• Social Media Java Design Problem

  I need to put something together quickly that will take blog posts and place them on social media sites, the requirements are as follows: Blog Entries are independent records that already exist, they have a published date and a modified date, the blog entry application cannot be changed, at least not substantially A new blog entry, or update needs to be sent to social media sites I currently do not need to update or delete social media communications if the blog entry is edited, or deleted, though I may need to later My design problems here are as follows: how do I know the status of each update how can I figure out what blog entry updates and postings have already been sent out? how can I quickly poll the blog entry table for postings that haven't yet been sent out? Avoiding looking at each Entry record from the DB as an object and asking if it's been sent already. That would be too slow. I cannot hook into any Blog Entry update code, my only option would be to create a trigger that an update queues something to be processed I'm looking for general guiding principles here, the biggest problem I'm having is coming up with any reasonable way to figure out if a blog entry should be sent to our social media sites in the first place

• question about MySQL transaction and trigger

  I quickly browsed MySQL manual but didn't find the exact information about my question. Here is my question: if I have a InnoDB table A with two triggers triggered by 'AFTER INSERT ON A' and 'AFTER UPDATE ON A'. More specifically, For example: one trigger is defined as: CREATE TRIGGER test_trigger AFTER INSERT ON A FOR EACH ROW BEGIN INSERT INTO B SELECT * FROM A WHERE A.col1 = NEW.col1 END; You can ignore the query between BEGIN AND END, basically I mean this trigger will insert several rows into table B which is also a InnoDB table. Now, if I started a transaction and then insert many rows, say: 10K rows, into table A. If there is no trigger associated with table A, all these inserts are atomic, that's for sure. Now, if table A is associated with several insert/update triggers which insert/update many rows to table B and/or table C etc.. will all these inserts and/or updates are still all atomic? I think it's still atomic, but it's kind of difficult to test and I can't find any explanations in the Manual. Anyone can confirm this? Thanks a lot!

  Hi, I am having trouble parsing self closing XML tags using SAX. I am trying to extract the link tag from the Google Base API.I am having reasonable success in parsing regular tags. • How to efficiently store and update binary data in Mongodb?

  I am storing a large binary array within a document. I wish to continually add bytes to this array and sometimes change the value of existing bytes. I was looking for some $append_bytes and $replace_bytes type of modifiers but it appears that the best I can do is $push for arrays. It seems like this would be doable by performing seek-write type operations if I had access somehow to the underlying bson on disk, but it does not appear to me that there is anyway to do this in mongodb (and probably for good reason). If I were instead to just query this binary array, edit or add to it, and then update the document by rewriting the entire field, how costly will this be? Each binary array will be on the order of 1-2MB, and updates occur once every 5 minutes and across 1000s of documents. Worse, yet there is no easy way to spread these out (in time) and they will usually be happening close to one another on the 5 minute intervals. Does anyone have a good feel for how disastrous this will be? Seems like it would be problematic. An alternative would be to store this binary data as separate files on disk, implement a thread pool to efficiently manipulate the files on disk, and reference the filename from my mongodb document. (I'm using python and pymongo so I was looking at pytables). I'd prefer to avoid this though if possible. Is there any other alternative that I am overlooking here? Thanks in advnace.

• Database cache that I'm not aware of?

  I'm using asp.net mvc, linq2sql, iis7 and sqlserver express 2008. I get these intermittent server errors, primary key conflicts on insertion. I'm using a different setup on my development computer so I can't debug. After a while they go away. Restarting iis helps. I'm getting the feeling there is cache somewhere that I'm not aware of. Can somebody help me sort out these errors? Cannot insert duplicate key row in object 'dbo.EnquiryType' with unique index 'IX_EnquiryType'. Edits regarding Venemos answer Is it possible that another application is also accessing the same database simultaneously? Yes there is, but not this particular table and no inserts or updates. There is one other table with which I experience the same problem but it has to do with a different part of the model. How often an in what context do you create a new DataContext instance? Only once, using the singleton pattern. Are the primary keys generated by the database or by the application? Database. Which version of ASP.NET MVC and which version of .NET are you using? RC2 and 3.5.

