• Building a complete program?

  Reading books, watching videos, and reviewing tutorials is all very easy. Taking notes and actually learning the material may be slightly harder, but even then, anyone with a decent brain and a fair amount of interest, it's easy enough (not to mention, fun). The thing is, it doesn't really prepare you to write a full program or website. Let's say you're those teens (only in highschool, no true (college level) computer science or programming courses, and no real world experience), and you come out with Groupon. Or even Mark Zuckerburg, sure he was a genius, and he was a very capable programmer... but how? How do you recommend that people who are not necessarily new to programming, but new to programming real applications and real programmers go about developing it? What is the "development process" - especially for single programmers (or maybe 2-3 teens)? Also, as far as web development goes, what is the process? Was something like Facebook or Groupon written with a framework (like CodeIgniter or Zend for PHP)? Or do they develop their own frameworks? I'm not asking how to come up with a great idea, but how to implement great ideas in an effective way? Does anyone have advice? I've read a couple of books on both C and C++ (primarily the C Programming Language and the C++ Programming Language) and taken AP Computer Science (as well as read a few additional books on Java and OOP). I also have read a few tutorials on PHP (and CodeIgniter) and Python. But I'm still in highschool, and I'm technically not even old enough to work at an internship for a few more months.

• Adventures in Lab Management Configuration: CMMI Edition Part 1 of 3

  I remember at one point someone telling me how close Migrate was to Migraine. This was a process that included an environment from TFS 2008 to TFS 2010, needed to be migrated too as far as the process template goes.  Here we are talking about CMMI v4.2 to CMMI v5.0.  Now, the process to migrate the TFS Infrastructure is one thing, migrating the Process Template is a different deal, not hard … just involved. Followed a combination of steps that came from a blog post as the main guidance and then MSDN (as suggested on the guidance post) to complement some tasks and steps. Again, the focus I have here is CMMI. The high level steps taken to enable the TFS 2008 CMMI v4.2 migrated to TFS 2010 Process Template are: 1)  Backup the Collection, Configuration and Warehouse Databases. 2)  Downloaded the Process Template using Visual Studio 2010. 3) Exported, modified and imported Bug Type Definition 4) Exported, modified and imported Scenario or Requirement Type Definition. 5) Created and imported bug field mappings. Now, we can attempt to connect using Test Manager, and you should be able to get this going. After that was done, it was time to enroll VMs that already existed in the environment.  This was a bit more challenging, but in the end it was a matter of just analyzing the changes that had been made to had a temporary work around from the time we migrated to the time we converted the Work Items and such and added fields to enable communication between the project and the Test and Lab Manager component. There are 2 more parts to this post, the second will describe the detailed steps taken to complete the Process Template update and the third will talk about the gotchas and fixes for the Lab Management portion.

• is there such a thing as a ip femtocell, and what does it do?

  My dad mentioned a co-worker suggested using a device, that might use cdma to route calls through IP to save costs on a certain overseas project we're on- since our home base is quite far from there. I've never heard of such a device, so if it does, i'm wondering, if its specific to particular ISPs, or if you can just pick one off the shelf, plug it into an arbitraty internet connection, and make calls using it and a cellphone of some sort? As you can tell, details are sketchy, so... if such a device dosen't exist, saying so might be a right answer ;)

• Embedded Tomcat Cluster

  Can someone please explain with an example how an Embedded Tomcat Cluster works. Would a load balancer be necessary? Since we're using embedded tomcat, how would two separate jar files (each a standalone web application with their own embedded tomcat instance) know where eachother are and let eachother know their status, etc? • How to add display resolution fo an LCD in Ubuntu 12.04? xrandr problem

  I am fresh for Ubuntu and Linux in general. I have installed Ubuntu 12.04 and stuck trying to setup correct resolution for my LCD display. • Increase the compression performance of VPN

