• Software development project inception phase

  Currently our team develops Web Applications and now we are going to Windows Forms applications. I have created the inception phase for our Windows Forms project structure. eg: ApplicationSolution --> Security Project(Login Authentication) a. Users will be registered with different applications in our application database. eg: ProjectApplicationId|ProjectName | UserId 1 |ProjectApplication1| user 2 |ProjectApplication2| user b. Execute Application (Start) c. On Security dialog, application automatically get the userid of the user and see all the application it is registered using System.Security.Principal.WindowsIdentity.GetCurrent() eg: Prototype Welcome User! Please Choose Appliations you are registered on below: ProjectApplication1 <--this will be a dropdown ProjectApplication2 Password: [*********************] [Access Application Button] d. User selects the application with its password e. If the password is incorrect (application.exit()) else execute Selected Application eg: ProjectApplication1 is selected then execute ProjectApplication1 --> ProjectApplication1 --> ProjectApplication2 --> Many to come ++ if ProjectApplications has been closed then restart security Application. My questions on this use case: Is my use case possible? Can you give me any recommendations ? Currently we use setup and deployment to create installer in each Windows Forms application.

• No Visual studio template information found. See application log in Event viewer for more details

  I tried installing the .NET Framework 4.0 and ASP.NET MVC 2 Framework through the web platform installer. It took a long time and finally i had a restart in between for .NET 4 installation and after that due to my system hang problems had to do a couple of restarts. And after that tried installing the ASP.NET MVC 2 alone and it succeeded. (During this time i had all my VS instances closed).  I am having VS 2008 SP1. And finally after opening VS 2008 and clicking on new project it said the above error no template info found. and i dint have even a single template in the new project template selection window. So these are the steps that i did for recovering the same.  Start Menu --> Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 --> Visual Studio Tools. Right-click over the Visual Studio Command Prompt shortcut and make sure you select Run as Administrator. Once the VS Command Prompt comes up, execute the command 1. "devenv /installvstemplates" 2. "devenv /resetsettings"  And that worked out. No Visual studio template information found. See application log in Event viewer for more detail

• Broke Ubuntu 12.04 either with Screencloud or Ubuntu Tweak

  Earlier today I installed the Screen Shot app "Screencloud" and after the installation Firefox was having problems. I didn't think much about it, just closed Firefox, then proceeded to change the toolbar opacity on Ubuntu Tweak. After restarting my system, hoping it would fix Firefox (because, you know, restarting fixes everything ;) ) I am able to go to the Log In Screen, type in my password, but then I get 3 errors regarding the Screencloud Ubuntu One, Imgur, and Dropbox plugins. After clicking the "Okay" on all three errors, all I see is my wallpaper. I am not able to access the terminal VIA CtrlAltT, but I am able to log out VIA CtrlAltDelete. I have tried all desktop environments I have installed (that, except for Unity 2D, has to do with Cairo Dock.) I hope I have provided enough information. If you need more, please ask. Please help! I would like to not have to re-install Ubuntu. Other info: OS: Ubuntu 12.04 I also have a Ubuntu 12.10 Live USB, but Ubuntu 12.10 hasn't run very well on any of my computers.

• How can I debug VNC screen repainting issues?

  I have what some might consider a trivial use for VNC, but I'd like to get it to work and it's technically interesting to me. My use case is that I'd like sometimes to be able to control my desktop from my living room while watching tv. The desktop runs Ubuntu, currently 12.04, but that may change soon. I'm using the default Vino server. I'd like to control it from my IPad and I have a nicely performing WiFi. I got the well-regarded (if reviews can be believed) app Vnc Viewer for the iPad. It's not working as well as I'd hoped. The problem is the speed of repainting. It's abysmally slow. I can click a close button, walk over to the desktop and see that the window has closed, but on the iPad, the VNC Client won't show the close for minutes if ever. I've noticed that CLOSING windows takes a lot longer to update than to open them. So the question is is this primarily client or server-caused? And if server-caused what can be done about it? Is Vino the best client or is something else better? Thanks

