  • iPhone SDK 3.2 Universal App issue with .xib files

    Hello! So I am finding this process of universalizing my iPhone app to be a big headache! Am I alone in this? I sure hope not. Anyway, my question is regarding the .xib files for my universal application. I had my iPhone OS 3.1 running app all ready to make the universal switch. I went up to Project/Upgrade Current Target for iPad/Universal Application and it supposedly made my app have all the necessary iPad settings... So when I went to test it in 3.2 SDk, the screen was big, meaning the toolbar was sized correctly for the iPad, but the image that was being displayed was for the OS 3.1, meaning it was way small. So I then went to the iPad Source folder, changed the name of my MainViewController.xib file to MainViewController-iPad.xib, and inserted the bigger image I had prepared for the iPad, and it still didn't work correctly. Then, I went into my MainViewController.m file and changed the nib reference from MainViewController to MainViewController-iPad, and it worked! My only concern is that being that I had to "hard-code" it in, or force it to read from my -iPad file, is that going to present issues for the OS3.1 version? I can't go back and test the 3.1 version now for some reason, the option was removed from the Active SDK menu... If there is anyone out there that has experienced this, or has insight into what I am doing wrong, your help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

And the most important question is the release of all the objects. As might have guessed, I use this in a UITableViewController.   • Is background tasks the solution for this problem?

    Hi. I need to develop an enterprise app that monitors the network traffic. Basically it detects if the user is in wi-fi or cellular data and save the amount of bytes was sent and received in a period of time. I saw an App at the AppStore that do exactly this job. Detecting wi-fi or cellular data is quite simple using the Reachability Sample provided by Apple. My problem is to keep monitoring the bytes sent and received while the app is in background. As it is an enterprise App, I used UIBackgroundModes "voip" to avoid the app to be terminated. I also installed the setKeepAliveTimeout method and I'm able to see the logs each 10 minutes, BUT only for 10 seconds after the method runs. I mean, setKeepAliveTimeout brings my App to run a Timer for 10 seconds each 1o minutes. I'm thinking wether or not a task in background is the best solution for my problem. I'll appreciate any comments. EDIT: Ok guys. Thats the perfect way to do it. All we need to do is to create a second thread detached from the main one. This way we have a continuos threading running forever. You must see the GCD docs at Apple's website also. Second thing you should consider for an enterprise App is to set it up as a voip App, this way iOS will put your App running even after a reboot. It's a special behavior iOS has to keep voip Apps running. Thats it guys. I hope it can help you.

    What I am trying to achieve: encapsulate a Login (or any) Form to be reused across site post to self when Login/validation fails, show original page with Validation Summary (some might argue to just post to Login Page and show Validation Summary there; if what I'm trying to achieve isn't possible, I will just go that route) when Login succeeds, redirect to /App/Home/Index also, want to: stick to PRG principles avoid ajax keep Login Form (UserController.Login()) as encapsulated as possible; avoid having to implement HomeController.Login() since the Login Form might appear elsewhere All but the redirect works. My approach thus far has been: Home/Index includes Login Form: <%Html.RenderAction("Login","User");%> User/Login ViewUserControl<UserLoginViewModel> includes: <%=Html.ValidationSummary("") % using(Html.BeginForm()){} includes hidden form field "userlogin"="1" public class UserController : BaseController { ...     The following code fetch all data (by clicking a.info link) from a php file "info.php" and prints in the #content div. The problem is that it prints everything from info.php file. Can I possibly select only some part of data from info.php file to load in #content?   • Why is TransactionScope operation is not valid?

    I have a routine which uses a recursive loop to insert items into a SQL Server 2005 database The first call which initiates the loop is enclosed within a transaction using TransactionScope. When I first call ProcessItem the myItem data gets inserted into the database as expected. However when ProcessItem is called from either ProcessItemLinks or ProcessItemComments I get the following error. “The operation is not valid for the state of the transaction” I am running this in debug with VS 2008 on Windows 7 and have the MSDTC running to enable distributed transactions. The code below isn’t my production code but is set out exactly the same. The AddItemToDatabase is a method on a class I cannot modify and uses a standard ExecuteNonQuery() which creates a connection then closes and disposes once completed. I have looked at other posting on here and the internet and still cannot resolve this issue.   • Google App Engine application instance recycling and response times...