  I am currently switching from a system with HPN-SSH tunnels and enabled compression to something VPN based. I have tried tinc and n2n so far, hamachi requires a library I do not have. In my primitive benchmarks I am not satisfied with the achievable bandwidth compared to the SSH tunnels. In tinc the low LZO setting performed best, but compression is only available in UDP mode. Ideally I would like to have a TCP-based VPN with a multi-threaded compression. Can you suggest me some ideas how to increase the performance? Would it be possible to somehow put a compression filter in front of the tun interface? Or are there any VPN implementations that might be better suited for my needs (fast compression, TCP-based, switch mode, does not have to be super-secure)? I would consider tunnelling Ethernet over SSH, but according to some articles it is not advisable.

• Pentium 4 Computer Won't Power Up

  I have a faulty Pentium 4 workstation with data that I would like to retrieve. Here are the symptoms & what I've done so far: Machine is totally dead. Motherboard LED is lit but that is the only sign of life. I have replaced the power supply and bypassed the on/off switch. Tried a PC Analyzer motherboard tester but didn't have any power to the card. Unpluggged the P4 cable from the motherboard, hit the on/off switch, the power supply fan comes on and I get codes from the analyzer but nothing that seems to be of any value. Machine does not boot. Will not shut down by hitting the switch. Bad motherboard or could it be a bad CPU cooling fan?

• Paypal hide address [closed]

  I hope this question is okay for this website, to me it seemed most fitting among the stackexchange sites at least. 8) I want to release my software for free, but allow donations for it. So far, I couldn't find any option in Google Checkout to set up a donation button (and website link). I am registered as merchant, but am still waiting for my bank account verification code, that may be the reason. But then, I guess I will not be able to use it anyway because it seems the 'Donation' functionality requires to be a nonprofit organization. My understanding of 'Donation' seems to be unknown to Google (yet). So unfortunately, the one remaining option is Paypal. However, even having upgraded my account to a business account, I can find no option how to remove my living address from the Checkout pages. Basically I have nothing to hide ;) but feel uncomfortable having my address displayed publicly because of the kind of software I'm offering. We live in a world with crazy people it seems, and I don't want to have nightmares of people knocking on my doors at night. So is there a way to deactivate my address from being displayed on Paypal's checkout pages?

• Is there anyway I can secure my connection when I try to log in to my router remotely?

  I'm trying to configure my desktop to be accessed remotely. Here's what I've done so far: enabled wake on lan / remote wake up on all interfaces. I'm using logmein as my remote desktop application. setup DDNS so that I can log in to my router. When I try to remotely log in to my router it says that it is not encrypted there anyone can see my log in information. What can I do to make this a more secure setup? Any other suggestions or different methods will be greatly appreciated.

  I attached two identical hard drives to my linux machine. Then using gparted I formated the first 1024 mb at the beginning of each drive as linux swap space. Then I went into system-administration-disk utility. In there I went to file-create-RAID array. I selected the remaining space in each of the two identical hard drives and created a striped raid array. After the array was created, a warning message appeared. It said "The partition is misaligned by 522240 bytes. This may result in very poor performance. Repartitioning is suggested." What do I do now? As far as I can tell, the partitions are identical.

• Coordinate and positioning problem on iOS with cocos2d-x

  I'm using cocos2d-x alongside with Marmalade and running some tests and tutorials before starting an actual project with them. So far things are working reasonably well on the windows simulator, Android and even on Blackberry's Playbook, but on iOS devices (iPhone and iPad) the positioning seems to be off. To make things clearer, I put together a scene that just draws an image in the middle of the screen. It worked as expected on everything else, but this is the result I got on an iPhone: To get the coordinates for the center of the screen I'm using the VisibleRect class from the TestCpp sample. It just uses sharedOpenGLView to get the visible size and visible origin, and calculate the center from that. • Should I make a seperate unit test for a method, if it only modifies the parent state?

