• Orlando .NET Code Camp 2012 - total success..

  Their site is www.orlandocodecamp.comThis year's camp was held at Seminole State College.It was well worth it.. Took a chance at going.. by getting up at 5am and driving from Jax to Sanford for 2+hr..Run into some old friends and bunch of new ones. Coders are not really good at networking.. but they sure did show up.. attendance was solid 500+ geeks and some sessions were standing room only. MVP John Papa had the room packed out on his every session. Really enjoyed great and inspiring WP7 presentations by MVP Atley Hunter from Canada.. And of course the MVP legend Joe Healy was everywhere encouraging and promoting cool stuff, hopefully we'll get him back to present at JaxDUG and/or bring back Microsoft workshops to Jax area.

• Where is Tor Browser opening Transmission from? How can I open the "same" Transmission?

  When I launch Tor-Browser, it first launches Vidalia, then a special version of Firefox bundled with the Tor Browser package. If I try to download a (legal!) torrent in the Tor Browser version of Firefox, it launches Transmission to do so. IF I launch Transmission from within the Tor Browser, it will remember my current torrents. This persists from one Tor Browser session to the next, including logouts, shutdowns, etc. If, however, I try to launch Transmission from its location (usr/bin/transmission-gtk), it starts Transmission "fresh" without remembering any torrents or other settings. I assume Transmission is somehow loading another version of itself for Firefox -- the one that remembers things -- that isn't somewhere I can find it. Only one transmission-gtk executable appears when I search my file system... the one in usr/bin. What's going on? How can I open Transmission and have it "remember" things without having to start a torrent on Tor-Browser first?

• Error pages in ASP.NET

  In ASP.NET you can retrieve the last unhandled exception via:(HttpContext.Current.)Server.GetLastError() // Server object is available as a property in Page and UserControl context This obviously only works in the same roundtrip. If you want to retrieve this information in your error page, you got a problem because the error page is not returned in the same roundtrip. The server responds with a redirect response and a new request to the error page is automatically sent. A common workaround would be to store the exception in your Session state from the Application_Error event in Global.asax. From ASP.NET 3.5 you can configure the redirect mode for error pages: <customErrors mode="On" defaultRedirect="~/Error.aspx" redirectMode="ResponseRewrite" /> This way the redirect response is not sent and the error page is returned right away. That implies that the browser is not aware of a page change and cannot reflect it in the address bar, so your original URL is not replaced with the URL of the error page, which might be what you actually want…

  If you ask me what was my Mix10 coup de coeur, I’d have to say Bill Buxton.  I was privileged to spend an hour an a half in a small room with about twelve people and Bill Buxton.  This man has such a incredible background and he is so inspiring.  You could really tell that he is a researcher because as he was talking about something, you could see him thinking about something else and trying at the same time to cross reference that.   I attended an excellent session by Oracle SOA Suite customer Rajesh Gathwala from Agilent.  He said most mobile vendors have their own embedded toolsets but the problem arises when you have too many of these disparate toolsets in the organization..."How many toolsets do you want?".  He highlighted his solution which standardizes on Oracle SOA Suite for integration including mobile.  Here is a screenshot describing how the integration includes Oracle eBusiness Suite, Oracle Service Bus and the security solution from his presentation: You can see a video of Rajesh speaking about Agilent's Oracle SOA Suite implementation from last years OpenWorld (prior to his mobile integration).

• Enabling SSL in MySQL

  I'm running Ubuntu Server 12.04, and I want to enable SSL connections to MySQL. I've generated the following keys/certs files with OpenSSL: ca-cert.pem server-cert.pem server-key.pem I stored these at /etc/mysql, then added added the following lines to /etc/mysql/my.cnf: ssl-ca=/etc/mysql/ca-cert.pem ssl-cert=/etc/mysql/server-cert.pem ssl-key=/etc/mysql/server-key.pem Next, I restarted the server with sudo service restart mysql. However, this doesn't seem to enable SSL. Within a mysql session: mysql> show variables like '%ssl%'; +---------------+----------------------------+ | Variable_name | Value | +---------------+----------------------------+ | have_openssl | DISABLED | | have_ssl | DISABLED | | ssl_ca | /etc/mysql/ca-cert.pem | | ssl_capath | | | ssl_cert | /etc/mysql/server-cert.pem | | ssl_cipher | | | ssl_key | /etc/mysql/server-key.pem | +---------------+----------------------------+ Any ideas what I'm missing? • In the Groove: PASS Board Year 1, Q3