• When to use ellipsis after menu items

  In pretty much all applications that have a menu bar, some of the items have an ellipsis (...) after them, and some don't. Is there a well known convention on when to put that ellipsis there and when not to? When do you do it? Do you do it? I have looked at various windows applications, and this is what I have come to: Ellipsis Menu items which opens a form that require user input to do something (Replace, Go to, Font) No ellipsis Menu items which just does something (Cut, Paste, Exit, Save) Menu items which opens a form that does not require user input (About, Check for Updates) But then there always seems to be menu items that doesn't follow this rule. For example the Help items (How do I, Search, Index) and the Find and Replace (Quick Find, Find in Files, Find Symbol) in Visual Studio. So after thinking about it a bit more I know think this might be the thing: Ellipsis Menu items that will definitely open a modal window. No Ellipsis Menu items that opens a non-modal window. Menu items that doesn't open any window. Menu items that most likely won't open a modal window (Like Save, which does open a modal window if you haven't saved before or something like that, but otherwise don't) What do you guys think?

• git push says everything up to date when it definitely is not

  I have a public repository. No one else has forked, pulled, or done anything else to it. I made some minor changes to one file, successfully committed them, and tried to push. It says 'Everything up-to-date'. There are no branches. I'm very, very new to git and I don't understand what on earth is going on. git remote show origin tells me: HEAD branch: master Remote branch: master tracked Local ref configured for 'git push': master pushes to master (up to date) Any ideas what I can do to make this understand that it's NOT up to date? • Why is UseCompatibleTextRendering needed here?

  Hi, I think I'm missing something fundamental. Please tell me what it is, if you can. I have developed a little C++ WinForms app using VS2008. So it is built using .NET 3.5 SP1. My development box is Win7, if that matters. The default value of UseCompatibleTextRendering property in WinForms controls is false in this version of VStudio. And this should not matter to me, I don't think. I don't have any custom-drawn text or controls. The app looks good running on my Win7 box. If I package it up (dragging along .NET 3.5) and install it on one of our WinXP desktops, the buttons and labels don't look good; the text is chopped off in them. If I set UseCompatibleTextRendering to true and then run it on the XP boxes, the text fits into the buttons and labels. My question is: Why? The installation puts .Net 3.5 on the XP boxes, so the app should be able to find and use the right version of WinForms, right? I should note that before I put my app + .NET 3.5 on these boxes, they have no .NET at all. They do not get automatic Microsoft updates; our IT guy gates the patches and upgrades. [ This sort of thing has happened before with apps I create.. they look/work great on the Engineering machines, because we maintain those and they mostly have up-to-date stuff. When they are run on the corporate boxes, they usually don't run and need the VCredist installed. ] Back to the question at hand: The text looks better with the UseCompatibleTextRendering set to false, so I'd rather keep it that way, if I can. I'd like to understand what might be missing on those XP boxes that is making the text not fit. Thanks S

• Design an Application That Stores and Processes Files

  I'm tasked with writing an application that acts as a central storage point for files (usually document formats) as provided by other applications. It also needs to take commands like "file 395 needs a copy in X format", at which point some work is offloaded to a 3rd party application. I'm having trouble coming up with a strategy for this. I'd like to keep the design as simple as possible, so I'd like to avoid big extra frameworks or techniques like threads for as long as it makes sense. The clients are expected to be web applications (for example, one is a django application that receives files from our customers; the others are not yet implemented). The platform it will be running on is likely going to be Python on Linux, unless I have a strong argument to use something else. In the beginning I thought I could fit the information I wanted to communicate in the filenames, and let my application parse the filename to figure out what it needed to do, but this is proving too inflexible with the amount of information I'm realizing I need to make available. Another idea is to pair FTP with a database used as a communication medium (client uploads a file and updates the database with a command as a row in a table) but I don't like this idea because adding commands (a known change) looks like it will require adding code as well as changing database schemas. It will also muddy up the interface my clients will have to use. I looked into Pyro to let applications communicate more directly but I don't like the idea of running an extra nameserver for this one purpose. I also don't see a good way to do file transfer within this framework. What I'm looking for is techniques and/or technologies applicable to my problem. At the simplest level, I need the ability to accept files and messages with them.

