent more time getting everything to work than actually working while trying Ubuntu. I really don't understand why it needs to be like this. Why go on trying when all I see is forums full of discussions about problems which people are having difficulties fixing. Or maybe there is just one special type of computer which works well with Linux? Would very much like to know which computer that is. SO please, if it's not to much trouble I really want to here from someone who has something good to say about going through all this trouble just to get a working environment up and running since I already have a working environment up and running called Windows.   • OS X superuser folders automatically created. Perusers launchd process appears to kill 501

    New Apple laptop OSX 10.8.2. I have used OS X but many years previously, and am not familiar with subtleties or changes in com.apple.launchd.peruser.x... I have previously (and in retrospect, foolishly) made changes to these rapidly spawned new peruser accounts (my initial reaction was that if ipfw was disabled, then I might well be under hacker attack, which I have dealt with, years ago), but I believe I was wrong, and the results of my efforts at preserving the system's integrity have in fact been destructive, overreactive, and have resulted in much work to restore. My understanding from other posts is that superuser protocols have changed quite dramatically since I bought the first developer version of OS X many years ago. Haven't developed on Apple much since then, w/ exception of WebObjects (IMO, much underrated at that time, and was more user friendly than ASP (prior to .NET, I vaguely recall). Creation of apparently nasty peruser folders appear to confound 501 process, which logs inability to find firewall (ipfw). Can someone help me with this? I am concerned that either the system is improperly configured, an application was improperly installed (although there is little here beyond Apple's SDK, which I find quite accommodating and intuitive). Still, I am a novice, only sporadically develop at this time, and would really just like to see this system running happily. Please offer assistance, in the form of potential info sources, or if you have had a similar experience, then perhaps scripts to suss out this issue. I do not wish to damage the system, but Apple's Developer connection and discussion threads do not appear to have dealt with this particular issue recently... Although I may well have missed something you have not - please apprise. Any assistance on this issue is very much appreciated - by an old guy, who wants to do some things which were fun about 20 years ago.

  • How do I convert a Mac OS Filemaker 2 database to a recent FM or Bento db, preserving the relations

    I'm hoping for more than just exporting the data, I would like to preserve the relation between the databases. This is for a friend's legacy database that tracks monthly fees from a list of clients. I have the original FM database file on hand, but not the machine it ran on with the old version of Filemaker 2. Recent versions won't import it, saying it's too old. If there is a Mac-only solution that would make things simpler for me.

  • Memory limiting solutions for greedy applications that can crash OS?

    I use my computer for scientific programming. It has a healthy 8GB of RAM and 12GB of swap space. Often, as my problems have gotten larger, I exceed all of the available RAM. Rather than crashing (which would be preferred), it seems Ubuntu starts loading everything into swap, including Unity and any open terminals. If I don't catch a run-away program in time, there is nothing I can do but wait - it takes 4-5 minutes to switch to a command prompt eg. Ctrl-Alt-F2 where I can kill the offending process. Since my own stupidity is out of scope of this forum, how can I prevent Ubuntu from crashing via thrashing when I use up all of the available memory from a single offending program? At-home experiment*! Open a terminal, launch python and if you have numpy installed try this: >>> import numpy >>> [numpy.zeros((10**4, 10**4)) for _ in xrange(50)] * Warning: may have adverse effects, monitor the process via iotop or top to kill it in time. If not, I'll see you after your reboot.
