    The standard SQL aggregate function max() will return the highest value in a group; min() will return the lowest. Is there an aggregate function in Oracle to return a random value from a group? Or some technique to achieve this? E.g., given the table foo: group_id value 1 1 1 5 1 9 2 2 2 4 2 8 The SQL query select group_id, max(value), min(value), some_aggregate_random_func(value) from foo group by group_id; might produce: group_id max(value), min(value), some_aggregate_random_func(value) 1 9 1 1 2 8 2 4 with, obviously, the last column being any random value in that group.

    Let's say we have this code (forget about prototypes for a moment): function A(){ var foo = 1; this.method = function(){ return foo; } } var a = new A(); is the inner function recompiled each time the function A is run? Or is it better (and why) to do it like this: function method = function(){ return this.foo; } function A(){ this.foo = 1; this.method = method; } var a = new A(); Or are the javascript engines smart enough not to create a new 'method' function every time? Specifically Google's v8 and node.js. Also, any general recommendations on when to use which technique are welcome. In my specific example, it really suits me to use the first example, but I know thath the outer function will be instantiated many times.

    I was trying to split a string on non-alphanumeric characters or simple put I want to split words. The approach that immediately came to my mind is to use regular expressions. Example: $string = 'php_php-php php'; $splitArr = preg_split('/[^a-z0-9]/i', $string); But there are two problems that I see with this approach. It is not a native php function, and is totally dependent on the PCRE Library running on server. An equally important problem is that what if I have punctuation in a word Example: $string = 'U.S.A-men's-vote'; $splitArr = preg_split('/[^a-z0-9]/i', $string); Now this will spilt the string as [{U}{S}{A}{men}{s}{vote}] But I want it as [{U.S.A}{men's}{vote}] So my question is that: How can we split them according to words? Is there a possibility to do it with php native function or in some other way where we are not dependent? Regards

    Suppose I have the following C++ class: class Foo { double bar(double sth); }; double Foo::bar(double sth) { double a,b,c,d,e,f a = b = c = d = e = f = 0; /* do stuff with a..f and sth */ } The function bar() will be called millions of times in a loop. Obviously, each time it's called, the variables a..f have to be allocated. Will I gain any performance by making the variables a..f members of the Foo class and just initializing them at the function's point of entry? On the other hand, the values of a..f will be dereferenced through this-, so I'm wondering if it isn't actually a possible performance degradation. Is there any overhead to accessing a value through a pointer? Thanks!

    I have the following setup: A sortable list where one of the <li> has a table with lists in each cell. All of the lists are sortable with each other. Draggable items that can be added to any of the sortables Issue: When adding a draggable item ('drag 1', 'drag 2', 'drag 3') to one of the lists in the horizontal lists (table of lists) it duplicates the draggable when dropped. Sometimes it will create both copies in the same list or one in the item list and one in the column list.     Hi, I cannot for the life of me figure this out, maybe someone can help. Using MODX a form takes user criteria to create a filter and return a list of documents. The form is one text field and a few checkboxes. If both text field and checkbox data is posted, the function works fine; if just the checkbox data is posted the function works fine; but if just the text field data is posted, modx gives me the following error: Error: implode() [function.implode]: Invalid arguments passed. I've tested this outside of modx with flat files and it all works fine leading me to assume a bug exists within modx. But I'm not convinced.     I am trying to code a function for a camera that orbits a point. Assume a 3d coordinate plane where Z is up. Ignore Z. Let's say the camera's position starts at (0, 0, z). The object to orbit is at, say (50, 50, z). So we have a distance of ~70 units. Calling the function with {(50, 50, z), 70, x} where x is the position in orbit, in radians, should return where the position of the camera should be.     I have a piece of C code that is used from a C++ function. At the top of my C++ file I have the line: #include "prediction.h" In prediction.h I have this: #ifndef prediction #define prediction #include "structs.h" typedef struct { double estimation; double variance; } response; response runPrediction(int obs, location* positions, double* observations, int targets, location* targetPositions); #endif I also have prediction.c, which has: #include "prediction.h" response runPrediction(int obs, location* positions, double* observations, int targets, location* targetPositions) { // code here } Now, in my C++ file (which as I said includes prediction.h) I call that function, then compile (through Xcode) I get this error: "runPrediction(int, location*, double*, int, location*)", referenced from: mainFrame::respondTo(char*, int)in mainFrame.o ld: symbol(s) not found collect2: ld returned 1 exit status prediction.c is marked for compilation for the current target. I don't have any problems with other .cpp files not being compiled. Any thoughts here?

    I have a carousel with textboxes for each image, and my client (who knows nothing about HTML) edits the textboxes using a WYSIWYG text editor. The resulting output is akin to your worst nightmares; something like: <div class="carousel-text-container"> <span style="font-size:18pt;"> <span style="font-weight:bold;"> Lorem <span style="font-size:15pt:">Dolor</span> </span> Ipsum <span style="font-size:19pt;"><span>&nbsp;<span>Sit</span>Amet</span> </span> </div> This site has to be displayed at 3 different sizes to accomodate smaller monitors, so I have been using CSS media queries to resize the site. Now I am having trouble resizing the text inside the textbox correctly. I have tried using jQuery.css to get the font size of each element in px, and then convert it to em. Then, by setting a font-size:x% sort of declaration on .carousel-text-container, I hoped that that would resize everything properly. Unfortunately, there seems to be a recursive nature with how font-size is applied in ems. That is, .example is not resized properly in the following because its parent is also influencing it <span style="font-size:2em;"> Something <span class="example" style="font-size:1.5em;">Else</span> </span> How can I resize everything reliably and precisely such I can achieve a true percentage of my original font size, margin, padding, line-height, etc. for all the children of .carousel-text-container?

  • How to stop IE8 from expanding a nested div's width to fit parent div?

    I have a page with several levels of divs. In one of the inner divs, there are two divs (1 & 2) which have float; left so that they are on the same horizontal level. It looks good in FireFox, but in the IE8, div 2 is below div 1. I turned the borders on and noticed div2 (violet border) is filling the width of the parent box. In FF, the width is the width of all the content only. If I use a hard coded width (not a good idea), IE8 displays it fine. How can I make IE8 not expand the width of div2 to the right edge of its parent div? IE8 (not good: div2 width is expanded) Firefox (good: width of div2 is not expanded)