  It's nine months into my first year on the PASS Board and I feel like I've found my rhythm. I've accomplished one of the goals I set out for the year and have made progress on others. Here's a recap of the last few months. Anti-Harassment Policy & Process Completed In April I began work on a Code of Conduct for the PASS Summit. The Board had several good discussions and various PASS members provided feedback. You can read more about that in this blog post. Since the document was focused on issues of harassment we renamed it the "Anti-Harassment Policy " and it was approved by the Board in August. The next step was to refine the guideliness and process for enforcement of the AHP. A subcommittee worked on this and presented an update to the Board at the September meeting. You can read more about that in this post, and you can find the process document here. Global Growth Expanding PASS' reach and making the organization relevant to SQL Server communities around the world has been a focus of the Board's work in 2012. We took the Global Growth initiative out to the community for feedback, and everyone on the Board participated, via Twitter chats, Town Hall meetings, feedback forums and in-person discussions. This community participation helped shape and refine our plans. Implementing the vision for Global Growth goes across all portfolios. The Virtual Chapters are well-positioned to help the organization move forward in this area. One outcome of the Global Growth discussions with the community is the expansion of two of the VCs from country-specific to language-specific. Thanks to the leadership in Brazil & Mexico for taking the lead here. I look forward to continued success for the Portuguese- and Spanish-language Virtual Chapters. Together with the Global Chinese VC PASS is off to a good start in making the VC's truly global. Virtual Chapters The VCs continue to grow and expand. Volunteers recently rebooted the Azure and Virutalization VCs, and a new  Education VC will be launching soon. Every week VCs offer excellent free training on a variety of topics. It's the dedication of the VC leaders and volunteers that make all this possible and I thank them for it. Board meeting The Board had an in-person meeting in September in San Diego, CA.. As usual we covered a number of topics including governance changes to support Global Growth, the upcoming Summit, 2013 events and the (then) upcoming PASS election. Next Up Much of the last couple of months has been focused on preparing for the PASS Summit in Seattle Nov. 6-9. I'll be there all week;  feel free to stop me if you have a question or concern, or just to introduce yourself.  Here are some of the places you can find me: VC Leaders Meeting Tuesday 8:00 am the VC leaders will have a meeting. Women in Tech Luncheon This year marks the 10th WIT Luncheon at PASS. I'm honored to be on the panel with Stefanie Higgins, Kevin Kline, Kendra Little and Jen Stirrup. This event is on Thursday at 11:30. Community Appreciation Party Thursday evening don't miss this event thanking all of you for everthing you do for PASS and the community. • Need advice on design in Ruby On Rails

  For personal educational purposes I am making a site for a conference. One of the object that exist in a conference is a session, which has different states and in each state it has slightly different attributes: When submitted it has a speaker (User in the system), Title and abstract. When under review it has reviews and comments (in addition to the basic data) When accepted it has a defined time-slot but no reviewers anymore. I feel that it is not the best thing to add a "status" attributes and start adding many if statements... So I thought it would be better to have different classes for each state each with it's own validations and behaviors. What do you think about this design? Do you have a better idea? *I must add this out of frustration: I had several edits of the question, including one major change but no one actually gave any hint or clue on which direction should i take or where is a better place to ask this... Hardly helpful.

• My VPS cannot send email

  Webmaster Newbie Question I have a low end vps (128MB RAM)running on Debian.I used a bash script by ilevkov to setup the site. After some trial and error, I managed to set up a WordPress on it. Just now I found out that my VPS can't send any email. I tested using the WordPress reset password email, and it shows The e-mail could not be sent. Possible reason: your host may have disabled the mail() function... After some Google session I noticed that I can send email from ssh. So I tried mail [email protected] Subject: Halo dion some message . and the result said EOT /usr/lib/sendmail: No such file or directory "/root/dead.letter" 9/243 . . . message not sent. The question How can I fix my VPS mail setting?

• How do I get Unity working again after installing the wrong video driver?

  First off I did something stupid. I downloaded a Nvidia driver even though I have an integrated chipset. After installation my unity was still working. However, when I restarted my computer I got an error message saying that I can't run unity. I uninstalled the Nvidia driver. I restarted my computer. Unity still does not work. In the terminal I type "unity" and everything looks okay until I get three error messages that say this: Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0". followed by: Compiz (opengl) - Fatal: glXCreateContext failed Compiz (bailer) - Info: Ensuring a shell for your session jesse@jesse-PC:~$ Cannot register the panel shell: there is already one running.

