• Is there such a thing as too much experience?

  For modern software developers in today's world, is there such a thing as having too much experience with a certain technology or programming language? To a recruiter, interviewer, or company hiring-- could there often be cases where a particular candidate has so much experience in a certain area or technology where it works against the candidate to being hired? I'm not talking about cases where a senior developer is applying for an entry-level developer position, and has a lot of experience in that sense. Nor am I talking about cases where a candidate is outright lying (e.g. 20+ years experience with Ruby on Rails). I've overheard this in conversations between hiring managers/developers during happy hours, yet I'm not quite sure I fully understand what they mean.

• What are the warning signs of impending doom to watch out for on a project?

  Having worked on a failed project is one of the few things that most programmers have in common, regardless of language used, industry or experience. These projects can be great learning experiences, soul-crushing disasters (or both!), and can occur for a multitude of reasons: upper management change of heart under-skilled / under-resourced team emergence of superior competitor during dev cycle over/under management Once you've worked on a couple of such projects, is it possible to recognise at an early stage exactly when a project is doomed to fail? For me, a big sign is having a hard & fast external deadline combined with feature creep. I've seen projects which were well planned out and proceeding right on schedule go horribly off the rails once the late feature requests started to roll in and get added to the final "deliverable". The proposers of these requests earned the nickname of Columbo, due to rarely leaving the room without asking for "just one more thing". What are the warning signs you look out for that set off the alarm bells of impending doom in your head?

• Markdown, LaTeX combined in WYSIWYG editor. Is there any?

  I really like the way markdown is implemented in SE bunch of sites, where I can easily write code blocks, performing formatting or even use latex on some of sites like writing $\pi$. I also like how this online editor looks and feels. But it's all online. Is there any offline WYSIWYG analogs of notepag or WMD in Ubuntu that optionally supports pdf as an output format? Both markdown and latex desired. I desire to simultaneously use Markdown and LaTeX. I'm planing to use an editor for writing some technical stuff with math, but it's annoying to be constantly in "LaTeX-mode". So it would be awesome to immerse in LaTeX when I need formulas and use markdown when I need to speak on natural language. UPD. Almost all answers was quite useful, but none of them answers directly on my question. I'll accept @N.N. answer as a most complete.

• How do you go about training a replacement?

  I recently asked about leaving a position and got a lot of great answers. One of the common threads was that being around to train the new person would be expected and could go a long way. Now considering that (I think) most people don't stay at a company for a long time after they've given notice, and it will take time for the company to interview/hire one - that leaves for a short amount of time to get someone up to speed. I've also never trained anyone before. I did a bunch of tutoring in University and College, but teaching a language/technology is far different from training someone to replace you on your job. So the question is: how do you go about training someone to replace you in a, potentially, short amount of time?

• Should a programmer take writing lessons to enhance code expressiveness?

  Given that programmers are authors and write code to express abstract thoughts and concepts, and good code should be read by other programmers without difficulties and misunderstandings, should a programmer take writing lessons to write better code? Abstracting concepts and real world problems/entities is an important part of writing good code, and a good mastery of the language used for coding should allow the programmer to express his thoughts more easily, or in a better way. Besides, when trying to write or rewrite some code to make it better, much time can be spent in deciding the names for functions, variables or data structures. I think this could also help to avoid writing code with more than one meaning, often cause of misunderstanding between different programmers. Code should always express clearly its function unambiguously.

• Small-Scale Physics Engine

  I'm entering Android game development, and I already have a computer version of a game I want to publish. The thing is, I want to make this as good as it can be. With that said, I need a physics engine, really to only do one thing. That one thing is to make a parabolic movement of my main character as he's jumping in the air. Currently, my computer version simply makes the guy move up at a 45 degree angle, and as soon as it hits the ceiling, down at a 45 degree angle. I need a physics engine/library that would accomplish that, it has to be in java since that's my best language, it has to be 2D, and it has to be able to work on Android. Which physics engine/library could accomplish all of that?

• Scripting for a C#, multiplayer game

  I have a multiplayer game written in C# and we've recently been creating a lot of content but have been looking for a way to give our entities customization logic that the designers can hook into. I took a look at this post. With something like this in mind (using C# as a scripting language); I have a few questions. 1) Would one embed the script itself in the entity object before persisting to it to the disk? Is this okay? 2) Would I compile once per scripting then - this seems like a lot of overhead to store all these compiled Assemblies to execute. Any general advice on how to do thigns is welcome, too. These entities are generated on the fly inside the editor and could be composed of a lot of different things.

• junior / professional / senior categorization

  Hey guys, is it just me or is the categorization of developer levels highly subjective? I get the feeling that every company tries to hire experienced developers as juniors because they don't know $technology. For example my own career: I switched technologies a couple of times, while sticking to java as a programming language. For example I first worked for 3 years using JavaSE technologies, the next company I worked for hired me as junior because I didn't have JavaEE experience - while still selling me as professional level to customers (I work in consulting). The next company hired me again as junior because I didn't have SAP experience - they mostly work with SAP Java technologies which is definitely a niche. Still, they are selling all their technology consultants for exactly the same rate while paying them significantly different wages. Now when switching jobs again I feel like this whole thing is going to start all over again because I don't have Spring experience or Oracle knowledge. tl;dr = is my observation totally off base that companies are just using these categorizations as means to keep down wages?

