• Dreamhost DNS CNAMEs work at my house, not for anyone else

  I have my domain BQQKSHELF.COM that I bought through Dreamhost. I set up a CNAME so that zach.bqqkshelf.com points to my app at zach.heroku.com. The app at Heroku is working fine. Everyone can agree on that. When I go to zach.bqqkshelf.com, everything seems to work okay too. When I ask my roommate to go to it, it works. When I go to it on my iTouch, it works. When I IM my friends and ask them to go to zach.bqqkshelf.com, they get a time out error. How is this possible?

  I have many virtual hosts set up on a web server, each one having its own error and access log.   Today, my favorite number is 14736185 (despite the fact that it did not win me $249million in the MegaMillions lottery...or did it?)!  Why?  Because it is our latest patch release and it is chock-full of good stuff for the Oracle VM 3.0 user.  Oracle VM support customers can find it on My Oracle Support as patch number 14736185.   This can be installed on Oracle VM 3.0.x systems as an incremental patch on top of 3.0.3, so if you previously ran 3.0.3 GA or updated to 3.0.3 patch 1 ( build 150) this will just apply on top.  We're recommending you update to this patch set at your earliest convenience.  For more details, see below but also see Wim Coekaert's blog with related info here. • Two different sites, same IP, same top-level domain, on IIS 7.5 -- one works and the other displays HTTP 404 error

  I'm running a Windows 2008 R2 box with IIS 7.5 as the web server. On IIS, I have two websites: mysubsite1.mysite.com and mysubsite2.mysite.com. There is only one IP on the server and both sites share this IP. Here is how I have the bindings configured: mysubsite1.mysite.com works fine. However, mysubsite2.mysite.com gives me the following error: Not Found HTTP Error 404. The requested resource is not found. Now, if I change the Host name field for mysubsite1.mysite.com to blank and restart the web server, both sites work! The question is why is the host name field for the first site causing an HTTP 404 error for the second site when both sites' Host name fields are filled? I would appreciate any insight. Thank you.

• Recommendations for managing DNS issues when hosting customer sites.

  I'm working at a company which primarily provides SaaS products but also will host some of our customers corporate websites. My question relates to recommendations for managing DNS for client's domain names. My objectives: Not restrict my ability to change the server's IP address such as might happen when I move my servers to a new host. Not have to contact the customer to change their domain's DNS if I need to change the server's IP address. Often times, customers lose this information or have to track down the one person with any knowledge of the domain settings. Map both .clientdomain.com and www.clientdomain.com to the proper IIS site. However, I'm running into a couple of common problems: Sometimes, the DNS console provided by the client's hosting company does not allow for CNAME records. Sometimes, the DNS console provided by the client's hosting company will not let me create a CNAME entry for .spiffydomain.com because the given hosting company has created a SOA record for that entry or simply requires that .spiffydomain.com be an A record. I believe one solution to #2 is to use a wildcard for a CNAME entry (i.e. *.spiffydomain.com). Is that correct? How do other folks that are hosting many customer's site manage change of DNS entries on their servers?

• Recovery from URL structure change?

  in July this year, we have changed the URL structure of the website from: Post: domain.com/blog/post/986/dance/heart-beats-dance-video-by-chinatsu/ Category: domain.com/blog/index/cosplay/ to Post: domain.com/dance/heart-beats-dance-video-by-chinatsu-986/ Category: domain.com/cosplay/ Everything was (supposedly) properly redirected with 301 redirects and it first seemed that the traffic returned after a couple of days, but it has now been close to 2 months and things keep going worse although Google is slowly indexing the changes. What is worrying me even more is that the Pages crawled per day from Webmaster Tools started drastically dropping a few days ago and has just reached a new low in months (from over 2000 to 700). Should I be worried or will things sort out eventually?

  In terms of SEO & SEM if I have a .com and a .co.uk. Would it be better to use the .com and park the .co.uk, If I am selling the product locally (in the uk) and later moving out into the international market? Will I struggle more to compete locally with regards to local searches and Google Adwords, if I make the .com as the primary domain? Does the parking of the .co.uk or the .com effect the relevance of a web domains search locally and internationally?

• Wireless internet connection connects but internet does not work (no packets received). Wired does.

