• Protecting a SVN server

  For various reasons we are finding it increasingly difficult to work with remote workers. We are a very small developer shop and it's becoming impractical to do manual merges on a daily basis. So we're left with little choice (?) but to consider opening up our SVN servers. I'm looking into the following: Full HTTPS session Running non-80 port Strong password policy Is this enough to prevent someone hacking and stealing data? I will also look into VPN but first would like to understand any alternative solutions.

• How to benchmark kernel (-Os vs -O2)

  It seems logical to me that on a 64-bit kernel compiling it to optimize for size might help overall. (My distro of choice uses -O2) It has the benefits of more registers and memory and perhaps less cache contention than normal optimized code. I have a kernel compiled like this and it seems excellent. However my question is how can I prove this? I like using Phoronix for "real world" sort of benchmarks so I would prefer to test cases like that. What should I pick to test? Does anyone else have any alternatives? • Installing raid controller forces reinstall of Windows Server 2008

  So, I've tried two different RAID controllers that have external SATA connections on my Server 2008 machine. I can install the hardware, boot into Windows, install the drivers and reboot again. No problems. However, as soon as I try to use eSATA-connected drives and reboot something happens to the Windows install and I can no longer boot into Windows. I tried repairing from the command line, and the end result is that repair console tells me I have 0 Windows installations (?). I end up having no choice but to reinstall Windows to get back on track. I must be doing something fundamentally wrong here, but I don't know what :(

  With jquery it's very easy to insert some element inside another element using the selector technology, I am wondering if there is any python library that can do things similar with jquery, the reason is I want server side python program to produce the static pages, which needs to parse the html and insert something into it. Or other alternative, not in python language at all? • reinstall PHP as apache module

  Hi sorry for the newbie question, I am not a sys admin by any means. I recently set up a VPS with webmin/virtualmin. Our CMS of choice says that PHP needs to be run as an Apache module in order to run. It says: Recompile PHP with the flag --with-apxs I've googled but can't find how to do this particularly. I think I installed PHP using "yum install php" or thru webmin, but can't remember exactly. Appreciate if anyone can point me in the right direction.

• Ubuntu Server upgrade over SSH hang

  I was upgrading an Ubuntu server (using the do-release-upgrade) command over SSH (I know it's a bad idea, but it was the only choice; I don't have physical access to the server). It seemed to go fine and was going thru the 'setting up package name' part when it froze on the line Installing new version of config file /etc/mysql/debian-start ... The SSH connection appears to be still active, as pressing the up arrow echoes back ^[[A, and so on. When I log in on another SSH connection I can log in fine, but the ** system needs restart ** message shows up. Is it safe to ^C the release-upgrade command, or try to reboot the server? Should I ^C the upgrade and try it again? Anything else I could try?

  Now that Samba 4 has finally been released we find ourselves in new position of having a choice of of either upgrading our Samba 3 domain to either a Samba 4 domain on Linux or a Windows AD domain on Windows 2012. Given that we are equally expert at managing Windows and Linux servers, is there any reason not to use Samba 4 over AD on Windows; specifically: Are there functional differences from a Windows/OS X client perspective? Are there issues with other services that use AD, such as storage appliances that use AD/Kerberos for authentication/authorisation. Will the Microsoft "System Centre" suite of tools and other similar products work seamlessly? How will Samba 4 handle AD's Multimaster DC model and FMSO roles. Are there any other issues to be aware of, such as vendor support?

• What statistics app should I use for my website?

  I have my own server (with root access). I need statistics of users who visit my website etc etc... I have looked at an app called Webalyzer... Is this a good choice? I run apache2 on a Ubuntu 9 system... If you know of any good statistics apps for servers please let me know. And a follow-up question: All statistics are saved in log-files right? So how large would these log-files become then? Possibility to split them would be good, dont know if this is possible with Webalyzer though...

• Biztalk - how do I set up MSMQ load balancing and high availability ?

  Hi, From what I understand, in order to achieve MSMQ load-balancing, one must use a technology such as NLB. And in order to achieve MSMQ high-availability, one must cluster the related Biztalk Host (and hence the underlying servers have to be in a cluster themselves). Yet, according to Microsoft Documentation, NLB and FailOver Clustering technologies are not compatible. • Office 2010 & Windows 7 - 'File' is currently in use. Try again later

  The issue: when saving a document from either Word, Excel or PowerPoint 2010, every so often it will show the message 'file' is currently in use. Try again later. We started our rollout of Windows 7 beginning of this year, and this issue was infrequent, but is now affecting enough people to be a problem. Usually, if you clear the alert, then save again, it works fine, though only in Word or Excel. Annoyingly, PowerPoint has a bad habit of changing the file to read-only after the error. So the only choice is to save to a new file name. The issue seems to only happen to files in the user's My Documents, which is a redirection folder from their HomeShare. The HomeShares are spread across 3 different file servers, 2 Windows 2003 and 1 Windows 2008 R2. Has anyone seen this issue and know how to fix it?

• Putty freezes at random when logging into a remote machine in another continent

  I have to ssh to a remote machine in Europe from Asia every day for my work. But Putty freezes sometimes at totally random times and I have no choice but to close and re-open a new ssh session. It's frustrating especially when I'm editing something or executing a long running program. I know the question really doesn't have much details ('cause nothing seems to be wrong with the network at all). Has anyone experienced this sort of issue with Putty and had resolved it? • How to stop Excel Treating US dates as UK dates?

  I'm in the UK, I've got a problem where I've got a list of dates supplied in US format. Excel seems to treat the ones that are valid in both formats as UK dates, (e.g. 03/01/2012 becomes 3rd of January rather that 1st March), and treat the ones that aren't valid UK dates (e.g. 03/13/2012) as basic text. I assume this choice is something to do with my regional settings. What I want is the system to recognise that this column of text is supplied in US date format, and convert it into the underlying date representation for calculations. How do I do this?