• different thread accessing MemoryStream

  There's a bit of code which writes data to a MemoryStream object directly into it's data buffer by calling GetBuffer(). It also uses and updates the Position and SetLength() properties appropriately. This code works purposes 99.9999% of the time. Literally. Only every so many 100,000's of iterations it will barf. The specific problem is that the memory.Position property suddenly returns zero instead of the appropriate value. However, code was added that checks for the 0 and throws an exception which include log of the MemoryStream properties like Position and Length in a separate method. Those return the correct value. Further addition shows that when this rare condition occurs, the memory.Position only has zero inside this particular method. Okay. Obviously, this must be a threading issue. But this code is well locked. However, the nature of this software is that it's organized by "tasks" with a scheduler and so any one of several actual O/S thread may run this code at any give time--but never more than one at a time. So it's my guess that ordinarily it so happens that the same thread keeps getting used for this method and then on a rare occasion a different thread get used. Then due to compiler optimizations, the different thread never gets the correct value. It gets a "stale" value. Ordinarily in a situation like this I would apply a "volatile" keyword to the variable in question. But that (those) variables are inside the MemoryStream object. Does anyone have any other idea? Or does this mean we have to implement our own MemoryStream object? (Just like we end up having to do with practically every collection in .NET?) It's a shame to have such an awesome platform as .NET and have virtually the entire system useless as-is for seriously parallelized applications. If I'm wrong or you have other ideas, please advise.   I am trying to figure out how to manage a Datagrid based on an XML object like this: <matrix rows="5" columns="5"> <column> <row>0.5</row> <row>0.21</row> </column> <column> <row>0.6</row> <row>0.9</row> </column> <column> <row>0.5</row> <row>0.5</row> </column> <column> <row>0.8</row> <row>0.4</row> </column> </matrix> I will need to populate the Datagrid column names based on a different XML object and use the above XML to populate each of the column's rows. I currently am able to create the Datagrid and populate its column headers but I am unsure as to how to how to add the rows for each column. The above XML will be update with new row and column elements added and deleted. This, of course, will be bound to the Datagrid to show updates. Thanks in advanced for your help.

I recently bought Javascript: The Good Parts and while I find this a big help, I'm still having trouble designing this application. Especially when it comes to writing function and methods.   Hi, I having problems with re-checking some checkboxes after and ajax call updates a table. I have a table of what the project calls 'shares'. I want to: 1) check for and save any checked shares to an array 2) Do my ajax call to update the table of shares 3) Re-check any there we checked before the ajax update. My code is not working and I can't see why? • Help! Getting an error copying the data from one column to the same column in a similar recordset..

  I have a routine which reads one recordset, and adds/updates rows in a similar recordset. The routine starts off by copying the columns to a new recordset: Here's the code for creating the new recordset.. For X = 1 To aRS.Fields.Count mRS.Fields.Append aRS.Fields(X - 1).Name, aRS.Fields(X - 1).Type, aRS.Fields(X - _ 1).DefinedSize, aRS.Fields(X - 1).Attributes Next X Pretty straight forward. Notice the copying of the name, Type, DefinedSize & Attributes... Further down in the code, (and there's nothing that modifies any of the columns between.. ) I'm copying the values of a row to a row in the new recordset as such: For C = 1 To aRS.Fields.Count mRS.Fields(C - 1) = aRS.Fields(C - 1) Next C When it gets to the last column which is a numeric, it craps with the "Mutliple-Step Operation Generated an error" message. I know that MS says this is an error generated by the provider, which in this case is ADO 2.8. There is no open connect to the DB at this point in time either. I'm pulling what little hair I have left over this one... (and I don't really care at this point that the column index is 'X' in one loop & 'C' in the other... I'll change it later when I get the real problem fixed...)