  Should classes, that modify the state of the parent class, but not itself, be unit tested separately? And by separately, I mean putting the test in the corresponding unit test class, that tests that specific class. I'm developing a library based on chained methods, that return a new instance of a new type in most cases, where a chained method is called. The returned instances only modify the root parent state, but not itself. Overly simplified example, to get the point across: public class BoxedRabbits { private readonly Box _box; public BoxedRabbits(Box box) { _box = box; } public void SetCount(int count) { _box.Items += count; } } public class Box { public int Items { get; set; } public BoxedRabbits AddRabbits() { return new BoxedRabbits(this); } } var box = new Box(); box.AddRabbits().SetCount(14); Say, if I write a unit test under the Box class unit tests: box.AddRabbits().SetCount(14) I could effectively say, that I've already tested the BoxedRabbits class as well. Is this the wrong way of approaching this, even though it's far simpler to first write a test for the above call, then to first write a unit test for the BoxedRabbits separately?

• WSUS Showing Incorrect Version & Client Update Failure but they can check-in

  One of the issues we are having is the clients will not download the updates from our WSUS server. They check-in as they are suppose too and find applicable updates but they are unable to actually download and install them. The GPO is set correctly. We decided to install the patch KB2720211to see if it would help eleviate this issue but it did not. In fact, even stranger, if I check the version that is installed on WSUS it reads 3.2.7600.226 but as far as I know it should read 3.2.7600.251. If I check Add/Remove programs to see what Windows Updates have been installed it even lists for WSUS that KB2720211 has been installed at version 3.2.7600.251. To install this update I followed the following directions Question: Has anyone seen this issue where the patch is installed yet not showing the correct version? What can I try to get my clients to update?

  I already do backups from my main computer to my server computer using synctoy. But now I also want to do off-site backup. My idea so far: have source hard drive (we'll call S) at home have backup hard drive at work called B have transport hard drive called T connect T at work and record index of files on B take T home and check index of S and note new/changed/deleted files and copy changed files to T take T to work and update S repeat Its basically a sneakernet and using all of the advantages of it. High bandwidth, low latency. Is there some software to do this, or do I have to write it myself?

• How do I rescue files from the encrypted home folder via live USB stick?

  I know, this has been asked and answered all over the internet already. However, I start feeling stupid, since the informations there are not helping me. Just this morning, I wanted to install the newest update to 13.10. After the download, when it came to the actual installing, the install program froze and didn't do anything for hours. At that time, I was still logged in. The computer was working and everything was accessable to me. However, I made the mistake and didn't immediately make safety copies of everything. Instead, I just rebooted. Long story short: My computer even fails to reset to a previous version via Grub. But I am able to boot from a USB stick and, after starting Nautilus, I see my home folder on the HD. I would now like to copy its contents onto an external harddisk. Problem 1: I have no rights to access the folder like that. Problem 2: It is encrypted. Problem 3: I don't know how to give myself the rights to access the folder nor do I know how to encrypt it. I assume that it might help that I still know these things: - my old login name - my old login phrase - a 32 characters long string of hexadecimal numbers that I copied to my list of passwords as "Ubuntu Encryption Code". I copied it digitally right after installing Ubuntu the first time and encrypting the home folder, so there won't be any typos. I am sure of that. The solutions that I saw so far, tell me that I need the "encryption phrase". But when I follow the instructions and use this phrase that I have in my list, I only get messages of denial. Can anyone help me through this special problem, please?

