• phpredis + pconnect

  I am using phpredis on my php based website. The webserver I am using is a the simplest apache apt-get installation, no configuration involved, as this is only a development environment. The issue I am facing is that basically, while using phpredis, there is no difference between "connect" and "pconnect" commands: they both create a new connection everytime, as I can see from the "info" command on redis-cli. Now, I am pretty sure it is because of the apache configuration and the fact that it probably (most likely) is a multi-threaded env, therefore can't enstablish a single connection. My question is basically for when I will turn into production: what would the best choice of a webserver be to avoid this problem? I remember using lighttpd with thousands of users and still get only a very few (like 2 or 3) connections on mongoDB. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

• Linux USB/Serial port won't create a tty device in /dev

  I am connecting a USB to serial driver port to my system and I get about halfway to where I need to go. When it is plugged in dmesg indicates: <6>usb 2-1: new full speed USB device using sl811-hcd and address 4 <6>usb 2-1: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice and lsusb Bus 2 Device 4: ID 067b:2303 Prolific Technology, Inc. PL2303 Serial Port Bus 2 Device 1: ID 0000:0000 Bus 1 Device 1: ID 0000:0000 I get a series of usbdev2.4 (usbdev2.4, usbdev2.4_ep00, etc) devices in dev but no ttyUSB0 or anything that I can open with minicom.   Foreword: I am not asking for the differences between Nginx and Apache, nor do I want to start a "which one is better discussion. I would like to ask for help with choosing the most adequate solution for this particular situation. I need to setup one or more l SVN repositories accessible via HTTP, plus some PHP, Django and Ruby websites. However, and since I only have 512Mb of RAM at my disposal, I fear that Apache will be a too heavy choice... On the other hand, I have heard that Nginx does not fully support SVN (WebDAV) and Django without reverse proxying to Apache. Is this still true? Should I go for Apache/Nginx alone? Or should I set up both and have Nginx handling static content and proxying to Apacge for dynamic content?

• How do you set up redundant servers?

  To the sysadmins out there, I'm trying to get an idea about how you go about maintaining redundant servers for small projects. The modest number of servers in my mind is two, and three main essential services come to mind: HTTP, mail and DNS. How do you automate this duplicity? Is rsync the tool of choice (again, for small projects)? In addition to common tools for these tasks, references to books and articles would be greatly appreciated. • Name typing in the "TO" line for last name recognition

  I have outlook 2010 on a Windows 7 laptop. When I go to send an email at the "TO" line and I start typing the name, if I start to enter the last name it will not recognize anyone in my contacts and will not auto-populate a list of all the names that fit the description of what I have typed so far. But if I start typing the first name first it will start this auto-choice feature based on what I have typed so far. The company I work for has 20k + employees and If I want to email someone like "Michael Hutch " if I type "Michael" it still gives me like 800 names to chose from. My old laptop that had 2003 Outlook on it, had this functionality. Is there a way to enable this in Outlook 2010?

• MAMP PHP5.3 and 5.4

  I've just downloaded the latest version of MAMP (2.1) but have run into a few issues. I'm developing using Symfony2 which requires php5.3 minimum. It also requires a php accelerator, ideally APC. So, I set MAMP (I'm not using MAMP PRO) to use php 5.4. Problem solved, I thought. Apparently not though. It turns out MAMP have decided not to support APC (or any accelerator as far as I can see) with their 5.4 version apparently due to it being buggy (really?!?!). Ok, so I'll just use 5.3 instead. Apparently not. It turns out that although MAMP has installed 5.3 on my machine I can't select it in the preference pane. I get a choice of 5.2 or 5.4! Is there a workaround for this?

• How can I set up VLANs in a way that won't put me at risk for VLAN hopping?

  We're planning to migrate our production network from a VLAN-less configuration to a tagged VLAN (802.1q) configuration. This diagram summarizes the planned configuration: One significant detail is that a large portion of these hosts will actually be VMs on a single bare-metal machine. In fact, the only physical machines will be DB01, DB02, the firewalls and the switches. All other machines will be virtualized on a single host. One concern that has been is that this approach is complicated (overcomplicated implied), and that the VLANs are only providing an illusion of security, because "VLAN hopping is easy". Is this a valid concern, given that multiple VLANs will be used for a single physical switch port due to virtualization? How would I setup my VLANs appropriately to prevent this risk? Also, I've heard that VMWare ESX has something called "virtual switches". Is this unique to the VMWare hypervisor? If not, is it available with KVM (my planned hypervisor of choice)?. How does that come into play?

• Which file format to use for simple video editoring

  I've just bought a Sanyo VPC-CG10 camcorder which saves clips as MPEG-4 (specifically, High-Definition 720p MPEG-4 AVC/H.246) I want a simple, cheap way to edit the clips and as, I'm using Windows Vista, I though Windows Movie Maker would be a good choice. But you can't import mp4 files into Windows Movie Maker. I've tried various codecs, but I'm not sure what is the best format to convert to, so that I can edit the files in Windows Movie Maker. AVI, MPG, WMI... I'm not sure what format is best. Should I try to keep the movie clips in MPEG-4 and edit them in that format (and then which editor do I use?) or is there a better format that I should convert to before editing (and what format is that?) ?

  Hi, jungledisk is owned by rackspace and offers an option to choose Amazon S3 which charges for traffic whereby if data is stored on rackspace, no charges for traffic. For a small company, to just backup files with jungle disk from ubuntu linux OS computers, i wonder what to choose. Commercial psychologically the price on traffic and the Amazon brand make it appear or maybe it is, of better quality than the cheaper Rackspace offer which is when it comes for just backing up ok ? but if its about backing up around 30 GB which updates from time to time, what would you consider a good choice ?

• Capture documents in bitonal, or grayscale then downsample

  I'm about to embark on a document archival process. I'm going to spend a lot of good money to archive some paper (actually microfiche) to TIFF images. I have a choice of 300-dpi bitonal (2-bit, black/white) or 300-dpi grayscale (8-bit). Cost is the same for either format. Data volume (and thus image size) is not a factor. It seems to me that the grayscale, since scanned at the same resolution as the bitonal, would always contain more information and could always be downsampled to the equivalent bitonal image. Are there any downsides to selecting grayscale, and then later downsampling to bitonal if desired? In other words, is it possible that the scanning software will perform a more accurate (or more legible) representation than a grayscale image converted to bitonal?

• How do I revert back to official Linksys firmware from dd-wrt on WRT56G2 v1?

  I've been having trouble with dd-wrt on my Linksys WRT56G2 v1 router and want to go back to the stock Linksys firmware for it. The router has only 2MB of flash memory, and so I'm running the 'micro' version of dd-wrt. My question is what is the best way to do that? I could use the http://router/Upgrade.asp dd-wrt "firmware upgrade" web interface to do it, in which case there's a dropdown menu choice for "After flashing, reset to": "don't reset" or "reset to default settings". Which should I pick? Some people say that I should use a program called tftp.exe instead. I can probably gain access to a Windows machine if this is necessary. Which of these is the way to proceed? I don't want to brick the router if at all possible! Note: I used the 'wrt54g' tag because I wasn't allowed to create a 'wrt54g2' tag due my low rep here.

  Hello, do you know any browser-side component, in HTML/Javascript, Flash, Applet or Silverlight, that would allow source code edition with syntax highlighting and auto-completion. CodeMirror has a good syntax highlighting support but does not seem to support auto-completion.