• Snapshot agent obliterates conflicts

  We are using merge replication in SQL Server 2000. We have a snapshot agent that runs every night that updates the publication snapshot. About six months ago we updated from SQL Server 7.0 to 2000 (that's not a typo). We noticed a sharp decline in conflicts at that time but could not track down the reason. We finally found that the daily snapshot agent is recreating the conflict tables every night. This seems to be a change in functionality from SQL Server 7.0. We were running the snapshot agent before and the conflicts would accumulate. Is there some way to prevent the data in the conflict tables from being lost when the snapshot runs? Can anyone confirm a change in behavior between 7.0 and 2000? Our current plan is to simply stop automatically updating the publication snapshot. Is that a reasonable workaround? Here is the line from the script that is adding the snapshot: exec sp_addpublication_snapshot @publication = N'MyPub' , @frequency_type = 4 , @frequency_interval = 1 , @frequency_relative_interval = 1 , @frequency_recurrence_factor = 0 , @frequency_subday = 1 , @frequency_subday_interval = 5 , @active_start_date = 0 , @active_end_date = 0 , @active_start_time_of_day = 500 , @active_end_time_of_day = 235959 Here is the step that runs in the agent job: Step Name: Run agent. Type: Replication Snapshot Command: -Publisher [WCDBS02] -PublisherDB [TaxDB] -Distributor [WCDBS02] -Publication [TaxDB] -ReplicationType 2 -DistributorSecurityMode 1 This appears to be running the Replication Snapshot Agent Utility. There is no mention on that link about dropping and recreating system conflict tables, nor is there any flag that can be set to alter this behavior.

• MySQL LIMIT 1 but query 15 rows?

  Basically what I'm trying to do is compare the ID's of rows against 15 results in MySQL, eliminating all but 1 (using NOT IN) and then pull that result. Now normally this would be fine by itself, however the order of the 15 rows I'm doing the SQL query for are constantly changing based on a ranking, so there is a possibility that between the time the ranking updates, and the ajax request (which I submit the ID's for NOT IN) more than just one ID has changed, which would of course bring back more than one row which I do not want. So in short, is there a way in which I can query 15 rows, but only return one? Without having to run two separate queries. Any help is appreciated, thank you. EXAMPLE: Say I have 7 items in my database, and I'm displaying 5 on the page to the user. These are what are being displayed to the user: Apple Orange Kiwi Banana Grape But in the database I also have Peach Blackberry Now what I want to do is if the user deletes an item from their list, it will add another item (based on a ranking they have) Now the issue is, in order to know what they have on their list at the moment I send the remaining items to the database (say they deleted Kiwi, I would send Apple, Orange, Banana, and Grape) So now I select the highest ranked 5 items from are remaining six items, make sure they are not the ones already displayed on the page, and then add the new one to list (either Peach or Blackberry) All good and well, except that if both peach and blackberry now outrank grape, then I will be returning two results instead of just one. Because it would've searched... Apple Orange Banana Peach Blackberry and excluded... Apple Orange Banana Grape Which leaves us with both Peach and Blackberry, instead of just Peach or Blackberry

I am also looking for answers by myself, but this problem is so akward that I am having problems to find the right keywords to look for it. The problem is: Why?!! Some explanation about the code: CustomTask is almost the same as Task, but I was having problems regarding serialization as can be seen here I don't want to send the Severity property populated because I want my message to be as small as possible. Could anyone clear to my, why it recognize the entry, but creates a new entry in the DB?

