• Realtime file-level mirroring from local NTFS to network drive

  We have some data collection machines running WinXP. After a new file is written, we would like to immediately copy the new file to network storage (a NetApp CIFS share) automagically. We need realtime or near realtime copies generated (copy upon filehandle close would be fine -- these are not long-running system logs). Two commercial applications I've found so far are MirrorFile and IBM's Tivoli CDP. Are there any reliable open source programs or simple ways to get Shadow Copy to do something similar? Bonus points if it runs as a service.

• SBS 2008 File access restrictions after 5:30PM

  Hi there, SBS 2008, I have an issue whereby a user can't access a file after 5:30PM. They get the message: "cannot be accessed. The file may be corrupted, located on a server that is not responding, or read only I've checked the logon hours on the AD User account in question and there's no restrictions there. I have noticed that the account in question does not appear in the SBS Console, only in ADUC which means the account wasn't added using the wizard. It's a long shot but would that make a difference? Other than that I'm pretty stumped, any suggestions welcomed. Thanks

• How can I convert an ordinary text file to a .csv file, and import it to Excel?

  I have a group of names and addresses that I would like to import into Outlook. At the moment I have imported them into Excel, but all names and addresses are in one long entry. All are already separated by a comma. How can I get Excel to select each "value" and move it to a separate cell? Edit: I had already tried taking a text file and saving it as a .csv file. However, all contacts load into a single cell. I am using Excel 2003. Thanks.

• Cygwin file and directory user and group

  I use Cygwin as my main development environment on both my home and work computers. In order to share files between the two computers, I use Dropbox, which is installed in the following folder on both computers: c:\cygwin\home\dvanaria\dropbox Everything works great, except for one thing. When I'm working on my home computer and do an ls -l on any directory, all the files show up as owned by dvanaria of group Users. But when I work from my work computer, an ls -l shows all files as being owned by Administrators and of group Domain Users. I know Cygwin uses some kind of mapping between Windows users and permissions to the /etc/passwd file. But to be honest I have no idea how this file works or how it maps to Windows under Cygwin. Could anyone help figure this out? The main problem is that I can't edit any files when using my work computer, only read them.

  A user has lost the ability to attach files in mail. Drag and still drop works, but not toolbar Attach or Actions / Attach file. I have replaced Design template for mail . Backup and reinstalled Lotus. Using only the users notes.ini user.id & names.nsf. but still the function still does not work. Is there a registry key that may control this function or can it be a corrupt *.ini or *.id file?

• gunzip unexpected end of file

  I like to write high volume data directly to a zip file via perl. Works like a champ! However, on some rare occasions I've found that gunzip can't uncompress them declaring an unexpected end-of-file. The thing is I can uncompress it with a simple perl script, which probably misses the corrupted record(s) at the end. My question is, does anyone know of a way to use a standard utility to do the same thing? Maybe with a 'compress-as-much-as-you-can' switch? -mark

• Servlet file not running in IE9

  We are having an issue with a third party application running in IE9 which I don't believe is application specific but browser/security related. Essentially when someone is trying to add a note to a task in the application the application wants to run an "addtasks.do" file which IE9 promptly pops up a "What program do you want use to run this?" dialog. (I believe a .do file is a Java servlet) In Chrome carrying out the same action results in the note being added successfully. Does anyone have any idea why IE9 won't run it and how we can address the issue?

  Win7 How can I select multiple files in explorer and get a string of text listing the file names like i would get if i selected the files from within "open file" window of an application. for example if i have a Dir that contains 100 jpegs and i select 01.jpg, 05.jpg, 10.jpg in windows explore via ctrl+clicks or shift+click how can i get a text string that reads " "01.jpg" "05.jpg" "10.jpg" with or without the selected files full path " with out dragging the selected files to another window? I've tried copy and pasting into Note Pad and Word Pad and it either past the picts into the the application or a empty clipboard.

  Hi, Lets say I am user: bob & group: users. There is this file: -rw----r-- 1 root users 4 May 8 22:34 testfile First question, why can't bob read the file as it's readable by others? Is it simply that if you are denied by group, then you are auto-blacklisted for others? I always assumed that the final 3 bits too precedence over user/group permission bits, guess I was wrong... Second question, how is this implemented? I suppose it's linked to the first query, but how does this work in relation to Access Control, is it related to how ACLs work / are queried? Just trying to understand how these 9 permission bits are actually implemented/used in Linux. Thanks alot.