    Hi, I posted this on GAE for Java group, but I hope to get some answers here quicker :) I decided to do some long-run performance tests on my application. I created some small client hitting app every 5-30 minutes and I run 3-5 of threads with such client. I noticed huge differenced in response times and started to investigate issue. I found reason very quick. I am experiencing same issues as described in following topics: Uneven response time between connection to server to first byte sent Application instances seem to be too aggressively recycled Getting 'Request was aborted after waiting too long to attempt to service your request.' after application idle I am using Springframework, it tkes around 18-20s to start app instance, which is causing response times to take from 1s (when requests hits running app - very rare) to 22s when fresh application is created. Is there any solution for this? I was thinking about creating most basic servlet performing critical tasks (serving API call) and leave UI as is. But then I would loose all benefits of Springframework. Is there any solution for this? After solving (hacking) numerous constrains of App Engine which I hit while developing my app that is the one I think will make me move out of App Engine... that's simply to much to all the time think how to win with GAE problems than how to solve my application problems...     Hello, this is my first post on stackoverflow...i hope someone can help me i have a big performance regression with Java 6 LinkedBlockingQueue. In the first thread i generate some objects which i push in to the queue In the second thread i pull these objects out. The performance regression occurs when the take() method of the LinkedBlockingQueue is called frequently. I monitored the whole program and the take() method claimed the most time overall. And the throughput goes from ~58Mb/s to 0.9Mb/s... the queue pop and take methods ar called with a static method from this class public class C_myMessageQueue { private static final LinkedBlockingQueue<C_myMessageObject> x_queue = new LinkedBlockingQueue<C_myMessageObject>( 50000 ); /** * @param message * @throws InterruptedException * @throws NullPointerException */ public static void addMyMessage( C_myMessageObject message ) throws InterruptedException, NullPointerException { x_queue.put( message ); } /** * @return Die erste message der MesseageQueue * @throws InterruptedException */ public static C_myMessageObject getMyMessage() throws InterruptedException { return x_queue.take(); } } how can i tune the take() method to accomplish at least 25Mb/s, or is there a other class i can use which will block when the "queue" is full or empty. kind regards Bart P.S.: sorry for my bad english, i'm from germany ;)

    hello, I am out of any logic how to write the right sql statment. I've got a sqlite table holding every played track in a row with played date/time Now I will count the plays of all artists, grouped by day and then find the artist with the max playcount per day. I used this Query SELECT COUNT(ARTISTID) AS artistcount, ARTIST AS artistname,strftime('%Y-%m-%d', playtime) AS day_played FROM playcount GROUP BY artistname to get this result "93"|"The Skygreen Leopards"|"2010-06-16" "2" |"Arcade Fire" |"2010-06-15" "2" |"Dead Kennedys" |"2010-06-15" "2" |"Wolf People" |"2010-06-15" "3" |"16 Horsepower" |"2010-06-15" "3" |"Alela Diane" |"2010-06-15" "46"|"Motorama" |"2010-06-15" "1" |"Ariel Pink's Haunted" |"2010-06-14" I tried then to query this virtual table but I always get false results in artistname.   • Implementing the outside application „openedFileView“ in c# Project

    I work on a application where i want to find out which files on my filesystem is used by a Process. After trying around with the System.Diagnostics.Process class, and didn´t get the resulst i wanted i find the application called OpenedFileView from Nirsoft. http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/opened_files_view.html Basically it does exactly what i want but i have some problems with the implimication in my project. The option wich “OpenedFileView” gives you is to start it with some arguments that it creates you an txt file with all the information i want. But for my case i want to whach the processes in realtime, and if i start the application repetitively i always have the hourglass at my mouse cursor. So after this i tryed some ways to get rid of it, tryed out to put it in a BackgroundWorker Thread. But this changed nothing at all. I also looked for a way to force the Process not to exit, and sending new arguments to it, but this also didn´t worked. So is there any way to use this application in the way I want, or does this didn´t work at all? I hope somebody can help me either with getting away this annoying mouse cursor hourglass, or with a better implimication of this application so i can use it in realtime!     Hi, I've recently tried to optimize my site for speed and brandwith. Amongst many other techniques, I've used GZIP on my .css and .js files. Using PuTTY I compressed the files on my site and then used: <IfModule mod_rewrite.c> RewriteEngine On RewriteCond %{HTTP:Accept-encoding} gzip RewriteCond %{HTTP_USER_AGENT} !Konqueror RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME}.gz -f RewriteRule ^(.*)\.css$ $1.css.gz [QSA,L] RewriteRule ^(.*)\.js$ $1.js.gz [QSA,L] <FilesMatch \.css\.gz$> ForceType text/css </FilesMatch> <FilesMatch \.js\.gz$> ForceType text/javascript </FilesMatch> </IfModule> <IfModule mod_mime.c> AddEncoding gzip .gz </IfModule> in my .htaccess file so that they get served properly because all my links are without the ".gz". My problem is, I cant work on the GZIP file in Dreamweaver. Is there a plugin or extension of somesort that allows Dreamweaver to temporarily uncompress thses files so it can read them? Or is there a way that I can work on my local copies as regular files, and server side they automatically get compressed when they are uploaded. Or is there a different code editor I should be using that would completely get around this? Or a just a different technique to doing this? I hope this question makes sense, Thanks