• What languages are most commonly used in medical research?

  For someone about to go into a career in medical research, what language would be the most useful to learn? From my limited experience (I have been a researcher in mathematics and in finance) I have been able to recommend looking at R (for statistics) Matlab (for general numeric processing) and Python (for general purpose programming with statistics/numerics as an add-on) but I don't know which of those (if any) are in common use -- or if there are other, more specialized languages that are used. To be clear, I'm not talking about a professional programmer working in a medical setting. I am talking about a medical or genetics researcher who uses programming to analyse data, or generally to help get their work done.

• I can't program because old coding style. This is normal to programmers?

  I'm in my first real job as programmer, but I can't solve any problems because of the coding style used. The code here: don't have comments don't have functions (50, 100, 200, 300 or more lines executed in sequence) uses a lot of if statements with a lot of paths has variables that make no sense (eg.: cf_cfop, CF_Natop, lnom, r_procod) uses a language I am unfamiliar with (Visual FoxPro 8 from 2002) I feel like I have gone back to 1970. Is it normal for a programmer familiar with OOP, clean-code, design patterns, etc. to have trouble with coding in this old-fashion way?

  Out of curiosity, are there languages that allow you to do set arithmetic on types to create new types? Something like: interface A { void a(); void b(); } interface B { void b(); void c(); } interface C = A & B; // has b() interface D = A | B; // has a(), b() and c() interface E = (A & B) ^ B; // has c() I know that in some languages these ideas can be expressed (i.e., Java has List<Comparable & Serializable> for the union of the interfaces) but I've never heard of a language that supports type arithmetic. • Google Analytics - Unable to get GA Tracking

  We've been using GA for a few years with no probs. About 2-3 weeks ago we tried to clean up some of our tracking and on one of our profiles, it's not working anymore (since oct 10.) First, some context then some GA Debugging code. 1. Context. We have the following setup: different root domains AND different sub-domains on one of the root domains. www.website.com www.website.com.au www.anotherWebsite.com foo.website.com baa.website.com So what we're doing is the following: each root domain and each sub-domain get their own tracking code. This way we can allow separate people (from outside our company) to access only their own data. Eg. a manager for foo.website.com can only see data related to that domain .. and see data on the other domains. Have a last account which is the SUM of all the domains. this is for us. so we can see total numbers. So to do this, we have two trackers that fire off, on the page. the individual accounts all work fine - they seem to be tracking data ok. the 'global' account is not working and this gives us the = Tracking Not Installed error. This has been going on since oct 10. So the wait 24/48/72 hours thing is waaaaay over. 2. GA Debug code. Installing GA Debug chrome extension gives the following output. I've tried to hide anything that could be considered secret. UA-XXXXX34-1 == Global account (which isn't working any more). • One method with many behaviours or many methods

  This question is quite general and not related to a specific language, but more to coding best practices. Recently, I've been developing a feature for my app that is requested in many cases with slightly different behaviours. This function send emails , but to different receivers, or with different texts according to the parameters. The method signature is something like public static sendMail (t_message message = null , t_user receiver = null , stream attachedPiece = null) And then there are many condition inside the method, like if(attachedPiece != null) { } I've made the choice to do it this way (with a single method) because it prevents me to rewrite the (nearly) same method 10 times, but I'm not sure that it's a good practice. What should I have done? Write 10 sendMail method with different parameters? Are there obvious pros and cons for these different ways of programming? Thanks a lot.

• Why use link classes in oql instead of classes that contain links

  itop abstracts its very complex database design with an object query language (oql). For this there are classes definded, like 'Ticket' and 'Server'. Now a Ticket usually is linked to a Server. In my naive way I would give the Ticket class an attribute 'affected_server_list', where I could reference the affected servers. itop does it different: neither Servers nor Tickets know of each other. Instead there is a class 'linkTicketToServer', which provides the link between the two. The first thing I noticed is that it makes oql queries more complex. So I wondered why they designed it this way. One thing that occured to me is that it allows for more flexiblity, in that I can add links without modifying the original classes. Is this allready why one would implement it this way, or are there other reasons for this kind of design?

I really enjoyed presenting last year and just had to submit a proposal for this year.  This time around my topic is Increasing Collaboration with Windows Phone 7, SharePoint 2010 and Office Open XML.  I had a much longer title but the site forced me to shorten it up.  I guess that is a good way to tell people not to get too wordy. Up till now, the user stories have proven themselves a very valuable weapon to understand requirements and to specify the solution in a comprehensive, easy to understand language. My question is this: now that my user stories are complete, how do I design my solution? I understand that I derive behavior tests from my user stories, and I have to do UI design, but am I supposed to use good ol' UML?