• New "delay" keyword for JavaScript

  I had a great idea for a new javascript keyword "delay", but I don't know what I can do to bring it to the new specification. Also I want to know what you guys think about it and if it's even realistic. What does the delay keyword ? The delay keyword does nothing more than stop the execution of the current stack and immediately continues to the next "job" in the queue. But that's not all! Instead of discarding the stack, it adds it to the end of the queue. After all "jobs" before it are done, the stack continues to execute. What is it good for? delay could help make blocking code non-blocking while it still looks like synchronous code. A short example: setTimeout(function(){ console.log("two"); },0); console.log("one"); delay; //since there is currently another task in the queue, do this task first before continuing console.log("three"); //Outputs: one, two, three This simple keyword would allow us to create a synchronous-looking code wich is asynchronous behind the scenes. Using node.js modules, for example, would no longer be impossible to use in the browser without trickery. There would be so many possibilites with such a keyword! Is this pattern useful?   This question is phrased in a very specific way - it asks for references. There was a similar question posted which was closed because it was considered a duplicate to a good code question. The Programmers FAQ points out that answers should have references - or its just an unproductive sharing of (seemingly) baseless opinions. There is a difference between shortest code and most elegant code. This becomes clear in several seminal texts: Dijkstra, E. W. (1972). The humble programmer. Communications of the ACM, 15(10), 859–866. Kernighan, B. W., & Plauger, P. J. (1974). Programming style: Examples and counterexamples. ACM Comput. Surv., 6(4), 303–319. Knuth, D. E. (1984). Literate programming. The Computer Journal, 27(2), 97–111. doi:10.1093/comjnl/27.2.97 They all note the importance of clarity over brevity. Kernighan & Plauger (1974) provide descriptions of "good" code, but "good code" is certainly not synonymous with "elegant". Dijkstra (1972) indicates that beautiful programs optimize efficiency but are not opaque. This sort of conversation is qulaitatively different than a random sharing of opinions.   I would like to show a second image appearing while a "door" is closing on my character. I've got my character in the middle of the screen and a door coming from the left. When the door passes my character, I would like to have this second image appearing little by little. So far, I've gotten by with fadingOut the character and then fadingIn my second image of the character at the same position when the door is completely closed, but I would like to have both of them at the same time. (the effect that image 1 becomes image 2 when the door is sliding from left to right). Would you know how to do this with Cocos2d? • Touchpad stopped working on an Acer AspireOne D255E

  I have a less than a year old Acer AspireOne D255E with a fresh install of Ubuntu 11.10. Everything has been working fine. Great OS and great netbook. But today the touchpad stopped working. It had been working fine. I closed the netbook and when I opened it again, a couple of hours later, I could not move the pointer with the touchpad. I can not get the pointer to move. I cleaned the touchpad surface well, just in case. Everything else is working fine. All the software updates are up-to-date. I have rebooted several times with no solution. I have attached an USB mouse and the pointer works well. What can I do to troubleshoot the problem? I have gone to the System Settings, touchpad section, and there is not much that I can do there. I would like to determine first if it is a hardware or software issue and then how to resolve it. Is there a way that I can reinstall the touchpad drivers. just in case it is a software problem? I have been using Ubuntu for nearly a year now and am very happy with it. Are there any wise Ubuntu gurus out there who can help me? Thank you for reading this note.

• How is software used in critical life-or-death systems tested?

  An airplane, as opposed to, for example, a website, is a system where any failure in certain systems is completely unacceptable, since errors in e.g. flight monitoring can cause the autopilot to malfunction and do a dive. Obviously, this doesn't happen since the brilliant engineers at Boeing and Airbus have checks in the autopilot to make sure it doesn't suddenly decide a dive is a perfectly acceptable and safe maneuver. Or perhaps the computer crashes, and the pilots in the newer fly-by-wire aircraft can no longer actually fly the plane. Of course, there are various safety procedures and redundancies built into these systems to prevent a crash (of both the software and the aircraft). However, on the other hand, it's quite obvious that software isn't perfect—both open source and closed source software do crash regularly, and only the simplest "Hello World" program doesn't fail. How can the engineers who design the software systems in the aeronautic, medical, and other life-or-death industries manage to test their software so that it doesn't fail (and if it does fail, at least fail gracefully)? I'm desperately hoping that you're not all going to go: "Oh, I work for Boeing/Airbus/(some other company) and it's not! Have fun on your next flight/hospital visit."

• Why have minimal user/handwritten code and do everything in XAML?

  I feel the MVVM community has become overzealous like the OO programmers in the 90's - it is a misnomer MVVM is synonymous with no code. From my closed StackOverflow question: Many times I come across posts here about someone trying to do the equivalent in XAML instead of code behind. Their only reason being they want to keep their code behind 'clean'. Correct me if I am wrong, but is not the case that: XAML is compiled too - into BAML - then at runtime has to be parsed into code anyway. XAML can potentially have more runtime bugs as they will not be picked up by the compiler at compile time - from incorrect spellings - these bugs are also harder to debug. There already is code behind - like it or not InitializeComponent(); has to be run and the .g.i.cs file it is in contains a bunch of code though it may be hidden. Is it purely psychological? I suspect it is developers who come from a web background and like markup as opposed to code. EDIT: I don't propose code behind instead of XAML - use both - I prefer to do my binding in XAML too - I am just against making every effort to avoid writing code behind esp in a WPF app - it should be a fusion of both to get the most out of it. UPDATE: Its not even Microsoft's idea, every example on MSDN shows how you can do it in both.