• Employers and intellectual property 2

  I have a question about intellectual property, I am currently a manager in a small manufacturing firm. The owners are driven by greed and don't appreciate the development process of complex machinery and are happy just to send things out half done. I on the other hand think that it should be done properly as breakdown in the field can be costly, embarrassing. They seem to have all of us running around doing most of the work out of hours using the attitude of "Be grateful to have a job" yet no one has a contract or any security or any agreement in place. For a couple of the projects i am using PLC's and doing the code in my own time and the testing during company time, and i am aware that they cannot support their own machines if i left, but as i created the code in my own time who owns it? The have asked my to put in a shutdown code for a maintenance request after a given length of time, could this be classed as criminal damage or anything illegal apart from immoral? (we sell the machines with 12 month warrantee, shut down after) But as time goes on I'm getting rather fed up of the companies attitude toward the client. I am considering keeping the clients as my own and get them to contact me directly In the shutdown code. By doing something like this is a trial version contact me for a full license? I wouldn't feel bad for my current employer as he is not afraid to S***t on people as he has been evolved in numerous law suits and has over 30 failed companies leaving people and customers high and dry, we have took the company this far on the reputation of the workers and and i can see things heading like all the other companies he has owned and taking our reputations with him. So i suppose now i have set the scene, if i code into it to contact me directly in the shutdown could there be any legal impact on me, as i rightly or wrongly think i own the code and designs? • Simulating network latency for localhost connection on Windows 7

  I need to simulate network latency to a program running on the local computer, connecting to a local service. Thus far I have tried dummynet (a windows build of ipfw) which I got working after some trial and error. While it generally works, I can't seem to get it to filter localhost traffic. Even after adding a rule from any to any which affects external traffic, this makes no difference for local connections. I would appreciate if anyone knows how to simulate local latency using dummynet or a different tool. The tool should be able to simulate latency generically in IP packets, (TCP and UDP) and not be protocol specific.

• Ubuntu on Samsung NP700Z5B - no Grub

  I just bought a Samsung NP700Z5B laptop. Gorgeous machine and great performance! I do 2 things when I get a new laptop: Format the HD and install Winblows from a CD to ditch the bloatware Install some variant of Linux on it (lately Ubuntu) Step 1 worked fine (until earlier today), but I haven't been able to install Ubuntu on it for the past 3 days! I've tried Mint12, Ubuntu 12.04, Ubuntu 11.10, Ubuntu 11.04 and Ubuntu 10.04. The live CD and the installations all run fine and report no problems, but when I reboot grub is nowhere to be found! The system goes directly to Winblows! I've tried booting from the liveCD and re-installing grub via the chroot and purge & reinstall methods (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2) and neither makes a difference. I've also tried copying the boot sector: dd if=/dev/sda of=linux.bin bs=512 count=1 and putting it on c: then setting bcdedit to add the entry to the Windows bootloader with no results. Earlier today I decided to try and set my boot partition as an EFI boot partition ... bad choice, now I don't even have the Winblows boot loader. I've officially ran out of ideas. Tried calling Samsung, but they're closed (they'd probably say something stupid along the lines of "Samsung recommends Windows 7" ... I've had Dell say that to me). Any help would be greatly appreciated. Update 1 Tried re-installing 12.04 and now I get the screen continously turning off and back on, but still no sign of booting ... it has been doing it for 15 mins so far (I set the boot partition type to ext2 instead of ext4) Update 2 Well ... this just gets better and better. I inserted the installation USB key to reboot it and the flickering stopped for about a minute (remained on) then it started turning off and on again

• Ldap access lists users even if user has no rights...

  I am trying to set up a more complex Active Directory structure for some testing purposes. What I did so far: set up 2 windows (one 2008 and one 2003) to control the same domain set up an Organizational Unit (ou): Developers set up 2 child OUs: "one" and "two" each OU has it's admin: adminOne and adminTwo I denied all access to OU "two" by removing on the Security tab all the groups I don't want to access it. now, when I log in as adminOne and I try to click on OU "two" it says I don't have permissions to see the users and properties of "two" - this is perfect, it's what I want Here comes my problem: I do a LDAP query with the adminOne user on the "Developers" What I expect to happen: I expect to retrieve the users from Developer - One I expect to NOT be able to retrieve the users from Developers - Two What actually happens: ldap shows all the users, both from Developers - One and Developers - Two, even if the user should not have permissions to Developers - Two And now my question: is there any specific settings on Windows 2003 or 2008 Active Directory servers which allow or deny access over LDAP? I could not find any.