  • Update table columns bound to NSArrayController

    Hi, I'm fairly new to the world of bindings in cocoa, and I'm having some troubles (perhaps/probably due to a misunderstanding). I have a singleton that contains an NSMutableArray called plugins, containing objects of class Plugin. It has a method called loadPlugins which adds objects to the plugins array. This may be called at any point. It's been added as an instance in Interface Builder. Also in IB is an NSObjectController, whose content outlet is connected to the singleton. There is also an NSArrayController, whose contentArray is bound to the NSObjectController (controller key is 'selection', model key path is 'plugins', object class name is 'Plugin'). And finally I have a table view with 2 columns, the values of which are bound to the NSArrayController's arrangedObjects, using keys of properties in the Plugin class. So far so standard (as far as I can tell from tutorials at least). My trouble is that when the loadPlugins method is called in the singleton, and objects are added to the plugins array, the table doesn't update to show the objects (unless loadPlugins is called before the nib is loaded). -reloadData called on the tableView doesn't do anything. Is there a way to tell the NSArrayController that the referenced array has been updated? I understand there is the -add: method for NSArrayController, which could be used in the loadPlugins, but this isn't desirable as I want to keep the singleton totally separate from the display aspect. This seems related to: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1623396/refresh-cocoa-binding-nsarraycontroller-combobox The line: "editing the array behind the controller's back" seems to perhaps pinpoint the problem, but I would hope that it would be possible to have the singleton not know about the controller.     First post here, so I hope this is enough detail. I started using freebase-python today to get film information for a program that I’m working on. One thing that I need to grab is a list of actors that starred in a film. I’ve followed some tutorials and guides on the way to do this, and can get a list of films for a director or the director of a film, but when I try to do the same with an actor or a film’s cast, I get ‘null’ results. I have the same problem in both Python and the Freebase MQL Query Editor, and you can see what I've tried below. Links to all of the examples below written in the editor can be found here, as Stack Overflow wouldn't let me post links underneath each example on my first post! Working director query in Python: import freebase fb = freebase.mqlread q = {'type':'/film/film', 'name':'Inception', 'directed_by':[]} fb(q) Working director's filmography query in Python: import freebase fb = freebase.mqlread q = {'type':'/film/director', 'name': 'Christopher Nolan', 'film':[]} fb(q) Based on these tests, I tried to do the same with actors, but with odd results: Not working cast list query in Python: import freebase fb = freebase.mqlread q = {'type':'/film/film', 'name':'Inception', 'starring':[]} fb(q) Not working actor's filmography query in Python: import freebase fb = freebase.mqlread q = {'type':'/film/actor', 'name':'Leonardo DiCaprio', 'film':[]} fb(q) Strangely, I get an accurate number of actors/films back, but no names. First of all, I want to appologise if there is some topics like this, but I searched whole forums and didn't find any that finishes my problem. Now the important one. As I stated in topic title, I need an AS3 code that's doing the thing. This is what I want to accomplish. I have a MC(image) in the center of my screen, and have two buttons, one on right and one on left side of that MC. I want to scroll (image is like a menu) that MC left or right on mouse events, down or over. So, I just want to change MCs X value while holding mouse button on buttons or just hovering over them. I have managed to do that, but it's only moving by one value I have entered after a mouse event.     I am new to C++. I am getting HEAP CORRUPTION ERROR. Any help will be highly appreciated. Since CEntity has a virtual destructor, I hope the piece of code in CReader's destructor should work. In fact, it does work for small files but I get HEAP CORRUPTION ERROR while working with bigger files.   • MVC ASP.NET, ObjectContext and Ajax. Weird Behaviour

    Hi, i've been creating a web application in mvc asp.net. I have three different project/solutions. One solution contains the model in EF (DAL) and all the methods to add, update, delete and query the objects in the model, the objectcontext is managed here in a per request basis. Other solution contains a content management system in wich authorized users insert, delete, update and access objects through the DAL mentioned before. And the last solution contains the web page that is accessed by all users and where the only operations executed are selects, no update, inserts or deletes here. All the selects are executed against the DAL mentioned before (the first solution). The problem here is that i'm not sure whether an HttpContext lifespan ObjectContext is the best solution. I have a lot of ajax calls in my web app and i'm not sure if an httpcontext could interfere with the performance of the application. I've been noticed that in some cases, specially when someone is working in the content manager inserting, updating or deleting, when you try to click on any link of the user web application (the web app that is accessed by any user - the third one that i mentioned before) the web page freezes and it remains stucked transferring data. In order to stop that behaviour you have to stop and refresh or click several times on the link. Excuse me for my bad english. I hope you could understand and could help me to solve this issue.   • Why can't c# use inline anonymous lambdas or delegates?