I am not exactly sure what the bold part implies. Lets say that I'm creating some library, and I license it under the MIT license. Someone decides to fork that library and to create a closed-source, commercial version. According to the license, he should be free to do that. However, what does he additionally need to do under those terms? Credit me as the creator? I guess the "above copyright notice" refers to the "Copyright (C) [..." part, but, wouldn't that list me as the author of his code (although I technically typed out the code)? And wouldn't including the "permission notice" in what is now his library practically license it under the same conditions that I licensed my own library in? Or, am I interpreting this incorrectly? Does that refer to my obligations to include the copyright and the permission notice?

  I've trolled the internets to make hdmi work on my system Ubuntu 12.04 software center kernel 3.5 uname: Linux ubuntu 3.5.0-18-generic #29~precise1-Ubuntu SMP...x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux open source radeon drivers vgaswitcheroo (hybrid intel/radeon gpu): I boot with intel, not radeon, running. (and recall that with kernel 3.5, vgaswitcheroo now gives info on a third item, "DIS-Audio"; it indicates pwr on my system) ( /etc/rc.local: chown user:user /sys/kernel/debug/ # change "username" with your user name echo OFF /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch ) grub indeed now has "radeon.audio=1" for testing audio, I did aplay -l which gave me the card and device, which made me try aplay -D plughw:1,3 /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav and lo! I get crystal clear sound on my hdtv. If I play an mp3 file as the argument to that command, I get noise as, I guess, aplay interprets the mp3 code as a wav. If I play a .wav that is not in the /usr/share/sounds/alsa/ directory, I get nothing. Internet flash video in browser plays no sound over hdmi. Both system sounds control and pavucontrol have hdmi cedar selected. Alas, I can not get sound for any gui test (left, right). Why would only aplay, and only when directed with "-D plughw", yield sound over hdmi? I've also tried only using one sound program at a time, if it was a limitation of alsa, so I tried aplay with web browser and even the sound control gui closed. I tried each of the last two, running alone. No improvement. alsamixer only shows hda intel and I think it's only the intel audio, not the hdmi.

• Selling an open source project: some issues

  I am the creator / main developer of a small sized open source (PHP) project (GPL3). Currently there is a development team of 3 people (me included). This team has been quite active for some time, but since almost 2 years not much has happened. I myself have decided I want to stop working on the project, but I can't just leave the project because I care about it and I know if I abandon it, it will just be a matter of time before the project completely dies. At this moment, there are still some users and the project is only slightly out-of-date. So I'm thinking about selling the whole project. Of course I'd need to get consent of the other developers, but for now I'm assuming that's not a big problem. So at this moment I have 2 questions: 1) If the project would be sold to a commercial party, would it be possible for them to convert the project to closed source? I would prefer to sell the project to a company/organization that would continue the development under an open source license. 2) Does anyone have any tips to find interested parties? • How does a CS student negotiate in/after a job interview?

  Alright, I've gotten to the second step in the interview process. At this point I'm working under the assumption that I might be offered a position -- flying my butt to Redmond would be quite an expense if they weren't at least considering me for something (*crosses fingers*). So, if one is offered a position, how should a CS student negotiate? I've heard a few strategies about dealing with software companies when you are being considered for a hire, but most of them are considering the developer in a powerful position. In such examinations, (s)he has lots of job experience, and may even be overqualified for what the employer is looking for. (s)he is part of a small job market of qualified developers, because 99% of applications companies receive are from those who are woefully under qualified. I'm in a completely different position. I think I compare favorably to most of my fellow students, and I have been a programmer for almost 10 years, but often I still feel green compared to most of my coworkers. I'm in a position where the employer holds most of the chips; they'd be doing me quite a favor by hiring me. I think this scenario is considerably different than the targets for most of the advice I've seen. Above all, I don't want to be such a prick negotiating that it damages my chances to actually operate in a position, even if it means not negotiating at all. How should one approach a scenario like this? P.S. If this is off topic feel free to close it -- I think it's borderline and I'm of the opinion that it's better to ask and be closed than not ask at all ;)

• Is there an open source clone of a game in the Total War Series?

  I loved Shogun:Total War gameplay and then later on spent weeks re-enacting historical wars and battles with Europa Barbarorum. It's a mod for Rome:TW that focuses on historical accuracy in the peoples, units, sounds, visuals, everything from macro mechanics to actual battles (e.g. a lot more missiles). Since that time I kind of turned my back on Windows cause it sucks and use Linux cause Mac sucks even worse. So as I miss that game (Eur. Barb.) and consider it the most realistic RTS to date, I'd like to know if there are any free and open source alternatives to it because ever since I'm under linux, I became addicted to FOSS so I also turned my back on paying (even kickstarters) for closed source, pay to play games. I have found a clone/alternative for everyone of the best games like Minecraft, CSS, Natural Selection, TA/SupCom etc... It's kind of the last one I need. The Spring engine is amazing for example, is there another open source project of the source in current development? Or would Spring itself be enough (it certainly looks capable) to make it? • Repeat use of Schema / Rich Snippets Markup i.e LocalBusiness Data