• Installing 10.04 server on HP xw9400 Workstation with RAID 5

  I have a workstation that was given to me that is a friggen powerhouse, so I figured I would set it up as my development and demo server. This is my first experience installing Ubuntu onto a RAID array and so far it has not been a fun one. I have been following the Advanced Installation guide for installing Ubuntu 10.04 server, and it says that there will be an option on the Partition Disks screen to manually create the partitions, but the only options I have are: Configure iSCSI volumes Undo changes to partitions Finish partitioning and write changes to disk Just before I got to that screen I got a message that said: One or more drives containing Serial ATA RAID configurations have been found. Do you wish to activate these RAID devices? It doesn't matter whether I answer yes or no to that, I still get the same Partition Disks screen. When I try to select Finish partitioning and write changes to disk I just get the No root file system error. Has anyone else experienced this, and how do I get past it? Can I not run Ubuntu on this machine?

  I have set up my server to allow key/pair authentication by following instructions similar to what is found in this post. As far as I can tell that is working correctly. If I do the following, for example, it works correctly: ssh [email protected] It will NOT prompt me for a password. This is what I want to happen. However if I write a small bash script like this: #!/bin/bash -x ssh [email protected] and execute with: sudo ./mytestscript.sh ...it will prompt me with: [email protected]'s password: What am I doing wrong? I need to be able to login from within my script without being prompted for a password!

• Problems dualbooting Ubuntu because of UEFI

  I have an X-series Asus laptop which I just bough about a month ago. I want to dualboot Ubuntu - Windows. I can easily access LiveUSB with both UEFI enabled and disabled. I heard that there were problems with UEFI, so I disabled it. After I've installed the system I couldn't access it. It just boots to Windows straight. Another unusual thing, that never happened to me before was that the partition editor wanted me to create a BIOS reserved area, which I did, but not at the beginning of the table. Any ideas how to access the Ubuntu partition? As far as I can guess both Windows and Ubuntu have to be both of the same type of boot, either Legacy or EFI. This is not the case of what I have now. So, if I reinstall Ubuntu in UEFI mode that correlates with my Windows type, will I then be able to boot into it? I have a constraint, my laptop doesn't have a CD ROM, so I cannot reinstall WIndows, nor can I move around the Windows recovery partition. • Batch edit (not rename) file properties in windows

  I have a large directory of downloaded shareware. I keep track of what i have by individually editing the properties of each program. However, some of the programs are multipart .rar types. And i have at least a few hundred programs so far. I am looking for a utility that will let me batch edit file properties such as Title, Author, Summary, and Comments, so I don't have to edit each file or file part individually. Windows doesn't let me do this in Explorer. Powerdesk has a proprietary system, but it isn't preserved when moving or copying files. Any Suggestions?

• I Can't run the Netbeans but I installed successfully

  I'm new to Ubuntu as well as Netbeans. I installed Netbeans, and I've made sure to install all the JDKs and JREs I could find. It installed without errors. I also saw this question and made sure I followed all the instructions there as well. I never got any error messages of any kind. So far as I know, it installed okay. However, when I try to run Netbeans, I get the message in the bottom of the Netbeans IDE like this: ant -f /root/NetBeansProjects/samp1 -Djsp.includes=/root/NetBeansProjects/samp1/build/web/one.jsp -DforceRedeploy=false -Dclient.urlPart=/one.jsp -Ddirectory.deployment.supported=true -Djavac.jsp.includes=org/apache/jsp/one_jsp.java -Dnb.wait.for.caches=true run /root/NetBeansProjects/samp1/nbproject/build-impl.xml:774: The libs.CopyLibs.classpath property is not set up. This property must point to org-netbeans-modules-java-j2seproject-copylibstask.jar file which is part of NetBeans IDE installation and is usually located at <netbeans_installation>/java<version>/ant/extra folder. Either open the project in the IDE and make sure CopyLibs library exists or setup the property manually.