    I hope I worded the title of my question appropriately. In c# I can use lambdas (as delegates), or the older delegate syntax to do this: Func<string> fnHello = () => "hello"; Console.WriteLine(fnHello()); Func<string> fnHello2 = delegate() { return "hello 2"; }; Console.WriteLine(fnHello2()); So why can't I "inline" the lambda or the delegate body, and avoid capturing it in a named variable (making it anonymous)? // Inline anonymous lambda not allowed Console.WriteLine( (() => "hello inline lambda")() ); // Inline anonymous delegate not allowed Console.WriteLine( (delegate() { return "hello inline delegate"; })() ); An example that works in javascript (just for comparison) is: alert( (function(){ return "hello inline anonymous function from javascript"; })() ); Which produces the expected alert box. UPDATE: It seems you can have an inline anonymous lambda in C#, if you cast appropriately, but the amount of ()'s starts to make it unruly. // Inline anonymous lambda with appropriate cast IS allowed Console.WriteLine( ((Func<string>)(() => "hello inline anonymous lambda"))() ); Perhaps the compiler can't infer the sig of the anonymous delegate to know which Console.WriteLine() you're trying to call? Does anyone know why this specific cast is required?

  • Evaluation of environment variables in command run by Java's Runtime.exec()

    Hi, I have a scenarios where I have a Java "agent" that runs on a couple of platforms (specifically Windows, Solaris & AIX). I'd like to factor out the differences in filesystem structure by using environment variables in the command line I execute. As far as I can tell there is no way to get the Runtime.exec() method to resolve/evaluate any environment variables referenced in the command String (or array of Strings). I know that if push comes to shove I can write some code to pre-process the command String(s) and resolve enviroment variables by hand (using getEnv() etc). However I'm wondering if there is a smarter way to do this since I'm sure I'm not the only person wanting to do this and I'm sure there are pitfalls in "knocking up" my own implementation. Your guidance and suggestions are most welcome. edit: I would like to refer to environment variables in the command string using some consistent notation such as $VAR and/or %VAR%. Not fussed which. edit: To be clear I'd like to be able to execute a command such as: perl $SCRIPT_ROOT/somePerlScript.pl args on Windows and Unix hosts using Runtime.exec(). I specify the command in config file that describes a list of jobs to run and it has to be able to work cross platform, hence my thought that an environment variable would be useful to factor out the filesystem differences (/home/username/scripts vs C:\foo\scripts).     I was reading about the subset-sums problem when I came up with what appears to be a general-purpose algorithm for solving it: (defun subset-contains-sum (set sum) (let ((subsets) (new-subset) (new-sum)) (dolist (element set) (dolist (subset-sum subsets) (setf new-subset (cons element (car subset-sum))) (setf new-sum (+ element (cdr subset-sum))) (if (= new-sum sum) (return-from subset-contains-sum new-subset)) (setf subsets (cons (cons new-subset new-sum) subsets))) (setf subsets (cons (cons element element) subsets))))) "set" is a list not containing duplicates and "sum" is the sum to search subsets for. "subsets" is a list of cons cells where the "car" is a subset list and the "cdr" is the sum of that subset. New subsets are created from old ones in O(1) time by just cons'ing the element to the front. I am not sure what the runtime complexity of it is, but appears that with each element "sum" grows by, the size of "subsets" doubles, plus one, so it appears to me to at least be quadratic. I am posting this because my impression before was that NP-complete problems tend to be intractable and that the best one can usually hope for is a heuristic, but this appears to be a general-purpose solution that will, assuming you have the CPU cycles, always give you the correct answer. How many other NP-complete problems can be solved like this one?

  • UIView Animation animates position but not width

    Hi there, I'm trying to transform a UISearchBar, like in Mobile Safari: touch in the search field and it grows while the location field shrinks. My current animation to alter the width and position of the search field only animates the position: just before it slides to the right place, it simply snaps out to the right width.     In the description of how to add a list of options to an AlertDialog the official Android documentation alludes to saving a users preferences with one of the "data storage techniques." The examples assume the AlertDialog has been spawned within an Activity class. In my case I've created a class that extends ItemizedOverlay. This class overrides the onTap method and uses an AlertDialog to prompt the user to make a multi-choice selection. I would like to capture and persist the selections for each OverlayItem they tap on. The below code is the onTap method I've written. It functions as written but doesn't yet do what I'd hope. I'd like to capture and persist each selection made by the user to be used later. How do I do that? Is using an AlertDialog in this manner a good idea?