• How to save XML file before update?

  Right so I have a simple app that consists of a calendar a Set Event button and list box that populates using a DataTemplate in WPF. When I build the app the Events.xml file is like this: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?> <events> </events> I add events to xml through code. Final structure of the xml file is the following <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?> <events> <event Name="Some Name"> <startDate>20.03.2010</startDate> <endDate>29.03.2010</endDate> </event> </event> Now here's my problem. If I update the app and deploy it with Click Once and the app updates it self, I lose the list because the new file is empty. Any workaround this? • Delphi SQLite Update causing errors to appear.

  I have used Inserts, selects, updates, deleted without problem all over the program but for some reason this specific section causes it to except and not run the SQL I send it. I am trying to "UPDATE SectionTable(AreaID) VALUES ('+IntToStr(ActClient.AreaID)+') WHERE SectionID='+IntToStr(iCount)" The section with the ID "iCount" exists deffinately. The ActClient.AreaID is "2" and its overwriting null data in the "SectionTable" table. What is the problem here? • Rapid taps on an OpenGL ES app introducing input delay

  I am starting out writing a 2D game in OpenGL ES, and I have encountered an odd problem: if I rapidly tap the touchscreen, the input starts lagging behind the display. The more times I tap, the more delay it causes between the input and any indication of that input onscreen. It only happens if I intentionally tap very rapidly, but not from tapping and dragging with any number of fingers. What could be causing this? Excessive details follow: Both accelerometer input and taps are delayed by just tapping. The only events I am responding to are touchesBegan (below) in my EAGLView and accelerometer:(UIAccelerometer *)accelerometer didAccelerate:(UIAcceleration *)acceleration in my Game object. There doesn't seem to be any upper limit to the amount of delay: I've gotten up to 12 seconds of delay by tapping rapidly with five fingers. I have not seen any drops in framerate (it stays constantly at 60 fps) in the OpenGL ES tool in Instruments or by taking 1/the time between updates. • Cassandra instead of MySQL for social networking app

  I am in the middle of building a new app which will have very similar features to Facebook and although obviously it wont ever have to deal with the likes of 400,000,000 million users it will still be used by a substantial user base and most of them will demand it run very very quickly. I have extensive experience with MySQL but a social app offers complexities which MySQL is not well suited too. I know Facebook, Twitter etc have moved towards Cassandra for a lot of their data but I am not sure how far to go with it. For example would you store such things as user data - username, passwords, addresses etc in Cassandra? Would you store e-mails, comments, status updates etc in Cassandra? I have also read alot that something like neo4j is much better for representing the friend relationships used by social apps as it is a graph database. I am only just starting down the NoSQL route so any guidance is greatly appreciated. Would anyone be able to advise me on this? I hope I am not being too general!

• Problem in UITableViewDelegate - RowSelected gives wrong NSIndexPath

  I have a UITableViewSource which I have subclassed. I'm overriding GetCell and using my own subclassed cells, like so: public override UITableViewCell GetCell(UITableView tableView, NSIndexPath indexPath) { MarketItem item=_tableItems[indexPath.Section].Items[indexPath.Row]; MarketCell cell=tableView.DequeueReusableCell(_cellIdentifier) as MarketCell; if (cell==null) { cell=new MarketCell(UITableViewCellStyle.Subtitle,_cellIdentifier,item); } // decorate the cell // ... return cell; } This works but when I get events in my UITableViewDelegate, the index path gets me the wrong cell (events like AccessoryButtonTapped, WillSelectRow etc). The Section and Row numbers look correct but when I do a tableView.CellAt(indexPath) I get the wrong cell. (The row and section numbers again look correct.) Things to note: The table is constantly being updated - items arrive in a different thread which are then InvokeOnMainThread'd Although the table is constantly updated, rows and sections are only added - nothing is re-ordered or deleted If I pause the updates when I get a 'WillSelectRow', it doesn't help Most interestingly (but not a shippable solution) if I make a new cell each time rather than doing DequeueReusableCell, it works correctly. I can't help thinking it's a stupid bug of my own making but can't find it. Any help would be most gratefully received!