  When I connect my PC via ethernet cable to my ADSL router it works fine. When I connect via Wireless it connects and the internet will work for a random amount of time and then stop working. It stays connected with a strong signal but no packets are received. My laptop/iphone are right next to it and wireless works fine. If I open the Wireless USB status, it says it is connected to my SSID with full strength (54 mps - I am 3 meteres away from my router) and the activty shows as Packets 594 SENT and 105 RECEIVED (this goes up VERY slowly) I have tried the following: Turned off anitvirus and firewall completely. Tested the wifi signal- I am writing this on my laptop which is next to my PC and also has full wifi strength. Tried a different wireless adapter - I dug out an old PCI wireless card - it does the exact same thing. Compared all wireless settings to my laptop. I can ping google.com and it replies (sometimes with packet loss) When I reboot the PC it will connect for a minute or two (random time) and then just stops again. I tried Firefox, IE etc. no joy I have updated all latest versions (Netgear WG111v2) and drivers Checked Event Log - nothing unusual Ping the router (and even connect as admin for the few minutes when the internet does work) Changed the MTU down to 1200 using DrTCP Checked Device Manager for conflicts - none. I ping the router from the PC (192.168.0.10 - 192.168.0.1) and it replies with 4 packets. BUT, on my router admin page (which I access via http on my laptop wirelessly) - if I ping 192.168.0.10 all packets timeout (pinging my laptop 192.168.0.12 works fine) My router admin page shows the leased IP address for 192.168.0.10 (ie it is definitely talking to the router initially) Now I am out of ideas - please help. I think it is an OS/Software issue as I have tried 2 different wireless adapaters (PCI and USB) with the same result but all other wireless devices work fine around mine). It's not the firewall. It is getting assigned an IP address correctly (my PC gets 192.168.0.10, my laptop is .12) It is assigned by DHCP. As soon as I plug in the ethernet cable it all works fine. Repairing the adapter sometimes helps but it will always stop working after a random time. The wireless adapter always shows as connected with Excellent signal but the internet does not work. I am running Windows XP SP3 and have tried a Netgear WG111v2 USB adapter. Thanks in advance! UPDATE: The internet seems to be working, it is just either sending packets too small or slow to work (some small pages load bits of them very slowly but then hang). • Separate php.ini file for each Apache virtual host?

  Is it possible to have a separate php.ini file that overrides the default php.ini file for each virtual host? I'm running Apache/2.2.14, PHP 5.3.2-1. • How to configure cookieless virtual host in Apache2?

  We run over a hundred web applications (growing daily) on a LAMP stack using Apache2 on Ubuntu 10.04. We've would like all requests to static content to be cookieless. We host applications on many different domains, a majority of which as SaSS applications. Many of the domains host instances of the applications on sub domains, ie. myapp.example.com, myapp2.example.com myapp.otherexample.com etc.. At the moment all static content is server relative to the (sub)domain requesting it. As far as I understand the process, I would need to setup a new domain, eg. staticexample.com. In this case is special configuration in the virtual host for this domain required to ensure no cookies are served? Also, would it be possible to instead use static.example.com? In this case what configurations would I need in my virtual host for this subdomain to ensure no cookies are served?

  I have a quick question but I've been struggling to find the best solution: I have two java webapps and wordpress (php) that I need to serve through my Prod website: App #1 should be accessed when pointing to www.example.com/ (this would have other url too such as "www.example.com/book") App #2 should be accessed when pointing to www.example.com/manage Finally WordPress would be accessed at www.example.com/info How can I configure apache to serve all these three instances at the same time? • Cannot escape character '@' in fstab file

  I want to attach remote FTP directory as a local directory in my system. I will use curlftpfs line in the fstab file , but to login I have to pass my user name and password. The user name has a special character (@) and it needs to be escaped via octal ascii code. The octal ascii for '@' is 100. But when I try to enter the following into the FSTAB file, curlftpfs#myself\100myself.com:ftpPassword@ftp://ftp.mysite.com /mnt/somedir I get an error saying Error connecting to ftp: Couldn't resolve host 'myself.com:ftpPassword@ftp://ftp.mysite.com' The fstab does not recognize escaped symbol @ (\100) and thinks that the FTP site should start immediately after the @ symbol (just like I haven't escaped it). Can someone help? Why I cannot escape @, when it can be done for space character, for example?

• Forwarding emails from a domain

  I generally use Google Apps to handle email domains. I'm unfortunately stuck in an infinite loop with Google [1] for one the domains I recently picked up. Right now I use Zerigo's awesome DNS services. How can I get anything@mydomain.com forwarded to my Gmail account? Better yet if this is a free/cheap solution and can work with multiple aliases going to different real email addresses (a@mydomain.com - joe@gmail.com, b@mydomain.com - [email protected]) [1] Long story. I alternate between "Sorry, you've reached a login page for a domain that isn't using Google Apps." and "This domain has already been registered with Google Apps." Seems like many others are having this issue and Google isn't doing anything about it.