I've enabled the WebClient service on the server. So far I've determined that I can do it like this: net use x: http://host/path copy c:\path\myfile.txt x: net use x: /delete 1) Is there a simpler way than creating a temporary mapped drive? Will it work via a batch file when no user is logged in? 2) Is there anything I should know about enabling the WebClient service on my server? Previously it was disabled, which I assume is default.

  Hello, Is it possible to run CF commands inside an HTML file by updating Apache configs/htaccess file? When I searched online, I didn't come across any answers for CF, saw several posting for PHP (perhaps I am not searching for the right terms ... ?). Specifically, we have CF 6 (I know, don't say it) on Solaris, and Apache 2, and was thinking of using this line: AddType application/x-httpd-coldfusion .html so we can use cfinclude inside the HTML files, but this did not work.   I cannot find the Xorg configuration file on my newly installed Debian on my tablet-pc, so I followed this tutorial http://wiki.debian.org/Xorg and ran the command "Xorg -configure", to which I got the following error messages: (EE) Failed to load module "vmwgfx" (module does not exist, 0) (EE) vmware: Please ignore the above warnings about not being able to load module/driver vmwgfx (++) Using config file: "/root/xorg.conf.new" (==) Using system config directory "/usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d" FATAL: Module fbcon not found. Number of created screens does not match number of detected devices. Configuration failed. Dose anyone know what this means and how I should proceed? • Windows 7 file explorer preview window and password protected word documents

  When using the Windows 7 Explorer with the preview pane open you get a little preview of a file when you click on it. This includes Word, Excel spreadsheets, etc. My problem is if the Word document is password protected. Clicking on it in Explorer automatically asks for the password to display its preview. It does this if you single or double clicking on it. You then get an empty Word instance running (which allows it to display the preview) and another instance of Word with your actual file and you're asked for the password twice in total. This is annoying and untidy. Is there a way of stopping the preview pane from wanting to display password protected documents and thus not asking for the password to display a preview?

• Apache has no rights to unzip file uploaded by DirectAdmin created FTP user

  I know similar things have been asked a thousandfold, but I can't seem to figure it out.. I have recently started renting a VPS. It runs DirectAdmin. I created a reseller account in the admin account, and created a new user (with FTP account) with the reseller account. I logged in with FTP as the created user and uploaded a zip file and a php file which will extract the zip. But when running the script in the browser I get "Permission denied" errors however. Probably because Apache is not in the same group as the users FTP account. Now my question is: How can I solve this once and for all, so that I don't have to do it again for every new user account I create through DirectAdmin?

  In my latest ubuntu box, When I type for example emacs ~/.bashrc, Emacs will start but not open .bashrc. This is true for any file I pass in. I've used Emacs for several years, and have never experienced this problem before. I added (global-font-lock-mode 1);; to my .emacs file, and Emacs does recognize it, for example. "(C++/; Abbrev)", but it won't do syntax highlighting. If you can solve any of these problems, it will be very appreciated. • Finding the length of files and file path of directory structure in a Linux file system.

  I have a problem on a Linux OS running a version of SMB where if the absolute path to a directory within a Shared Folder is greater than 1024 bytes and the filename component is greater than 256 bytes the SMB service crashes and locks out all other services for network access like, SSH and FTP rendering the machine mute. To keep the system for crashing I’ve temporarily moved a group of folders where I think the problem path may be located outside of Shared Folder. I need to find the file and file path that exceeded this limitation and rename them or remove them allowing me to return a bulk of the files to the Shared Folder. I’ve tried the find and grep commands without success. Is there a chain of commands or script that I can use to hunt down the offending files and directory? Please advise.

  Hi everyone Im looking for an app pr line of code that could let me observe a process, save the info in a number of variable and then put the gathered info on a file. Ive been trying with variations of top but no luck. I am running several CentOS virtual servers, VM is 2gb ram 2 processor. Maybe a script that works over a specified amount of time while writing lines with the info on a text file so at the end i can have a sort of table with the data.
