• Cannot install SQL 2008 Workstation Components on Windows XP SP2

  Hi, i am trying to install the workstation components of sql server 2008 on my windows xp sp2 machine and during the setup, the only options i have to install are the database engine and sdk. all of the other options including books, workstation components are missing. Using the same installer disks i was able to install the whole works on a server. I do not have any version of sql currently installed on the xp machine.. am i doing something wrong?

• Optimize windows 2008 performance

  Hello, I have windows server 2008 sp2 installed as virtual machine on my personal laptop. I use it only for source control (visual svn) and continuous integration (teamcity). As the virtual machine resources are limited I'd like to optimize it's performance by disabling services and features that are not necessary for my purposes. Can anyone recommend where to start or provide with tips for getting better performance. Thanks.

  Could anyone explain to me why is it that producers of processors claim that their processor can perform so many thousands (or millions) operations per second and yet typical program (Word, VS etc.) on my machine with 4GB, 3500hz starts with no less than 10sek. Have to mention that I've just formatted disk and tick any necessarry boxes to optimize my machine. So if for example outlook starts in 10 sek I wonder how many millions of operations have to be performed to run such program? Thanks

• removing the .local in local network name serving

  I have several local machines; I use a OSX 10.6 machine to do most of the serving. Annoyingly, it postfixes its network name with .local. How would I set up a system so that I could access it by its hostname? server: httpd apache2 default install I am accessing it with a web browser(surprisingly). also when I ping my osx machine as name, it doesn't work; ping name.local does work.

• Is there a good command-line OS from which I can launch VMs?

  Generally speaking, I'm interested in something that can load quickly and, depending on what I want to do, can choose to launch a Virtual Machine that is tailored to my desired activity. So, something that loads to (preferably) a command line, then if I want to run my Windows 7 machine that has all of my programming junk on it, I can simply enter the command to launch some VM player and close it when I'm done.

• No outbound connections for apache2

  I'm unable to hit my server from a browser on another machine (it gives a 'connection has timed out' error), although typing http://localhost or http://my-ip-here works from the browser within the machine. I can ping and ssh into the server from other machines; it just seems like apache is rejecting the port-80 browser connections. What can I do to further diagnose/fix this problem?   I use a custom logon shell on a machine (windows 7) for security reasons - which works fine by altering HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\shell. However, I also want that the administrator will still be able to manage the machine, so I modified the user specific key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\shell back to explorer.exe - but when I log on I get a single windows explorer window, and not the full desktop. does any one know how to configure the normal desktop shell only to a specific user?

  I'm thinking of using ZFS for my home-made NAS array. I would have 4 HDDs in raidz on a Ubuntu Server 10.04 machine. I'd like to use the snapshot capability and dedup when storing data. I'm not so much concerned about the speed, since the machine is accessed via N wireless network and that is probably going to be the bottleneck. So does anyone have any practical experience with zfs-fuse 0.6.9 on such (or simillar) configuration?

B can mount A either as CIFS or NFS (Services for Unix NFS server running on A). This is an absolutely time critical operation. What is the best way of achieving this?