  I am unable to find official wording and I'm hoping that some Rich Snippets/Schema Guru can give me some insight into proper usage of repeated content when it comes to using markup. I'm building a site that wants to use Schema as the markup type and the owner would like as much usage as possible. The business name, telephone and address will appear on every page now is it valid or even useful to use Rich Snippets on every page where this information is displayed. • Looking for a small, light scene graph style abstraction lib for shader based OpenGL

  I'm looking for a 'lean and mean' c/c++ scene graph library for OpenGL that doesn't use any deprecated functionality. It should be cross platform (strictly speaking I just dev on Linux so no love lost if it doesn't work on Windows), and it should be possible to deploy to mobile targets (ie OpenGLES2, and no crazy mandatory dependencies that wouldn't port well to modern mobile frameworks like iOS, Android, etc), with a license that's compatible with closed source software (LGPL or more liberal). Specific nice-to-haves would be: Cameras and Viewers (trackball, fly-by, etc) Object transform hierarchies (if B is a child of A, and you move A, B has the same transform applied to it) Simple animation Scene optimization (frustum culling, use VBOs, minimize state changes, etc) Text I've played around with OpenSceneGraph a lot and it's pretty amazing for fixed function pipeline stuff, but I've had a few of problems using it with the programmable pipeline and after going through their mailing list, it seems several people have had similar issues (going back years). Kitware's VES looks neat (http://www.vtk.org/Wiki/VES), but VES + VTK is pretty heavy. VTK is also typically for analyzing scientific data and I've read that it's not that appropriate for a general use case (not that great at rendering a lot of objects on scene,etc) I'm currently looking at VisualizationLibrary (http://www.visualizationlibrary.org/documentation/pag_gallery.html) which looks like it offers some of the functionality I'd like, but it doesn't explicitly support mobile targets. Other solutions like Ogre, Horde3D, Irrlicht, etc tend to be full on game engines and that's not really what I'm looking for. I'd like some suggestions for other libraries that I may have missed... please note I'm not willing to roll my own solution from scratch.

• Invalid Html Response and JS Errors when you open your Application in Visual Studio 2013

   I was working on an application which uses Telerik controls. The application was working fine for a while. Suddenly, the application stopped working. I mean lot of my application pages becoming very very ugly. I found JavaScript errors on every Browser's console. When I check the page view-source, the generated HTML was messy and invalid. This was only happening with my local machine. If someone else on my network accesses my application pages, he will get the correct HTML and no JavaScript errors. My mind was blowing because the same page was generating invalid HTML(and JavaScript errors) when I access the page using a local browser but generate correct HTML(and no JavaScript errors) when someone else access my application page remotely. Then I realized that I the only change I made last was opening my application in Visual Studio 2013 RTM which I installed few days ago. I closed the Visual Studio 2013, everything work like a charm. Then I became100% sure that this is only happening due to new Visual Studio 2013 feature called Browser Link. I just open the application again and add this in web.config. • Best industry to work for as a developer.

  Hi guys, Hmmm, StackOverflow now warns me of: "The question you're asking appears subjective and is likely to be closed." I've been an avid java (J2SE, JEE) developer for over 5 years now (and I'm not complaining, even though I want to go back to Delphi & C++). My contract has just ended and I'm wondering of possible job to further tackle. I've done banking and insurance industry for all my career (with 1 year on a Fortuner 500 company) and pretty much, banking is the slowest (and boring) industry to work for (IMHO) since they're strict in their business practices (fair enough). The upside is that they pay. My question is: What is the best industry for a developer, who tends to get bored relatively quickly, to work for? Is it also worthwhile for me to do consultancy (and if so, what type of consultancy)? PS There's no gaming industry in South Africa, so suggesting it requires that I have to travel to a country where gaming is alive! I don't see the Community Wiki checkbox, so I don't know how to make this a wiki.

• Font corruption: lines through characters

  I have an odd problem where a one-pixel high white line is displayed through certain letters of text. Almost always only a single character type is affected at once, and only in one font size (though that size can change over time). Most of the time things are fine, but this happens several times a day. It's been happening ever since I upgraded to 10.10. I have noticed few patterns: It might be a problem with Firefox (I'm currently using the nightly ppa, but it occurred in 3.6 also) - but this could just be because I spend most of my time on my computer either at a browser or text editors. I seem to remember it happening with the buttons on various Gnome dialogs. It never occurs in text I've typed, be it an email, url bar, etc. In Firefox it happens across tabs, and the problem remains even if they are closed or reloaded; only restarting the program can fix it. Two examples (in the first, only the larger "r" is corrupted): Any help would be appreciated, thanks.