• Blank space on right side of screen with XMonad/Gnome

  Fresh install of 11.10 x64. I set up XMonad with gnome-session as I did before on 11.04, following the guide on the Arch wiki. Everything works, but there's this weird vertical space about the size of a scrollbar on the side of the screen. The space is also above xmobar (the battery system tray icon is hidden behind it and I can't click it). XMonad weird space (since I can't post images) Is there some weird XMonad or Gnome option I'm missing? I don't even know where to begin to look.

• Authentication issue with CUPS 5.3.1 on SMB Printer

  I am trying to print to a samba printer via CUPS. I have configured the printer allright, but there seems to be a problem with authentication. The error message I get is Session setup failed: NT_STATUS_LOGON_FAILURE The GUI also tells me: Idle - Tree connect failed (NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED) It used to work with previous versions of CUPS (1.4.3 and 1.4.6) under Ubuntu 11.04 I am doing this on a clean install of Ubuntu 12.04, CUPS version 1.5.3. I have tried changing some rights relating to apparmor, with no success as described here: http://www.compdigitec.com/labs/2010/01/16/fixing-usrlibcupsbackendsmb-failed-error-in-ubuntu/ I have been working with Ubuntu for years - but this is the kind of problem I need help with.

• Lubuntu Desktop messed up for logged in user, but not for guest

  I recently upgraded my laptop from Lubuntu 12.04 to 14.04.1 and the upgrade process seemed to go fine. However, when I went to login as my normal user, I encountered an issue. The background loaded up, but none of LXDE or LXPanel showed up, leaving me with an empty desktop and nothing else except two errors. I thought that this was weird, so I just figured something had been messed up and would be fixed by a reboot. But it wasn't. I then tried logging in as guest, and it's just fine. I checked the ~/.xsession-errors file (for my main user, not guest, did it via TTY1) and this is what I got: Script for ibus started at run_im. Script for auto started at run_im. Script for default started at run_im. init: Unable to register as subreaper: Invalid argument init: lxsession main process (1649) killed by TERM signal init: Disconnected from notified D-Bus bus init: job dbus failed to stop init: job upstart-dbus-session-bridge failed to stop init: job upstart-dbus-system-bridge failed to stop init: job upstart-file-bridge failed to stop I also read the sometimes removing the ~/.Xauthority file can help, if the ownership is messed up. ls -l /home/MYUSER/.Xauthority tells me -rw------- 1 MYUSER MYUSER 60 Aug 16 09:57 /home/MYUSER/.Xauthority. Should that be root or something else, or should I try deleting that and ~/.profile. Here's what ~/.profile looks like: # ~/.profile: executed by the command interpreter for login shells. # This file is not read by bash(1), if ~/.bash_profile or ~/.bash_login # exists. # see /usr/share/doc/bash/examples/startup-files for examples. # the files are located in the bash-doc package. # the default umask is set in /etc/profile; for setting the umask # for ssh logins, install and configure the libpam-umask package. #umask 022 # if running bash if [ -n "$BASH_VERSION" ]; then # include .bashrc if it exists if [ -f "$HOME/.bashrc" ]; then . • Performance tracking/monitoring in games

  Let's say I have an online game with a downloadable client / browser plugin. I want to track performance of my software and automatically send summary to the server. Let it be fps, latency, load time, physics step calc. time, whatever... I also want tools to perform data analysis: per session stats, per hardware stats, avgs, totals, diagrams, etc. So that I could see what are the real world hotspots / bottlenecks. Is there any common out-of-the-box / SaS solution?

• Did I lost my RAID again?

  Hi! A little history: 2 years ago I was really excited to find out that mdadm is so powerful so it even can reshape arrays so you can start with a smaller array and the grow it as you need. I've bought 3x1Tb drives and made RAID-5. It was fine for a year. Then I bought 2x more, and tried to reshape to RAID-6 out of 5 drives, and due to some mess with superblock versions, lost all content. Had to rebuild it from scratch, but 2Tb of data were gone. Yesterday I bought 2 more drives, and this time I had everything: properly built array, UPS. I've disabled write intent map, added 2 new drives as a spare and run a command to grow array to 7-disk. It started working, but speed was ridiculously slow, ~100kb/sec. AFter processing first 37Mb at such an amasing speed, one of old HDDs fails. I properly shutdown PC and disconnected failed drive. After bootup it appeared it recreated intent map as it was still in mdadm config, so I removed it from config and rebooted again. Now all I see is that all mdadm processes deadlocks, and don't do anything. Did I lost my data again? Any suggestions how can I make it work? OS is Ubuntu Server 10.04.2... PS. Needless to say that data is unaccessible - I cannot mount /dev/md0 as save the most valuable data. You can see my disappointment - the very specific thing I was excited about failed twice taking 5Tb of my data with it.