• Best way reading from dirty excel sheets

  I have to manipulate some Excel documents with C#. It's a batch process with no user interaction. It's going to parse data into a database, then output nice reports. The data is very dirty and cannot be ready using ADO. The data is nowhere near a nice table format. Best is defined as the most stable(updates less likely to break)/ clear(succinct) code. Fast doesn't matter. If it runs in less than 8 hours I'm fine. I have the logic to find the data worked out. All I need to make it run is basic cell navigation and getvalue type functions. Give me X cell value as string, if it matches Y value with levenshtein distance < 3, then give me Z cell value. My question is, what is the best way to dig into the excel? VSTO? Excel Objects Library? Third Option I'm not aware of?

  I'm getting the following error after a crash in an iPad app that uses CoreMIDI (The * are to blank out the app name): Dyld Error Message: Symbol not found: _MIDINetworkNotificationContactsDidChange Referenced from: /var/mobile/Applications/8F08B78E-929D-4C5A-9F02-08FD5743C17F/***.app/*** Expected in: /System/Library/Frameworks/CoreMIDI.framework/CoreMIDI in /var/mobile/Applications/8F08B78E-929D-4C5A-9F02-08FD5743C17F/***.app/*** Dyld Version: 179.4 When the app launches, I listen for MIDI Network Sessions using [[NSNotificationCenter defaultCenter] addObserver:self selector:@selector(sessionDidChange:) name:MIDINetworkNotificationSessionDidChange object:nil]; [[NSNotificationCenter defaultCenter] addObserver:self selector:@selector(sessionDidChange:) name:MIDINetworkNotificationContactsDidChange object:nil]; Which seems to be what is causing the crash. This is after I call session = [MIDINetworkSession defaultSession]; session.enabled = YES; session.connectionPolicy = MIDINetworkConnectionPolicy_Anyone; MIDIClientCreate(CFSTR("MidiManager"), midiNotifyProc, (void*)self, &midiClientRef); This kind of looks like CoreMIDI library has not been included in the build. Problem is, it IS included in the build as a required framework. (And the deployment target is set to 4.2). I can run the build fine on my iPad and have been testing extensively with other users' iPads also with no problems whatsoever. Also, this is an update to an existing app that has had several updates already with no problems. I just double checked my deployment build and the framework is definitely included, and I just installed that build onto my iPad (with a different provisioning profile from the store) and it works fine also. What could be happening? Could it be that Xcode just did a bad build for the one I sent to Apple, or am I missing something obvious? Could I change the MIDINetworkNotificationSessionDidChange notification symbol to a literal string (@"MIDINetworkNotificationSessionDidChange") to fix things for the mean time? Thanks for any help!

• Database contents setting themselves to 0

  I have a Database that contains 4 tables, however I'm using 1 of them which is separated from the others. In this table I have 4 fields which are varchar and the rest are ints (11 other fields), when the users fill up the DB everything gets saved correctly, however it has happened 3 times so far that the database values for the int's reset to 0 without any apparent reason. At first, I thought, it was because those fields (where the numbers should go) were varchars not ints. However since I changed it, it happened again. I've already double checked my code and I have nothing that even updates or inserts a 0 value. Also I'm using codeigniter and active records which protect against SQL injections AND have XSS filtering enabled, could anyone point out something I might be missing or a reason for this to be happening? Also, I'm pretty sure about the answer of this but, is there ANY way to recover some data?? Other than having to ask everyone to fill in everything again.. =/ ** EDIT ** The Storage Engine is MyISAM and Collation is latin1_swedish_ci, Pack Keys are default, for all intents and purposes it's a normal DB
